Hey all,

We’ve been seeing a lot more threads popping up about skill lag & other lag related issues lately. Also, we’ve experienced it ourselves.

I would like to get some more information to see if there’s something we can do to mitigate, or fix the issue completely. Here’s what I’m looking for (please try to answer every question if possible):

  • What kind of issue are you specifically having that could be related to lag?
    • Skill lag, rubber-banding, etc.
  • What server are you on?
  • Has there ever been a time when you or a friend are experiencing lag, while others in your party are not?
  • Has there ever been a time where one party in a map is experiencing lag, while other parties in that same map are not?
  • Do you experience the lag at very specific times?
    • For example, when 1 zerg is facing another zerg.
    • If so, can you estimate how many players are in each zerg?

Please try to be as brief/concise as possible. We’re not looking for stories of when you experienced this, just some solid data.

If you can think of anything else you believe is pertinent to this topic, feel free to share that as well.

  • No, most of our party experiences the lag as a group. However, there were times where some players had it, and some other didn’t.
  • The lag seems to be in the same map, and not across other maps.
  • At no specific time do I experience lag.
    *I experience the lag when there are a large amount of enemies in the map.
    *Estimated Group Size: 3 groups of 40+ or 2 groups of 50+.

  • Rubber-banding, skill lag, ‘action freezes’ – can move around the screen for several seconds but nothing else is happening (no animations, etc) then presto action starts again
  • SBI
  • Yes — this seems to be the case most of the time
  • No — it nevers seems to be entire parties experiencing the lag simultaneously
  • Seems to be when large zergs are on the map or in battle, but you do not have to be near the zerg to experience the lag. For example, I was on IOJ BL running towards SW tower. There was a battle in IOJ garrison with orange swords (was not SBI), severe lag and then DC’d near SW tower. No engagement with enemy forces at all — others in party experienced no lag and were not Dc’d

x Rubber Banding, skill lag, or in a few cases game crashes.

x I have experienced disconnect/lag with party members at times and other times I was the only one with lag/disconnect. I have also heard party members comment they had skill lag and rubber banding when I did not, we were playing in the same area of the map.
x The skill lag almost always occurs during zerg vs zerg battles. They didn’t appear to be large battles. 30 vs 50? One crash occurred in the middle of a zerg vs zerg battle in SM, but another was when I was just escorting yaks on a different area of the map.

Has there ever been a time when you or a friend are experiencing lag, while others in your party are not?
Everybody in TeamSpeak and map chat have been complaining about the same lag and enemy players seem to be only using their auto-attack and seem to have similar trouble not being able to use their heal skill, thus I assume everybody in the map has the lag.

Biggest lag has been on the Eternal Battlegrounds, especially when there is a huge fight in the Stonemist castle or on own BL, when there is a 3-way fight in Garrison (keep).

Has there ever been a time where one party in a map is experiencing lag, while other parties in that same map are not?

Do you experience the lag at very specific times?
Prime time EU (6-10 pm GMT)
Not every day, but sometimes

If so, can you estimate how many players are in each zerg?
30-80 players, possible two such zergs clashing or a three-way fight in Garrison (keep) or the Stonemist castle, but the lag also exists when I am on the other side of the map, solo roaming alone.

Disconnects seem to often more frequently when the server is more heavily loaded and sometimes many players from one guild get disconnect at same time, despite they are playing from different countries and using different Internet service providers, so this must be an Arenanet server related issue.

  • Skill lag. Can’t heal, can’t switch weapons, can’t attack. (can last up to 10 minutes or until I die)
  • Blackgate
  • No. When it happens to me, I also see a lot of msgs on the map chat from people expereincing the same thing.
  • No.
  • Usually when a lot of people are around. Example SMC fights.
  • around 30 players in each zerg. Total 60-80 players.

It is more frequent on reset nights.

Also worth mentining that my frame per second drops to 5-7 fps from the normal WvW 30-40 fps. In PvE I get 80-90 fps.

