Commander Tag Changes Feedback [merged]
I wonder if they will ever be able to do anything at all that will not lead to people complaining like mad.
Heck I am almost certain that even if it was added and given for free people would still find something to complain about. The price is steep, but it is in no way impossible to get.
300g is rather easy to get nowadays, especially when we no longer have repair costs, which basically means that the only thing that drains money in WvW is upgrades (since you can get siege with badges). The problem is that there need to be gold sinks, and I know that I personally prefer a gold sink like this than something that would be “forced” upon my for simply playing (such as repair costs).
The fact that one person, somewhere in the world of billions of people, always manages to have a complaint, is not a good reason to shrug off the concerns of the vast majority. There are plenty of changes they have made that have been met with general approval. Culling fix, siege timers, party boon priority, finally getting around to account-bound wxp, kicking offline party members, even greying out dead name tags. Some people complained about those things as well, but the majority liked them.
However, in this case, the overwhelming majority think this change is utterly ridiculous. Therefore, it is an extremely weak argument to go “well, people always complain”.
Yeah, there need to be gold sinks. But why does the one, single improvement to WvW have to be behind one of the biggest gold sinks in the game? Now you’ll say that commander tags aren’t just for WvW, but PvE as well. Okay. Except, the commander upgrade is the only real improvement coming to WvW for many many months. PvE gets many improvements every 2 weeks that aren’t locked behind gold sinks. Where is the equivalent gold-sink in PvP? Where is the 300g entrance fee for Dry Top? Why is it that 10% of PvE improvements are locked in gold sinks, while 100% of WvW ones are?
How can you not see why WvW, which has been crying out for something, anything, for months, how can you not see why they’d be angry at the one scrap they get thrown, has one of the highest price tags in the game?
For months we are told “oh be quiet, we’re working on stuff, it’ll be ready when it’s ready”, then when it finally comes it has a 300g price tag. You do understand why that feels like “kitten You” ? Because I’m 99% sure that after the feature patch, there’ll be nothing else coming WvW’s way for at least another 6 months. This is it. Golem mastery and 300g for a different coloured tag. Well WOOP DEE DOO
At least use your real account DVon.

Commander tags are also used outside of WvW.
Who cares?
You don’t NEED a commander tag to play WvW. Heck you don’t even need a commander tag to command. Sure it helps, but it is in no way required.
If he is a good leader it would be rather easy for him to get people to sponsor the tag (it is happening quite often already).
Coming back from a long time away from the game or just starting it up is not really a position to command from anyway for that matter. A good commander needs experience and good understanding of the CURRENT WvW, not WvW from 1 year ago.
ikn that you dont need tag to play..i play the game from day
that was not my question ether way
but after all our scream for changes anet drop us this….and btw also pvers use that tag..so that change is not realy aiming the wvwvw players cose wvwvw players DONT HAVE GOLD TO SPEND ON THAT TAG

They could make it so you lost 1g every time you took any action and I’m pretty sure lordkrall would defend it.
Like I said in another thread, 100g for an account bound, colour-selectable tag or it sucks.
If your commander wants to be distinguished by a special color, their tag can be supported by their guild. In the early days of WvW, the would-be Commanders were funded by small donations from their communities.
The point of people wanting different colors for tags was easier coordination, not personal preference for a “special color”…
If you can’t switch colors on the fly, then this whole “feature” is pointless. No commander in their right mind is going to drop 1200g on extra colors. Especially when nearly all the gold you make in WvW goes right back into food, siege, and upgrades.
This is utterly ridiculous if they leave it as-is.

