I’ve been patient with gw2, but after 4 years in and STILL with the same problems….no longer. PvP back then, though flawed, still had potential IMO. The “e-sports” consensus has RUINED this game, has ruined the fun, and frankly I’m just disappointed. I think we all need to wake up and smell the coffee. PvP is a COMPLETE joke.

You have the saaaame stale conquest mode for 4 years now. The leaderboards were replaced with a WORSE league system, which is basically a glorified reward track, NOT a competition. Solo Q was removed which ruined the pvp experience for people. HoT killed the game balance. Thanks to the leagues, matchmaking is also ruined for people. I can go on and on….I just want to know….what happened?

I look back pvp and I can sum it in one word………..squandered.

If Anet reverts some of the things that they have implemented in the last year or so, then we might have a shot. Leaderboards were actually a legitimate way to gauge a person’s skill level (compared to leagues, anyways) and leagues are just a grind with no presitge.

This game has hands down the worst pvp system I’ve seen and Im taking swtor into account. Wvw is brilliant, I enjoy raids, pve is fun. pvp is garbage.

Not at this point sPvP is just too far gone. ANet has already committed to their vision of PvP so the rest of the player base will have to suffer or look elsewhere. That being said absolutely anything is possible no matter how ever remotely unlikely it is.

I LITERALLY have one foot in the grave when it comes to pvp. If this next patch doesn’t address these problems, then I’m done with pvp for good. It’s just not fun anymore.

I’m tired, tired, TIRED of conquest for 4 freakin’ straight years. It just doesn’t bring people in. I mean look at the ESL lol. Pathetic!

I mean come on. Stronghold pretty much crashed and burned. There’s just no other ways to have fun in this mode. I was really patient, maybe too much so. But hey, we all have limits right?

e-sports promotion has NOTHING to do with the sorry state of GW2 PvP.

What doomed GW2 PvP was:

  • Brain-dead OP HoT specs
  • Progression based ranking system
  • Inability or unwillingness to make necessary changes to either of those

I don’t think GW2 PvP will get better soon, if at all. It seems that HoT specs will stay at their current power levels, which means PvP will rarely be fun. The awful ranked system which produces lop-sided matches and longer waits certainly doesn’t help.

The other problem is that the community flat out does not attack uncompetitive elements outright. You’ve got people more than happy to dole out 50$ to stomp F2P players citing “it is how it is”, and “they have to make money somehow”.

No wonder nobody cares.

THIS is critical. When the community does not attack uncompetitive and unfair elements, the game suffers! Elements such as premade teams being allowed in ranked and exploiting the matchmaking become normal and we slowly accept it. We slowly accept it because NOTHING CHANGES.

One of the best trolling threads ever here. Those people who want soloQ in Ranked games and want Premades not to be allowed in Ranked games are the biggest trolls ever and it is you people because of whom the PvP is getting ruined.

When you enter solo in a Ranked game, no matter how good you are, you can not control other four randoms. Competitive gameplay is a team game and not a “Solo I dont care about others” fest!

Of course the PvP developers need to improve a few things like taking the PvE loot system out of equation, putting soloQ and PvE reward track in Unranked, bringing 3v3 arena system or 10v10 Rated battleground with Flag carrying play other than node capture etc. But it is the SoloQ and PvE reward track that first needs to be put off from Ranked system and the pip system changed with Ranking title tree etc which will bring the competitive game to justice.

People who want a solo fest can keep enjoying Unranked and stop trolling others by asking for removal of premades from Ranked.

The Guild Wars were stopped in part by King Adelburn, if memory serves, more than 250 years ago. GW2 wasn’t sold as a team game. It was about heroes.

The Destiny’s edge 2.0 is like the henchies of old with less control.

HoT attempted to shift GW2 to “group content” and in my view.. it has been more or less a disaster.

It’s not the solo queue promoters ( like myself ) who are trolling. It’s the “team” people who min/max a group and use it to exploit anyone not similarly teamed.

Then you seriously need to adjust your expectations. This game doesn’t really have more viable modes in a 5v5 setting other than conquest because everyone is a pseudo-healer. When they decided to abandon the holy trinity in mmos they killed pvp before it ever had a chance to start. If you look back in gw1 their “conquest” mode was the most despised mode in pvp, when it became the main pvp mode in gw2 I thought it was a joke, but after you understand their game philosophy almost any other pvp game mode is bound to fail which sucks (no defined roles= you can casually be a hybrid of everything).

