The problem ANet has here is two-fold:

1. You can’t make people wait unreasonably long queue times for a match. People will get bored and quit.

2. You can’t put people into matches against foes who statistically will just stomp them into the dirt. People will get frustrated and ragequit.

What is needed is a way to allow players to agree to face potentially higher-tier teams, but with incentives for their choice. This should be an opt-in system where you can check an option that says “Allow me to be matched against higher tiers/divisions”. If you are placed in such a match, you will lose no pips for a loss, and may even win pips if you performed decently enough. (And this should be more lenient than it was in the previous season. If you’re in a team of Rubies versus all Diamonds, just getting to 200-500 should be sufficient for a 1 pip reward. Making it to 400-500 would be 2 or even 3 pips.)

Why are people disgusting? Because they aren’t jumping on the pity train for you? All the top end players complained about carrying bad players and wanted only players of their skill level. Fine, wish granted. However, there are only so many players in that top range of MMR so the player pool to choose from is smaller. Now you are getting what you wanted except it’s not being delivered to you fast enough so you’re complaining.

The funny part is that when all of those “salty little sapphires” were complaining about the losing streaks very very few of the people who rushed up the ladder to legendary had any sympathy for them. It was all “you’re were you belong scrub” and “gitgud/L2P”. Now that you’re on the top and it’s lonely up there you’re all kitten because people are showing you the same level of sympathy they received from players like you. I believe that is what people call karma.

They’re aware of the problem. They did some fixes and got the queue times faster. Then S2 started and people like you didn’t want to have the same kind of MMR finder as unranked so it only gives you people close to your MMR. When people complained about getting farmed and being on huge losing streaks the response from those on winning streaks was “don’t play for a few weeks”. So after the good players told the bad players to wait a few weeks there is now QQing about having to wait an hour. Are you saying it’s alright to tell players with lower MMR to not play for weeks but not ok to have people wait for an hour to get a queue?

And is it wrong you have to have such a long queue time? Maybe. It depends on what the benchmark for a long queue time is. Some games have that as an average at times depending on player base. Before SWTOR did server mergers low population servers would go weeks without a queue pop. The higher population ones would average about an hour.

Still is it bad you have to wait an hour? Sure, but have you heard the saying becareful what you wish for because you just might get it? Well, you got it. You got a system where people inferior to you won’t be teamed with you and won’t be a higher division than you, however you also got those same queue times that players with extremely high MMR like some of the Abjured players had been experiencing since before HoT was released. That’s what happens when you get elitist about matchmaking. The top 5% get a smaller range to choose from and thus less games. It’s just simple statistics.

Now, for this season it won’t change just like the bottom 25% didn’t get any changes to make it less horrible for them so you aren’t getting any changes either. Afterwards, for S3 it might but unless there is a surge in players I don’t see it happening. Not with some decent MMOs being released during this current season and after the disaster of the previous season. It’s really not a surprise Colin left at this point. It’s like he saw a sinking ship and decided to jump.

At this point they can keep catering to the top 5~10% and lose players or change something and make the 90~95% players happy at the expense of whiners in the top 10%.

Myself, I’ve pretty much moved on from this game. Not because I was on some big losing streak, in fact the last day I played I had gone through 3 almost 4 tiers on a win streak. Then a friend gave me a quest pass to another game that offers me so much more than standing in HotM to get queued up with 8 necromancers. There is so little to offer by the game as it currently is that I have no desire to log on. That may change but as it is this game is really boring.

So basically saying nobody really feels any sympathy for your problem. They are more concerned about this game is bad for the larger playerbase than a few people facing long queue times because they wanted a shiny badge to show they are better than others.

Besides you should be thanking this horrible people for keeping your post from being pushed all the way to page 3 and beyond for lack of replies and interest.

tl:dr They know about your queue times and they aren’t going to do anything about it until after the season is over.

I personally didn’t notice any differences in queue times after I got to the 2nd legendary. I still think it counts as legendary and it doesn’t divide ppl according their prestige. I play on EU servers and in prime time I have no issues with the queue times, they are usually somewhere between 5-10mins which is just ok for me. There is not so many ppl in legendary division so you can’t expect to have 5 mins queue times outside of prime time, don’t be fool seriously.

What’s with these “you said this” and “you wanted this” generalizations? Did all the Legendary players really get together and say these things and kick sand in your face? Stop taking out your anger at the matchmaking system on other players. Everybody’s stuck in the same machine.

Are the people who are condemning “elitist” matchmaking and the desire to be matched with similarly skilled players suggesting they’d prefer it otherwise? Would you like to be matched up against Legendary players? Or just players from everywhere thrown in together? It won’t be fun.

