Fighting Melee Mesmers. (Balance Issue)
its really just a skill curve class. If you stick with pvp for a bit and leanr to fight em, they are fine.
No other class requires such an extensive amount of counterplay in order to stand a chance against them.
Mesmers really need to be reworked or deleted. There’s no other way around it. Extremely unfun class to face.

I would say Thief are ALOT worse thanks to the game mechanic that is Stealth and the Culling issue. I play a Mesmer alt and i dont have that much trouble fighting them, i know what to look out for and know the most important skills and know that AoE is deadly against them
Not alot you can do against a Perma-stealthing Thief that can kill you before the culling effect ends showing you where they are. Just a few hits before they show and unless you are a bunker you are either dead or near enough there

EVENTUALLY…You sure about that? How long as the Culling issue been in the game? its an engine issue from what i heard i dont think their is a fix or surely they would have done it by now.
Mesmer’s are strong yes, but they have clear weaknesses cough Conditions cough They are far from the godlike modes that were the Guardian Bunker, Eel Bunker or Thief anything builds.
I rarely have any issue with Mesmers, i have played them enough to know what to look out for, AoE is a killer against the, conditions are a killer as well
Compare that to a thief that can just attack you while being in stealth (thanks culling!) and before you know anything 2-3 hits and that could be as much as 15k+ damage you are either dead or just about to die.

Agreed, I’ll fight a thief over a mesmer any day. This is coming from a GC Engi susceptible to 8k + backstabs.

However shatter is OP atm. Its not so much the shatter that’s op but that all the utility skills that summon clones have such strong defensive properties its makes mesmers extremely hard to lock down while still allowing them full access to dps. The other thing is shatter has nearly no risk and the basic shatter builds have such strong defenses in the form of invulnerability and stuns that its makes for a mixture of skills that are simply too strong when combined.

Should all these skills be nerfed? No. However some of them should be looked at. These counter skills are simply too offensive in the nature of a shatter build. Closing the gap on a mesmer more often then not means certain death.
There needs to be some analysis of risk vs reward given the shear amount of DPS burst a shatter build has.

Finding the real one is never a problem, that is usually the scapegoat for mesmer users who claim that we need to L2P (lol).
The problem is actually killing a ‘good’ mesmer (those with epic faceroll skills).
Chaos storm, decoy, blink, the GS knockback, point and click 2 seconds stun, the one hand sword snare + blurred frenzy (+shatter in your face), the condition spam, the effing phantasms (I know they can be killed but they will at least get one attack rotation before you do) and the rest of the army of clones that spawn every second.
It’s just too much to overcome, too much counterplay to kill just one guy and too much tricks at their avail. It’s not fun to face a mesmer, it never is.
Low risk, high reward in a nutshell.
Also his illusionary rogue in their downed state can crit for 5.3k, name ONE downed skill that does even half of that damage in one go, it’s truly ridiculous.

^Mostly this. But I think the first minor trait in Illusions is a bigger deal than all of these skills sans Blurred Frenzy (too stronk).
Umm . Dude, i kill good mesmers all the time. And if your a ranger a mesmer is joke to kill or least force to run.
Ele should also win 1on1 vs mesmer nearly all the time.A mesmer who knows where the interrupt button is…won’t lose easily( if at all) against an ele, if I can interrupt an ele healing 24/7 with a 1.5s daze skill animation ( comet), I believe a mesmer can interrupt an ele with zero effort using all its daze skills which take 1/2 time animation…but again we’re talking about decent mesmers
you cannot interrupt an ele who switches attunements and dodge rolls every 9 seconds.
As a shatter mesmer you do not have all the tools to remove the easy and abundant boons they will put up every 3 seconds
And you have to build your mesmer specifically for dueling a bunker to handle a pure bunker 1 v 1.
and even then the match can go either way.
You heavily underestimate an ele’s ability to heal and manage boons.
This isnt the bugged mesmer we are talking about that could get 20might stacks in 3 seconds

