Problems with Engineers and Legendaries

Actually I use a Rifle quite frequently as an engie, particularly in WvW, where I use it to stop people with a net, before switching to my kit. And in most of the open world, you really don’t “need” to use kits all the time. So you can certainly show off your rifle, if that’s what you want to do.
I’m not so sure that most engineers are as kitten ed off about this as you are. Then again, I’m not a big one for walking around with my legendary for everyone to see it. Mostly because I don’t care what other people think.
They’ll see it when they see it, and they won’t when they won’t. In fact, the second legendary I’m going for is an underwater weapon.
I’m not sure how many people this has really ruined the end game for, though apparently at least some of you are really upset about it.
i’m more irritated by the fact i’m using a barret light 50 as a SPAS-12. why is the only legendary rifle most(only) suited for warrior? i haven’t even begun to farm for a legendary because of this. if i wanted to snipe i’d make a warrior. i wanted a shotgun, so i made an engineer.

I don’t recall telling anyone to take what I say on faith, and often advise against it when dealing with important topics. I have simply been stating opinions, observations, and experiences, your agreeing with me or believing any of it is entirely on you. And to be frank I really don’t care what Arena Net or any members of the community, including yourself, have to say on the topic. My goal is simple and doesn’t require feedback; I am simply going to keep talking about this issue until something is done about it. Period. If that means I am still bumping this thread or creating new ones two years from now then so be it, I’m just going to keep reminding people this problem exists and getting as much attention to it as I can. And given the nearly twenty thousand views this thread alone has gotten I’d say I am doing a good job.

Honestly I am getting to the point where I don’t really care about any engineer weapon. The only reason I want one at this stage is for a legendary, and there is only one legendary I really like and it just so happens that the engineer can’t use it. I’m told I should just wait and see if Arena Net adds more, but frankly they seem resistant to add weapons the engineer can actually use in any of their updates, and even when they do they are not themed in such a way as to look right.
Honestly at this point don’t we have enough magical swords? Can’t we get some tech themed weapons at some point? Give me something steampunk, please.
I have to laugh at the people who constantly tell me that I’m just greedy for a legendary because as an engineer there’s nothing really there for us. There’s some weird toy gun and there’s this techy looking rifle but nothing to catch my eye. If they looked at my post history they would see I spend all my time in the engineering forums trying to get them to make improvements on that class and only that class for a reason, it’s my main.
OP I completely agree, it’s not limited to this but yeah we have a fashion statement issue as well as an issue with not seeing the weapons due to kits. and breaking kit refinement hasn’t stopped people from using kits exclusively.
But that’s not the worst thing, the worst thing is since we are stuck with leather armor everything is an overcoat or a london fog knockoff for armor choices. If we had been heavy as intended originally we’d have much better armor choices, our suits could look totally like the siege engines Charr build.
Even our shields are sparse.
Oh GODDESS I want steampunk weapons and armor since this game launched and while I found a few pieces that are close there’s alot missing.
Any updates on this?

I think the Engineer is a beast with a rifle…particularly if well spec’d out with “firearms” traits. My engineer with rifle IMHO has one of the best ranged attacks in the game.
But if you don’t like the look of the “Predator”…I can see the OP’s point.
Currently working on the Predator for my eng. Having seen my GL use his in WvW (and discovering the clover recipe used to make it), I decided I wanted it. I use rifle quite often so it’s more than an aesthetic for me. Thought about going for Quip too, but that is still undecided.

The last word we got was from Colin back on page three basically saying not to hold our breath. They are aware of our problems, but don’t have any plans to do anything about them right now because of all the technical issues they need to work out first. And recent history has shown that said technical issues take a back seat to the living story, so my guess is that as long as they keep pumping out an update every few weeks we’ll never see this fixed.
It’s something we’re absolutely aware of and want to address in the future, one of my main characters is an engineer so I feel ya on this one. My poor quaggan backpack is visible like 2% of the time I play as I kit swap, never mind my weapon skins.
We’re currently focusing our engineering (programmers, not guys with net guns) resources that could work on solutions to issues like kits/skins on major systems that address issues higher priority and wider reaching like lag in large battles, LFG, custom arenas, spectator mode and so on but this issue is absolutely on our radar.
As always, please post your ideas of what you’d like to see solution wise, we love to see the fun ideas y’all come up with too!

It’s a 50 cal sniper rifle fired from the hip like a shotgun but that doesn’t bother me near as much as it sounding like a laser rifle when it’s fired.
Even if they manage to change the way the kits work, they definitely have to do something about how they handle gathering resources or gaining rewards enough to make one before most people will touch that. I especially won’t be bothering until they fix the grind required where some people have made the joke that the only number anyone seems to know is 250 ct of everything.
Reroll another class, the more engineers that do that hopefully will show them enough data that they need an overhaul asap, not turret fixes not grenade nerfs but real life fixes to their weapons..
And even if they don’t you’ll still feel better on a class that works..i personally had a engi i loved but i haven’t touched it in months..
Believe me I’ve tried. I hit content burnout at level forty with a ranger, and twenty-five with a thief. An entirely separate thread could be made on this issue, but the simple fact is that, at least to me, the leveling content in this game just isn’t fun after the first time though.
Clearly that idea of the zones feeling different and still being exciting each time you go through them because of dynamic events didn’t exactly work out as intended.
I leveled 10 characters to 80 and a few i deleted, i have noticed a huge disparity between the first four or so i leveled at GW2 opening to now, back then loot dropped freely and you leveled much faster now its a xp grind and loot is terrible in starter zones (except queensdale weirdly) all the way to 80 and you must constantly buy gear to continue, especially Ele, thief etc…
Sorry if a little off topic..but as stated i feel your pain..especially with Engi and to a lesser extent Ranger
Been playing since beta, and thought it was just me with the drops in particular. I believe they’ve been nerfed.
It certainly feels as if it takes longer to level up now, and I do appreciate content burnout, as I’m an altoholic…without crafting (which costs a lot to level), the pace is pretty slow. Loving the game still, but have to agree with you on both counts.