The problem that he was highlighting was that the queues are extraordinarily long because the time thresholds for expanding the search range are too long. Since we can’t invent more players to play the game, the fix would seem to be to more readily allow Legendary players of different prestige tiers to be matched together. Stop getting hurt feelings over every little thing you see.

Second legendary didn’t seem to increase my queue times either @Miyu.

I have observed that it isn’t just that there isn’t enough people. I have seen that there are plenty of people queueing in legendary, however, it still takes forever to get matched with the same people over and over…. Atleast shorten those queue times if it is going to be with the same people.

300 or more point losses are rarely ever caused by a single player. If the end result is something like 80-500, it just tells the match making system is utterly unfair or broken and I have had more than my fair share of such games or even bigger losses and also a freaking 500-6 win. There is absolutely nothing competitive about winning 500-6, even though I was on the winning side (none of us died, enemy had absolutely zero chances). How many people would want to regularly spectate basketball games which end like 100-1 or 1-100? This is one main reason why GW2 spvp streams got so few views.

A lot of players quit because of constantly getting lopsided matches and diminished player base is a loss for everyone, especially Arenanet.

I also think part of the huge blowouts and wins are not caused by the match making algorithm, but these unwise changes:
A) removal of “tanky” amulets and “who bursts first to win” meta
B) you always lose a pip, no matter if the final score is 499-500 or 0-500, so many players stop playing when enemy has 150-200 point lead, even though come back could still be possible
C) losing a pip vs completely superior team is extremely aggravating, no matter how well you play, it doesn’t seem to matter what you do AFK or try hard, as you cannot carry a team alone. Frustration leads to less gaming and psychological thing to lose even more

There are ways to fix this problem, but it must all be done fast, not make players wait yet another week:
A) bring back the removed amulets as the current burst meta is just a recipe for snowballing, even though some players enjoy it. I haven’t seen that amulet removal lead to a more healthy or varied meta, instead we just got much more burst and tons of necros.
B) more fair match making (either based on MMR or division pip range alone, but not both)
C) rewarding pips based on the MMR difference e.g. if you manage to lose only little bit vs much higher MMR team, you do not lose a pip, you might even gain a pip and similarly if a high MMR team wins your low MMR team with low margin, they might lose a pip or gain none

What makes things worse: Arenanet doesn’t comment these threads and they don’t even seem to acknowledge the problem or do anything about it. I predict Season 3 will be a ghost town.

Anet should just make prestige x # not be a separate divisions in the formula.

Allow legendary prestige x # be able to face anyone in legendary and also the last 2 tiers of diamond. This will solve the majority of the Q times problems and keep the majority of players out of legendary

I honestly believe Anet should make Emerald → Legendary be able to lose tiers / division. This will stop the MMR hell in early ruby where players get bad teammates.

I understand that everyone wants the back piece and I am all for changing the formula into a achievement track like we currently have but remove division cross.

On your last sentence I can agree. My point is that after the players that were getting farmed while the top players were loving the new system complained about continuous blow out losses the only person of the top tier players that noticed a problem was Zuko. Everyone else just kicked sand in the face of those getting farmed. Their posts were about a problem but it didn’t stop people from jumping in with their superior status to tell them that is where they belonged. Now it’s come back around and those same that were getting kicked while they were down are now laughing. Rule #1 of the internet, don’t post something on a forum and not expect to get trolled or attacked. Suck it up and quit being salty about it.

The larger point to be made is this system of separating people by MMR has overall seemed like a failure. For the bottom half getting farmed every match was no fun and they hung up their gloves and left for PvE, another game or unranked. For the top half it was fun for a while getting blowout wins but the piper came to collect eventually and now you’re feeling it. Any person with half a brain could have seen this coming. Like I said, you got what you wanted but it came with a price just like everything else in the world. People are now paying it.

So I could give those at the top the same advice they gave to those at the bottom.
1.) Stop playing for a week and let people move to where they belong.
2.) Play unranked.
3.) Form a group (with those same players it might cut down that queue time)

Or…
4.) Consider that this current matchmaking system for ranked might not be in the best interest of the game as a whole and start thinking of how it could be improved other than shortening queue times.
Because when you have the captain jumping ship and the game going F2P to pull in players it’s a sign that things aren’t looking so good numbers wise.

I am sorry but I disagree with you. I much rather have a grind if that means a larger spvp population and lower queue times. Than the current system, which will lead to tiny spvp population and impossibly long queue times.

