For the last time: Stopping your enemy from getting where they want to go (i.e. ganking) DOES ADVANCE MAP GOALS. Not if everyone does it all the time, but if a few people do so, it lets the balance of the population achieve those objectives easier.
In other words: people are presenting a false dichotomy here, roaming gank squads are not mutually exclusive with accomplishing strategic goals.
In the big scheme of things, roaming gank squads don’t advance map goals that much at all. However a 5-man that decides to take camps/dolyaks as their goal can be effective.
This is highly debatable, and one we could have ad nauseum…

We take supply camps and farm people coming to flip them regularly. Most gank squads do this I believe. We look for others doing it as its a great way to find a good fight. This both gains a paltry amount of points and splits enemy forces on different objectives.
See, I can help my realm!

I disagree.
If you have a siege team of 20 people attacking a keep (usually supported by the PUGs that come around so its safe to say 20+) thats defended by only 5-10 people, a 5 man team can prevent reinforcements from supporting that defense by choke-holding a common enemy “traffic” spot.
They can even hold of for long period at a time. I’ve survived against zergs of 10-15 against 5 for about 10-20min (depending on tactical advantage of the area around u an also enemy skill). That 10-20 minutes of 15 invaders not actually defending, not actually doing anything, but trying to kill us. Thats actually doing alot of good.
15 invaders are now not contributing and are useless in the fight against the invaders sieging down ur keep.
I run a kill-squad in my guild FTF. Our main objective is to cause Chaos. Break enemy coordination. Instill fear, and disorganization.
You may eventually get the better of us, but thats only after you’ve aquired an enormously high advantage in players over us, and by that time we’ve done our job distracting well enough to provide an opportunity of less resistance for the siege teams to have to deal with.
Thats the point of a kill-squad.

I saw this whole scenario play out in DAOC. It starts with everyone playing the game how its “supposed” to be played. But eventually people get tired of beating on doors all day and see the success of (or maybe get rolled by) set groups and they start wanting a piece of the action too.
Then we have a gank group mecca with 5v5 all about. And no one assjams and the wilsoning is kept to a minimum.

See, if you played DaOC or even this game with the vision of people vs. doors then chances are high you are playing it wrong. Keeps, doors, and Lords are only the means to the end. In fact, they are a necessity by which can be achieved by both zerg and small tactical teams.
Tactics which do mean and nasty things like breaking the other teams moral, blocking access to jump puzzles, supplies, or just all around mayhem.

I disagree just from my own personal experience. Do you really see groups of 5-10 pubbies that are really effective in cutting off reinforcements that may outnumber them in size by a lot? I honestly don’t, and we’re on the same server. I see coordinated guilds do it very well, but definitely not pick up groups. Though I agree repeating the same thing about gank squads all the time is old hat, it’s part of the trash talking fun, as long as it doesn’t get out of hand :P

Cant tell if im being flamed… or agree’d with…
But
The 5 man kill-squads and those who choose to run them do serve a purpose. But only if they have a second team or siege team that their supporting and coordinating with.
Its always been a combined effort. A siege team would get overrun and pushed back with supreme defense. And a kill squad always gets to the point where they’re in over their head.
Yes a kill-squad will not rack up your servers total points. Some of us aren’t concerned with that, we want blood :P Epic battles, rivalries even amongst other guilds (i think its healthy and fun) but the smart kill-squads coordinate. They offer support in their own bloody way throwing up swords and grabbing attention. If you see a kill-squad that u recognize, chances are, theres something more important going on somewhere… i just doubt they’d let you get there.
As far as boasting or trying to act big. That wasnt my intention. I only meant to offer another view point in which to look upon kill-squads with.
Im Ehmry Bay btw.

I’m not flaming or agreeing, or disagreeing with what you’re trying to explain. I’m saying you don’t really have to explain it, since most of us already understand the activity, it’s not a far out idea that only a select few understand, most people on the thread are simply stating, who cares?
Sometimes, I prefer to run those groups with pickups, since they’re not totally into themselves so they get going right away and don’t rage so harshly whenever they fail, they just jump right back into it or call it day. I don’t have all day to stand around waiting for an elaborate plan that takes longer to explain then to execute. There are some solid guild groups who just go out and make a mess and run at a pace I can appreciate, and who don’t over think it.

