With my yesterday’s experience with WvW I had another unpleasant encounter with hackers of different types. From those moving faster than with a swiftness boon in a “lagging” manner, to others attacking at a speed akin to the quickness boon without actually having the boon on themselves.

What puzzles me is that I reported these guys several times in the past months, yet I always see them in WvW whenever the servers are pit against each other. I can’t tell their account name through WvW, but same armor and weapons, same race, same class, same hairstyle make it seem pretty obvious that they’re the same players to me.

Now I don’t know what’s the reason behind them still not being banned, but if through the logs the proof of their hacking can’t be collected then WvW probably needs GMs.

Whether something is either wrong or right, someone will always complain about it.

I think toggling that on might be asking too much as you can call out players pm and flame them that was why the report function showing account names were removed….

I personally think that their server mates will do the reporting for the opposing players…

please keep in mind that sometimes the server gliches. this has happened to me before where i had swiftness and quickness without the boons. sometimes i think the servers get overloaded and gliches happen such as that. did it seem like the whole server was doing it or was it just a couple people? if just a couple people then may have been hacks but if it seemed most of the server then probably a glich happened

Yeah, I’ve run into the cheaters who, when you start doing damage to them retreat to 2x out of range in 1-2 seconds. I reported, tabbed out to get fraps running, and missed recording it. Not sure that does anything, but he was guilded. I dunno. It’s disheartening for sure.

Yea there’s a speed hacker on Borlis. He’s been reported(by his enemy and his own server). He claims it’s his client, but I aint buying it. I watched him this weekend. He was fighting at normal speed(strafing around at normal speeds) and as soon as he’d start getting hit he’d zip away. He’s been doing it for months.

There are a lot of hackers in WvW. It’s a safe haven for hackers, because your name is anonymous to all enemies. Allies are less likely to report hackers on their team if they’re helping them win. Remember all the orb teleport BS? It was always the enemies who reported it, not that it did any good because the names were anonymous.

Level 2 teleport hackers are popping in and out to steal chests in puzzles. Speed hacks are rampant in sPvP and WvW.

Showing the name plate would allow instant recognition of commanders. It’d be like commanders in wartime putting up a big sign that says “Hey! I’m a commander!”

Sorta like the commanders riding the only horse on the battlefield in the wars of ye olde.

It should be easier to identify and report people though… Maybe keep them targetted and just grey out the health bar when they are out of range or something…

It’s simple.

ArenaNet doesn’t want to show enemy names because they don’t want communication between sides, mainly harassment.

Yet there needs to be a way to report enemy players effectively.

Store a one-way hash of the anonymous enemy’s real name in the database record for the player, through a hash function such as MD5. Upon target selection show this MD5 in gray small text somewhere around the target frame.

Or show the anonymous enemy’s unique player ID, assuming ArenaNet would want to publicize that.

You cannot message a player by their MD5 hash or unique player ID, so problem solved.

There is a free hack program available (I will not name it) which allows, speed boost that shows a player moving and only shows a frame every few seconds which makes it appear that the player is lagging but they are not. This program also enables a player to fly and even teleport. I don’t know if it allows you to increase weapon speed, crit rating etc…, but it would not surprise if it did.

Anet has been very quiet about this problem, but I am certain they are aware of it. I’m sure you’ve seen many people using it for pve purposes. I know of an individual who does and sometimes he will even use it for WvW. I personally find it abhorrent and chastise him whenever I catch him using it, but his logic is why not use it when Anet is currently not doing anything about it.

I hope that Anet publicly addresses this issue soon, but the reality of this problem is that the people who use this cheat will more than likely get bored of the game and leave before Anet ever does something about it.

The enjoyment is experiencing the journey, not getting to the destination.

Isn’t it obvious guys, come on, WvW is a money sink for ANet they don’t want to invest more money into it.

They have long neglected it because their focus is else where; PvE, sPvP.

As the WvW community we’ve struggle to try and get them to implement fair and useful things that seem relatively obvious and straight forward, like a good commander system, which we still don’t have.

There are people who hack for sure but not so many that it ruins my wvw experience. Most common one being speed hack. I think the problem is that it’s really hard for anet to prove someone is hacking which makes it hard to ban people. Appeal system can be abused , i.e if you want to bust a zerg you can have everyone in a large guild appeal the leader of an enemy zerg and remove that commander from battle for a week.

It seems to me that it could even get worse since tomorrow’s culling patch offloads more processes to the client instead of being processed at the server. Anything client-side can be hacked.

What makes you think it takes more resources then pve? spvp?

Theyve added 2, or was it 3, new maps to spvp. And how many new items and pieces of gear to pve? Dungeons? Fractals?

A lot of the WvW issues are not complex. Fair loot, how hard is it to just notch up the gold and loot drops a bit?
How hard can it possibly be to add an npc that accepts badges for more then just ptv gear?
How hard can it be to add a means to accumulate Asc. gear in WvW? they added a bunch of new items already over various updates, just not to WvW. They even got a daily system and a guild challenge system that awards asc gear. Why not WvW?