now is also the time to choose defense for your point of view.
its either: you dont need a commander tag for commanding, or: they gave us what we wanted. one excludes the other in the way anet implemented it.
and in a way, unfortunately, you are right. you dont need commander tag for commanding. and wvw will again be left out of improvement for commander options. everything will stay the same, so basically, they didnt do anything. except of the fact that they now can say they did…
Even having to purchase the initial basic blue tag for 300g and being able to “upgrade” to include other optional colours for (say) 25-50g a pop would be better than this. I can understand an acc bound tag costing more than a char bound one but requiring a further 300g per colour, especially since the main game mode that wants this and will benefit from this has such pathetic rewards compared to other areas of the game, is pathetically delusional. An individual commander will take a long time to grind up the 300g; even if a guild clubbed together it would either cost a lot of gold per member or require a very large guild, and even then, there is no sign of guild-only tags.
Anet, please reconsider the cost of additional colours!
An Officer and a Gentlewoman
Seriously Anet, if your gonna make things account bound at least have the decency of not tripling the price. I only play my main, why charge 3 times more gold for something I will only use on one character?
And seriously, have to buy gain for every color? It’s a never-ending gold sink that won’t be able to make your game last longer without providing new content.

I wish there was an “ignore poster” button on these forums (I’d pay 5$ for it) just so I can’t read lordkrall’s BS. I wonder how much they pay him per post…
Did anyone bother looking at the chinese version of gw2 ? They have to unlock literally everything by gold or gems, no matter how basic the feature seems. A-net probably knows that they can’t enforce that kitten on their non-chinese playerbase without triggering a massive loss of customers, but it makes me wonder:
Are those horrid prices for colored tags a test to determine how far they can push us around without losing players?
i really hope that more players will continue with their protests against this kitten, because no matter how much i like fluffy little kittens, i just don’t want this game to gradually degenerate into somthing resembling the chinese gw2 version. Don’t let them think it’s okay, who knows what they are coming up with in the future if we let them get away with this now :/

Don’t worry, the only officials visiting the WvW-Discussion Subforum are the moderators, and then only to delete “Matchup Threads” or threads that dare complain about hacking/exploiting in WvW
Of course. I bought mine way back as well.
But the fact remains that people would complain if all of a sudden people would get refunds for having more than 1 tag while the price would rise to a triple one.do you agree with anets proposal?
He always agree with everything that Anet do or say, no point to ask him, the answer is yes.

Dont bother with him, hes the ultra white knight of anet. On topic: 300g for each colour is outrageous especially for wvw players that hardly earn any gold and those gold earned are going straight back into wvw like upgrades and sieges.

With enough player feedback on these features Anet still has a chance to make corrections. Needing gold to unlock a tag color is a joke.

Let the pve heroes have the shinie badges , but please add guild tags for WvW

not that I support this, but it’ll make it so that the commander will generally have to have the support of the general community to get these different color tags, so if some one is rolling around with a red tag… you know their good?
But the same thing still works for your system and its less crazy in terms of price. I like it a lot better.
PRAISE GEESUS
I have thousands of gold, yet I think this change is redicilous. 300g for a new color commander tag would be very low on my priority list of what to buy next.
I wonder if they will ever be able to do anything at all that will not lead to people complaining like mad.

And if it’s not Krall to come over to whiteknight Anet again, I don’t know who else will .
We are complaining because there’re reasons to, not because we enjoy it. So don’t be so “certain” that we will still whine if it was free.
No, 300g is not impossible to get… It will only take how many months for hardcore WvW players??? Because I just sold all I had collected during the past 2.5 months to buy a tag for 100..
300g is not easy even in PvE nowdays. Are you living in some parallel universe or some kind of your imaginary world? Every profitable thing that we find – gets nerfed, and then they politely remind you that you can always buy gems with cash and exchange them for gold. Repair cost was never an issue. You can never have enough badges to buy all the siege you need as a commander.

Krall is not DVon…? At least I hope not. He is a guildie, or was, haven’t seen him online in ages, unless he has left the guild. But it’s true – in every criticizing thread here or on le reddit, he’s there, trying to defend them so hard that makes me sad.