Did the game waste it’s potential? Yes. Will a more balanced pvp bring people back? Just the few that still lurk the forums, yeah, but back to 2012 levels with old school gw1 players and its potential? Never again. I’m personally confused what the pvp team does in general because they don’t do balance, that’s relegated to the “balance team” we haven’t had any new maps since skyhammer and got a failed gamemode which is still in ranked queue. Yeah, it’s extremely confusing knowing there is a “balance team” watching over all 3 game modes when their bias has only been towards pvp (lets just split balance across 3 game modes cough cough). Well that’s sort of understandable. For the most part PvE hasn’t exactly been that all that difficult, and before Raids optimal builds wasn’t really much of a consideration. WvW is a zerg fest so builds not really that important either (well maybe roamers, but they’ll just use whatever pvp builds work), so for a long time only PvP has really needed build consideration.
Of course that’s not an excuse (I’m all for separating the numbers).

You can form a team in BOTH unranked and ranked, there’s nothing stopping you from doing so. We who Solo Q are just saying separate the queues again because mixed queues between solo players and teams are unfair as a whole. There’s literally NOWHERE for Solo players to play in pvp.

they only thing we can do to fix this mess in pvp is simple. everyone must stop going into the heart of the mists and wvw. simple bc they require the numbers and if they report 0 in both. only then will they want to know what happened and how to fix it. but thats never going to happen. we are at a impasse. the community will not boycott pvp and WvW and Anet will do nothing bc they believe nothing is wrong.

Aside from 0 build diversity for most classes, I think they have drastically reduced the skill cap to cater off new players. However, this in turn has shrugged most vets off.

I’m no pro for Anet to care about me but I know a lot of players who will return to PvP once they have toned down the powercreep, condi spam, and AoE cleave.

You’re not alone. Those that felt that way have already left and the ones that remain are fewer.

All I know is you will not see me for Season 4. I’ll play unranked for some gold but not much. Like I said, I’m literally one foot out the door for pvp. If this patch doesn’t bring massive changes, I’m leaving pvp for good. WvW is looking better. Sure it has problems, but they’re getting a lot of changes lately.

We must also keep in mind that a couple of years ago we had quality players that made the soloQ something very funny and entertaining. Nowadays the 50% of the pvp comunity are scrubs and unbrain players. 25% are inexperienced and the other 25% are the pro players. If u want to reach legend quick u need to pre-made with good players but is not imposible to reach playing soloQ. I reached legendary in all seasons playing mostly soloQ or duoQ bu. Season 1 was funny for me despite the bunker meta. Season 2 was made for crybabes and this season 3 is also “very” funny to play. We dont have a kittening condition meta in this season. We have a rotation meta where good players that knows to rotate can outrotate the enemy and bad ppl slacks in one node. Thats why ppl cry too much.

Also 2 years ago we had a non-rewarded ranked syteam with no loot, no legendary backpacks, no pips where players could make rankeds and was something exclusive for good & experienced players. In those days we was not expecting Anet to reward us, we was happy with the simple ranked systeam. Now Anets forces players to play in a rewarded ranked league systeam where we have good players, pro players, inexp players, pve players and scrubs all togheter in one with a poor MM trying to make the imposible. Why u force pve players to play pvp. If u want to make the gw2 e-sport let the pve and the wvw comunity far pls dont mix it pls. Let the pve players play pve and let us play pvp.

The only real pvp remaining in gw2 are the duels and the 5v5 scrims in guild arenas. Stronghold is a joke made for pvers, and Conquest still funny when both teams knows to play.

Being honest this game is one of few mmorpg that has balanced gear/level pvp. The perfect set up for skill based play. The game is a work of art and after playing this game I cannot play other mmorpg reserving time only for strict esports. But that being said. The pvp team is not understanding the issues players are having with their game. This is causing many people to rage quit.

But it gets worse. The people who quit Guildwars 2 cannot simply go back to their lesser mmorpg’s. This leads to a new issue. People once they quit Guildwars 2 may stop playing mmorpg pvp. I would like to point out that Guildwars 2 was made better than every game but failed at being great. This not only ruins Guildwars 2 player base but the player base of any other game released by this company given this is probably the most appealing mmorpg they have released outside of Blade and Soul.

