SoloQ Ranked Guide for All!
Really nice video!
We need to have it stickied and mandatory to watch before doing ranked (and probably unranked too).
Good job!
Solid tips. I echo the point about there being a more comprehensive tutorial like this actually in-game.
Thanks guys <3
Would love to see this stickied but I don’t think it will happen
I decided to make this because I’m actually spending more time giving ppl feedback and teaching them than actually pvp’ing..
Thanks for making this! It deserves to get a lot of views and I hope that it does.

Hope people will take a look at this guide before doing ranked, it might even improve the experience people have in ranked, if most people did just half of those things.
It won’t get stickied because the tone is dripping with vitriol.

If I were to make videos just because of that, I wouldn’t really bother to put so much energy in it though.
People who know me and the many ppl I thaught are grateful to me for trying to make the community better.
So no, no ‘salty’ intentions here, far from it.
I suggest to drop your ‘psychological expertise’ view on this
Actually, you do make a point which I missed: that line comes up twice at the beginning. You could have given that feedback much more constructively instead of villainizing the OP immediately and mentioning no specifics while asserting that the video was “dripping with vitriol”. It wasn’t, but I can understand that certain parts could have been phrased in a more friendly way. Most of it is totally neutral.
So, given how much effort goes into making videos like these, and the fact that this is meant to help others, why didn’t you think that the OP would have welcomed constructive feedback? Instead you attack someone after they put a lot of effort into trying to make something positive.

It is kinda sad, that there are people who prefer to flame for no ral reasons, while ignoring good tips to improve your soloq experience.

I agree some sentances could’ve be written differently, so people wouldn’t understand it wrong and out of concept
Please don’t bump a thread that’s not even 24 hours from last post. Also, it does reek seeing as how you pimp “Please send gold/t6 mats!!!!” so just let this thread take its natural course.
I could only take 1 minute of the video due to the kittene music but good intentions nonetheless.

People that would look at this guide with that kind of mindset I don’t want them to play pvp because they are not interested in getting better they are interested in finding perceived slights in everything. PVP would be a lot better in this game if people got less defensive and wanted to learn more. There is good info here regardless of what you want to read into his tone. I guess some jolly idiot post with useless info would be a-ok if it was written with the tone that everyone was a special snow flake to be treated with special care at all times like the finest china.

If you’ve seen OPs history then you’d know that they are an accomplished complainer. Entire threads of screenshots devoted to showing how matchmaking isn’t working. With that knowledge, it’s easy to pick up on OPs disdain for other players who are trying to gather experience. The tone is especially bothersome when OP suggests that it should be stickied so that new players can see it. Those are the exact people you don’t want seeing the video since the first minute just tells them that they are a burden to other players.
To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a post in a few months saying “People still aren’t experts. It’s a pity you didn’t sticky my guide! Here it is for anyone who missed it!”
I fight people, sometimes they kill me, sometimes I kill them. Fun is had by all. [/quote]
It really doesn’t matter if the OP was the scummiest person in the world or had some ulterior motives hidden behind this guide. What matters is that this guide is decent and it easly shows people how to play this game.

Matchmaking IS a mess and that’s a fact. You’re acting like I’m the only one who’s complaining about it, while even top teams are doing the same.
I want more fair matchmaking not only for me, but for everyone.
The current matchmaking is making ppl quit PvP, which I’m trying to prevent from happening.
You really have soemthing against me and I don’t mind, but don’t come here acting like a psychological expert and think you know me.
Let me do my psychological work in my RL and you do w/e you’re good at.
I mean, if you’re even looking at a person’s history just to complain about him.. Says enough about you aswel, really.
Now I’m gonna stop wasting time on you because you’re getting way off topic with this and might cause this thread to close down.
Enjoy your life with browsing through ppl histories and digging up
EDIT: how does it even make sense by saying I have disdain for ppl gathering experience with the screenshots about how bad matchmaking is..
How do they even gather experience while getting facestomped?
(Look Bad Matchmaking Thread from the DEV himself)
You’re saying we should leave the current matchmaking and let ppl ‘have a great experience’ getting facestomped 500-50? Then you’re even more bitter than I think you are.
PS: I didnt suggest it to be stickied, someone else did. I suggest you to read and act upon it instead of inventing stuff just to say things.
You sir, are pure bitter and old salt, telling 0 constructive/objective opinions.
(And you really suck at Psy. Screening of a person online, better bring back that Psy. License you prolly bought on Ebay)

Problem is not pve heroes being totally bad…problem is pve heroes being totally bad thinking they are good and doing nothing in order to get sort of decent. “I make my team lose because i’m terribad but instead of trying to get better i blame toxic community for telling me the truth” Seems legit
Flash news: in many other competitive games you can be reported for being noob and ruining other people’s matches…just saying, you should actually thank you just get some insults here
They should actually make people watch this guide before entering pvp for the first times…like a non-skippable cinematic

Thanks for your comment, Ark!
I wish this guide meant something however most people that play sologames and also read this forum, usually do all the stuff you said in your video….