You are advocating an elitistic system, which leads to diminishing player base. The current system is obviously an epic fail. The amount of completely blow out games is way out of control. What is the pleasure of winning 500-10 or losing 5+ times with 200 points or more?

I enjoy fair even games. I don’t mind losing 490-500 as I know it could have easily been the opposite 500-490 win. Maybe the loss was because of my own mistake or inferior build? Maybe something I could have done to make it a win? But if my loss is 80-500, then I know the game was just rigged and if I win with similar margin, I know the enemy had zero chances. I also don’t mind such huge losses or wins happen once in a blue moon, but if they become a norm, then…

I am sorry, but any experienced game designer worth his salt will tell you what you propose and what Arenanet is now trying will NOT work. The only thing I agree with you is that higher MMR players or those who placed legendary division in previous season should start from higher division.

But you cannot tell to the player base: oh gee, just “enjoy” those utterly unfair and lopsided games for 1 month. Have another 50-100 of those blowout games more, but then it will get better. Or maybe not (no evidence that games got any better).

Players play for fun and rewards. Players like a system, which gives them a sense of fairness. Take out both the fairness and fun and a lot of players leave. Some never come back.

Increase all divisions to 50 pips.
Remove rewards completely from tiers / crossing a division.
Buff PvP reward track.
Allow players to lose tiers / division.
When you cross a division you start at 10 pips.
When you lose a divison you start at 40 pips.
Do not reset division / pips on a new season.
Remove cross division from the legendary back piece requirements, this will remove the incentive people have for reaching high division.
Allow us to queue from anywhere. (I would be happy with only hotjoins).
Make matchmaking 50/50 but make higher mmr players start higher up in the season.

You know we are having unbalanced matches right the way through the league right? Like having a duo in a solo queue pulling a 5 man guild team.

I have spent the best part of a week trying to get in to ruby, with the most pip I can get is 4 in sapphire T5, before I end up facing a full 5 man team and being smacked back down to 0 pips. Frustration is not the word. My rage could melt planets.

Matchmaking should be based on divisions and pips alone not MMR, otherwise you have actually decent players forced to carry really bad teams against bad odds and taking longer times to get in higher divisions. I know couple of people who shouldn’t be in low divisions right now but they are.

Agreed. The Legendary Title would be way better if given after Legendary x1 not, at the beginning of it.

Grinders can go to Legendary and stop playing… so… well… you need those players, so let them grind with the pro till they stop doing it.

Legendary Title should hold more value, IMO.

I’m going to point out the painfully obvious here. You main problem is lack of players, yet you implemented a system that actively screws over the avg player and make them want to quit….
If you just stuck to 1 system, i.e the pip system and randomly made teams , you could easily have teams of 1 legendary player each, 2 diamonds and 2 rubies. Result in close matches and no one mad. The better player will advance in a random system. Where right now you would be matching 5 legendary vs 5 rubies = 5 really kittened off rubies and quite pvp all together…

Thank you for your reply, Evan. It is nice to know that Arenanet is reading these threads.

Despite I am personally not liking excessive grind, I am for increasing the grind if it leads to higher player base. Season 1 match making would be better than the current one. Neither is perfect of course. Just keep MMR of unranked or ranked separate, so that players could not intentionally lose in unranked to tank their MMR. And please let high MMR and legendary division player start from Ruby or Amber next season. There is no reason to play such players into division 1 at start.

There should always be incentive to get as high score as possible. The current system treats 0-500 and 499-500 loss the same way for your pip loss and this is BAD.

Small player base creates a lot of problems with ANY match making algorithm: either huge amount of blow out games or very long queue times. With very small player base MMR often becomes also very inaccurate. You need a reasonably large enough sample base and lots of played games to get accurate MMR.

This game mode really needs a higher player base, so Arenanet should do all in their power to make it more attractive for a large player base. I am well aware that in the lower tiers this would mean of a lot of inexperienced players and pve players. It is still better than spending big part of precious time waiting in queue.

Stop using division to queue people with. Come back to MMR vs MMR. The system was good, got 3 years of finetuning and was way better than grinding Leagues to get matches.

Is it just quicker queue times?
With great players MMR that don’t have time to grind 200 games to get Legendary but are able to fights them, why not doing MMR vs MMR only. Scratch LEAGUE and divide MMR by divisions for the BADGES.

We ask this for years. I don’t want to 1v1 in the MIST for 1 hour to get a queue pop.

This is their only alternative actually. I prefer playing unranked but everyone is on the grind of leagues. This come from the psychological aspect of MMORPG players, that think that SKILL come through GRINDING. It’s really sad that you have a SKILL based system (nothing to grind to get equal builds) but ranked us on GRINDING games.

