Getting ‘stuck’ in ruby is a very important topic regarding how best league should operate. We changed matchmaking to make the ladder more prestigious and so far it has done that. Divisions are aligning with skill level much better than season 1. The product of this change is that the bulk of players who hover around the middle of the mmr curve should stay in sapphire and ruby. Win rate will level out at 50% because there are plentiful players of similar mmr in the same division.

Should average players be able to climb out of the middle divisions by grinding? This removes prestige and can make matchmaking worse within a division, but always allows a sense of progression.

Should average players stay in the middle divisions because that’s where they belong at their skill level? This retains prestige and only improving skill will allow climbing, but rewards and progression stop at some point through the season.

Is there an incentive that could be added to league games for players who have reached their appropriate division and can no longer climb?

This statement is very strange considering how teams queue up against solo queue.

I noticed better games in Unranked also. Ranked games can be quite bad, because the backpiece is drawing players, of different skill levels, to it.

I’ve been casually playing in Ranked, making my way up, as I’m not really bothered about the backpiece. I did however get a pug of great people. After the game, we all teamed up in HoTM, as we had a good comp and we all managed to work really well together.

Pretty much sums up what i do. I started ranked this season very late and barely do more than a couple ranked matches per night (and not even every night).

I do however play a few unranked matches due to the fact that i actually get better closer matches in it. And i can team up with guildies/friends who are in completely different divisions without having to mess up peoples pip scores etc.

I dont care about the backpiece and giving the small amount of time i spend on this game dont expect to get it anyway. However all these PVE’rs are dying for the backpiece which means Ranked is infested with PVE’rs who dont have a clue and only have tunnel vision for the backpiece.

Unranked obviously has players testing new builds or classes but generally i would argue that these people are actually “trying” to learn about PvP and improve (or at least have fun), which can make for a better, less toxic experience.

People say T1 Ruby is the most toxic because they got match up with a Sapphire Rank who still farming their class win AP. When you match people with different goal it won’t end up happy ending. Cause Ruby will always feel bad losing and not so much the sapphire dude.

The cross division and play X class win game really make people think differently.

I can echo a lot of the sentiments in this thread.

Due to real life intervening I got a late start to the season, and I really feel higher sapphire (saph 4-5) where I’m at now is way worse than it was last season.

After ripping off a huge win streak I then ran into a horrendous loss streak (9 games in a row spread out over a few days) and literally in half those games I was the only one thst managed to get any points from cap/decap/kills/etc…

I wish I had thought to take some screenshots after some of those losses. I even remember asking one game how I was the only one that managed to get any points and someone on my team said "points aren’t everything ".

Normally I’d agree but when we just got stomped 500-30 and literally I had all 30 points there’s a problem…

I made it to onyx on ele and necro as needed solo and duo queuing but it was so random with team skill. I went down to 9 pips diamond on a losing streak and from there to onyx with only 3 losses. The hours were U.S. eastern from around 6pm-9pm when I duo’d it was with a rev and I only ran the meta for each class. Hopefully that’s helpful.

My feelings are this.

Something like Diamond Rank should be a mark of Skill.

Whereas something like a Legendary Item should be a mark of persistence.

I love it how all the trolls come out just to say git gud git better l2p even though half of us have been playing ranked just as long as they have or even longer and had a really high win rate before, so funny. Plz stop feeding the trolls. Everyone knows it’s a team game if your team consists of mostly new players just now learning how to play pvp you can be the best player in the game and lose if the other team consists of all people who have been playing as long as you have and are as experienced as you, even a child would know this. ( And lets not forget about premade vs solo players that never has been and never will be a fair match unless the premade is new to pvp and just learning which some are but most aren’t)

Found this season pretty enjoyable tbh!
Last season I stuck at it and got to Ruby but it was frustrating at times, this season I’ve just cruised through to Diamond. The win streak bonus has made things really easy once you get in a good groove. Only a few times have I been on teams that have been super bad with people running round like idiots but once I hit Ruby things went pretty well!
I’ve made it a habit this season to not get stuck using one class and refusing to change, if I needed to I hopped to another class depending on the competition and have found other team mates have done the same if needed.
I have played through on my own without teaming up and have rarely come across more than 2 members teamed up on either side.
Quite honestly, this season has made me feel much better about the GW2 PVP scene!

You cruised through to diamond, just one easy win by easy win by win. What have you achieved through it? Right, nothing! You had no competition. Why do you play PvP if you dont have a fair competition? If you just want to win, I can give you some games where you (basically) cannot lose. What does the nice diamond next to you name tell you? Yes, thanks to mmr-hell (it exists) also nothing. A ruby-player could in fact be better than you. However, the matchmaking does not let him through. In other words, you may feel great now. But you achieved in my eyes simply nothing.

I saw that too, but based on what I’ve been reading here, it counts as a minority case compared with people making f2p accounts and mimicking their performance on their main. We also weren’t given information on whether they changed classes on the f2p, and solo/team status on each account, so drawing conclusions from this 1 incomplete data point isn’t meaningful.