I completely agree with you both. This is exactly how is feel.
Mesmers got SO much inheret damage, survivability and confusion…it ridicolus fighting even a decent one.
Thought this had died. You want Mesmer weaknesses we have given them to you. You are so afraid of shatters? How many dodge rolls do you have? 2! How many shatter skills do Mesmers use in the “faceroll” shatter spec combo? 2! Dodge into the shatters toward the Mesmer. If you are so worried about ileap and BF? It has OBVIOUS animation. Almost as obvious as an ele’s skills and can be easily avoided. Or if you don’t like that here’s a hint! The combo that leads to this “overpowered” blurred frenzy has a real big problem with the z axis. If you are directly higher or lower than the clone it will just stand there for 3 seconds before moving. Often times a Mesmer will swap so fast that they realize they are BEHIND where the summoned the clone right in the middle of a blurred frenzy. And if you don’t believe me go to the Mesmer list of bugged traits and abilities thread (longest list of its type in these forums). Best way to deal with a Mesmer by far is conditions, conditions, conditions, conditions. Your typical “low skill cap faceroll” shatter spec will run with 0 condi removal. This is a big help for you all because any class has access to conditions. Ones that would be great off the top of my head Trap Rangers, grenade engis, any type of ele, necros! Please let this die. Devs have already said that they won’t bring any huge changes to classes but tweaks and balance issues within classes. So for Mesmer shatters might get a nerf to bring them down with other builds but then our phantasm bunker army with full regen/retal 1/2 time armor will get a nerf as well because guardians will start whining that we are giving them competition. So think of what you are asking and keep in mind the law of unintended consequences.
To be honest, the only thing I hate about fighting a mesmer is that you have to dodge forward in order to evade the shatter. As a warrior, it often breaks my momentum, and it’s hard to get back into fight after something like that, because I can’t use environment how I want. I think it’s a bug, but I guess it won;t get fixed soon, as there are much bigger problems we are having here.
Thieves are much more annoying, and mostly because of culling issue. Most of the time, if I don’t have my shield stance up, and I already had to block/dodge steal/backstab, he is going to get 75% of my health down in a second, and I’m not playing glass cannon. Yes, you can be effective as a warrior even when not playing glass cannon, if not more.

Reason it doesn’t work is evading backwards won’t trigger the shatter. The clones shatter when they are within a certain distance evading opens and doesn’t close that distance. Working as intended

Well it should trigger the shatter, no matter the way you are dodging. It’s pretty much the only skill that makes dodging forward, rather than into tactically favorable position, a must, so I doubt it’s working as intended.
Except mesmers only want to be in melee range under 2 circumstances… Trust me in this case dodging into the Mesmer is tactically favorable because our sword one attack is meh at best and if you are a warrior you have an auto attack that can take us to low health super quick. The GS auto attack we use is stronger at a distance and lame up close. Staff auto attack applies conditions but nothing for you to fret over because base damage is weak. So if you are a warrior and dodge away from our shatter you are hurting yourself and helping us. If you dodge into it and pressure us you will win.

Yes, I know about that, because my first character was a mesmer, and I played it for quite some time. However, sometimes I want to dodge behind pillars on hendge, to avoid unnecessary damage, especially when I’m low on health, but it’s impossible, so the only way to go for is directly to mesmer, which can sometimes be pretty undesirable position, especially when I’m on cds, and low on health. Also, as I already said, I’m not really playing glass cannon, although I am using gs, so most of my damage comes from WW and 100b, and my other weapon set is mace+shield, so both of my auto attacks are quite weak compared to axe for example, or melee attacks on some other classes.

Ahhh… here in is where I think warriors heals base should be buffed. 1/5 health usually right? Make it something better or I would like to see “Mending cure’s a condition and the more adrenaline you have the greater amount you heal”. This is the same ideas as mesmers ether feast more active illusions the more we heal.
Yeah, our heals scale pretty poorly with our health base. To be honest, our best heal seem to be Healing Surge, as it can heal for around 8k with full adrenaline bar, though it’s on longer cooldown . Condition removal of Mending is pretty much nothing with conditions being easily reapliable, and 5k heal, which is basically 1/5 of my health isn’t improving situation either.
Mesmer mechanics just don’t fit well in this game.
Fought 2 summon necros running with a mesmer the other day (sticking close together—they knew what they were doing). It was a headache just to get a hero targetted.
Do we have a “tab doesn’t target minions” or “disable targeting minions” options? No. We fight the UI.
Two+ mesmers is similar. If you get enough other units close together, just targetting them is a pain. Again, you fight the UI. Everyone is moving, and they gain seconds every time they drop target because of UI functions.
So pet necros/Guardians with spirit weapons/Engi’s with turrets/Rangers with pets/Ele’s with pets/mesmers/thieves with thieves guild all don’t fit well with this game? I just pointed out over half the classes that have some form of a summoning ability.

