Whens the next WvW tournament?
Just wow… people have been asking for more tournaments ever since the last one (which was in fall 2014, wasn’t it?) was over and I know lots of people who quit wvw/the game because we didn’t get them.
Every time we’ve been asking we got answers like “oh we just want to sort out this issue” and “now we want to sort out that issue but don’t worry, tournaments are coming” and now we get a lousy excuse like that?
Because if they launched a tournament now it’s no question, BG will be winning it, the only reason they lost one is because they had to be double teamed the entire tournament.
So yes scoring/night capping/population imbalances, are major problems they needed to work on before bringing back any tournaments. We all know the previous wvw team was working in secrecy for whatever reasons, some of those issues may have been worked on, who knows. The new team is working on population balance with the links, it’s not perfect of course but it’s a “start”, the scoring/night capping changes are being looked into, it will take time for them to develop it but the work is starting.
As for tournaments, they ran with different lengths and achievements, and I think both had a combination in burning some people out. Pug commanders who carried their server during those times I’m sure were burnt out by the end. The first achievement meta required a long list of things to be done over 8 weeks, the last tournament was short 4 weeks and only required a few general things for the achievement meta. I was also on SoR for the epic meltdown, which surprisingly my highest rated post was in regards to that.
I would be all for flash tournaments, as long as they were announced as a surprise a week or two before and transfers were locked on that day till the end of the tournament. Maximum of 4 weeks at a time.
I would also like flash events happening like the golem event, while I hated what happened in that event because of how it turned out with the exploiting and anet turning a blind eye, I don’t think that would happen this time around with an active wvw team around.
But events could be the alternative way to get people into wvw, and to try it out for the first time.
Anyways, wvw requires a lot of work to be done, and now there’s an active team in place for that at least (probably more red post in here now than there ever has been in total for 3 years).

Our primary motivation for avoiding running another tournament, is that at the end of every tournament we saw a permanent dip in the number of players playing WvW. Presumably this was due to players burning themselves out during the tournament.
However, we can still run a poll to see if the majority of the community wants another 4 week tournament, even if it might be bad for the long term WvW population numbers. Though even if ‘running another tournament’ won the poll, we’d probably hold off until we get the scoring updates in.
Could this be because the only real tournament was the first 1, the ones after that where terrible, oh go in and do 5 events, then leave, you gave the WvW players no real incentive to actually take part,
If you give WvW players real objectives to do, and real rewards/achievements for them they will come and play, just like they did in the first season.
I like the idea of giving out Triumphant Hero’s and Mistforged Hero’s armor and weapons as match rewards, but the rank requirement doesn’t make any sense in that a person is not allowed to purchase any if they are under rank 1k. Why not simply make these armor and weapons ascended quality, allowing us to pick any stats we like, and give us one of these boxes at rank 500, 1000, 1500, et cetera? I think one ascended armor/weapon box every 500 ranks sounds fair.
Even though Triumphant Hero’s armor will never have the prestige associated with Glorious Hero’s armor (I have only one piece of that and get comments about it all the time), I think nice skins like this should be directly correlated to how much you play in WvW, and considering right now the only thing a relatively high rank gets you is focus from the enemies, it would be a fair reward in my opinion.

It is possible that some people burned out, but I played both tournaments in Gold League without seeing significant evidence of players burning out because of those tournaments.
In my experience:
Players who leave and site burn out were going to burn out regardless. The game was doing its job as an amusement motivator and the person hurt themselves. You remember that GW1 had an online time notification to players for that, and that the players ignored it? Same problem; personal to the player.
There were many players who returned for the tournaments after having already left WvW. I would bet that those people (and people like them) account for a significant portion of the permanent loss. That’s what my guild rosters have always indicated. It’s ongoing. Maybe delineating the data at the tournaments is not as useful as it seems on the surface.
People quit GW2 and/or WvW for reasons other than the tournaments.
I’ve seen plenty of players lose interest in WvW from a slow growing frustration at the eventual third tournament which never came.
If there is a bad thing that the tournaments can be said to cause, it is that the tournaments blatantly showcase the ways in which WvW is fundamentally flawed as a teamed competition. The flaws don’t make it not fun, but they do make competition insignificant outside of individual fights. Most player-to-player drama centered around perceptions of that.