My network connection is 100 Mbits fiber line and my machine is 8 core AMD 8350 with ATI 7970 running of a Samsmung EVO 840 1TB SSD.

-Doesn’t have to just be zerg vs. zerg, we can feel when zergs run by our small havoc group. Anything with 40+ players seems to do that for me.

No specific time but the lag is worse in wvw since arround 10 day ago.
Just go in Tarnished Coast borderlands you will see the lag there.

Effects:
Rubber Banding – teleport, walk a few steps, immediately back to position before port.

Skill lag (Click ability, delay ( up to 3-4 seconds, action performed)) – frequently followed by skill “haste” – guards attack at 5x speed, invisibility lasts less than half a second instead of 3 – basically the server “catching up” I assume.

Has there ever been a time where one party in a map is experiencing lag, while other parties in that same map are not? No. It’s everyone, across the map, as gathered from map chat

Do you experience the lag at very specific times? started happening 3-4 weeks ago? Usual play time is 6PM-8PM EST. Usually orange swords somewhere on the map, but at this time of day our side is almost always outmanned

Just anecdotal evidence, but I believe this happens particularly around a structure and not open field fights. I have particularly noticed that the server seems to “catch up” at the end of a structure being contested when large numbers of people are registered as interacting with the quest associated with defense credit. I’ve debugged enough performance issues to place some money on that.

*it’s most commonly server wide, sometimes other parties don’t get it if they’re very far away from zerg (complete opposite side of the map)
*gotten much worse since last 2-3 LS updates (since EOTM onward), but it’s usually always there when 60+ people are fighting

Potential EU specific fix:

Re-do the EU Server route.
I’ve heard that it goes to many places before it reach it’s destination. (like 5-10 diffrent locations)
Back in NA I didn’t notice any skill lag, even my fps was smooth.
NA’s Server route goes right to its destination instead going around the globe before it reaches its destination.

  • spell lag, swap lag, chat lag, rubber banding, movement lag.
  • henge of denravi
  • sometimes specific to me, other times “group lag” – about 99.9% of the time results in being booted to the character select screen
  • happens mostly in the evening/night/early morning EST … have never noticed it in the mornings/afternoons
  • every bl for me, i tend to stay out of ebg
  • has happened in large fights (60v60 or even 40v40v40) or when large groups are in combat on the other side of the map
  • also happens when there are no large groups on the maps, during 1v1 or such sparring/gvg’s
  • almost always in combat when it happens

thanks for gathering data, here’s mine: with video examples

Rubberbanding, Skill lag (weapon/attunement swap not happening, ground targeting skills flash without firing,), apparent disconnects where players run into walls for 60-90 seconds before “SNAP ACTION” where everything that actually happened in that time section shoots past.

This is a time (video below) when I was lagging and the people around me were not, or were not experiencing lag

I type a message into /T chat at 1:40, it doesn’t appear in game until 2:12.

Server: Isle of Janthir

I’ve noticed heavy lag when non-wvw related server events are happening, and during NA Prime when one server in my wvw matchup queues all 4 maps.

Lag is definitely the worst on EBG.

I’ve been relying more and more on the lag to know that an enemy zerg is approaching. It’s like spidey sense for zergs… which i would rather not have.

TC and any kind of big three way fight. Everyone will complain at once. I see skill lag mainly and banners seem to be worse. Sometime it clears after a few seconds sometimes you get stuck and can’t even auto attack and have to log.

The following applies to both EotM and the ‘main’ WvW maps, though I do find the problem is not always as bad in EotM: -

1) Primarily skill lag: at best, 2-4 second delays between pressing a key and the skill activating, at worst skills simply not activating at all (I have noticed this especially with healing and elite skills).

2) Blackgate (however I have experienced skill lag and rubber-banding on my previous server, Ehmry Bay).

4)No. When I’m experiencing it, map chat indicates others are too.

5) Large zerg encounters – 30 + players – always result in lag for me. Often I can feel the lag start to take effect as I approach the battle.

