Thief: Buffs
3. Instant Weapon Swap. A thief has one pool of initiative for both weapon sets. Why shouldn’t we be able to use it as we wish? The shortbow is used mainly for utility instead of real damage. Giving the ability to swap weapons at will gives us more access to utility without sacrificing the ability to deal damage. Yes, I know it would be unique… but so is the initiative system. On-swap sigils already have a 9-second cooldown, so they won’t be affected. Just add a 9-second cooldown to the Quick Pocket trait, and all is good.
^I was feeling you up til this point.
And on-swap sigils are affected. Rather than needing two of the same sigil for maximum potential, you would only need one. With the normal 10second WS CD it’s Swap to weapon with sigil (it activates) —> wait 10 seconds to swap weapons again and then an additional 10 seconds to swap back to the weapon with the sigil that has the 9second CD. That’s 20 seconds until you can use your sigil again…That’s why people often use two of the same sigil; one on each weapon.
Either way, thief is a strong class if you know how to play them, and a royal pain to deal with solo. That weapon swap change would make them a demigod, not put them in line with other classes.

And on-swap sigils are affected.
Good catch! My logic isn’t always flawless in the middle of the night. That’s why I play games instead of code them at those hours :-P
Either way, that should be a simple fix. If my logic isn’t failing me now (not enough sleep), making each weapon set’s sigils’ cooldowns dependent on the other weapon set’s sigils’ cooldowns should do the trick. There are other methods, nothing too complex.
That weapon swap change would make them a demigod
Hey, that sounds pretty good to me! :-D
Apart from some things that are mechanical bugs and apply to multiple professions that should be looked at, your suggestions are completely unbalanced.
Free no-cooldown weapon swap? Because letting a Thief freely swap around would be totally balanced… Giving them free access to teleports or easy stealth for all weapons is ridiculous.
More health? No way. Thief has stealth, blind, teleports and evades out of the whazoo. They stay alive just fine as full glasscannons because they just straight up don’t get hit (enough).
And Thieves have some of the best condition removal for such a minimal investment. Shadow’s Embrace is overpowered for an adept trait, i am highly surprised this isn’t being moved up to compete for a GM spot with Shadow Rejuv. in the upcomming changes. Because it should.
A free destealth? And let me guess, this would also not trigger revealed right? The one drawback of wanting to attack while stealthed, namely getting revealed so you can’t immediately restealth, shouldnt be bypassed.
And if you find yourself still in Stealth for a few seconds which is stopping you from capping a point, you should’ve planned better.
No to more HP, more HP=less active defense(they will nerf something) and we don’t want to get hit much anyway, instant weapon swap is debatable our playstyle is defined by one set due to initiative the other usually for disengage/utility.
The Dhuumfire thread
No weapon swap for a class that has no cooldowns on their weapons? Yeah, I don’t think that would be a good idea.
10. To encourage more active play, give the thief the ability to backstab while unstealthed if the thief is behind the opponent.

This.
I agree with you that bugs (Steal, Scorpion Wire, etc.) are in desperate need of being fixed, as they represent core elements of the thief gameplay (especially Steal). I wholeheartedly disagree that thief requires any more buffs at this point. You already get to spam attacks from stealth while I’ve popped an invulnerability and remain invisible until you land one. There’s something patently wrong with seeing:
BlockBlockBlockBlo-BlockBlock-Bl-Blo-Bl-BlockBlock7000
When thieves get some reasonable drawbacks that force them to play tactically rather than spamming their abilities until they are low on initiative, going into stealth, and coming back for round two at their leisure… then you can talk about buffs.
LOL
THIEF BUFFS
“Please, let me have even more ways to completely mitigate damage, alpha without consequence, do even more burst, and make enemy counterplay COMPLETELY unviable (even though there isn’t even any whatsoever for stealth)”
Oh god thief tears are so delicious. Keep whining that the most broken-by-design class keeps getting hammered because it will continue to do so until you can’t win every 1v1 against anything but a CC bot.
Yes, the single most desired profession for any team since day 1 needs more buffs for sure..
No to more HP, more HP=less active defense(they will nerf something)
Ah, don’t say that. This is a positivity thread. No nerfing allowed, haha! Only buffs.
So more HP and no nerfs. The only reason a thief would be less active in defense is if he chose to be. At least, that’s what’s on the buff list :-)
10. To encourage more active play, give the thief the ability to backstab while unstealthed if the thief is behind the opponent.
loool
Hey, I’m just giving the people what they want… less stealth. I’m an equal opportunity thief ;-)
So come on, people. List your buff ideas for the Thief! It’s fun! :-D