Not really. Any person who plays the TP can buy them all instantly without a problem. Usually the good commanders are the poor ones.
Looks like Anet will deliver for a redicilous cost. 300g per color for a QoL improvement. Fire the employe who decided this already because he has no idea what WvW commanders need
Sogradde.8016Why would you make different colour tags unlockable by gold (and lots of it) instead of a WvW ability? One new colour per rank in “Rainbow Commanding” or whatever the hell you want to call it would make so much more sense.
WXP and Badges are the currencies of WvW not Gold.10/10 Devon Carver, great trolling there.
Unfortunately A-net cares for the PvE crowd far more than for the WvW crowd, because they are far greater in Numbers, have more Gold, and are (though this is just a guess) more likely to buy more gold via gems (and in turn give a-net more $) than your average WvWer. Chances are good that PvE Commanders won’t complain too much about this change; after all PvEing is almost purely profitable – it’s not like PvEComs would have to spend their money for upgrading keeps, siege and food, and PvE-stuff is far more profitable than WvW-stuff anyway (i don’t count the Karmatrains in EotM as “WvW”), so they aren’t hit nearly as hard by this as your average WvW-Commander
Virtute.8251:100g for each black lion vendor tab unlock. Can’t buy new skins until you unlock the vendor tab.
:D Why stop at that? We could make non-Commanders pay as well! Something like
- Players can now unlock the ability to see Commander Tags from allied Commanders.
-unlocking the ability to see Blue Commander Tags costs 50g; unlocking the ability to see nonblue-Commander Tags then costs 25g for each color. - Players can now unlock the ability to join Squads from Commanders.
-unlocking the ability to join a blue Squad costs 30g; unlocking the ability to join nonblue-squads then costs 15g for each color.