Here is some thoughts for you:

1- Make the Heart of the MIST a MOBA package target for that audience: (so you can work on SKILLS and stop catering to the grinders)

Matchmaking doesn’t count pips past the end of legendary, so prestige count won’t affect queue times.

It was said already, but with an accurate or prestigious ladder you get people on each extreme with long queue times as the population to pull from is smaller. Queue times in unranked are never this bad because we expand the mmr search range quite far over time. We could do the equivalent expansion of the ladder search range, but there will be just as many (if not more) people then complaining about all the legendary players in their ruby matches.

To summarize the issues people have brought up:
An accurate ladder rewards skill at the cost of queue time.
Reducing queue time would require frustrating players with imbalanced matches (either by skill, or just visual ladder badge).
Making the ladder more about grind gets more players to legendary, but there is no prestige.

What would make legendary players happy to keep playing the game? Is it just quicker queue times? What if you could do other things while waiting? What if there was something other than leagues all together like unranked arena that legendary players could go to until more players make it to legendary?

I’m going to point out the painfully obvious here. You main problem is lack of players, yet you implemented a system that actively screws over the avg player and make them want to quit….
If you just stuck to 1 system, i.e the pip system and randomly made teams , you could easily have teams of 1 legendary player each, 2 diamonds and 2 rubies. Result in close matches and no one mad. The better player will advance in a random system. Where right now you would be matching 5 legendary vs 5 rubies = 5 really kittened off rubies and quite pvp all together…

1. You are rambling nonsense right now. Legendaries dont get queued with Rubies at all currently, there is a whole bunch of people in diamond in between.

2. If you just randomly made teams, then what is the point of any MMR/Pip system at all? It takes one second of critical thinking to realize your idea doesn’t make any sense.

So you fast tracked players to legendary and they now complain about long queue times, wasnt that one rather obvious to predict?
On the other hand are players quitting because constant uphill battles. Also easily predicted, since the majority of players is… surprise… average. So that is causing long queue times in sapphire/ruby too.

Its quite easy to solve though…. either pips or mmr. Not both.

Either you only pull people from a range of pips and RANDOMLY put them in teams.

Or you put players of same mmr on a team against players with a better/worse mmr and reward/take away pips accordingly. For this there has to be a soft reset of mmr after each season and there has to be a pre-season (soloqueue only, random team placement) to determine starting point for each.
Everybody not participating in pre-season and not having a placing above ruby in last season starts in amber. Amber and smaragd are the only divisions with training wheels failsafes.
Everybody participating starts emerald, sapphire or ruby.

Both ways solve your long queue times problem, IF you manage to adjust piprange / mmr brackets accordingly (fine-tuning).

Mixing both ways has created only frustrated players, cheating (season 1) and long queue times.

Stop mixing different matching systems, it is NOT working. Pick one, stick with it, refine it.

And btw, if you show every players mmr, nobody will complain about the badge anymore… wanna bet? They will complain how they are underrated and others are just lucky and get overrated all the time… but hey, thats pvp forums for you…

The biggest problem is that the endgame is the legendary rank. Now that I am here, there is no real incentive to push further.

1) At this point playing is for my own benefit. Any I going to outplay some pro league guys and end up on the 5 person legendary ladder? no
2) Do I get on a team for playing ranked at legendary? no
3) Do I get any in game reward? no
4) Do I have longer que times? yes
5) Are my matches much harder now? yes
6) Do I want faster que at the expense of lower division team mates? Probably not
7) Did I expect this to happen with the new matching system of season two? yes
8) How could you improve this? Que outside the mist.

So giving those 5 things, I just unranked. When I am in a competitive mood, I que ranked. But at this point, I know my build inside and out. I know what I counter and what counters me, etc. So now point waiting for the matches, unless I really really want them.

Unranked is fun, stress-less environment, where I can play shatter mesmer and do ok. Game becomes much more enjoyable when under less pressure.

Admit you made a catastrophic mistake with this seasons ranked matchmaking and change it sooner rather than later.

Understand that the only way you increase the pvp playerbase is to provide a fun environment for players of all ability to participate.

Stop pandering to a small minority under the delusion that Anet is building some sort of premiere e-sport.

Remove division lock beyond legendary so legendary1 can play with legendary2 or legendary3.

It must be fixed becouse legends dont que on legend acc but play on smurf acc and climb. Look at java who is doin 4th acc to legend. He is destroying weaker players and slowing their progression and probably this is source of hate when ppl are complaining about matchmaking.

