New Soldier Class: Zaishen

The Warrior uses brute force and cold tactics, the Guardian changes force for magic and tactics for boons; The Zaishen is the soldier that sees war as an art.
His combat style is more refined and flows on par with the battle, he is not as tough as a guardian or as healthy as a warrior, he the balance of the two. He knows where and when to strike, his weapons always strike true. Whereas Thief’s use poisons and crude weapons to undermine his enemies, the Zaishen uses the enemies against himself striking at vital points to diminish their enemies, humble them at the feet of the masters of war.
A Zaishen Master can with but a prick of his blade or with a strike with his swords pummel can knock an enemy unconscious or render him paralyzed.
The Zaishen style is very complex and he changes it to suit the flow of battle similar to the Elementalist, he moves into different combat stances that changes how he handles his weapon, this of course means he would not change weapons in the middle of battle. The Zaishen adjust their combat style with their weapon, not the weapon for the combat, as they are masters of the weapon, and do not need to change.
In ancient times, being an order blessed by Balthazar they were gifted with fire and battle fervor, through ancient sigils and signets they channel these past blessings and call on it to inspire themselves and allies in combat. These Sigils are the opposite of virtues of the guardian they provide a passive bonus to all allies and can be activated to focus it on the Zaishen.
The Zaishen modifies his combat stances to maximize damages with the weapon in hand, showing an elegant combat style in which they do not hide and faces enemies in combat with swift decisive and almost surgical strikes.
They have combats stances as their class mechanic.
Sigils and Signets are their signature utilities.
They are martial masters and use ALL the weapons use from ancient times in Tyria (Guild Wars 1) with an unmatched mastery. They have high armor but little to raise it higher like Warriors and Guardians, and medium hp between the Guardians and Warriors.
In awakening of the Elder Dragons, saw to the destruction of their sacred Temple and the Battle Isle, the Zaishen where almost eliminated and seemingly erased from Tyrian history. Many of the old teaching of the Zaishen where lost in this event but despite of this the basics of their teaching still spread and were assimilated as time passed to all races. Even thought their origin of belief might have change, their fire and battle fervor for Life endure like a Phoenix that rises from the ashes, yet never forgetting their past that was lost and shown in their exotic armors the nostalgia for those ancient times. (Guild Wars 1 Armor Sets)
For the Zaishen the challenge of the Defeat of the Elder Dragons will be the greatest battle and victory would be the greatest honor they would achieve in any lifetime.

Kinda long post but a good read. It be nice if Arena net dig into their past lore and resurrect this central part of GW1 as a new class.

Seeing as there’s 3 adventurers 3 scholars a new soldier to finish the trios would be a logical next step.

Hoping arena net takes something from this post and make some awesome.

Thanx! I was aiming for that, it seem just right since as it be a very Exclusive Class that would represent in essence what Guild Wars 1 was all about, adding a nostalgic yet new feel to the awesome new combat system. It would take advantage of the interesting combat system of the elementalist dance of elements but with a more martial arts feel.

I added some picture to better show what the Zaishen could look like from the already creative concept art of the game. Especially the picture of Shiro which would basically be a perfect example of what a Zaishen would be, without the evilness.

Even though it doesn’t apply as much since it’s basically a summoned weapon with its own skills like the Summoned Weapons of an Elementalis, Trahearne is closets example of what I mean besides the Elementalist, when he gets his big sword from the Pale Mother Tree.

Stances allow the Zaishen to change their combat style with their current weapon, because of this they dont need to change weapons in combat they change their stance. This is just as an Elementalist switches attunement and not their weapon. It would be like applying different martial art style to the same weapon to adjust to the needs in combat.

Good idea, and would be forseeable in an expansion or something along those lines. Just make sure the maximum character capacity would be increased to 9 following this addition or make it available through the Black Lion’s company(if Anet would increase the character capacity with the unlock of the profession.) It’s major and worth paying for in my opinion.

Sounds like a really good well-thought idea, and seems really fun too, since I’ve always liked martial-arts based classes in MMOs. And the fact that it can in some way tribute Guild Wars 1 is cool, since the Zaishen Order is an intercontinental guild in the original guild wars. But If I may be so bold do add, that the name Zaishen even though it has to do with Guild Wars lore, was actually a tittle and in my opinion too specific for a class, compared to the names of the classes in GW2. Something like Swordmaster, Warlord, Fencer, and etc. would fit more the GW2 style.

That would obviously be awesome , but to make a class that actually got that kind of flow and beauty on its moves is no easy task.

Therefore i wonder if devs would actually care to go over this much work , they could just add a class with much less complexity and players would also be happy anyway.

So you got my support for the great idea , but im skeptical about it ever hitting the game.

To Uzzwick: LoL funny. That was a wtf moment for me when I first saw that in April Fools Commando Class.

To Deltanium: That be awesome.

To Abdiel: I think the name is a very crucial thing in this type of class as it will describe the mechanics and the name Zaishen describes them well as they were known for the mastery in GW1 of all the classes and all that had to do with battles, but your suggestion is a good one too.

