Greetings,

We’ve recently begun work on finding a reasonable space to accommodate the desires of players in World vs. World who wish to participate in organized, large-scale battles. We have decided to add an area to the Obsidian Sanctum jumping puzzle that is large enough to fit the fights and is removed from the entrances to facilitate some of the basic rules that are used during these fights. In addition, we will be disabling the borderlands bloodlust buff inside the map so that the players will be on a relatively even playing field. Finally, to make it easier to get to the map, we’ll be adding the map to the dropdown menu of WvW maps, allowing you to enter it from anywhere in the game. The space being added is really amazing and I think you are all going to enjoy battling it out in there if it is your preferred way to play. We decided to put this area in the jumping puzzle with the hopes of providing a space for people who wish to play the game this way to be able to do so without causing friction between them and other players who wish to focus on the other aspects of the game in WvW.
Guild vs. Guild is a gametype that has a lot of potential and one that we would never do anything but the best possible version of. That version, if it comes, will have to wait until the resources are available to build it. This change is an attempt to provide a workable solution in a timely manner, one that will ease some of the conflict that we have seen arise on the forums and in the game. WvW is an incredibly successful and engaging part of our game. It will continue to be a major focus for us as a studio and we will continue to put our effort into changes that are in the best interests of WvW as a gametype and the WvW community as a whole.
As is our practice, we won’t be releasing this until it is ready to go.

I highly doubt we see it this year. It will probably come during the first quarter of next year Jan-Mar.

Good job, at least we now have confirmation it’s being worked on. For everyone who will be yelling at them for a timeframe, please don’t. Just look at some of the details on the Bloodlust…. I don’t really want the devs to just copy and paste an area into a new map, and I sure don’t want a tiny area in South South where you can’t even maneuver.

Just finished reading it again, and I think he hints at there may be more of an arena-type style after this.

I get confused on this whole GvG issue in WvW. Isn’t WvW supposed to be an " organized, large-scale battle", where people who don’t necessarily belong in a large guild can join up into bigger groups and work as a team against others doing the same? How else do you define it? Do we define WvW as nothing more than a glorified karma train mode now, that will soon contain even less combat other than PvDing towers and keeps that are rarely; if ever, defended? Maybe it should be renamed PvD after this? Where small bands of people on the three servers just camp the map clockwise until they get tired, and wonder what it would be like if there were actual big battles going on around them instead?

Encouraging guilds to break away from WvW is going to be a mistake in the long run for WvW. I can appreciate a guilds desire to have some kind of large scale battle with people they know. But I don’t think it needs to come at the expense of the people who don’t belong in larger guilds. If guilds don’t feel they have satisfying battles in WvW right now, I think that’s a reflection of the issues within the WvW game mode itself, that need to be addressed. This supposed band-aid might sweep some of the game issues under the rug for a while, but in the end, I think it will just make the game less about a server community, and more the haves and the have nots guild wise, until the whole game mode turns into an empty zone like what happened to the game modes in GW1. Can’t wait to see the worthless outmanned buff even more in the future, and try in vain to fight another higher population server that is spawn camping me into not bothering to play for another week.

100% sure it’s gonna be off the path of the JP. They just needed a place to put it that is already ingame so OS sounds like a perfect spot.

This is a good move. It may actually draw more guilds to WvW. After they’re done GvG, they can come in and WvW.

Oh, but please turn off Bloodlust everywhere in WvW, not just the sanctum. GvG is not the only (or even the main) reason Bloodlust is bad.

Why are you adding it to obsidian sanctum in stead of just making it its own map? Last I checked Obsidian Sanctum was a jumping puzzle that sometimes people use parts of as an arena because there isn’t a WvW statted arena.

If it’s being added to the dropdown anyway then why not just make it its own map so people who want to use it don’t have to disturb people trying to do/prevent others from doing the JP?

Obviously crossbreeding this “gametype” with WvW proper was incompatible… why would you do the same thing again?

The issue is the GvG community is looking for fights on relative equal terms, without having to worry about [too much] interference in the form of outsiders jumping in, and people dropping arrow carts everywhere as is want to happen in WvW nowadays.

Do we define WvW as nothing more than a glorified karma train mode now, that will soon contain even less combat other than PvDing towers and keeps that are rarely; if ever, defended? Maybe it should be renamed PvD after this? Where small bands of people on the three servers just camp the map clockwise until they get tired, and wonder what it would be like if there were actual big battles going on around them instead?

Since the introduction of randomized matchups, this is what has been my experience, regardless of guild participation. T1 v any non-kitten beats them with superior arrow cart building ability and coverage. TC vs any non-T1, similar principals apply. As a member of TC, I cannot speak to how WvW operates elsewhere.
So, yes, regardless of the implementation of an “official” GvG mode, WvW == PvD.

I agree it is a reflection to the game mode, but also larger to the participants. To my knowledge siege-creeping and mono-blobing is more of a phenomenon particular to NA servers. With the league system, things have been getting worse. Even TC is losing guilds and people to T1 servers because they are [tangible] rewards-driven as opposed to looking for enjoyment.

Even the most hardcore GvGing guilds spent more time “raiding” in a WvW sense than they spent GvGing. The fact is GvGs take a couple hours at most, and most of the players interested in this sort of play style devote a lot more than a couple hours a week to the game. I do not want to make too harsh of a generalization, and can really only speak for my own experiences and observations.

TL;DR:

WvW does not have the feel of a finished game mode, and has been broken partially due to neglect by developers and partially due to [tangible] rewards-driven play by users. GW2 “GvG” is fun. This was ruined with the implementation of the new orb buff. Allowing GvGers a place to go that does not have these buffs SHOULD appease both sides of the argument. We will no longer “take queue spots” and [hopefully] interference will be limited given our own area.

I believe the logic is to create the JP as a type of “overflow” WvW map to combat ques on the other maps while at the same time accomodating GvG, which would also combat ques.

People are more excited for this than for most other WvW patches that ever came/got announced. Is it that hard to simply say that it will/will not happen before the season hits?
Or to be precise simply say that it wont happen before Season 1. Means that you just bought a timeframe of 7 weeks and can bring it up later. Otherwise people will keep raising the same questions all the time.

That’s right. ANet is not going to make a GvG mode if only a small proportion of players are going to participate in it, but at the same time they wanted to appease the vocal minority without investing too many resources into it.

So if the GvG community does grow sufficiently, we will probably see a formal GvG mode sometime in the future.

it’s very easy to integrate GvG into WvW and the PPT game. it would be nice if players were asked to give some ideas if the devs arent sure where to go.

GvG is basically the WvW endgame. it was invented by WvW’ers to improve retention and give their guilds a PURPOSE. it would be very foolish to ignore GvG and its popularity, and to not expand on it.

It won’t be GvG until you:

  • Add Guild Halls
  • Add Several GvG Maps (not one large area)

Simply put, the WvW developers aren’t allowed to make a GvG game mode. From what I gathered, they can’t make that decision, so the harsh criticism was undeserved, but be happy that they gave us a bone anyways and added this so we can still GvG.