bump for support. If it wasn’t for Anet’s history of almost getting feature changes correct, i would bet on this being a PR move to generate controversy and publicity for the new feature patch.
Rarely does this community find itself primarily on the same side of an issue, so something must be afoot. WvW has lost a lot of players (at least from my perspective as a WvW player), and colored tags is a big change to improve and enhance WvW.
In order to get the word out to bring players back to WvW, Anet implements a controversial change to generate buzz and reach out to old GW2 players that may not follow the game closely, but would likely hear about what is regarded in the community as a big mistake.
I would imagine changing the colored tags to be more accessible would be a relatively easy change, so they set themselves up to be in a position of “OK you guys are right! We are changing the tags, because we are listening and we are here for you!”
Tl;dr – the change is a sloppy misstep or a calculated PR move. I’ll be selling tinfoil hats for 300g. If you want a different colored tinfoil hat it will be an additional 300g.
This is exactly why we need Anet talking with us. These decisions are so bad its actually funny. We had a CDI a few months ago to figure this kind of thing out. Colored pins weren’t the problem. The problem was people wanting to run with guilds or pinless not having a way to follow others.
Then when you look at something like PvE, its purely a status symbol already. The colors will just make it worse. Yellow outfit, might as well wear a yellow commander pin to match that.
Hopefully this reaction by the community let’s you have plenty of time to reconsider, and change things before the patch hits.
Yeah I think this decision is a poor response to the request for different coloured tags. The proposed system fails to consider how the cost of entry will impact on its use and the core design seems to fail at granting much increased utility.
- The cost of different colours is too high resulting in most players only acquiring one. Assuming all players are grandfathered in with blue, almost everyone will be blue. Players who want to make use of the different colours to organise will be limited to a single colour resulting in an inability to access the organisational value of the different colours.
- It defeats the purpose of having different colours if the majority of players only have one colour. They will load on the map, try to organise two different zergs but will likely have the same colour as each other and the end result is two commanders who may as well be playing with the old system.
- Using gold as the acquisition method perpetuates what is wrong with the commander tag’s original acquisition method. The players most able to drop 300 gold (or more) are rarely the ones who will best make use of a commander tag (at the very least it unfairly excludes players who would be excellent users of a tag that would benefit the experience of many players, for an arbitrary gold reason). It becomes a prestige or collectors item and not the organisational tool WvW players want it to be. Players who legitimately want to organise in WvW (and enhance the experience that the WvW design team should be putting at the core of the design decisions) are being limited by a gold sink that is co-opting an organisational tool.
If I were to redesign the tag system I would have gone about it a different way:
- Create a different colour tag that only guild and squad members can see. This allows players to organise themselves in private groups without distracting from someone who purchased a blue tag. The ‘always visible’ value of a blue tag is maintained and valuable organisational tool is given to groups who don’t fit into the needs fulfilled by the current tool. Sometimes players want to organise without attracting every ally on the map, whether it be for havok groups, small ops that don’t pull players from the main zerg etc.
- Change the acquisition method to require a merchant that becomes accessible when a guild has researched it (which fits into its design as a guild empowering tool) and allow players to purchase it primarily with Badges of Honour. Even if everyone in the game buys one, it’s only useful to be seen by squad members or guild members.
If I had to fix the current proposal I would:
- Make all colour tags a basic feature of the new system. Commander tags are an organisational tool not a gold sink.
- At the very least adjust the cost so that it’s cheaper/easier to acquire based on the needs of the players using the tag. Maybe make red tags require badges of honour, yellow tags require large amounts of gold, green tags are unlocked by a consumable purchased with guild influence and merits, purple tags are purchased with karma etc. This will allow players to acquire at least one additional colour for organisational reasons using currencies appropriate and affordable to players who play the content they want a tag for. Guilds can use influence to sponsor their own commander, WvW players can invest badges in acquiring it, players of lots of events have a new karma sink. EotM players will likely have it easiest (shrug).
- Add a new option of the commander tag which allows the commander to select to be seen only by squad members. This will hide them from random allies but will allow them to act as leaders for smaller, organised groups and a rally point for allies who arrive late, die and run back or just want to more conveniently follow. New hues does not result in better functionality, a slight adjustment to how the tool works will fulfill a desire of many organised groups.
Maybe i should try to get a job at Nexon…
Based on this post, you might be a natural at it!
I barely wvw and have no personal interest in the tag…yet even I can see the flaws here. It absolutely should be a free feature once a tag is bought. How was this approved or not caught early in the design process?
Talk about not seeing the wood for the trees.
The colour tags should be open to all WvW commanders who have a tag.So they can switch to form a group to do something other than what the main commander blue tag is doing.
This is just a desperate money grab if you ask me.
I have to admit I am gobsmacked by this. When I heard the price was going up to 300g, I thought, ok, it’s a lot of gold but there’s been more time to earn gold (for those of us playing for awhile, anyway) and with it being account-bound, it makes sense. That was when I thought that the multi-color functionality was built into the new tags automatically. Paying an additional 300g for another color is madness. I will definitely just be sticking with my current blue tag, and I would imagine most existing commanders will do the same – the cost of the ‘upgrade’ simply isn’t worth it.
I will be very surprised if the vast majority of commander tags don’t stay blue, rendering this new and potentially useful function almost moot and obsolete from the outset. I hope Anet reconsider this one, for WvW at the very least.

Nobody was asking for a pointless gold sink. It should have all the colors from the start. 300g per color is the dumbest and most useless idea yet. Since the start, people have been wanting more functionality for WvWvW. Never at the cost of something like 1500g.
I need to be able to function as a map commander, havok commander or guild group commander. I don’t have/need to throw 900g down to do this.
This is what will happen: The community will eventually standardize a color for a function. Blue = Standard commander for a map. Purple = havok group commander. Yellow = Guild Commander. Red = Map Hopping Commander.
Oh picked wrong color for the job? Your kitten out of luck. We need someone to tag up and havok camps? Oh wait nobody picked that color? Well we’re screwed.
It’s a just a terrible system for the acuality of the game.
Just make it fully functional from the start. You want more colors to mean something? Then make colors unlock via WvWvW rank.
this game was supposed to be pay to play.
Don’t give them ideas… next thing we see might be “pay 1 gold to be able to log in”.
I am beginning to wonder if Anet just simply Hates all of us players who enjoy being out in the borderlands for some reason…..
Due to the inequity of the WvW rewards system coupled with many commanders selflessly using what little gold they have to buy siege, upgrades, and food buffs, commanders tend to be one of the poorest populations in the game. .
Your statement is correct…..I spend a majority of my time in WvW and it is quite true that we seem to get the lowest rewards for playing in what should be the shining achievement of GW2’s content….. Just plain sad.
ANet: Always finding a controversial way to give the players what they asked for in a way that neither satisfies or solves a problem.
They did a pretty good job with account bound dyes and the wardrobe feature. It’s WvW that seems to miss the mark. Not long ago weren’t the WvW devs arguing against account bound tags and WvW exp? It seems like WvW players have to fight tooth and nail for improvements (borderlands bloodlust is another example, a space for GvG is another example). The WvW community can be a hostile place but look at how hard they have to fight for features against the intentions of some of the designers.
And u guys rly think anet will do anything good for wvw?
For a wvw like we want to have it?
No.
They do it theire way.

