Please stop the new/Pve player "hate"
I have no problem with new players, as long as they stay in unranked until they learn to actually play. And as far as knowing who is new, when 4 guys are capping home at the start of a round it’s a good guess they’re new. And trying to teach them mid ranked game is more frustrating than it should be. They dont listen.

To some degree I agree with you, I often get frustrated with team mates and I groan inside when I know I have a very new player on my team. However, I understand they want the rewards that come from playing in ranked. I was lucky I had a mentor to teach me pvp, and I have tried to pass that on, I just wish more people would recognize that its not the fault of the new person necessarily as an outcome of the game rewards and matchmaking.
I get called bad everyday. Mostly its the team as a whole doing bad rotations and losing the individual fights.
Most players point out the flaws they see team mates doing and not their own.
I also feel only 10% of the players are like what you described

People don’t like to lose so they will tell you their kitten. Especially the weakest player of your team do this sometimes. I like especially when there are no teamplay/support and multiple foes on me all the time as i play a necro then some random guy start the blame war call me terrible that i could kill in 1v1 with 1 hand in seconds.
They just need someone to blame for their own weakness. Block them all
I love pve players. I pve myself sometimes.
Just don’t kitten join ranked without training first, I will suplex you what are you doing
That bull makes me wanna flip my computer. That’s like someone joining a chess tournament or a soccer league or any other sport/game tournament with only a cursory understanding of the rules and with only a glancing manual read as experience.
You may know what some of the buttons, some of the strategies do, but PVP ranked is a different beast and people depend on you to assist them in certain ways at certain times for their ranking.
Joining without preparing, even a little , is a disservice to yourself, your team, and the game. There’s an unranked button right there . Not pushing it is almost the epitome of arrogance.

I get this, but unfortunately I no longer see a difference in unranked and ranked without the ability to queue with a premade group. To use a WoW example – its all just random battlegrounds now and with a random group, you get random results. So whether people learn in ranked or unranked makes no difference to me.

I also get this, but I’d rather play with a group of people that care at least marginally about whether they win or lose than people…say, playtesting new builds.

No no no. Here’s what you do: add then to your friend’s list, and give them a nickname of “meanieface” or something like that so you remember them. Keep in mind that this person is pretty much always angry and easily triggered. Then, when you see then in HotM or a match, just go up to them and act REALLY peppy and SOOO happy to see them!!1! They’re the greatest after all, so much fun to be around. Always gets an amusing reaction in my experience.
Normally I just silently read posts and move on, only commenting from time to time.
However, I want to comment on a growing trend that I am seeing.First off, I would like to ask you, how do you know for certain that someone is a pve player. When it is the intended goal of Anet to get people to balance and play across all game modes, there are very few players that never set foot in WvW or PvE and only play PvP these days. Now, alot of us like me, love PvP and play it the most, as in I play it most every night of the week and only branch out from time to time.
However, you have to stop blaming the quality of your matches on pve players. It might be a bad day for some, it might be something you are doing, it might of been a bad roll of the dice. Any one of these three are the actual reasons, your match was lost.
Secondly, new players are the lifeblood of every game mode. You were new once and I am sure you didnt appreciate being referred to in a derogatory manner due to your newness. Most new players know they are not that great yet, and are in fact trying to learn.
If you want to make a change in how things are matched, how things are managed in PvP my suggestion is you turn this anger and hate to constructive criticism that will actually help minimize blow out matches and improve the quality of matches for new and Vet players. You could also offer to help someone who is a suspected PvEer or New player….
first, how to find out if someone new? You just block him and check AP. I had many games with players under 1k AP, playing more difficult classes. What they do? They run to enemy blob and die instantly. Do you think it’s fair towards long time pvpers? To lose a game because some newbie just giving points away? There is unranked, then random arenas, go learn, then play ranked, however (now including me) everybody simply farming ascended armor. Anet had good idea, sadly they * it up as aleways just by being to lazy to think deeper. PVP is now PVE, you just farm ascended armor.
its ok you can only get 1 set of ascended. In another couple days everyone will have their ascended set and be gone

Thing is Un-ranked is kitten as a training ground. How is one supposed to learn proper team mechanics, etc while playing with other people who little to no idea of what to do. One is like Varsity ball while the other is akin to college level play in a decent division. Even that doesn’t really equate as these kids would have a practiced idea of plays and how the game structure is.
From my experience i can and have had some matches (unranked) where if i didn’t know better i would think im beast. That was as a core power necro. I’ve also gone in to try and test new builds but it’s hard to do when your entire team is camping spawn after sweeping all three points off the start. Same goes if you happen to be on the other end spectrum. Unranked is sketchy at best and even worse during the actual season. Some kind of tutorial or training ground option would be helpful here.
Aside from Anet spoon feeding us the answers i see a few options available.
The community could in some way hold training days or times in unranked sort of like the community tourneys but for helping new people instead. However its easier to blame x-kittenty player/players and kitten and moan than to do something constructive.
People could be more helpful during matches and not just be a kitten during the last 2 mins of the game when they realize all their personal awesomeness and tunnel vision the last 8 minutes didn’t magically carry the team to a win.
Also and i think this is something that many don’t realize about team based games random or otherwise, it is possible to have a team of decent to good players, who still play as a kitten team.