Anyway to answer the title specifically statistics never lie. This game has been getting more artistic but mechanically/balance wise worse and worse along with increasing clutter with each tacky add on. Will the game ever get better? No. There is little reason to believe this game will get any better. It is more likely than not this game will continue to get worse prompting the release of another game by this particular company.

If the day ever comes, I will be interested to see Guildwars 3 but if the balance team has shown us anything, I doubt they will have the funding but I jest…

Personally i played many games and gw2 has the best balanced skill based play. Conquest mode was someting amazing and new. I dont ask Anet to reset and put the things back as before. HoT was something good for the pvp but Anet needs to find a balance between core specs and specialization specs. Also u have to build a big big big wall between pve, wvw and pvp. Is a very serious mistake to try to mix this comunitys. As i said before let pve playes play pvp dont force them to play pvp and THIS IS FOR PVE PLAYERS if u are not pvp players dont come searching a kittening legendary backpack u have yours in fractals.

Mixing the comunitys u make the pve players frustrate cause they can win a single match and u make the pvp comunity be furious with u. How can u solve this problem? Make 3 league modes. Easy, medium and heavy modes with the same divisions. Put more pips in each division of easy and medium mode than heavy and good & pro players will join heavy league, average players will join medium and pvers searching for achievments will join easy mode.

As i said before the only real pvp now in gw2 are the duels and the 5v5 scrims in guild arenas.

What I’m most disappointed in is the HoT elite specs. They are WAY too strong. HoT builds really take the skill out of this game. The PvP thanks to HoT builds has LITERALLY fallen into the precipice. They just encourage spamming, brain-dead gameplay and are much more forgiving. Every HoT build has some kind of “I win” button.

Compare core builds with HoT builds. Core builds are WEAK and cooldowns are HIGHER. HoT builds are STRONG and cooldowns are LOWER.

Making PvP “Great Again” is something that will require a lot of changes to the way things currently work.

-Conquest needs new maps, and some tweaks to the old ones.

-There needs to be a new mode that is more than just point capture w/ secondary objectives

-Stronghold needs to be revamped significantly. New objectives, new maps, and changes to the old, especially when it comes to healing escorts.

-Profession Balance, which is a huge deal, needs to be re-evaluated regarding both core and E-Specs.

-Maybe a new PvP exclusive Reward Track, much like WvW’s Gift of Battle track. League tickets and Shards of Glory should also have another use to purchase things there also.

Lastly, this is just personal opinion:

The Metagame needs to be adjusted/shaken up more regularly. I dont agree with 3 months waiting for sweeping changes. I’d rather see at least a small amount of tweaks at the end of every month or two months.

Player feedback should be considered carefully to avoid heavy-handed buffs/nerfs when not warranted, but the Balancing Team also need to make their stances known on certain matters when it comes to how they handle professions.

In regard to shaking things up, a more involved method would be something like this:


Maybe they can even do something like add a “Testing” mode to be enabled at the end of every PVP season, where Runes/Amulets they want to remove or re-add can be evaluated by the players in a custom game modes with/without them included as build options, and be voted on to get feedback about handling them better, instead of just tossing away runes and amulets and adding substitutes.

They could even make count as a special sort of ranked play (or its own category ladder of “Suspect/Tester Play”) where players who reach certain ranks/points/MMR/ect can acquire points to vote for/against changes. It could give some power to the actual players of the current meta to decide how they want to see things change in that area, I’d think, and give PvPers something to do off season while at least making it feel like their opinions matter.

Its a bit of a shoddy idea, and it likely will have some issues, but its something…

I think it’s been touched on but just to add, GW’s is a game aimed at casuals. For me that’s the core issue with PvP and I think it will be the issue that eventually kills PvP off completely (altho you could argue that maybe it’s at that stage already). With casuals that want to PvE, PvE will be the skill balance focus. Combined with that raids have now introduced a level of creep that sets the floor-level of power-creep in PvP. Without major chances to those the PvP bar won’t be moving.

Also, I saw a number of people mentioned going to WvW as it ‘looks like it’s improving’. It’s not, WvW is dying, not as quickly as PvP maybe but it is heavily impacted by the mickey mouse changes to class balance as well.

Anyway, goodluck with the conversation and the hours of frustration!

With casuals that want to PvE, PvE will be the skill balance focus. Combined with that raids have now introduced a level of creep that sets the floor-level of power-creep in PvP. Without major chances to those the PvP bar won’t be moving.