To be clear, I’m not arguing that the S3 matchmaking system shouldn’t be changed (newer players being stomped isn’t great for the population), but I do take issue with the sense of entitlement so many players have (many posting on these forums) of advancing through the leagues well beyond their skill level, just for the sake of “advancing”. That being said, there are poor players at every division.

I agree, we need more data. We could now find 1000 randomly selected player and try it out or we have to refer the case to the developper who (I hope) have also the IP-adress of the player and can draw a conclusion about main and alt.

Furthermore, I agree that some players complain here that they do not progress although they are just not good enough.

I nail down bad matchmaking at the cases where player had a win streak (e.g. got from amber to ruby straight) then a loss streak. Once you are as good as your skill is, you should have a win/loss ratio of roughly 50%. Thats how the system was designed (one of Evan’s first posts here). We had multiple data-points in the forum where it was less than 50%. Of course, I cannot say how representative they are.

For season 3 (I think I said it before), I see 2 options:
1) make mmr-visible and rank according to mmr. Probably grant achievements for mmr-point improvement (e.g.).
2) abandon mmr and match players according their league position (extended league).

You cruised through to diamond, just one easy win by easy win by win. What have you achieved through it? Right, nothing! You had no competition. .

By no means was it easy, but at no point did I feel I was fighting a losing battle. Most games ended with both teams reaching at least 300 to 350 points, even when I was on the losing side, so they were by no means one sided cake walks.
The matchmaking has been pretty fair from my perspective, no solo queue vs premades, no crazy unbalanced teams (yes lots of Necros, but it was never like 5 of one class on one team and 5 of another class on another team).
To say I didn’t learn anything is also wrong, I learned plenty during season one that has made me a better player, season 2 I just applied what I had learned and again from my perspective a lot of other players have too.
In Ruby I found that the majority of players knew how to rotate, they knew when to leave a losing fight and as I said, when to switch classes to better improve the odd’s of winning, lower divisions I found everyone just wanted to stick with whatever they came into the match with.

More importantly, I haven’t rushed this season, I played an hour or 2 at a time and took breaks for days to do other things, I haven’t gotten caught in this “I must get to Legendary ASAP” mentality, I’ve had fun with it and not taken it too seriously.

While I guess not everyone will have had the same experience this season as myself it could just mean players need to try something else. Switch class, change up the builds to suit yourself, running meta doesnt work for everyone. If you get on a losing streak, stop playing for a while, let the divisions players balance out a little more and then try again, rushing early on at the start of the season is going to be when the games are most chaotic as everyone is thrown in at the start all together.

I dont know what else I can say, I have enjoyed this season, I feel like I could probably still push my way up a bit through Diamond, I doubt I can make it to Legendary but getting more experience from playing games against others who are at a higher level than me is only ever going to make me a better player.

Well nice for you I wish my season 2 was like that – but exact opposite – 90 % blow outs (which I can predict within a couple of mins of playing) hardly any competitive matches. I have tried my hardest improving myself trying different classes and builds , taking breaks all you have suggested but not worked out endless losing streaks which I expect now – the worst experience of my guild wars time in 10 years of playing gw1 and 2

I suppose there are winners and losers – I know which side of the coin I fall onto!

My experiences are different. If I just take the last 10 matches, in 5 of them the losing team had less than 300 points, in 2 less than 200. If I think back to the beginning of the season, there we had one match 500-0. Take the extreme case (500-0). Would you like to play on any of the two sides?

Yea that’s not a competition when your team dies so quickly that the other team goes and camps at your base and slaughters them every time they try to leave….that’s like the super funnyest and most pathetic thing to watch or partake in. And people complain about others going afk…. really can you blame them. I say give me a fair match or no match at all. (This season after a couple of really hysterical and frustrating days I chose no match at all since I realized something changed so dramatically between this season and previous ones that made every match have a predetermined outcome and no matter what you did there was no changing that outcome. If that’s the way its going to be just declare the wining team the winner and the losing team the loser and don’t make anyone waste their time on such ridiculousness.)

A potential explanation is that you were better with the first class. Your other experience with “inexperienced” teammates is something to look into deeper. I did not play the games and cannot say anything about their true skill. However, if you are right and they should not be in your division, the question will appear why they actually are.

I personally think most people who get such long lose streaks get them as a result of a defeated mental state… Why keep queueing if you are clearly mad/distracted off the game being busy with how much the system sucks.
Just take a few days break after a 3 lose streak, might maintain your sanity.
I remember how much I hated LoL when I was assigned to gold after some lucky evaluation games on my first season and losing like crazy till I fell to silver.
Anyway I don’t really believe the situation many here describe, I had experience where I dragged an alt out of the mentioned hell with just personal skill.
So what if your games are harder, accept the challenge and be the best you can, stop playing stupid meta sustained power builds and go full ham if needed, you got nothing to lose. When you are stuck in ruby feeling like you’re as good as any diamond you should have the mental capacity to climb the ladder. Either by tactics, or by communication or by simple steamrolling 1v2 fights on far which I often did to climb despite supposedly bad teams/comps.

oh if only – have regularly taken several days break for losing streaks come back and still the same – but my MMR is tanked so nothing changes – I do agree though I am demoralized as hell and this does play part

My advice is to get good at an alternate class and when you get on a losing streak, you can switch accounts (to an f2p account that you don’t care about ranking) on a different class for a fresh start. I did this this season: whenever I got 2 losses in a row, I’d switch accounts because I knew I was tilting just by losing 2 in a row.