Yesterday I had a thief in my team. Cause of the recent experiences playing with thieves I asked him if he knew what to do. Ofc he didnt. I tried to explain to him, he told me to shut up. I asked him why he plays pvp and told him that I dont want to lose cause of players like him. He said he wants easy ascended gear and he doesnt care if he loses.

How do you think, how many of those who want to learn would stay in ranked if there were no reward at all? Ascended set for newbies is a lot. They farm there. They will continue farming it for next seasons sets. The biggest mistakes Anet did is by allowing under lvl 80 in pvp to join ranked and adding ascended set as reward for new currency. now those newbies are bringing others down. I used to always help for new players, now they can go and kitten themselves, will never take newbies to pve activities.
its ok you can only get 1 set of ascended. In another couple days everyone will have their ascended set and be gone
By that time our rating will be? Also, how can you be sure they not gonna simply farm new currency for next season? Also gold reward stays same. 20g for old timers is blah, 20g to newbie for doing nothing, gold mine.

I have no problem with PvEers joining PvP, but when they can so easily join ranked with so little experience, it affects the games for the rest of those who are trying to advance. They end up hindering players by complete accident. They obviously don’t want to interfere, but they do because they think they’re ready by rank 20. It’s just not enough. Every player should have to prove they know how Conquest/Stronghold works (depending on which one you want to play) and that they are competent enough not to be a hinderance, unless they’re having an off day as you mentioned, which is understandable. Of course someone’s going to troll their way past any requirements and throw matches or just play horribly, but those aren’t really PvEers. They’re just a waste of time.
Xca just told us about someone who doesn’t care about PvP and just plays for easy ascended gear. There’s nothing really wrong with attracting PvEers to PvP for gear, but they need to be experienced enough first before they can be given the privilege of doing the PvP that gets them that gear. If someone is willing to try hard enough to play enough unranked games and go through any requirements for the gear, then they should absolutely be given the chance to acquire it. Or else we get situations where players just throw matches because they’re rewarded for it. It’s also another reason why losses should never give pips, ever. The only time you can gain pips from losing is if you played well, because someone who played their best should get something. Nothing big, but something. So that if they just throw a match, they have to put effort into throwing it! And of course they don’t want to put effort into getting their gear, so it’ll help deter a good amount of match throwers who just want gear.

This!
Nobody should get any kind of reward/recognition for losing, that’s why it’s called losing! The sole exception in this particular case should be the top player from the losing team, and I’m not talking about getting rewarded, but just not lose any pips for their effort. The only problem is the point system got messed up in the worse possible way. Now you only get points for playing death match. No points for decapping (which is integral to the game), no points for capping (which again is integral to the game), no points for side tasks (beasts, tranq, skyhammer, etc., which are mechanics that always decide who wins’loses). Now you just camp mid, play a death match, rez a couple of downed players, and get rewarded top player. The old point system was infinitely better than this, at least you could see who really influenced the game.
What is kitten?
I get the visual…but you L33t types use it for everything.
Ex: “I was kittening with kittens on freaking kitten sky hammer , stupid kittens kitten all over and we got kittened.”
I get you veterans like your buzz words, but I’d really like to know exactly what noobs have to do wrong to make them kitten/a kitten.

what they already do? Kittens have their playground, veterans have theirs. When kitten wants to become veteran, he has to finish his playground. Now kittens are going to dogs playground and having a kitten everywhere. Is it more clear to you?
After this game became f2p…it became ruined like any other f2p game.
Now the game is not about which team is better, it’s about who has less new players who farm items. Until you level 80 your place is unranked, want to grow, play unranked and come to ranked. You must prove that you deserved to play there.

Wait….so kittens have kittens?
How do kittens turn in to dogs…wouldn’t they turn in to cats?
And if I understand correctly, after you have mittened enough to enter ranked wouldn’t you at least be a veteran kitten?
Took me a minute to figure out as well, but on here at least “kitten” is the auto-correct word in place of swears. It does make for some interesting word play though.