Also, I saw a number of people mentioned going to WvW as it ‘looks like it’s improving’. It’s not, WvW is dying, not as quickly as PvP maybe but it is heavily impacted by the mickey mouse changes to class balance as well.

I agree with this. The specialisation patch that went live a little more than a year ago already took a huge toll on my enjoyment of the game. Too many traits became baseline, too many others got merged. The power creep was immense. On top of that, the specialisation patch didn’t even address the issues it was supposed to fix (removal of redundant or unused traits).

When Heart of Thorns hit I tried for a month to find an enjoyable build for my main profession but I quickly came to the conclusion that everything I found fun so far was now obsolete. My in game activity plummeted, and nowadays I only log in to chat with the single friend that still actively plays GW2.

I also agree that WvW is probably in a worse shape than PvP. Small scale and roaming (for the sake of the argument lets say 5v5 and less) is plagued by the same broken builds you find in PvP. If you add in the broken gear choices (Perplexity, Durability, etc.), the food buffs, the guild buffs and every other piece of power creep you’re looking at an inextricable mess.

I hardly play anymore. I got my legendary back and felt my interest for the game evaporate. Seems that my goal for the back piece was the only thing keeping me interested.

The more I read this thread, the better WvW looks to me. Even then, a lot of people are saying THAT’S broken as well. Maybe less so, but at least it’s open combat and not fighting in a freakin’ circle.

In WvW you’re less limited in what you can do. You can zerg, roam, siege, use strategy, you have options. You can get around runes/specs/food.

WvW is much less scripted then sPvP giving more control to the players like you and I. Plus all of the builds that was deleted from sPvP can be played in WvW aswell.

What killed PvP was the balance. Everything else is just a manifestation of the unbalance.

The PvP team realize that, and they have been trying to balance the mode on their own, by manipulating the only things they can (sigils, amulets, runes).

The balance team led by Karl basically just give a giant finger to the PvP team and decide that PvE balance is more important than PvP balance.

That happens for 4 years, and here we are. I don’t have hope that they will put the balance team under PvP. So I don’t have hope in PvP either. Overwatch is where I spend my time and money now.

Gray out the HP for future condition damage
Already quit PvP. Just log in here and there to troll.

I’ll say the detrimental “there’s no balance”,but what else can you say.

Take the classes as they evolved through the years and see for your self.
Take the Mesmer for instance.
That class started out with limited access to stealth.
Now it has come to the point where it can stealth as much as a Thief.
This is the epitome of broken balance.
It’s the same with all the classes more or less.

PvP is a race on who will play the most op build,a build that allows a player to go for max DPS output while achieving insane amounts of sustain.
Balance means that there has to be some give and take.
You spec for defence,you will deal sub par dps,you spec for dps,you will be squishy.
Here the situation is-lets spam all out invulnerabilities and evades and blocks while we unload our dps burst,and see who will die first-.
These are not PvP classes.
These are the PvE classes of a PvE MMORPG,that has good balance for a PvE game,and no balance worth mentioning with regards to PvP.

That the team focuses on adding and removing stats,when the bulk of the issues with class balance is 99% related to 3 years of bloating everything out of proportion,tells you all you need to know.

I truly miss the days before HoT, like riiiight before it’s launch. The balance team reworked all the trait lines for every single class and it feel MUCH better than it is now. Much more stable and some more builds were viable.

Comes the Elite spec and suddenly you NEED to use them or you’ll get outperformed by the sheer amount of bullkitten the classes can throw at you. Conditions on almost every single skills, even by clearing them all you’re always going to struggle staying alive because of the amount of conditions certain skills apply in one hit. It’s crazy how the second HoT dropped, the balance shifted dramatically and now everything feels like kitten.

Well there are two things to consider and take into account, at least future wise.

1. With the recent patch we are seeing a few abilities become separated between a pvp version and a pve version. In my eyes, I think this is a step in the right direction. Gw1 did this and I hope gw2 will also continue this.

2. A lot of people are saying the bigger root cause is because of the elite spec’s. Now, Anet has said before that new elite spec’s will be introduced to the classes as well as another weapon. When this happens, it will give all of the current classes a bit more diversely of play and will most likely change the meta. Depending on what that looks like, we can better judge if pvp will ever improve or get worst.

Anet may be, be making alot of mistakes now, but it’s best to make mistakes and learn from them so you know how to step forward, change, and improve. I highly recommend everyone to continue to give them constructive criticism that makes sense. And hopefully they will listen.