it is getting sad because people just enjoy singling out mesmers and I pointed out that at least half classes have these abilities. TAB yeah its great… But clicking using mouse helps too. You people continually look for things that mesmers have wrong with them and I pointed out other classes that have similar abilities and you brush it off because you just have this kitten bias against the class.

Why do you even come to the PvP forums? You’ve stated repeatedly you don’t PvP hardly ever, you’ve shown in other posts that you lack even a basic knowledge of how PvP works and you don’t do tournaments. We’re not all out to get just mesmers. We want classes that are blatantly over powered tweaked so they’re not anymore. Oh, and FYI, pet necros, guardians with spirit weapons and engis with turrets don’t currently fit well in PvP, which I suppose you would know, if you did it more often.
How can you compare any summons to the mesmers…really.
Every fart by that class summons another clone. A clone, as in a look alike of the target.
Yeah it’s easy knowing who is who by the movement, weapons,hp,damage and such but it still takes a second or so to differ between em’.
The only as annoying thing might be the thief guild, Since they are pretty similar and can do some nice numbers.
The thing gets even worse when you realise that
Fighting the clones is useless since it’s easy peasy getting more, and fighting the mesmer while a group of clones is up seems like a downhill battle with their added damage and the inability to damage the mesmer through his slew of stuns, invis, invun.

I post here because any “fix” to please the PvP whiners has NEVER been split for mesmers. So it affects my game play elsewhere. Dungeons/WvW and such. So I come here with options for the whiners yet they refuse to listen to me or the 50 other Mesmer players that post with advice.
About that " Never been split " – That’s untrue. A couple of skills have been split.
The one that comes to mind is grenade damage that before getting sigils added, got a debuff at PvP only.
And for god sake, Stop calling us whiners. We complain, not whine.
It’s legit just the same.
When you run a strong and solid class as mesmer it’s easy feeling like it’s all sun shine and rainbows…

NEVER BEEN SPLIT FOR MESMERS or did you just space that for mesmers part? Its true. Look at patches that involve Mesmer changes. No change has been split for pvp and the rest of this game for mesmers! But if they do something to our clone on dodge skill then engi’s no longer get bombs on dodge, and thieves no longer get caltrops on dodge. Its ridiculous. Just because one class has some novelty too it and requires a different fighting style it needs nerfed into the ground to please you kitten. And if they say that they are going to change something on mesmers in pvp only! Great I don’t give a flying kitten at that point. But anything other wise I will object to.

Because the caltrops only give a very small window for cripple/bleed and the bomb only does horribly low damage, all the mean while, the mesmer clone gives them either:
1) Shatter Fodder
2) Meat Shield for Projectiles
3) INTANGIBLE STATE SHATTER OPTION
Who else can create something on a dodge roll that makes them untouchable for 3 seconds? Right, only Mesmers.
Lets not forget to mention that he could actually pop a vigor boon and dodge multiple times for more clones to do all of the above.
Meanwhile, the Warrior deals 200 damage at the end of his dodge roll! Ouch.
Edit: Why not give thief’s their novelty on their dodge rolls? Stealth for 3 seconds on dodge roll. Doesn’t seem op at all.
Just because our mechanic works well doesn’t mean that we should be punished for it. Do something for the other classes stop trying to ruin mine. And once again if they do any splits for mesmers between pvp and pve I wouldn’t care because as important as you guys think you are you are the SMALLEST portion of this game.
Shatter mesmers do too much spammable burst damage, generate clones too quickly and have too many escapes. The build is too strong and a small mindwrack nerf should bring it in line with the rest of the game, maybe 15% or so