I beg to differ, really :/
All depends what matchmaking you get ofcourse.
Experienced peeps like us take the guide for granted, as we do those things already, since it’s normal to do. But you would be surprised by the amount of people who don’t do 50% of the mentioned things
You’re right about ppl coming on forum alot, are mostly the experienced ones but soloQ’ing is really a disaster (matchmaking)
Just had a talk with guildies and we do miss the old matchmaking/LB felt so much more balanced. Though, the LB was a bit off but seemed more accurate

Expansion hype! #MetaShiftIncoming!
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thanks for putting this together! I’m still not going to play a ranked match, but I’ve been wondering about the strategy. (I’ve only played practice maps and I come to the forums so – PHPHHHHHHBBBTTT)

Nice video, however I disagree with some points there.
You’re saying people should switch when there is two or more of the same class/build. That’s not completely true. Having two shoutbows, two dd eles, one dd ele and one fresh air…etc. is not really a problem. Also having two mesmers against two or more necros is quite good if there is no or one thief on enemy team. Again, having two thievies it not always a problem. And in your first tip you’re saying people should play the class they’re good at, I agree. So telling them they should switch to something else is kinda contradicting. Not everyone can or want to multiclass.
I don’t like the ‘’1 close, 1 cross, rest mid’’ mentality. People should learn to adjust and create games that are not completely the same all the time. The game doesn’t force you to hold close and mid to win the game. There will be many situations when you will want to have a different strategy. Even your comp might force you to do so. If you have a squishy team on Legacy and will engage on mid, there is a quite high chance you’ll wipe eventually. However, going far with 2-3 players and taking the enemy players down will leave you with a better position on mid. It’s not black & white.
Saying someone should always stay close, eventually between close and mid, is not completely right either. It will make people think that there has to be one person sitting on close at all times. Players should keep an eye on it, but it should be situational, not like: ‘’Ok, you look after close the whole game.’’ It’s easier to do on Legacy and Kyhlo, but rest of the ranked maps might just lock players on that one point. It’s also useless to do so when enemy team has 5 players on mid/far. I’ve had this ele telling me that he has to camp close, because it would get decapped while we were losing a 4v5 fight at mid. They got mid and then runned over the ele on close. Also, if you’re not getting decapped, you might not want to bother and rather do more useful things somewhere else.
Also, saying not to stomp with 2 or more is wrong. There are many classes that has a single targed cc skill in their downstate and stomping with two is exactly what gives you the safe stomp. There are situations where you have to stomp in two and if you don’t, it’s a huge mistake. Obviously a thief trying to stomp when he’s getting focused is a bad idea, too.
I would also advise eles not to pre-cast their fgs and definitely not use it during a fight. The best time to use it is at exactly the moment you need the movement buff. By leaving a fgs on the ground and then using it during a fight, you might as well waste 180 sec cd.
Also, taking out a shoutbow instead of zerkers first might be beneficial, too.
Nope, zerker classes can stand on a point, sometimes it is needed and crucial to win a game.
Again, everything is situational. Sometimes you will need to do the things you said you shouldn’t. I would avoid words never/always and rather use usually/at most times, because players should keep an open mind and try to come up with different solutions. If someone tells them ‘’but you never…’, they won’t even think about it.
I personally liked the vid.
Nevertheless, I have to agree with mbh.8301. The tone can be interpreted as “unfriendly” and a little off-putting, considering the target audience. (Even if that wasn’t your intention)
Just a few examples of text that could have been worded differently:
“Don’t punish others who are playing to win by your lack of knowledge”
“…having your team punished for something that could have been avoided.”
“…it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see where you should go or can help”
“… You have the name Support Guards (aka shoutguards) for a reason, you schmucks!”

The last sentence was actually meant as a joke :< I should not make jokes ever again Q_Q
But ye, I got the point
Terrorsquad, firstly thankyou for the vid…I’m trying to learn pvp in the unranked Q and its been pretty rough.
I was playing an AH guardian recently (clerics amulet and 3 shouts), and i was yelled at for not sitting on a point all game, which in the end discouraged me from being support and I went a Medit hammer dps lol. From your guide though, it sounds like he was in the wrong maybe? Or is there a circumstance where Ah guard should sit on a point?
Excellent tutorial. Thank you for making it.