The most infuriating thing about this was that I was watching other legends literally get 3 queue pops/games within the time I was sitting in my 50+ min queue. I don’t care how close to diamond players they were with regards to pip range that’s just kittened up. And I’m sure there is a way to get me a match without having to put me in a game with rubies. I doubt that’s even possible if I were to wait a full 2 hours in queue. What would be nice is just condensing whatever pip range expansion is done within a full 2 hour queue and maybe condensing it to 30 min.

im currently in t3 legendx1 and my queue times are 3-15min , depending on what time i queue up on EU

and i have to say i had the most close and balanced matches in legend and last tier of diamond, so im really not a fan of expanding the pip range, only the guys in last tier of diamond should play with legends

i think the only obvious problem is the lack of legend players, but that doesnt mean that everyone should be pushed to legend, its just a matter of time, im sure in 1-2 weeks more ppl are going to be legend

would be interessting to know how many people are legendary in each region, i would guess that right now , maybe 100-150 players are legendary on EU, so that is really not much

EST time, on sunday night. monday i just stopped trying after 45mins cause had to go raid. tuesday night i got 3 matches in with the same 10 people but managed 3 matches within an hour or so

@Deniara Devious.3948 You will be doing Season 1 mistake again and making it into a grind. The entire point of Season 2 was to stop everyone from getting to legendary. I am sorry to sound like a jerk but this is the reality; not everyone is suppose to be able to reach diamond / legendary.

S2 is a grind for the majority of players. God forbid you precious legendary players grind a little bit more. The anti smurfing mechanisms were enough to stop players being carried to legendary.

I honestly just wish we would get more rewards from legendary. Adding more rewards would make players still want to gain pips even though they are at the highest they can go league wise. I know I would play more than a few games a day if it meant greater rewards

Adding more rewards is easy, but getting them will still be difficult with hour-long queue times.

Yes, most matches are blowouts even in diamond division. I rarely get close matches.

I agree that sometimes it’s better to make the queue a bit longer in order to have more balanced matches. Waiting 5 or maybe even 10 minutes to get a more fair match is ok. But when the queue time starts surpassing the time you spend in an actual match is when it stops being ok in my opinion. This is true because during queue time, what can you do? Stare at your screen while waiting in Heart of the Mists? Are we supposed to find something else to do while we’re trying to play a game? Maybe after a 10 minute queue you should just make it so that it matches with whoever is closest to your MMR, instead of prolonging the queue time forever.

And I think that this issue would be solved if you simply just enabled us PvPers to do something while we’re waiting for a queue pop. Allow duelling in Heart of the Mists in form of 1v1 and even 2v2. This would not only be good practice and warm up for actual PvP but a good and fun way to spend time as a dedicated PvPer.

But maybe this would eventually stop being enough for some people. So you could also enable us to do more things, give us more options. Such as doing open world PvE content and even WvW. This would be really hard to implement, I get that. But high mmr players get so bored once they reach high mmr and the really long queue times that they just stop doing PvP. If they had more things to do instead of just waiting for endless queues, maybe more would be willing to queue.

I’m a high mmr player and I see this issue where people reach Legendary division and stop caring for pips altogether. Some do this to the point they start playing really bad while saying they do not care, going afk, trolling, just creating a negative environment among players. If you made it so that Legendary division would be ranked by some sort of rating instead of pips, make it visible for everyone to see it, it would become more serious, more competitive and then rewarded the players for their efforts with something other than llamas I could see it get more interesting in high mmr. At the moment I think that a lot of players reach Legendary division and then kinda give up on PvP and stop playing it as much or at all.

TLDR: Anet please start encouraging players to be more competitive in Legendary division. It should help making people actually want to queue for PvP high mmr and be excited to play it. This should also encourage lower division players to play more and try to climb to Legendary division. And if you’re really going to make us wait for long queues, at least enable us to do something fun while we wait.

Pretty much. I have been in Tier 5 of emerald for almost 2 weeks now, although I haven’t played since Sunday (when I had 9 losses in a row) cause it was affecting me so badly I had to take a break. Its basically I keep getting 1-2 wins then have a succession of losses. After 1-2 wins I seem to: get placed with players who were in the teams I beat; players who are simply not very good; or get matched against teams who clearly have a significantly better mmr to the team I get matched with. This has happened consistently. I have tried grouping with others, I have tried playing stronghold rather than conquest, nothing has worked to get me to the next tier. Its grindy and the constant backsliding across a relatively long period is disheartening.

Yeh you go into a match that’s predicted to lose and feel like you shouldn’t bother. Going up a tier requires 3-4 wins in a row and the games are more like snowball 2 games then get snowballed 2 games. You can’t progress unless you play over and over till you get a lucky break.