To Nox: True on both counts, it be a master piece of a Class if they made it and the difficulty to achieve such flowing beauty. One thing I have learn with Arena Net is that they like to surprise us and don’t mind the detail or complexity to do it. Not to get exited but also I’m not underestimating them.

I like the concept but I feel it overlaps with the warrior a tad too much, it could definitely be refined into its own niche role though.

Maybe instead of sigils they get disciplines which give passive buffs and when activated boost a specific aspect of the class for the duration with a drawback at the end of the duration.

My gawd, do I WANT a longsword like that in the game. So simple and beautiful and reeks of finesse unlike the current over the top flamboyant weapons >.<

This class sound amazing fun, would play as a main as I thought my Ranger would be similar in nature, unfortunately it’s not quite what I intended as the fluid fighter class.

Zaishen itself wasn’t really a title since there was a Zaishen title track that would let you be a Zaishen [something]. Zaishen was mostly used to indicate you were a member of that guild.

Best thing about the Zaishen to use for a class is that we know very little about them, we basically know they were a guild that worshiped Balthazar and strive for betterment in combat. They achieved both of these through organized combat and training in their temples. They were also one of the few with direct access to the mist and the Tomb of Primeval Kings.

So 250 years later how could the Zaishen have evolved? Well here is what I think (would love to see the answer of other people). Upon the rise of Zhaitan and Orr we all know the Battle Isle disappeared from the map. The Zaishen Order escaped to the mist before their own destruction arrived.

So with their link out of the mist was severed they continued their operations within the mist and kept on surviving there. Present day with the Asuran opening more portals to the mist we find the Zaishen and they bring with them the results of their 250 year training and combat refinement withing the battleground of the mist. Remember in the mist there’s constant combat as the souls of great heroes and whole battlefields can be found there, and the Zaishen survived there for 250 years.

Now this doesn’t mean every Zaishen fights the same way, same as all the other professions the Zaishen can specialize themselves the same way you have hammer warriors and staff guardians.

TLDR; The Zaishen made their own combat art by surviving in the mist for 250 years until they were found again by us.

I do agree that I really, really miss my Dervish and his scythe avatar of the Gods fighting style (SPEACIALY THE SCYTHE AND AVATARS)! I’m sure also that the other classes would be welcome, but like you said before, they probably where absorbed by the other current classes. (Example: Mesmer have an ability that actually accelerates combat).
All I know is that if we do get the next Soldier Class it be awesome worthy of Arena Net Reputation, remember this is a suggestion and as such Developers can use parts of it or all of it. I wound mind if it has everything of those classes, if they call it Dervish, Zaishen or even Kensai (Kensai is ?? master swordsman, was an honorary title given to a warrior of legendary skill in swordsmanship) as long as we get the next Soldier Class , my suggestion came from the new FEEL the game offers and the new cool mechanics, it makes you wonders of the possibilities. The name itself I pick it because of the open Lore it has, as also the open specs it could posses because of it.
But I feel where your coming from man, the concept itself I made it with that in mind.

Thanks, well I’m not keeping my hopes up but also do think it might be possible, they did pull of the one man army Mesmer, have you seen dose guys in action with a clone for every class? The first time I saw that I was in shock! Then I PvP with them and learn they where powerful but not invincible. Possibly even if it is a soldier class I’m sure they could make it a Leather, cloth or very low HP if it uses armor, to balance the DMG output or make it more of a combo condition damage etc. All I know is Arena Net should not be underestimated when making unique classes, learn that enough times with the resilient Guardians, Necromancers, Mesmers and the crafty Engineers. Love the uniqueness of those crazy classes!

I like the concept of a soldier that utilises stances like an elementalist.
I would love to see them have the weapon options of Shortbow, Sword, Spear, Trident, Greatsword and Dagger offhand. With an option to use 1h sword with no offhand that gives a full skill bar and doubles the stats of the mainhand (not dmg)
Guardian can drop light combo fields and apply burning.
Warrior can drop fire combo fields and apply bleeding.
Zaishen could use Dark combo fields and apply chill?

First off, good read, nice suggestion.

I’d like the name to be a bit more neutral and not so heavily Japan-oriented. How about “Wanderer”, “Stalwart” or “Liegeman”?

Then, I really like the concept. I think it sounds like a mix of Warrior and Thief.

Not to be nitpicky but you would want to make it as different as possible from other soldier classes. I think Shortbow would be better as ranged as none of the other soldiers have it. 2 stances plus weapon swap would work well. I think stances should include Water stance and Earth stance, water being focused around fluid movements and including effects like chill, darkness and water fields. Earth would signify strength, controls like knockdown, stun and cripple, blast finishers and such.

As for the stance thing i was thinking more like the following

Sword / dagger

Fencers stance (defensive skill set )- has a chance to grant stability every X amount of seconds for X seconds .

Open Stance ( Offensive skill set )- Every X amount of seconds your next attack has a chance to Bleed foe for X seconds

and each weapon set would have a different offensive and defensive stance with an advantage or chance to grant one

I was thinking that this could bring the so acclaim and ask Bare Hand Combat Skills, I think this should be different per race and slightly depending on class for effects.