If you can’t beat any thief in a fight, it is probably you.
The same goes for any profession.
Shadowstep needs to be fixed like you described, but also needs to be nerfed so you can’t port up ledges with it.
Scorpion wire needs to be more reliable, but so does any other pull skill on any other class.
Most of your other ideas were just ridiculous.
There’s something patently wrong with seeing:
BlockBlockBlockBlo-BlockBlock-Bl-Blo-Bl-BlockBlock7000
Yeah there is something patently wrong with seeing that and what’s wrong is that you are just standing there not doing anything while they swing that many times at you.
Shadowstep needs to be fixed like you described, but also needs to be nerfed so you can’t port up ledges with it.
In that case any teleport would have to be nerfed this way.
I would like to propose a buff to thieves with adding the ‘Revealed’ boon on stealth to every thief skill that applies stealth.
I also think all the Shadow Steps need a buff. I think they should have a chance to fall through the map floor when they make contact with the intended surface. If this RNG procs in their favour ‘reliably’, they should be awarded with the boon of immobilize for 5 seconds. This buff would encourage true Risk/reward gameplay. Using your shadowsteps at the risk of falling out of the map is a double edged sword by design.
I am willing to hash out my balance ideas in a thread if you’d like.
With all of the nerf threads going around, I though I may as well give some thoughts on how to buff thieves. You may agree with some more than others. Feel free to add, but remember, this is about buffs, not nerfs! :-)
1. Fix the problems with shadowstepping. Give some tolerance to the path from Point A to Point B. I understand the need to limit it from pure teleporting, but there are many places that I can walk to without jumping, but the shadowstep mechanism doesn’t work properly. Also, a visual cue (like a red “X”) over the return skills’ icons would be great if our current position will not allow us to return to where we actually began. It gets frustrating to teleport directly into a small rock 10 feet away from where I was at a moment ago, when I was expecting to be 150 feet away. I’m looking at you, Shadow Trap!
2. Fix the problems Scorpion Wire missing consistently or not pulling the target as it should. It’s meant to pull, not to simply knock down.
On-swap sigils would need just a slight modification of when their cooldowns run in order for it to work as usual. Just add a 10-second cooldown to the Quick Pockets trait, and all is good.
4. Improve the stolen ranger item. As it stands, the Healing Seed isn’t very useful against rangers. Make the tree itself able to block ranged attacks. If you want to add even more usefulness to it, add some kind of “sweet sap” to the tree to draw the pets to it for a few seconds.
5a. Increase the base health pool for thieves to make them more survivable. And/or…
5b. Add the ability to cleanse a condition to every weapon skill that uses 6 or more initiative.6. Make minor traits optional. Yes, you know it already… Last Refuge.
7. Change the active portion of Assassin’s Signet. Currently, it is hardly worth activating in most situations. Perhaps change it to make the next 5 attacks be critical hits… or all attacks in the next 3 seconds will be critical hits.
8. Enhance the active portion of Signet of Shadows. In addition to its blind, add the ability to instantly removed Revealed. You could also buff it further by making it put the thief into stealth for a base 3 seconds.
9. Give the thief the ability to destealth immediately without having to attack.
10. To encourage more active play, give the thief the ability to backstab while unstealthed if the thief is behind the opponent.
looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool, thief atm needs nothing but more nerfs….it’s brokenly overpowered and needs nothing but nerfs….anet permaban this kid from forums please

I feel that the warrior is left out, eviscerate should have baseline damage of 5000 on zerker amu, endure pain untraited needs to be 8 seconds…surely a warrior is more resilient then a ranger wich already spams protection and evades more then any (except thief on evade) class, also to counter stealth abit I want the f1 lb skill radius to be tripled from warrior…with all the damage buffs other classes have gotten and the warrior’s damage nerfs I propose that healing signet get’s buffed by 30% (minimum) again…also why can engi shielblock every 20 sec without traited and warri 24 sec traited…it seems only fair that if an engi can shieldblock every 20 sec that the master of weapons (warrior) can do so every 10 seconds….and buff warrior stabilty

no what’s wrong is this: the blocker blocks the stealthed player, aka feels hits on impact but thief doesn’t get revealed. This beyond overpowered and needs to be reverted….you stealth YOU need to watch/time your attacks properly…it’s not like thief doesn’t already have one of the if not the highest burst in game and mobility and self condi cleanse next to ranger

Absolutely. Any skills that behaves similar should of course have the same treatment. Ele lightning flash, mesmer blink and what have you.