It came right after many of the wvw guilds had left the server so we had no chance to rebuild and got stuck in imbalanced matchups we couldn’t win for all 9 weeks.
Sounds like Abaddon right now in the linking-beta.
Thank you for realizing that WvW tournaments hurt the WvW population. They are fun for 1 week, but end up resulting in the absolute worst experience WvW has to offer. Every day being a push sucks, and combined with loads of new players that need to be taught about the game mode it leads to a frustrating experience.
It also brings out the absolute worst from every server, as any glitches, tricks, or in the worst case hacks come out. In the first wvw tournament I saw a guild repeatedly have their mesmer hack under hills walls and port their 40 man zerg in. In the second we saw two servers win trade to guarantee the outcome. Server spying jumped to new heights during the tournaments, with every servers spawn being littered with afk uplevels.
The WvW game mode just cannot survive when pushed to be a serious commitment. It really makes me happy that you are aware of the problem and want to avoid it.

Absolutely, competition can be good and healthy sometimes, but it also brings out the worst in people. I was on a server that was the constant focus of this garbage. There is no need to make people have to commit to pushes everyday and every week, burnout and frustration takes it toll. Some people can handle 12 hour raids, every day, but few actually can or want to commit to that.
Honesty is not insulting, stupidity is.

Most of these complaints about tournaments are players blaming the event organizer for player-generated problems that occur in spite of efforts (or without any involvement) of the organizer. Especially the bits about “making” people do things, commitments to logging hours, etc.
I’m not saying that a 24×7 tournament is an event worth organizing on the current game model. I’m also not saying it isn’t worth trying again on other models.

This is like the ABL discussion – don’t people remember all the posts and threads on how bad the tournaments were and they should never ever be held again? We seem to remember the good things and forget all the bad things…..
I never miNded them myself, but I recall many people against them.
I recall many people against things, too. Kinda looking forward to this one going to vote in a few weeks/months.

Given that WvW tournaments reduced overall WvW player population…no more tournaments, please.
However, if you want to have a month long increased rate of reward track progress, that’s something that wouldn’t destabilize the population. It might even bring out some PvE players to WvW, but not on the overstacked servers who don’t really need more players.
As an added incentive, increase the rate based upon the score, if your side is losing, or even if you are outmanned, or better yet increase it for both.
Also, no WvW reward tracks in EotM.
I’d rather them do something else…. you have server leaders getting very paranoid before, during and after a tournament. They end up wiping everyone’s rights out of spy phobia. People naturally will flock to a top tier server to get their pretty shinnies.
Unlike PvP, you really can’t gossip or trash talk without your thread getting deleted. So there is no true competitive spirit to it…. E.g.
PvP: Did you hear what ____ said? Allowed to continue
WvW: Did you hear what ____ server said about us? Locked
PvP: ____ left to join ______. Allowed to continue
WvW: ____guild left to join _. Locked.
So it would just be a “there’s a wvw tournament, don’t talk about it, just do it”
There’s no fun in that

Before making any WvW tournaments, few things must be fixed/added:
- new scoring system
- alot of changes to the world linking system ( I hope we will get poll about this soon)
- issue with stacking the best servers/ changes to transfers.
Question to the people who are against tournaments. How you want to bring competition between worlds? Right now, most of the players dont care about winning, server ranking (ranking of servers is useless).
I think this is very important for the future of WvW, to bring competition and meaningful wins.
Gold, silver and bronze should be based on your place in your tier, not what tier you’re in. That will prevent mass transfers to higher tiers to ensure better rewards. Where it is right now, having just 4 tiers is a good balance of players and queue times imo.
I’m in favor of another tourny, and especially more achievement points.
People naturally will flock to a top tier server to get their pretty shinnies.
Really important point, unless people forgot about BG overstacking and getting doubleteamed for a month, which was completely unfun for everyone.
The Tier 1 Weapons will be made available in an upcoming Reward Track, much like the armor already is.
We haven’t fully decided how to distribute the T2 Weapons and Armor yet. Though, we are currently leaning towards players purchasing them with a currency that they’d earn as a match reward. We may also set rank requirements for the various pieces, so you’d need to be a relatively high rank(1-2k) to purchase a full set.
Just wanted to say as a WvW player this is great to read. Not because you are implementing it but because you are reading the questions being given and responding that it is something that you are looking at and will be looking into the future. As well as some realistic ideas.
Lately it has felt like a serious breath of fresh air that arena.net as a whole has done to the game and really revitalized it.
Agree or disagree with the changes the communication is outstanding and really makes the game feel like its growing not dieing.