Just ignore Krall, he has his head so far up their kitten he can’t actually see just how much Anet kittens all over its WvW player base. He will be the last one playing this kittennado of a game and still think their doing a fine job.
Someone sell this fool a bridge or maybe the empire state building, I can guarantee he will pay and actually believe he owns it.
I wouldn’t mind 300g for color tags if maybe spikes can be sold at the vendor for 10g each.
Wow I just got back to the thread and i can see a lot of people agree that the 300g for each additional color is kind of insane. I really wish we could get a dev or mod on this to get some tips from the community. A lot of the responses are suggestions on how to fix it. Try to keep the angry hateful ones out of this thread please. We want solutions not to be ignored as angry trolls.

Almost? It’s waaay beyond that point. Let me be figurative here: It’s to the point where after years of ignoring us they suddenly come to us, start mocking us, then knock us out with a punch, start kicking us and at the moment they are urinating on us. That’s how it feels like.
Spot on.
Maybe the 300g is a reflection of the development time it took to implement.
Many already know upper management with anet/ncsoft blots out the concerns of customers and even the voices of their own staff, in actual game development…. It’s no wonder to me that only charts and numbers have any value to the corp at this point.

This. You hit the nail on the head.
MMMmm anet must be on to something here . Yes yes they are definitely on to something here but why stop there. I’ve been telling all my rich and I mean seriously rich wvw guilds that we don’t have enough gold sinks. Its high time the tax man cometh. Now that Anet has adopted a Government style of accessing fees. Lets look into what else we can correct the pricing on shall we.
Well first an for most , along with siege razor requiring 5 folks to get him started . he should also require a payment plan of no less then 5g per person. After all he his doing most of the work.
Second I should think at all siege should also receive an increase of price. After all if a person can single handedly drop 20 to 30 sup ac carts in hills . Surely they can foot the bill for each piece to 100 gold each. that will keep the siege trolls away as well ..WIN WIN.
Furthermore I feel that the overall repair amour thing for free was a huge mistake on your parts anet.. I mean lets be real.. Theres some serious gold to be made in that area alone .. haven’t seen a single player run by me naked so u know they are loaded enough to pay for it once again.. However lets upscale that as well. I figure since a properly runed set with buffs runs into the high 20’s to much higher gold prices. I think that each piece should only be repaired for 5gold each.
How else are we gonna get all these WVW players out of the bl’s.. They need to be in pve brainless mining all this gold for the expenses. Lets be real folks …how dedicated to the cause can u really be . and on a side note if u can’t afford all these very AFFORDABLE changes,, well I hear WoW is looking for new peeps. Personally ima stand right here in line a beg for these changes . I mean my god man , after we cap spawn tower keep an garri ,, how can we not spend all this excess loot an gold ..its just sittin there in our storage wasting away . YES ANET MORE OF THIS !!!!!

The commander tag will become an account-wide feature, instead of being character-based.
To balance this, the cost of a Commander’s Compendium will increase to 300 Gold coin.
Each color can be unlocked separately in any desired order. There will be four different colors: blue, pink, red and yellow.
Players who have already unlocked at least one commander tag will get the blue tag for the whole account.
Players who have unlocked four or more tags, can contact support to get another color of their choice.