I will also add that I’m an EU (UK) player playing on an NA server, and while I have experienced lag occasionally in PVE, it is nowhere near as bad or as frequent.

3. Yes, but only for a short time. Group Lag tends to happen during large queued map fights.
4. Usually everyone in voice chat will have the same problem at the same time. Then the problem passes. However, when we are near a large enemy zerg, some people will feel the map get laggy
5. Large zerg battles, being near a large zerg, but not seeing it yet. queued maps
6. 20 vs 20 is when you start to feel lag in my experience., but it gets worse with more people

Skill lag, yaks lagging out, workers rubber banding all over keeps. When it hits EPIC LAG, you’ll have a lot of people crashing to desktop. If there’s a fight at garrison, often you will lag at bay/hills side spawn. Also, waypoints will often lag to the point where it appears ‘open’ but it will not uncontest. Or, it should be contested, and it’s not. Lag also effects the use of siege (IE: Trebs will sometimes fire 100% if you just tap it once, because they are lagged out).

Now and then, yes. I attribute this to my computer instead of server lag, when that happens.

Yes. Sometimes if one group is mid-fight, you may have a group at spawn or far away that isn’t lagging. Not always, or often.

Yes. The worst places for it would be garrison lords room, and stonemist, but it happens everywhere.

If so, can you estimate how many players are in each zerg?

You know, these are T1 zergs, so they could be anywhere from 50-80 players. I guess I’d average that out at 65 v 65 v 65, but could be more?

The recent hotfix seems to have fixed the disconnect issues in eternal battlegrounds. The lag seems to be much better now that the LA event is over (i think the overflows were eating into the resources allocated for wvw).
1. Skill lag and rubber-banding will be present in large engagements between two servers (30v30) or when 3 servers meet even with smaller numbers (20v20v20).
2. FA. Pretty much any of the top 9 servers will experience skill lag.
3-4. Usually when individuals experience lag that others don’t, it’s assumed to be a local problem and not a server problem.

Another interesting thing that was pointed out to me earlier last week is that it seems the servers rotate ‘priorities’ for skill usage. All servers will experience skill lag simultaneously, but it seems like 1 server at a time will be suddenly able to input commands while another server still cannot (eg. channel meteor shower). When this happens everyone yells “Priority” and spams as many skills as they can. It then seems to go away and the other server can suddenly use skills when all you can do is spam 1. And this will continue until the battle is over.
Once the battle is over, and the skill lag starts to clear up, it is followed with an intense period of Super speed, where your attack speed is effectively doubled, and trebuchets fire like machine guns. Hilarious, but broken. Everyone on every server experiences this following periods of intense skill lag. Lasts anywhere from several seconds to a couple minutes, depending on the severity of the preceding skill lag.

No, the lag will be map-wide.

> SMC fights where 2/3 servers clash. The lag will be as horrible as that you cannot use any skills but your 1 skill or it can be as bad as that you cannot use any skills at all. Also note that this is not exclusive to ‘you’ fighting a zerg, but currently when JQ and BG (in our case) clash inside smc or in their keeps; we can feel the lag all the way to our keep and even spawn.

I experience it when the zerg is >30 and gets worse the more there are present.

Also could not swap my weaponry. — 2:30 specifically for the healing lag. :p Though it’s not even the worst I usually experience haha.

Ah haha yeah that one is hilarious. 20 seconds after a fight someone will just insta-die, no down state or nothing just poof! dead lol.