First of all, thanks for the kind words!
A Support Guardian should NEVER sit on a point useless. You’re using shouts and soldier rune, which, is built for your team, not for yourself.
The best position in general for a Support Guardian is being where the teamfights are at to, obviously, support your team with your shouts/cleanses/might/rez and safestomps.
Cheers
Okay, it seemed silly to have all that support and waste it on myself.. Thanks much for the confirmation =)

I agree with all of this. I hate absolutes. I’ve had people tell me I need to do this or not do that but I used my own judgement and it ended up helping a lot more than doing their suggestion. The other team isn’t going to always play a certain way so you need to be able to adjust.
The video is a very good "guide’ to ranked. Don’t look at them as hard and fast rules and you’ll be fine. There is no such thing as an absolute in pvp. It’s just too fluid to have any hard and fast rules. But there are definitely a few that people need to be smashed over the head about.
1. Don’t test a new build or profession in ranked.
2. Don’t double, triple, or team cap uncontested points. Move your sorry kitten to where you’re needed.
3. Don’t be a road warrior when the team is losing.
4. Learn to rotate.
5. Don’t queue if you’re turtle heading or will be otherwise indisposed. Go heave that havanna and then queue after you’ve gotten that spring back in your step.
I remember when there was an actual solo q where solo players could face other solo players for rated matches.
Climbed fairly high in that format with just casual play, top 50…. the new format of premade teams fighting solo q players is not right.

Exactly. If there’s one thing that ticks me off, it’s the matchmaking procedures.
Hi,
Necro’ing a quite old thread but I have a question that I can’t work out the “correct” answer to and this thread seems to be where it should be asked.
If you have been downed when should you be a “try hard” and try to revive yourself (with Bandage) and when should you just let yourself die and rez? Is it actually quicker to bleed out (even if you aren’t being hit by anything) and rez than it is to just die?
Now I know there are circumstances when you should “try hard” – when there is a chance of a team mate reviving you or when you can kill whoever downed you (yes, I do main Necro, no I am not running power so my down state maybe better than most but it isn’t a 100-0 that teef jobby!). However, I am still not certain of when to die and when to bandage.
Maybe time for another one of your excellent and very helpful vids, Terror?
Charmin ultra soft is more durable than some of the folks responding to this thread.
If you found this video offensive, I honestly cannot fathom how you cope with PvP in general.
There are some great tips in here and I didn’t feel you were the least bit offensive. Great music choices too.
You did a good thing OP.

Hey Rav, thanks for your nice comment!
To answer your question as best as I can:
It’s totally situational, as in teamfights or 1v1, if the point was yours or theirs.
Above average players will let you to bleed out, as u mentioned, offpoint (since Necro’s do not have a teleport in downed state).
Most above average players will let you bleed out offpoint (granted the point is their) and leave BUT will always keep an eye on you if you try to rez. If you feel the opponents are good or organized, I suggest to bleed out and not try to self-rez.
Chances are the one that downed you will come back to see if you’re not self-rezzing.
If we’re talking about a teamfight, I would strongly suggest to use your downed skills (granted your Thief aint nearby for Shadow refuge) and try to pressure ppl who are trying to stomp you. But again, when facing good/organized players, they actuallymight just cleave you to death instead of trying to stomp (poison and auto attacks). Ppl who will try to rez you might take the risk being cleaved upon aswel, resulting in low health or eventually being downed too.
It’s up to you if you recon the opponent downed you, will come back or not to check on u. Keep an eye out for him when downed and check mini-map. If he gets involved into a fight where he needs to kite or help, that might be your ticket to a self-rez.
Hopefully this was informational enough
Cheers

Thank you very kindly, sir.
The “kittenbag-kind” of behavior was actually meant as something funny, as some ppl here didnt notice. I learned my lessons and will not use sarcasm/jokes into my guides again, just to keep everyone happy

Nice tips. I wish I had those when I started pvping
I don’t play ranked since I just play for achievements. In unranked I always alert on chat team to where I go. Unfortunatelly, most of players don’t say what they intend to do.
I agree that although those tips are quite obvious, many players don’t follow them.

Haha, I don’t think many people will let a necro bleed out if it’s power, the downstate damage is ridiculous. Also, you have to keep track of enemy players and if there is a chance someone is coming to help the necro. Bleeding out is not always the best choice you can make.
In general, it’s best not to self ress unless you’re sure you will get up, which is very rarely.