Example:

• Charr use claw attacks and bite
• Asura can do the Yoda jumping attacks
• Humans can do the martial arts thing
• Norn can do wrestling move stuff
• Sylvary can do vine whip, poison, seed attack and all sorts of plant crazy stuff.

The other weapon this class can bring is the Battle Staff (Scythe, Halberd, Whip, etc.)
I think this would be fun and if they ever bring a disarm status, we be ready for it!

IMHO, there’s about 2 years of work fixing existing class problems before we ask ANet to create another class. Ah, you doubt me? Play an engineer.

We have to remember this things take time to develop and designed a purpose for it. The Devs are reading but we have to keep bringing the idea to life that’s why we post, so everyone can pitch in with their ideas, on how to go about with this.

Thank you for your support. Who knows we might see some of this in the future, as there are still the Dervish and other classes style of fighting missing from this new mix of classes we have now.

Heck, I would not mind if they added a bit of the Dervish to the new Soldier class put with stances or something similar like an infuse elements much like the shamans infuse them selves but instead of elements more of divine/dragon essence or some cool eye candy sort visual FX.

If people keep adding and combining their awesome ideas we could see the best ideas but into the New Soldier Class…even if its not name the same way, but I have a feeling it could be name Knight or something in that line with the other classes.

F1 – Judgement stance The current weapon(s) offers an array of offensive attacks

F2 – Protector stance Defensive and Support abilities.

F3 – Manipulation stance Various monster control and other CC abilities

With cool-down on switch, just like the Elementalist.
Blade dancer has also been proposed. This could be a mix of both.

It does make sense, and I would love to fight bare-handed.

The bare hand combat would be a very nice touch to ALL Races and Professions and knowing Arena Net it be something in the detail lines of Race+Profession mix, making it interesting unique experience and fun choice different depending on the mention above.

They could add a special glove./claw/orb for it as a weapon socket. Depending on Professions and Race it be close combat or a very flashy display of range combat. It could finally bring good CC to all profession. After all in a bare hand combakittens all about controlling a fight, be it in self defense or offence.

Thought this idea of the New Soldier Profession main focus could be all about CC!

I was hoping they would bring back Dervish as a heavy. The problem is that Dervish are fighters who use the power of their gods for combat. Therefore only only humans can be dervish and norn already use their gods. Leaving charr who don’t have gods, asura who have a different higher power, and sylvari “the dream” out of the picture…

I like the idea of a Dragoon/ Heavy Armor Halberd user. No weird eastern themed things like Samurai or anything like that, that’s why NCSoft has Lineage and those other grinders.

Since the Zaishen are dedicated by lives to Balthazar, shouldn’t they be heavily influenced by him in terms of their skills? Tons of fire and what not.

Two of the images provided aren’t Zaishen or affiliated with them, not sure if you were implying that or not. One is Shiro Tagachi of the Imperial Guard in Cantha. The other is a Kurzick in Cantha as well. If you just meant to use those as armour example then ignore this part.

It is an interesting Idea none the less, but the problem I run into with this class is this:
1) The God’s aren’t helping the humans anymore and the Zaishen are 100% loyal and dedicated to Balthazar.
2) The Great temple of Balthazar were the Zaishen are from is located on the Battle Islands. With Bubbles the dragon, we really don’t know what has happened to this island chain.

On your 2 points
1) The Gods might not be helping the humans but that’s not stopping them from worshiping them and the idea of the zaishen is for a flexible and versatile combat master (note not arms master that’s the warrior) not directly linked to balthazar.
2) The battle isle are gone that’s much is known from the movement of the world article long ago. Regardless of this the zaishen can very well be alive still since they had ample access to the mist and could have escaped there facing imminent destruction and survived there the last 250 years along side innumerable ghost of warriors that fall on the mist taking from them and perfecting their style. (I say this because all PvP takes place in the mist).

I was hoping they would bring back Dervish as a heavy. The problem is that Dervish are fighters who use the power of their gods for combat. Therefore only only humans can be dervish and norn already use their gods. Leaving charr who don’t have gods, asura who have a different higher power, and sylvari “the dream” out of the picture…

Hmmm, actually I would love to see the Dervish again as a Heavy Class! They could implement this into them and mix it up so its lore wise with the new races.

Hmmm, actually I would love to see the Dervish again as a Heavy Class! They could implement this into them and mix it up so its lore wise with the new races.

The GW1 dervish in a way is very similar to yhe zaishen idea. A dervish fighting style could change dramatically based on the avatar you chose. I even made a support dervish for pvp in fort aspenwood map. The zaishen idea lets you switch your fighting style to adjust to the flow of battle like a dervish would change avatar to fit the mission you were running.

Maybe the F skills should offer different fighting styles based on the one your in, for example:
F1 Balancing stance – Enter a stance that offers moderate damage and attack speed with no drawbacks
F2 Attack stance – Increases power based on current level, slows attack speeds but increases damage
F3 Defensive stance – Increases toughness based on current level, attacks deal less damage but with a chance to block
F4 Quickening stance – Increase attack speed, lowers armor rating. Endurance regenerates slower

Elite: Masters stance: Enter the masters stance for 15 seconds gaining all benefits from normal stances with none of the drawbacks