Not only that, but also things like Phase retreat, Infiltrator’s Strike, Steal, Judge’s Intervention…You cannot allow one teleport to port on ledges, while you prevent the others from doing so. Would I enjoy this nerf? No.
While I don’t agree with the OP, calling for him to be banned is ridiculous. Dark steel, you are one of the worst, most inflammatory and offensive posters on this forum. If anything they should observe your behavior and constant browbeating on this forum. You constantly insult anyone who does not agree with you and it kills discussion.

cool, but tbh…the one who one who started this entire thread….kinda insulted all sane players and is in fact extremely provocative and toxic and is the last thing pvp community needs….so yea they deserve what they get….for every sane person would totally disagree on any thief buff. not to mention his proposals are insane in every way…what comes around goes around…what you ask for is….well you get it…get it?….wordplay. btw did you read his proposals…he killed discussion himself right there…he wants the most insanely broknly overpowered class to be lifted to absolute godtier….what do you expect….remove the roots of this toxic, aka these players and see other players react more decent/normal etc etc

I don’t think anyone started crying. You stated that any sane person would behave the way as you do. Well, imo sane person would read the suggestion, think about them and then decide if they agree or not, eventually expressing their opinion without kicking and screaming. On the other hand, an unstable/insane person would start raging just because someone thinks differently.

no what’s wrong is this: the blocker blocks the stealthed player, aka feels hits on impact but thief doesn’t get revealed. This beyond overpowered and needs to be reverted….you stealth YOU need to watch/time your attacks properly…it’s not like thief doesn’t already have one of the if not the highest burst in game and mobility and self condi cleanse next to ranger
1.) Stealth is magic by lore it doesn’t have to fit into your views of reality.
2.) Best condi cleanse? ROFL. What are you smoking and can I have some of that? Necromancer easily beats thief and ranger on condi cleanse with consume conditions, well of power and dagger 4, even more so if you run a MM build. Shoutbow is very viable in the condi cleanse department too.
3.) Good thieves do watch and time their attacks because good players will turn and cleave their kitten when they see that block message come up instead of standing there QQing about it.

first of all I didn’t say THE absolute best…second of all paired with the stealth options…it pretty much is the best (regarding the condi cleanse) for ROFL it is 500% true what I stated..…shoutbow can be nerfed into oblivioun for all I care, stealth is magic…ok so you’re saying it’s a good proposal tho….stealth right now is actually in a position where it needs more counterplay or nerf…probably even both…ps good thieves and honest in their opinions…would probably agree with me more then the proposals…tho it would make life even more easy for them. See as a warrior main I can actually admit that shoutbow for example needs nerfs nerfs and some more nerfs…not on healing signet or anything….but on the actuall shouts and maybe even wh skills…for nerfing healing signet would render non shoutbow warriors even more useless….tho that’s another discussion… It would be GREAT if players from other classes kinda could do the same, instead of asking for even more buffs and pretend that the thief is in a bad position now….unless this stops…I won’t stop. Le simple (no I’m not French)

The proposals of the OP are nuts. The only way a thief needs to be buffed is if stealth is nerfed because they are paper. As someone said, roughly 2k armor with 14k health, and that is what I run with and I don’t even have Shadow’s Embrace because I don’t run the PS meta and instead run a CS 2/6/0/0/6 build. Still there is a balance announcement coming out tomorrow and we will see what that is all about. A lot of the spike damage issues are more to do with the sigils Air/Fire which I have said before that I really wish they would remove those because of how their existence forces you to use them as a zerker build (which face it, as thief you run zerker or you’re dead weight).
The thing that makes me stand in defense of stealth and mobility being nerfed is that it is all a thief has for defense. Take away that and they are a glasscannon with no defenses and may as well just be pushed out of the game because noone will play them after that. People complain about a thief having mobility and damage so nicely bundled up in a package however they don’t have anything else. People say the class is insanely overpowered because they excel in those areas while ignoring the fact they are horribly underpowered to the point of nonexistent in all other areas.
After playing a thief for so long I jumped on to play a warrior for the first time without even setting up any kind of metabuild and beyond the opening quest hadn’t played much on the class. It felt like I could roll my face on the keyboard and get kills because of how much damage I could mitigate. For fun I made a tanky well build on a necromancer to just bunker points and compared to thief it feels like I am immortal. With 3k+ armor and near 30k hp I just take multiple backstabs and RF from rangers and just keep going as I laugh maniacally. On thief one RF can pretty much eat my health pool like cake at a kid’s birthday party. Hell, wanna know why thieves generally stealth stomp or SS-stomp? Because we can literally be downed by downed state 1 from any class before the stomp animation finishes. That’s how paper the thief is.