You mean the first tournament that PvE players flocked to WvW to do things like repair walls that where being trebbed even when told not to and other detrimental activities? The achievements where changed for a good reason.

You guys are onto something here. Keep that ideia in mind.
Right now WvW ranks means nothing after a certain point, since you don’t have anything else to spend the points on.
Unique weapons and armors based on WvW rank would be really cool.

I think you could use the tournament tokens, and just hand those out for winning Skirmishes. Much rather see that happen than another tournament, at least until we’ve got a scoring system that’s widely considered to be fair and robust enough that people don’t stack servers to game it.
Season 2 was pretty great IMO, besides the usual night capping+stacking nonsense that happened pre-season, but the queues were pretty frustrating at times, until certain players got their achievements, they never had a reason step into wvw after that, if they didnt enjoy wvw, beside ktraining.
Also EU silver always had one over populated server that dominated, so I don’t think there’s much use trying to revive wvw competitively, besides reviving the GvG community perhaps.
Plays completely opposite professions to his main Teef.

I’d like to see the GvG community become a relevant part of WvW for sure – it should be a part of the system that provides a greater level of competition to those who want it, with even numbers and where you can choose your teammates.
Because of those two factors, tournaments between servers don’t work so well, but GvG tournaments sure could. I’m not a GvG player myself but I’d cheer them on, particularly if their victory benefits the whole server.

If four week tournaments cause burnout and pre-announced tournaments cause mass transfers trying to game the system, why not simply drop single-week tournaments every so often with no warning at all?
At reset, instead of the next expected match, we log in to a seven-day tournament with daily resets. Basically, one week, no advance warning, some kind of scoring system that gives fast movement during the week, ending with a final result and some smaller rewards than the 4-week tournaments gave.
That way no-one has time to get burned out and no-one has a chance to game the choice of server beforehand. I mean, if you could do the appalling and unwanted Golem Week you can definitely do single week events that people might actually enjoy…
I dunno, having it one week daily reset might cause just as fast burnouts. You don’t have one week to build your score, you have one day, and I could see some players putting in overtime for that.
In any case BG is winning all tournaments, so no point.
I’m more for the single week events like the golem event, as long as it’s run properly.

Cannot agree more; while fun these tournaments are only bad news for player population numbers after the tournament is over. That and people band wagoning to other servers, stacking them in hopes of better rewards and an easier time winning.

The burnout is one thing. The other was the dissapointment. Low grade and rarely happening rewards. Wvw players dont want to be the spoiled kids, but we would like a do something gain something reward mentality in tornaments. Repeatable meta achivements etc
Just the WvW

1: Tournament starts on reset night. No announcement as to when.
2: Duration of one week match. Recurring randomly.
3: Transfer lock out during the tournament or if you transfer during you are locked out of WvW for the duration and EotM is only available
4: Scoring will be done solely on PPK and the winner announced after next reset.

Wouldn’t this simply reward people who transfer to already stacked servers and discourage the status quo from moving to a server that is less likely to win the week? For around three years now WvW hasn’t been very competitive due to population imbalance and the winner of each week is fairly predictable.
If you give players a rewards incentive to win each week in a format (WvW) where winning is primarily decided by the server you are on, people will just move to winning servers and losing servers will not only fight outnumbered but they will also lose out on rewards while doing it.

Was a very big issue with the tournaments. I don’t know if it would be an issue with a weekly currency reward; it could be.
Without seeing how the War Score/Skirmish revamps will change the meta it’s really difficult to make any projections as to whether stacking will help, especially if they include provisions to protect the outmanned servers.