No, saying this stuff is hard to do is nonsense. The effort to implement these sort of features, measures and changes that would really help a long way are not that hard to do. Because theyve been doing it constantly since launch for every other aspect of this game. Just, not WvW.

The problem is that WvW is more complex and pushing the server limits due to large amount of people in one small area interacting with each other and the enviroment at any given time. To make a story short culling, skill lag have ensued and that takes alot of resources to address because it is rooted into the game engine and related to the hardware as well. It only makes sense to address the root cause or find a way around it for future developments before introducing any new stuff on top of that. I’m not trying to find any excuses for ANet, I’m not happy with the situation myself and I wish the situation would have been different. On the other hand I realize wishful thinking is one thing, and reality another.

You think it’s to complex to implement a decent commander system that older MMO’s do better at…

PVE: Mad King, Lost Shores, Wintersday etc etc
sPvP: New maps, regular updates
WvW: Orbs (removed), Break Out events (that upper tiers hardly use)

That was the assessment at the 6 month mark, next will be one year, but it takes time because WvW is complicated…

It’s propaganda, they’re not going to say “haha, you got us, WvW is not a priority”.

The problem is ArenaNet won’t ban a hacker unless they can confirm it themselves. They’ll get reports of someone hacking, then send a GM to watch the hacker do his stuff.

Unless ArenaNet is employing 20,000 GMs, this process will take forever.

World of Warcraft has Warden. It’s automatic. You do some ridiculous thing like teleport around or speed hack, it catches you. You get banned in a few minutes of use. It watches 3rd party programs modifying memory of the game, which is how these hacks work.

Of course a lot of hackers may successfully petition themselves out of a ban, but it’s like the old saying goes: Shoot First, Ask Questions Later. (or Ban First, Petition Later)

I struggle devoting time to WvW because of these hackers. A single hacker can turn the tide of a battle. They teleport into a base and destroy all the siege weapons, making for easy assault.

This is is shocking to me, but it does explain how a warrior came down on me like the hand of doom and obliterated me before I even knew what was going on and how that one ranger kept doing the hit and vanish off to the edge of my vision…. I just thought I was lagging until it just kept happening over & over until I was dead.

I guess I have been naive in not even considering that people would be using hacks. But you would think that this could be detected on Anets end. Hacking ruins games Diablo 1 is a great example of this. Seems like no matter what you do there will always be people that cheat….

That’s the part I don’t understand. All of these hacks are by definition client side, and ANet knows EXACTLY what the client application should look like. It seems to me that some simple code check (hell, even a parity check) should be able to tell whether or not somebody has modified their client. Why should that be so difficult? Doesn’t matter if they are chilled or snared; they still run normal speed.

Still, you wouldn’t think it would be hard for the server to detect this. How fast does the server think the player can move? How far did the player move? Is A > B? Ban.

Warden also has a protection module in it, which provides users security from malware, keyloggers, and rootkits which hide keyloggers. If Warden detects a known piece of malware active on the system, it will block the user from logging into the game, and will display a screen which directs them to Blizzard’s support site for removal instructions.

On 23 June 2010 Blizzard updated the Warden Anti-Cheat Platform to version 2 – named Warden 2.0 – with World of Warcraft Patch 3.3.5.

Warden now scans Warcraft II and III game memory space only, with exception of a few tools.

That’s the part I don’t understand. All of these hacks are by definition client side, and ANet knows EXACTLY what the client application should look like. It seems to me that some simple code check (hell, even a parity check) should be able to tell whether or not somebody has modified their client. Why should that be so difficult? If somebody smarter than me knows what I’m missing here I’d appreciate being clued in.

They don’t modify any game files, they modify the memory. I’m not sure how it works, but memory editing cheats dates back to the ages of Game Genie or GameShark, except now they use specialized programs or CheatEngine.

Yes, of course I understand that the hacks don’t actually modify the files on the hard disk … they modify the file residing in memory. But the “file” in memory is the code that the server is interacting with, and it seems to me that it wouldn’t take much for the server to periodically check that code to see if any of it had been modified. It wouldn’t have to check the entire amount of code … just random sections.

The community has been concerned about spying and cheating in WvW. Using proxy characters to hit siege caps, things like that. Is that something you’re looking into, or is it a perception issue?

Mike Ferguson: We don’t have anything set in stone right now with how we’re going to deal with it, but it is an issue that we are aware of. We know that some people will go onto servers and just start dropping siege rams in the middle of nowhere. I think in the terms of service that if the customer service folks can go out and see that sort of stuff, we will ban those people, but it is definitely an issue that we need to address.

So it’s more of a customer service issue than a game design problem?

Mike Ferguson: We don’t want to put that burden on them as it would hobble progress on our end, but at the moment if you see [cheating] happening, report it and let our customer service folks deal with it.