And this is why I respond the way I do… zerker warrior and even necros die near instant….I played 1000’s of matches and seen 1000’s…yes the one seen are in hotjoin….or in the 1v1 channels….zerker thieves can burst zerker wars or necros to death….near insta both players being very experienced players I assure you…..im not talking celestial or tank builds. bersi wars btw…are already known as free kills

For me atm 2 classes/specs ruin the game.
A: Cele shoutbow
B: Zerker thief
There maybe some more things going on…but tbh it can never be perfect and imo the rest is pretty fine, tho zerker thief and cele shoutbow ruin the fun for all non meta but also alot fully blown meta builds/classes
No to more HP, more HP=less active defense(they will nerf something) and we don’t want to get hit much anyway, instant weapon swap is debatable our playstyle is defined by one set due to initiative the other usually for disengage/utility.
lol and this kid is supposed to be taken seriously….I seen many posts of him and I know many people take him seriously…tho look at this reply…..just given away his true face….instant weapon swap is debatable….lewl go away….far away….slly kid…yes permaban these…toxic to the fullest don’t be mad at me for my reactions…remove these toxics….instant weaponswap debatable…lol rrrriiight. I honestly believe and this includes hardcore thief players that 90% of gw2 community would either cry or laugh hardcore about this proposal….remove the toxics if you want more normal reactions…you can’t expect intelligent people to react in a normal way when this is being pushed in forums…seriously…stop holding each other’s hands and kissing each other’s you know what due to populistic behaviour…for there is absolutely no valid reason at all for this proposal or backing it up. They are the toxic’s! not me…I would rather call myself the cure for these children. And hellseth and his friends would laugh even more loudly at this proposal….seriously guys…it’s not me…tho I know I can be blunt….but look at them…. and added to that they want certain sigils/runes to be adjusted accordingly…..remove these toxic’s permaban them from topics….they get to keep playing ofc but tech IP permaban from forums pls (no joke)

OlliX.1705:Shadowstep needs to be fixed like you described, but also needs to be nerfed so you can’t port up ledges with it.
In that case any teleport would have to be nerfed this way.
No.
When I said shadowstep the first time I was actually speaking of the mechanic, and this meant to include the skills you mentioned.
The only teleports I was intending to be exempt from this was ports that teleport you back to a spot where you previously pre-casted. This means skills like mesmer portal, necro spectral walk, thief shadow return and similar skills.
However, I think it’s worth mentioning that the skills you specifically mentioned are different than the ones I mentioned since they don’t involve ground target but rely on having enemies targeted. Since these skills as a result fuction as gap closers instead of a way to escape I don’t think it’s entirely unfair to give them more leaway.

How does Phase retreat/IS relies on having a target?
7. Change the ACTIVE portion of Assassin’s Signet. Currently, it is hardly worth activating in most situations. Perhaps change it to make the next 5 attacks be critical hits… or all attacks in the next 3 seconds will be critical hits. this is insulting
Wow, if that’s insulting, I’d hate to think what my other possible buff ideas are! :-D
But I am curious, what would you consider a valid change to the active portion of Assassin’s Signet? :-)
I mean: 9. Give the thief the ability to destealth immediately without having to attack. this….please go away….someone got rekted hardcore in pvp…and made a madlist in bed crying himself to sleep after posting it
Interesting. I didn’t think people liked thieves in stealth. Oh well, live and learn, live and learn. Though I don’t really know what my crying in bed issues have to do with destealthing… so sad :’-(

Yes, the single most desired profession for any team since day 1 needs more buffs for sure..
Unexpected +1 abilities
Unexpected node backcaps.
You only need 1 thief for this role because he’s inferior in everything else. Certain buffs are needed but honestly, it’s mechanical changes rather than “buffs”.
I think the class is fine where it’s at.
Rank: Top 250 since Season 2
#5 best gerdien in wurld

How does Phase retreat/IS relies on having a target?
How does infliltrator’s strike not rely on having a target.

It does, Idk why I wrote that. I should stop stduying.
Anyways, doesn’t change the fact Phase retreat works differently and it would be the only teleport without target that could port up on ledges.