Just going to state the times at which it’s likely not ISP related (eg, when others also experience it)

Issue:

  • Skill lag (4-6 seconds, or won’t launch at all)
  • Rubber banding/latency (up to 2 minutes, most of the time under 10 seconds)
  • Sudden death
  • Disconnections – can connect to game, but can’t connect to a particular map, mostly EBG
  • I might have skill lag and D/C, only skill lag, only DC, rubber band and skill lag, or all three

Server :

  • Augury Rock (EU) (lives in Canada)

Lag experience

  • Can’t say about same/different lag in party, but in guild and in map, not everyone would have lag at the same times (eg, I have no lag, many in my guild have, then they don’t anymore, and me and others have, then we all have, then noone have).
  • Sometimes, most people in a space have lag, other times, not everyone. Sometimes I would expect to lag, but I don’t (ex, EBG BP tri-factions) but when I run to get to my group, I start rubber banding / lagging.
  • EBG is more prone to lagg, but I experienced lagg on all maps

Time

  • Lag is worst at prime time, but I sometimes experience it in the middle of the night. (like, we are no more than 10 from my server on the map, overall way under 50 on all maps)

Size

  • Sometimes, there’s lagg when we run in small groups, sometimes in tri-factions (pretty much all of the time in tri factions)

Other:

  • Guild composed of canadians, french, belgians, and a few other.
  • Lagg is not region, or ISP provider specific, most of the time.
  • Sometimes, we could link DC with a specific ISP or VPN, but most of the time, no common point between people laging at a given moment.

(side note: last lag reduction patch did great to reduce it for some time, started getting bad again with one of the Scarlet update (not sure which, think it was marionette?) Thanks for checking it up! )

    Yep. Usually 3 way blobs in SM or Garrison fights. Guessing theres around 50+ ppl on each side. But sometimes I’ll get skill lag when two zergs are fighting in open field & I’m on the opposite side of the map.

Rubber banding – No. Movment was unafected
Skill lag – Yes several seconds at least. I counted one out once and it took a 15 count before the skill activated.

Not sure if everyone was experiencing skill lag but several people commented that they were in /say chat and /map chat

Yesterday – Several times in the afternoon server time. Always during zerg clashes. So far the only time I get skill lag is when there are more than 30 people combined in a fight.

Server: (until recently) Aurora Glade, (now) Ring of Fire

“Lag” 1: frame rate drop when large zergs are nearby but often not visible. We actually use this as an “early warning sign” – surely not intended! This is almost certainly due to client side processing/GPU and/or internet speed. Whilst it probably affects all to some extent different people experience it very differently. For some it is simply a handy indicator that trouble may be ahead, with negligible gameplay impact, for others it seriously hinders their actions. Toning down settings could probably make most people’s systems OK, but, as it is nice to good visuals when you can, it would be nice if Anet could improve the auto adjustment of detail to suit the conditions.

“Lag” 2: Skill-lag and rubber-banding if, by that, you mean where the actual location of the player becomes desynced with the GW2 client. All but skill 1 will fail to fire completely for sometimes several seconds and often, at the same time, the character will move on screen according to the player’s command, but his real game position may not be moving at all. Almost always this happens in massive battles. SM is the worst. Frequently Teamspeak and map chat will be full of comments about “horrid skill lag” and many players will die as a consequence. This really does seem a server side problem and IMO is by far the most serious and in urgent need of addressing.

- Can’t remember any sign of someone having and someone not having skill lag in the same party, but sometimes it happens to people in the same map or just in the same zerg.
- I experience skill lag in large zerg fights, almost everytime in large 3 way fights with 50+ from each side. It happens in 2 way fights too. And it seems to happen more when fighting for keeps and towers, where it has more chokes and more numbers being calculated. But it happens too when huge zergs clashes in open field fights too.
- It doesn’t happen just near the zerg. Once I got skill lag in the spawn, when we had a 3 way fight going on in garrison.

  • usually nothing until it hits, then movement and all graphics still work, maybe auto-attack still works, but other skills don’t just lag, they don’t activate at all.

  • I believe most players nearby do.
  • 3-way zerg fights (maybe 30×30×30) or 2-way very large zergs (80×80). Stonemist seems worst. A big fight in SM can sometimes cause lag in another part of that map.

This used to be much more severe several months ago. There was a patch that improved it a lot.

I wonder what will be the outcome to this thread? It is obvious that everyone have been experiencing the same issues since WvW seasons or even before that….