I have alternate classes I play I tend to rotate between ele necro and guardian pending team composition. I am working my way through the seasons achievements as well so don’t really want another account -

I don’t care about PvE backpack stuff so I haven’t actually looked at the achievements, but wouldn’t you accomplish them faster by winning more (correct me if I’m wrong)? Trying to grind through the leagues for the achievements through loss after loss has got to be demoralizing. An alt f2p account could really help out in the win-department by preventing you from tilting on your main, but you do you.

I thought MMR was different on the two accounts
if I win on a ftp acc does that alter my MMR for the main account

That’s correct. The point of the f2p account is you can keep playing even when your “tilting” (i.e., losses having a negative effect on your attitude, outlook, and thus gameplay). Playing on an account where you don’t care about the outcome of your matches because you don’t have any achievement goals can act to “recharge your batteries” and allow you to perform better as a player. Then with your improved attitude you can go back on your main and start winning.

It’s a purely psychological approach, but your attitude going into the match is a major contributor to whether you win or lose. This is true for both team sports (e.g., lacrosse) and individual sports (e.g., wrestling).

Ruby is hell. Once I ranked up to it, I could never get a 3 game streak going. ALWAYS got stomped on the 3rd game after winning 2. And pretty much lost one for every game won.
At this point, the games I win, I would still win being AFK; and the games I lose, I would lose no matter how good I play . Really makes you question the matchmaking.

And I’ll say, I’ve pretty much stopped trying to win. I put the bare minimum effort to get credit for the game so my daily participator achievement updates (for the pvp backpack), and stop playing after 3 games. And its quite easily the WORST part of my day, everyday I log in. Looking back on the games I’ve played since hitting ruby, I feel that same level of apathy was shared by a lot of players on the teams I ended up on.
____

Also worth noting, I bought the core game at pre-release, but felt Heart of Thorns wasn’t worth its asking price. (I Play mostly Guardian and Necromancer)
I’ve felt that once you reach a certain point (in my case ruby, “ymmv”), the skill gap closes enough so that you’re faced with trying to beat elite specializations and not the players. A much greater number of 1v1s end up with you losing; which is really disheartening considering you can’t help but feel you’ve lost, not because of skill discrepancy, but because the game handicaps players who don’t pay for more powerful options.
TL;DR… game is pay2win after the (now removed) entry fee.

I understand that ANET wants to sell expansions, but this didn’t happen back in GW1 when Faction and Nightfall came out with 2 new classes each . Maybe If ANET wanted to sell more boxes, they should of put more content in them, or sold them at a reasonable price, instead of shortchanging everyone who owned the core game.

well I agree but I find even playing matches on my sons’ account where I don’t care too much I still lose streaks so not much help

Could you look up the score difference? Do you win 500-100 and lose 100-500?

I agree that there is a mismatch. You are in the comfortable position to decide whether you want to go for HoT or not. All those who own HoT have to wait for gw3 and keep in mind that there is a possibility that a similar situation as now can occur.

Side remark: If I remember the license agreement with arenanet correctly, they hold the option to introduce a monthly fee for the game.

I’m gonna throw some words into this cesspool.

The amount of wrongful legends (as well as diamond and ruby) is honestly no better than season one. Season one allowed good and bad players to climb to legend parallel from each other. At the same time but never facing each other. Like there were multiple divisions within a division for good and bad players. All season two did was create a line using players MMR and basically force players with lower MMR to wait behind players with higher MMR to reach legend before they could do so themselves. By the end of the season, every bad player and their mother should have been able to reach legend. The amount of terrible players I had the displeasure of seeing as a legend x10+ is disturbing. Matches are terribly lopsided 90% of the time because legend is the end of the line. All the garbage that waited their turn to get there are now forced into games with high MMR players. And the worst part of it is that they’re stuck there. They can’t be knocked back down into diamond or ruby… or sapphire like they should be.

… I still want tengu.

Ruby division made me not play PVP. I wonder how many others see it the same as me. Why can’t we have checkpoints at tiers up until Legend? It would be much more fun. Now it is just losing and losing and losing and never achieving the goal.

And for what? So some high-ego teenage boy can tell himself he is the best?

Well, GG.

That would only result in many people outright quitting. Good luck with your match queue times then, especially in higher divisions.

Well, no. It sounds like you’re saying people who pvped only for rewards/badges and who don’t actually care about improving and facing stronger opponents would quit the game mode.

That doesn’t sound like an issue to me.