No wvw tournament…. for players get burned out? Ofcourse there will be some players burned out, but they get back.
Like in any sports it is great to have a tournament and really fire’s up stuff, after that players go on a cooldown. This is normal, but at least there is a reason to fight to hold ppt. To stay on a few more hours just to escort a yak or defend a camp..
Right now population might be steady in wvw… but sooner or later when people lose the fight only interest as they have now and ppt interest already gone as well it will lose numbers out of boredom. For it is having a dimension that matters as well, not just getting more loot etc.. That is for certain players a motivation not all players…
Even if on NA side BG is pretty strong, it would still be welcoming to have tournamen motivation to play wvw much. Even if i like the return of the old bl… for what would i fight for …. ?
It is nice to do a sport you love Basketball, soccer… but only friendly matches so to say …. like why would i do that… i would leave in the long run and get into a place where there is some fair square competition where my adrline goes pumping cause i want to defend that keep, i want to get that extra ppt in… for the server…
Not even to mention the fun for pve players get in… for those AP… which might result in more people playing wvw in the long run…
2nd more variable things might happen, which will be frustrating for people who wanna control all things… lol. But one players loss, will mean the others players win…
And both sides will have pve players focus their own goals so they get killed cause they needed the sentry….
But maybe thats the 2nd problem with Guildwars2 these days next to no tourney..
People only seem to have fun when they control everything and when they win… they can’t see the humor anymore… They can only complain about the other server using siege or do things unfair blobbing… while they do exactly the same… in a timezone where they have the numbers…
This is where i truly wonder… when do people become more happy… when they even get more stuff….. is that a purpose… that makes you happy?
Just give a tourney… with loads of pve players as well in it for the AP :P Some excitement.. yeah players might get burned out, but make sure it is more often instead of once every 1.5 years or so

Imagine getting burned out and then not receiving the reward because of some bug or that you forgot to talk to a npc and didn,t know after a week your reward was erased.
That said, the problem wasn’t the tournament, it was WvW and how pointless PPT has been as a scoring mechanic. With the scoring mechanic update everything you accomplish should feel as if it has an impact on the score. Then tournament or no tournament you will have players, providing that there is some map variety integrated instead of 3 copies of the same map.
Like in any sports it is great to have a tournament…
LOL, “sports”, WvW is nothing like a sport, as a competition it is a complete joke, it would be like playing football where at half-time 7 players from one team went off, and the second half was played 4 v 11, the idea of putting a tournament into WvW is farcical.

Good reason to not implement the “Last Stand” mechanic. Will cause unnecessary drama and increase burnout.
I don’t see the point of a tournament for a casual unbalanced game mode sadly…
I love WvW. But it’s not fit for competitive play like tournament.

I hope you mean armors only. The weapons are already in circulation. I don’t see the point in restricting those now. As for the armor, I guess people need something to earn and show off, but this to me seems like you’re encouraging grind which I thought is actively being reduced.

How would you implement it such that it were not a grind?
PvE and sPvP have it easy. If you beat the boss, you get the loot. If you win the match, you get the loot. How do you create that kind of incentive structure for WvW?
Personally I think that Skirmishes could be a really interesting option for this. If your server wins the skirmish, you get X.
LOL what a stupid reason if that was the case then why the hell do we have spvp tournaments not only do they BURN OUT faster for having so many so often but also the cash prizes to!

How is “there’s no point having a tournament because blackgate wins by default anyway” not a valid reason not to hold a tournament?
To be honest…I think players are burning themselves out during this World Linking Beta…imho.
OOOOhhh shots fired
I’d like to know what the number of players playing WvW on Weaker Servers are trending to be…
Stronger Servers need to lead by example to recruit the Weaker Server’s population, but without a guarantee they’ll move to them…so they have to constantly push for epic scaled fights to impress the Weaker servers.
Double whammy…
1) Weaker Server population want server identity…not having it…stop playing…or prefer a different pace of battle. Not Zerg based.
2) Stronger Servers have to up their game to do epic scaled fights while supporting Weaker Servers to win…Commanders must constantly run Zerg battles to hold strong wins.
There’s a more simple & elegant solution to this mess…imho
Player Driven…yet…Anet Controlled.
Forgot to mention…
Players on the Weaker Worlds that continue to play…will want the World Linking Beta to continue permanently to guarantee their Free Access into Higher Tier Match-Ups.
Can you say…Please re-do Pairings more often…I want more variety while you’re at it.
Don’t tell the Players from the Stronger Host Server…that Paid to Transfer to the Weaker Paired World as a colonist…
That ANet plans to re-do Pairings to help Re-Balance Population & Match-Up more often…that would be a kill-joy for them.