The mechanic works way too well, that’s the problem.
If we go ahead and bump every other mechanic to that state, pvp will become even more burst prone.
To be honest mesmers also shine in pve , The only reason people don’t complain about that is that it’s the mobs that are getting the short stick – not players.
Beside i’d rather see this fixed and then go from there.
And really, stop with the personal assaults , it’s not called for. We might be a ‘small’ crowd, but we’re an hardcore one.
it is getting sad because people just enjoy singling out mesmers and I pointed out that at least half classes have these abilities.
The reason for brushing it off, and why it is needed too, is because the things you stated have no where near the affect and efficiency that mesmer clones do.
The most notable are the Necromancer minions. Horrible ai… I actually feel bad for them when I see necros running around with the 4+minions because they are severely hampering themselves with extra bodies that won’t even follow/attack their target the majority of the time.
The Guardian “spirit weapons” suffer from the same bad ai that the necro minions do, but they also have another draw back. They are not prolonged summons like the mesmer clones or the necro minions. The weapons will die after being commanded if not traited. The weapons will de-summon after 20 seconds anyway with a 30/45/60 second cool-down if not traited.
Just looking at these two professions and their summons versus the clones/phantasm of a mesmer…. it is painfully obvious to most who comes out on top.
You can complain that the clones/phantasm are the mesmer’s “signature” as a class, but that signature has so many positives to it with no negatives to go with it. While all the other classes have little positives with serious negatives with the “minions/summons”.
Just because our mechanic works well doesn’t mean that we should be punished for it. Do something for the other classes stop trying to ruin mine. And once again if they do any splits for mesmers between pvp and pve I wouldn’t care because as important as you guys think you are you are the SMALLEST portion of this game.
We might be a ‘small’ crowd, but we’re an hardcore one.
its not an insult it is a fact. Smallest population of game is PvP. People are either in PvE doing dungeons or in WvW. finding the real Mesmer is not a problem for the majority of the population hence why they don’t post here. And it seems like you all just want it to be TAB dang found Mesmer instead of using your mouse to click them. Titles/sigil procs/signets and so on are dead Mesmer give aways. Our HP may not be as low as guardians ele’s or thieves but they have buffs that help them stealth and a lot of boons our only sustainable defense is our illusions and you want that to be removed as well. AOE conditions are amazing at 1. Destroying clones SUPER fast. 2. Finding the real Mesmer if you STILL have not figured out how to do so. And even then the GC Mesmer that you all love to gripe about completely suck at handling conditions.

You think clone AI is any better? The clone on dodge doesn’t attack the target the Mesmer has but just the nearest one to it. Clones attack rate is Painfully slow which should be a dead give away. And phantasms (if we are using them as a source of damage) have an insanely slow attack rate. And yeah those classes summon abilities may not be as good as a Mesmer. But they have other things that they simply way out do a Mesmer on. End of story.
Edit: Also phantasm’s have LOWER health than clones when the profession page says they have HIGHER health then clones. Yet another blatant flaw in things that mesmers have wrong with their clones/phantasms.

Sadly, Warriors will need more than just a minor buff to a single heal to be a actual force to reckon with. Our base armor and high health is nothing but a single second stop gap from death while our defensive utilities and options are lacking/non-present.
(Yes we have “Endure Pain” but that is a 3 second stack more conditions on me skill.)

What’s the CD on endure pain? And it should block conditions as well (hopefully its a bug and not a design intent)
The Clone/Phantasm ai is much better. Not only are the ai’s better, but you can easily replace lost clones/phantasm. You can also use them for a variety of other skills (aka your shatters). Painfully slow attack? The Guardian “Spirit Bow” attacks every 4.5 seconds.. The duelist on the pistol is about the same…. Which one does more damage? Now, by how much more damage does it do? How many times can it attack before you have to take another action? What is the cool-down on said skills?
(The duelist does a lot more damage for each “attack”. The Guardian spirit bow can attack roughly 5 times in the summon duration while not traited and if not commanded. The cool-down on the bow is 60 seconds)
Answer those questions and you will see why the mesmer class is truly dominating at this time.