I play a lot of online game such as BF4 and what needs more precise network/packet server side processing than sniping someone in the head from 500 miles away and the bullet still registers to the head while the enemy is on the move on a 64 player map with vehicles /jets and etc…

I suspect only one thing here, the servers basically cannot process all the packets and things get queued up on the server side. For example my healing skill is now in a queue and that queue gets nested in another chain of queues and eventually lost until some code resets the queues!

I think the only solution is to increase the number of servers or upgrade them to faster machines. This is expensive but then there is no other way really….

*yes, I play from Australia – had put it down to distance, even though it is off-peak times for the server. Have been unable to fix from my end.
*If a whole party is experiencing the lag, the whole map is usually experiencing it in some way.
*No, sometimes it seems random, but often when there is an enemy zerg on the map.
*The zerg doesn’t have to be matched in numbers. It can be 5-10 of us against 20-ish of them. Problem is definitely worse with bigger zergs, although I don’t often see those at the times I play.

Thanks for looking in to this, its a BIG problem with wvw player base and really impacts on gameplay.

When we raid there are allways a few people that are laggin (rubberbanding, dc’s)the rest of the guild has no issues. The people that are lagging is very random every night its like someone gets picked on. Skill lags only happen when big zerg fight eachother. And the whole map has them.

The lag is usually when there’s more than a queue (80+) on a map at the same time.

If all three teams are queued in EBG, then the lag lasts for hours. This lets you auto-attack, or not even that. You can barely move even with all settings at lowest, and nothing else open on your pc. There’s really no point even trying. Being unable to heal or use any defensive skills at all makes it horrible.

When I get it its pretty much alway skill lag/ skills not activating at all. I’m playing on aurora glade. I wanna guess its whenever a big fight happens, probably involving over 80 players.
What I cannot understand however is that it had not been a problem for a decent amount of time and then got worse again some time after forum posts saying arenanet was working on the wvw lag problem. I can’t draw conclusions though as im not in a position to confirm anything.

using teleports: set location, appear there, walk 2 steps, back where you selected to land teleport.

activation of skills not ‘1’: using 2-10 results in a huge delay, even using nothing but that skill for upwards of 20 seconds, or more. The heal is sometimes much faster to respond, other times not. Maybe Elite too, but haven’t came across it enough on that front.

and not thinking it’s related to skill lag, but perhaps:

leaps, flat ground (relatively, it seems), use it to gain distance from targets, after first one will immediately rotate me 45*-180*(degrees), and using the skill queue to use my leap again back into the targets I was trying to escape (no I had no target).

There’s not much lag at all. Only when it is a 50v50v50 scenario. Especially SMC You can’t cast any skills for an eternity, until the fight is over, and no one else is colliding with each other on the entire map.
The lag that is experienced the most is “Skill Lag” You are unable to use your skills appropriately. 1-10+ Second delay. Some skills will work, some won’t, etc. It’s not enjoyable at all…
I’ve experienced ONE rubber-band moment, nothing too serious.

Again.. The lag exists while “Zergs Collide” You can be across the map and feel it, not even being there with the zerg. The lag will continue to exist until the zergs have gone there own ways, and are not “Colliding”. By Zerg I mean 40+ people in a clumped up pile of face roll. So having two of these (80+) Or obviously 3 of these (120+) The server performs horrible performance.

    Yes, it has started with the Battle of Lionsarch-patch. Usually there is no Lag when I’m playing on the weekend until 12 am (UTC+8), after that it’s generally unplayable for a few hours, it starts with skill lag → lag →rubberbanding → freezing → disconnects→ can’t reach Log-in server. Sometimes it depends on the map/region. On one map you can play without problems, on the next one you need 10 minutes to get out of the map.

If there is a zerg on the map, there are no problems in citadel, but at the moment I I reach the zerg (30+) or he has reach us, I can’t do anything just waiting to see me dead on the floor (wp don’t react) until I got my disconnect.

To be fair, if I have these problem on every map (pve, pvp, wvw), then it is also a problem of the internet infrastructure in the country I live.