Lol but really now.
Are you saying that people dont care for kill-squads or that explaining their purpose here is redundant and basically stating the obvious?
As far as ur last part, somtimes you can have good players who can handle themselves in a 5man group, meet em randomly running around WvW. But its trying to strive from being the 5 people playing 5 different classes doing their thing, fighting like they’re fighting for tags on mobs, then the 5 people who work around each other, coordinating dps, calling targets, a fighting like a single unit.
Yes people do over think it, i’ve had that problem. Practice makes perfect tho and eventually becomes second nature.

Hi, Jornosh here. Doubt anyone knows that Norn Banner Warrior from YB that’s here and there…meh, who cares. I walk yaks, I throw banners, and a tear is shed everytime blue or red take one of the camps I upgrade myself…
(Need a moment.)
Ok, sadness aside, just want to say that on this little discussion between “Gank Squads” versus “Map Objectives”, let me say that under MOST circumstances, making a small group to dedicate themselves to a point on the map, or a few points for killing enemies is perfectly acceptable. Two reasons for this: Supply Runners, and Killing Yaks. There is a third reason of “Stealthing towers/keeps” but at this tier that really doesn’t happen…I hope >.>
Mag thieves laying waste to Yaks, although not a ganking example, is the perfect example of how even a few persons attacking certain points could influence the map. When however, you spend too many resources ganking at skritt…like really in the corner…you might be wasting your time. For the most part though, gank squads from what I seen typically do not waste time attacking locations on the map of heavy travel for supply runs and other things.

Wow I just read all these posts bashing us. Please allow me to explain some things.
Firstly I just want to thank [SM] for watching my video. Much appreciated.
To the people saying “roamers” or “kill squads” don’t do anything for our server… You are wrong.. we are killing our enemy, delaying re-inforcements, taking supply camps, defending supply camps, murdering every yak we see, wiping zergs attacking our keeps/towers, destroying enemy artillery, and frustrating our enemies. Please explain to me why I have to sit in a 40 man zerg outside a tower beating on a door for 20 minutes to be “contributing” to my server.
Another note, Bunzy is a kitten stirrer, therefore he is going to stir some kitten on the forums, his posts do not reflect how all of us would like to be perceived. But we love him anyhow.
Also, there was a comment about how we are not the first to run around with eles and theives, as if this is a known OP group comp. Uhhhhh.. trust me, I HATE this group comp. It causes me and Bunzy to run around like idiots trying to stay alive while our thieves stealth around and slowly pick off enemies. I’m pretty sure there are much better group comps out there lol. We beg the thieves to get on their other classes.
Lastly I would like to once again thank [SM] for all the badges they provided us with tonight. I’m getting very close to having all my exotics! I always get a smile of joy across my face when I see little rainbows streaking at me. Must of been your C-team tonight.. Huh boys?

I run a spec built for keep breaking and zerg breaking and some support. Half of my job is doing damage, taking camps, etc, but the build is made to break a zerg off the gates or smash them on their siege, etc.
If I were going to run around and just fight all of the time, I would not use this build, at all.
Making a build tailored to ganking or small encounters and killing people who are built NOT to do so is not boast worthy, really.
That said, play how you want. I don’t think anyone really cares that much. Don’t expect to be lauded for your ability though.
There is something to be said for the psychological warfare of a gank squad. Farm kill someone enough, they stop enjoying WvW and leave. That is one less person on the enemy team. Magnify that to zerg busting groups constantly harassing/wiping a zerg and it splinters. The less fun the enemy is having, the fewer there will be to contend with.