There is a difference between earning and grind. If they put currency/rewards out there to earn by playing the game and meeting objectives that’s one thing. To lock it behind 1-2k rank just because “so only high level players can get it” then you start talking grind. I could have the currency in my wallet but I have to wait for the rank, therefore grinding rank. Let me stress, I’m not saying give this stuff away. But it should be a better system than save up currency and grind out rank. Also in PvE you don’t really get the loot. This game is so RNG based you beat the boss, you get random reward. WvW has the same RNG stuff. PvP you don’t get loot, you get reward tracks which are now in WvW.
How do you create a system? Here’s some ideas. Tokens for objectives – keeps, towers escorts. Badges as normal. Maybe those hero point tokens can be used as well. Put up a vendor that allows us to buy items with this stuff, then mystic forge it into the reward. I know there’s a lot of people who have tons of this stuff sitting around collecting dust and will snag a lot off the bat, but honestly from years of sticking to this game mode being neglected they’ve kind of earned it. Every part of this game needs more ways to spend currency in more useful ways.
There’s a very rough system off the top of my head. Which I like better than, get 1-2k ranks then spend currency you’ve stockpiled while getting there.

If u’d allow me a sarcastic comment I think it’s more the “we Stopped making tournaments and started ignoring the mode” that was the real reason u saw a dip in population. Why would people keep it up when there wasn’t even any certainties that there would be a next tournament? If I remember correctly there wasn’t even a date or any indicator.
Underworld
Players got burned from grinding the achievements, not from the tournament.
Just do a tourney and leave the achievements and any short of grind out of it,and
see what the pop numbers will be.
A WvW tournament should be about the fights and the competition between the worlds.
When you go and fill it with PvE style grind bs of “kill X” and “cap x”,of course players will burn out.

However, we can still run a poll to see if the majority of the community wants another 4 week tournament, even if it might be bad for the long term WvW population numbers. Though even if ‘running another tournament’ won the poll, we’d probably hold off until we get the scoring updates in.
If u’d allow me a sarcastic comment I think it’s more the “we Stopped making tournaments and started ignoring the mode” that was the real reason u saw a dip in population.
No, population dipped directly after tournaments, I saw it myself on T1 servers every tournament.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
So…I doubt I’ll ever get the gift of heroes then?. What’s the point in keeping it in the game if you have no intention of making WvW something.
I think the dip after the tournaments was due to the really bad rewards
I used to be a PvE player like you, then I played Guild Wars 2
Before making any WvW tournaments, few things must be fixed/added:
- new scoring system
- alot of changes to the world linking system ( I hope we will get poll about this soon)
- issue with stacking the best servers/ changes to transfers.Question to the people who are against tournaments. How you want to bring competition between worlds? Right now, most of the players dont care about winning, server ranking (ranking of servers is useless).
I think this is very important for the future of WvW, to bring competition and meaningful wins.
ROFL..
Seriously…ANet…don’t do tournaments. You’re absolutely 100% correct in your position Not to Host them for the reasons you publicly posted.
The current WvW design Does Not support & encourage healthy competition.
The current WvW design can only support & encourage fun play by Epic Zerg fights.
I do agree, however, it’s very important for the future of WvW, to bring competition and meaningful wins to this game mode.

Tournaments failed because, the servers within were so imbalanced that any of the Seasons could be easily predicted. The matches being easily predicted because of Imbalance, made way to most of the problems a season tournament brings in the format they were given.
For this reason alone, a tournament shouldn’t be considered until server balance happens and til mechanics are figured out to make it fair and competitive. It shouldn’t even be something that’s polled on. It’s scary to me that it is.
The attrition rate after a season happens for many reasons. Many see it as a good point to “retire” after playing for a long time and burning out. People need a rest and others view the tournament as a end. Perhaps you feel demoralized because the tournament wasn’t balanced or fair and it damaged your community because of it.They will especially get this view when they return to the same meaningless game after said tournament. Nothing has changed. You loose a greater sense of achievement.
I suggest introducing new content for WvW after a tournament has ended. Like new maps, rewards, and mechanics. This will keep peoples interest and allow them to relax and enjoy something new after a chapter has ended in WvW.