- I often run solo, but the times I’ve been in groups, yes we’ve all experienced it
- I’m not sure if others on the map experience lag, if so, they aren’t vocal about it. What I can say for sure though is when there is a big battle going on and I’m running to it from my keep or home base, there is no lag, only when I reach the battle
- The lag only happens during big battles which I estimate at least 25 or more are on each side.

Interesting note, if I stop moving all together, the lag sequence seems to speed up. The lag always seems to start when the 2 groups are just about to engage which makes me wonder if Stability has something to do with it. Everyone and their dog is popping stability right before clashing.

A: The lag is noticeable as soon as any large enemy force enters the map (estimate about 50+ people) the lag is felt all over the map even if the enemy is not directly engaging us. The skill delay also happens during combat and is especially noticeable during large scale combat 40+ vs 40+.

  • Skill Lags, when huge Groups of Players crush into each other, only then, or when two huge Groups of players are very near to each other… definitely has to do with the amount of player characters that the game needs to calculate at the same time at the same place basically. Until today I’ve never rubberbanded, I always had only rarely Skill Lags or normal Lags where the Screen seems to freeze for a couple of seconds.

    One thing that is here also a BIG problem is all of the red enemy names, theres then so much red clutter in the screen, that you absolutely see nothing anymore, than enemy names.
    Thats somethign that imo creates for sure alot tons of lag for the game, its the same thing, why in GW1 some skill combos in the past cause game crashes/freezes because of too many damage numbers plopping up instantly than the game was able to handle to show…
    So I strongly believe, that you could massively reduce the overall lag for the game, if we would have an option, that removes all of the red enemy names from the screen.
    Give the game an other better method that shows us in WvW who is a friend and who is a foe, instead of clutterin the game full with the red enemy name bars that show us their ranks ect.

    Who has ever fought in suge a huge Zerg Confrontation will instantly know what I mean, when so many people fight against each other, than you see nothign more, than red name bars on the screen everwhere! This needs to stop and I’m 100% sure, its one big reason for the lags.

This should be infos, that are in my opinion only important to see, if I actually really want them to see and that by right click onto a foe, havign there then an option to let the game show me the infos about that player like:

- Which Rank is that foe?
- From which Guild does that foe come from?

maybe use this then together with other nice to kknow metrics about a player that would be interesting for WvW to read about foes that you fight against, like

- How many players killed?
- How often died in WvW?
- How often died through other players from that?
- Most played Class in WvW?
- How many kills from the total were done with the most played Class?

That are interestign things you could improve WvW with while hitting with that change probably 2 birds with one stone removing the fix enemy name clutter on the screen to 0 and most likely solving with that move the lag problems alot or even completely.

PS: Just as a side note:
Please improve the general game performance, like providing also a 64bit Client, so that multi core PC’s with high RAM can make finally use of their best performance and don’t get limited to just 4GB of RAM will also help in reducing Crashes for peopel, when zergs collide or in general everywhere, in PvE, where hundreds of people are standing around. Also please let us know more what your plans are regarding DX11, that has been announced a long time ago, that GW2 will support it.
What has happened to those plans regarding game performance??? We would like to know more about that.

Only when blobs clash is generally when it happens. It also seems to depend how many people are on other maps. For example last reset night my server had 4 maps qued at some points at EBG the lag was unbearable. And as for last night we had ebg qued fighting blobs and there was little to no skill lag once so ever.

    Yes. Most of the time only few complain on TS about skillag. if everyone experienced skillag, everyone would suddently be shouting bad words at once.

    No idea if its partybased or not. imo would not make sense. or you mean enemies? yes. enemies definetely profited sometimes from our skillags. probably the other way round, too.

    50vs50 or 30vs30vs30, happens on EB all the time.

Additional Info: Instant skills do activate at once while skillagging, from what i remember (Engi kits). not sure about if the effects occur during a skillag. maybe someone else can check that out (swiftness on kit equip for example)