Your kidding right? You don’t judge whose old and new on AP do you? Did it ever occur to you that people that mostly PvP have hardly any AP after playing for years. I have very low AP and have been in PvP for three years.
Elitism kills communities. New blood is important to the game. Ranked PvP tactics are different from Unranked. People are casual there. At some point New people have to go into ranked. Some will do better then others. Accept that the real thing here is, that they need better training, not exclusion.

Well….suppose I’ve kittened around in unranked long enough now. Time to take my kitten up to the big leagues and kitten some kittens off in ranked!
In all seriousness, agree with OP. If you want your PvP community to grow you need to spend less time insulting the noobs and more time trying to help us out. Be less bad players if there were more mentors…and I have met a few
Read this thread and you know how we find out someone is new in pvp.

I have played only pvp for the first year after the release, I got more than 1k AP quite fast. Don’t forget, you get AP for first time achievements too. MY good friend is playing only thief, only pvp and after half year he managed to get 2k+ AP, magic? Now you get AP even for dailies, so yeah, you can easily judge people about their skill from APs. I don’t say that guy with 14k might be better than guy with 1k, but I am sure that that guy with under 1k will definitely not be as knowledgeable as 99% of those 10k+, and my experience proves it. In this season I have already played 110+ games, during gfirst 50 games my win rate was 65%…now 50ish. At least 30% of all the games I had a guy with less than 1k AP during absolute ******. Dude, you can even see before the game who is who and who will definitely ruin it. However, like I said before, this season is lost like all others before (at least with those pips we had luck to run away from lowbies), now lets just farm new currency. I wish you luck not getting me in your team as I just play now and not really care about the win.
I don’t hate pve players, I play it a lot myself and it took me ages to get into pvp, but when I did start to pvp, I used my guild and got them to help teach me how to have a good game. We do weekly PVP and work on our strategies, I still think its the best way to learn for someone new to this form of the game, I try to pass on what I have learnt from others, but will say its much easier to learn on comms than having to try to explain in mapchat. Yeah, you’ll always get the noobs and some won’t want to listen to you, but a lot of them will learn or actually want to learn. Talking about excluding them will just be the death of pvp.
I actually think these forums are one of the worst things to read as there are soo many elitists here who think they are above the rest of the community.
Don’t you still have to be pvp rank 20 before you can join the ranked season?
The biggest barrier for new players is the total lack of anything resembling a tutorial on how things work, or how to contribute. Which is why I am going to ref this thread AGAIN! Devs pay attention!

They need to raise the minimum required rank for playing in ranked to 50, also you need a minimum win ratio of 50%, and make it so that playing in custom arenas no longer gives rank points so pvers farming dailies cant rank up that way and have to play in unranked, and atleast have some knowledge of what to do.
I had a guy in my last match say “we have to lose this one” When I asked why he said “I want my rating to drop down to get easier fights so i can farm armor faster.” Then the kitten afks in spawn. Needless to say we lost that one. This is the sort of crap that happens when you get pvers that want to farm for prizes. Either we need to remove the rewards entirely so pvers won’t want to do it, or make it impossible for casual pve farmers to play in ranked in the first place.
Because no new players, wvwers or spvpers have ever gotten kicked from a dungeon, fractal or raid for not knowing what they are doing.

because its true i have talked to a bunch of people that has soon has they found out they could get ascended gear they started pvping and it has gotin worse. next season they need to make it so you only get rewards has you move up like one non repeatable reward in bronze, one in silver and so on the only ones that should be repeatable are the last 2 brackets it will keep pve players away
I wonder how pvers would feel if pvp/wvw players started joining in raids, using our pvp builds and causing them to fail over and over again? You can be sure we’d be kicked instantly from the group. Think about that for a second pvers, and let that sink in.

maybe next season they can give the pver rewards doing pve things instead of going to pvp to get them

you mean like they already do now? pve is already the most rewarding game mode. Before pvers get anything else, they should atleast make ascended gear purchasable in wvw too now.
If a bad PvE player joins ranked and they keep losing they’ll eventually just tank to the bottom of bronze where they belong whereas you’d just keep winning after that guy is no longer on your team if you were actually underrated.
You can’t just blame every loss on these “PvE players” when perhaps you’re maybe just not that good yourself.
(edited by fishball.7204)
PvE Players aren’t the problem
Starting them at 1200 (Average) MMR is a HUGE problem, and it causes all the hate from the player being a division they don’t deserve, thus ruining the game for all the other players (stomping and 500-10 stomps aren’t fun either way). Add to it the stress of trying to increase MMR when literal potatoes (as far as pvp knowledge goes) are on your team, and it leads to the animosity.
While I don’t condone the hate, this one is on ANet. Stop treating brand new-to-pvp pve-ers as if they are as good as a player with tons of experience.
(edited by BlackBeard.2873)
make it so that playing in custom arenas no longer gives rank points so pvers farming dailies cant rank up that way and have to play in unranked, and atleast have some knowledge of what to do.
This is a necessary change.