90 seconds.
While I believe you have a blurred frenzy state that copies Endure Pain on your sword 2 on a 10 second cool down ?

endure pain is not a block, its just a you dont get dmg while conds are still ticking… but to add: conds are ticking in lnvul too, you just cant stack them up xD

Wow if that’s the case up the amount of time to 5 secs and make it remove/block conditions (or would that be “OP”). Other wise it is a waste of a utility slot.

However look at the huge difference in health/armor of a warrior compared to a mes that uses BF a lot. I have to invest FULLY into toughness and vitality and sacrifice any power/prec to come close to what a good DPS warrior gets. And it is a shatter specs 1 of 2 damage mitigation abilities. “Distortion” is available to all mesmers and on a much longer cooldown.

The “Distortion” shatter is a 60 second cool-down without trating into the reduced cool-down line. It is 30 seconds shorter than endure pain and has better function. Also, as I mentioned, most shatter speced mesmer’s run with sword/pistol (that I have seen). The sword 2 ability gives Distortion as well on a 10 second cool-down untraited.
To the Mesmers:
WOOT ALMOST 200 POSTS LOLOLOL
Hey anyone remember back like a few months after release when mesmer had tons of QQers and then it pretty much died down when peopled learned to counter?
Welcome to generation 2 everyone who got/started playing GW2 for Christmas WOOOT! Great Job Arena-net on hitting the 3 mil mark, Looks like we get to see the people who were not here for launch or at least casuals who did not jump into PvP early and just hit 80 on their 3rd alt rofl.
Wanna know when mes was really OP if you were not around? Was in Beta! our clones did damage (took out a whole team with greatsword #2 and mirror images) and 3 mesmers could crash a server TRINITY PORTAL ACTIVATE! xD (was a secret skill and they took it away Sad face)
@jportell I love you bro, I get what your trying to do but it’s always going to fall on deaf ears. They are all going to feel pretty dumb in a few months when they go “OH This isn’t so bad actually. I can deal with this!” just don’t post here anymore bro, they are at trolling level at this point.
To the h8ers:
Anyone who is complaining here this is really really old hat and you should just play the game, and if you can’t figure it out your loss, keep trying or stop.
Also it’s kind of hard to knock every mes for playing an easy no skill class when most of us actually main other classes War/Thief/Mes/Ele 4 life <3 and BTW this game really isn’t that hard to figure out. Get some game sense, duel some people you’ll catch on. xD That or say I No skill face roll-> at which point then I have to ask if War thief and ele are the same? I’ve said it before but I still find mes more of a challenge to play than the other 3 against any decent player
To Thee JS!:
@Jonathan Sharp
Can we have some dev input on this. I get this is a rehashed cycle from quite a while ago and prob a waste of your time but can we just get some general thoughts maybe quell a bit of the indignation towards each side of the banter?
let me help if you worry about peoples reactions
One side you can say “Mes is a little to strong right now and we’re keeping our eyes on it! Thank you for your feedback!” in which case all us mes will be like "K! See you next month! waving When our phantasms refuse to move or something because of tool tip updates xD. is playful knocking
OR
The other side “Mes is what we anticipated they’d be at currently. Thank you all your feedback is valuable to us.” in which case all the people mad face at this will just go PvE and hate your PvP for the current build
OR
your typical neutral kind of posts “We are watching the forums and taking data thank you for your feedback!” at which point the QQing will just continue <- same out come if nothing is said.
“Maybe I was the illusion all along!”
You can mock and jest all you like, but the only true nerf to mesmers that have happened since launch is the “no clone on dodged” feature (which was rightfully put in place). The class still stands as one of the two strongest solo class and team class for PvP unquestioned. Either the Mesmer needs to be toned down or every class needs to be brought up.
Look at the Warriors for example. They said the Warrior class is where it should be….they are a joke in PvP. No decently skilled person playing a Mesmer/Thief/Guardian/Necromancer/Ranger should lose to a Warrior. Engineers also got the short end of the stick for PvP in comparison to Thief and Mesmer.