Don’t fool yourself. They don’t leave, give me a break. They go around. They stop using that avenue of approach. You are being really effective at cutting off reinforcements from that particular area, but all it is really doing is making it harder for the reinforcements to get there, buying time. Again, valuable. But make no mistake, you are not making anyone log off, that’s just silly. And you really aren’t stopping anyone from getting there, you are just making it more difficult. If a pug decides that he doesn’t want to keep going there, then success! One less enemy in the area. But they aren’t going away, they just head somewhere else. You are diverting troops.
Well coordinated gank squads are valuable, and they do contribute to the overall goal of the server when it comes to WvW objectives and stratagies.
The tone of the arguement has shifted in the past couple of pages. It started by claims of random roaming, only caring about kills, and who gives a kitten about server points. And yeah, I’m a kitten and you suck, come get me. That deservidely was mocked. Now the past page or so is explaining gank squads not only going after kills, but also hitting camps, killing dolyaks, cutting off reinforcement routes, raising crossed swords. Now THESE gank squads are doing it right, and contributing to the metagame of WvW. No arguement from anyone there about that usefulness.
So maybe we can move on to a different subject as it looks like we all agree that random gank squads are next to useless, while well coordinated groups that are actually achieving server goals as well as racking up kills, well, we all like those guys.
Sooo, how about that next reset? Right smack dab in a holiday event, and probably the biggest one of the year at that. PvE players’ dream. Snowballs, candycane nodes, costumes, jumping puzzles. Drastically lowered WvW population. Is it a writeoff week? Who has the biggest group of WvW lifers? Tune in this weekend!

Ya, it’s great. Anet kind of screwed us out of the real experience with the server rotations, but at least we get a little within each week.
By the way, there seems to be the misconception among you zergers that all we do is have really easy fights that aren’t even remotely challenging. Sure if we 1v1ed you that would be very easy, but we don’t. It’s like how the threat of sending 3:1 odds was so funny, because that’s standard fare. What you guys lack in gear, levels and/or skill, you more than make up for with numbers.
Also, we aren’t running around avoiding the other roamers. Every server has skilled players roaming around, and they generally make for amazing fights. We like fighting each other because that’s a lot more fun for us than just killing some clueless zerger that got lost. I don’t even stomp half the 1v1s I do anymore, and never a boosted char unless they’re part of a group.

Not that I promote taking advantage of a glitched area. But there is absolutely no reason, at all, that you should feel entitled to be able to kill somebody directly outside their spawn. Just wait at the supply camp. Those dudes aren’t doing anything productive there.
I’ve seen every team do this anyway, so pot kettle etc
Hiding in the invuln areas is dumb, but its even dumber to chase someone back there. You can’t do anything from those spots except wait anyway. Might as well just be part of the spawn area, except its at the bottom of the hill instead of top.
Speaking of low behavior, I’ve seen a lot of AltF4ers getting the most out of it that they can before that little practice is put to bed here tomorrow. And notice its always the roamers that do it.
Lol sorry to tell you , you had 6 commanders I had the intel from on of your guys btw anyhow eBay has guilds that are stepping up because last night I saw guild organized group. Anyhow lets make it clear ladies maguuma GOON power house is no more. GOON is not as big any more. They do have skilled players still around. So you guys are not going against a server that out numbers you or anything. How about this eBay we been at it for so long lets take out the next server that goes against us and then we go to battle. You Guy do have some good guilds out there I will give you that I enjoy a challenge from time to time. I enjoy you guys sending out your top guilds to eBay last night I was having fun at west keep area but then we got called back :/

Serious question, are you really too lazy to add “ma” to the end to prevent people from thinking you’re using “Maguu” as a term of endearment?
Love,

Well, I’m glad you love us people who talk about kittens all day. Love you too.
Yeah where is fight club? I check the usual spots but haven’t found it in a few days. Bums me out (and yes im fully aware that it does nothing to benefit my server in any way, shape, or form, but damn it! I enjoy it.) Also to those guys in FTF, you are a fun group to battle, and I hope to see you around more =D
I enjoy you guys sending out your top guilds to eBay last night I was having fun at west keep area but then we got called back :/
Unfortunately, this is a pipe dream. Ebay already has 30+ people committed to Mag BL tomorrow for the reset, and not a single one to Yaks yet.