This argument is wrong.
If a “good” player gets into gold he is at +1500 rating. And at 1500 rating you’ll meet a lot of players that were lucky with their placing and don’t belong there. But they have to play a ton of games to drop down where they belong and most of them don’t.
This leads to a lot of bad matches.
Piken Square EU, maybe soon on your server.
OP, problem with pve players is not that they are new but there is quite few of them that came to pvp just for the ascended armor so they don’t care of they win or lose the match, they just afk in spawn.
And as mentioned above, as new player you get average MMR. If you have no clue how to play you will have a lot of bad matches and basically cause 4v5 until you drop to proper MMR.
As far as flaming goes – regardless how good or bad you are there will be always someone flaming you in some of the matches.
If most of them don’t play a lot of games then the probability of you seeing them is low in the first place. A few bad PvE players aren’t enough to influence your rating significantly at all if you are a good player. Out of hundreds of games of the season maybe a few will be caused by a poor placement but for the most part they won’t be influenced by these outliers.
Blaming PvE players is just an excuse for baddies to feel good about themselves, just like those commanders in WvW who blame wipes on “PvE players” when they’re the ones driving 20 people into 60 and hoping to win.
The biggest mistakes Anet did is by allowing under lvl 80 in pvp to join ranked and adding ascended set as reward for new currency. now those newbies are bringing others down.
Oi guildie, I’m not 80 too by the way =)))
About them PvE players tho – they are usually easily recognizable. Pve-titles, pve-pets on rangers, pve builds overall (like staff ele and some crazy poop like axe-axe warrior). The main problem is that so-called “players” don’t even want to learn – they never bothered with guides, builds and at least basic training; I bet 99.99% of them are terrible in PvE too and cannot do raids because golem dps check is too complicated and bothersome.
So it is not even “hate”, I just simply despise that low-effort, brain-dead joke of a players.

Oi, i never bothered with guides either yet at the moment i feel very powerful against most DH’s in point fights.
Guides aren’t the be all end all for everything in every game.

Who cares about your ability or inability to kill DH? I don’t even care if temmates cannot kill them or kill them fast enough; guides and some basic sanity is needed for understanting the situation in the game and on the map; like rotation and stuff like that. It is much more important imho.
I’m pretty sure PvEers do this now just out of spite towards the PvPers. But honestly ultimately you can’t really blame them. This is what ANet intended. A competitive sport where people with only 5 hours of total PvP experience can join and help you completely crush your MMR or Ranking. You should do what I do if you are finding more of these on your team then actually competing PvPers and just #shrug, laugh, and record. Make sure you make it sound funny as hell. Oh and make sure not to block text chat from your stream or video, that is usually all the gold is at.
But at least I admit it!

I have mixed feelings on this. Normally I side with new players and against the elitism I see so commonly on the forums. But not in this case. I think that skilled players do have a legitimate gripe. In a ranked tournament every game is important and one inexperienced player can be devastating to the teams chances. Ranked tournaments are not the place to learn pvp.
You should at least know the layouts of the maps, the goals and strategies of each map, and the basics of your build. I don’t think you have to be incredibly skilled to play but just competent.
Unranked exists for learning and trial play. During one of my placement matches, I had one team mate say that he hadn’t played pvp for years and apologized for his possible performance. Everyone on team was like “why start with ranked?”

Because they just like to troll and hurt others for their laughs. Bannable offense in most other competitive PvP games if proof was put forward to the support team via screenshot or recording. Recording is the best way to get those types of Rank trolls removed from competitive PvP dev team’s games.
However in GW2 this behavior is highly encouraged by the PvP dev team. So can’t do any but either get gud enoth to carry these players so they don’t damage your rank, or just again #shrug, laugh, and record.

PVE guys can think about it this way. If your doing an lfg for tier 4 fractals, you probably want experienced players. You don’t want people joining that have never done them before or are still learning the mechanics. They have tier 1 for that. Same thing for ranked and unranked in pvp.

Oh the PvE guys will kick you in a heartbeat if you are under-performing in their Fractals they will not even let you into their Raid runs unless you have 40 or 60 insights. Again, Lol