In fact Engineers and Necromancers are the 2 professions that need more skins suited to their class IMO.
Engineers for all their cogs and gears, turrets, elixirs and elixir guns don’t have specific armour choices to reflect their proffesion.
We need new flamethrower and elixir gun looks, new back packs, at least 3 armour sets heavily focused on an engineer look – but NOT locked to engineers.

I don’t know if it is legit or not, but some data-miners on reddit claimed to have unearthed some armor mesh (the polygons that make up the shape, not the actual texture/skin) that appears to have a steam-punk theme to it. I don’t know if it’s real or not, but if it is I just have two thoughts.
1. When do we get this?

I wouldn’t be so upset if you were actually utilizing these resources for higher priority things. But instead, you are just ignoring the Engineer and using these resources to create more skins for every other class.
At this point, it is obvious the Engineer is just plain getting ignored. Anything and everything is classified as ‘higher priority’. And since Engineer is probably the least played class, everything else is classified as ‘wider reaching’.

I already called them out for this with the last Living Story event. It didn’t go over well with certain members of the community, but I’m happy to see that I’m not the only one thinking this way.
they could make a generic legendary that you bind to any piece of equipment that gives it an improved effect (call it legendary upgrade slot)
it would be great if you could also choose which particle effect you wanted; electricity, water, ice, fire, smoke, rainbows…….
I have both flameseeker and Quip on my engineer, and altough i do somewhat understand frustration of not seeing them while using kits, i cant say it really bothers me. The more i switch between kits n waepons the more confetti pops out
I still have plenty of time to like at my legendaries while running around maps.
The effects of flameseeker could do with a bit more (or are there even any?)

I have the predator on my engineer, which I have been playing since the game came out. I do find it a shame that you can’t see the aura of the weapon when using kits, since kits are pretty much mandatory in PvE and you kind of shoot yourself in the foot if you don’t use kits in WvW outside of the static discharge build.
Would be nice if we kept the aura and footprints when using a kit, but its not like it ruins the game for me or something.

Oh god yes I hope not I do not want the steam punk outfit to be another RNG box I just bought some of those gems to get the new look.
Altho I wish they’d change engis back to Heavy armor so we could enjoy the better looking armor. Heavy has lots more gears on it.

Agree totally. We should have the sniper style weapon. We should also have a much longer range with our gun and if they aren’t planning on fixing the jumpshot they should just remove it entirely so we can have a big shot that works well in a pinch.
And while they have engis under the knife, how about giving us back our heavy armor because they sure aren’t changing our traits to match those of our brother classes (adventurer classes ranger/thief) which are built for burst DPS unlike the engineer hybrid without a burst option in traits.

There is one reason I would be absolutely thrilled for engineers to be made a heavy armor class; the Juggernaut. The legendary hammer that alters your armor when you draw it. I love that weapon, but can’t go for it because I hate the two professions that can use it. Making the engineer a heavy would make us getting our hands on hammers, and by extension the Juggernaut, more likely because Arena Net wouldn’t have to go through the extra trouble of altering the legendary armor effects to work with every medium set in the game.
That said I really doubt that would happen. It’s just plain been too long now, and so many players of invested so much into our armor. What is Arena Net going to go? Issue across the board refunds? Because I really don’t think that every single engineer player out there would be happy to log in one day and find their character naked and unable to equip the armor they spent so much time, effort, gold, karma, and dungeon tokens to get.

I know I’d be a lot more excited about going after the Predator as an Engineer if my #1 was firing from the shoulder rather than the hip… even if it was just a Predator-only thing.
…That, and if the changes next update will actually make me want to pick a rifle over a grenade or pistol/shield HGH build, but that’s another thing altogether.
I know this seems weird, but an Engineer using The Predator probably gives a meaning to the term “no-scope” that’s often used in many shooters. I mean, our rifle abilities shoot from the hip, so that means we don’t even use the scope attached to The Predator. I guess there is some humor when it comes to using a rifle as a shotgun.

The only “lie” i see in there is that actually no one is interested in your ideas. What I do see is a troubling spam of some roleplayers that got left behind ^^ Equip the popgun like all the pros and be done with it.

leave the predator model out when using elixir gun and flamethrower (ESPECIALLY the flamethrower, seeing as the predator already shoots decorative flame jets)
the explosive kits could easily have explosive effects similar to the grenade barrage effect
quip users can keep the purple mist for kits (maybe turn the flamethrower jets purple as well), and explosions act like the pistol projectiles (bubbles with confetti)
flameseeker prophecies can remain on the player’s back (instead of hobosack etc) with the effect active when kits are drawn
and of course, footsteps etc active as long as weapon equipped, even if using kit

I would say the same, but i actually started to question the whole game after like 2 months, after beta ended. And not only the endgame part. I defended it, i think i still pray for a sucsess in some way, but i am extremely dissapointed, how this starts to turn out.
Topics like this keep and keep popping up, there are more and more unhappy players, that leave for extremely small resons that kill there game, because devs dont care or priorize things that are actually worthless. (i personally made like 10 topic like this abaut all kind of stuff, even general combat and trinity and things that are a compromiss, and not an enforcement, but the community does not care yet…till they simply quit for resons they dont even realize)
I also agree on your class conclusion…classes would be good! IF the game had a more complex combat system. It is complex , but does feel extremely boring if you actually look what you are dooing. and that is because, there are no “combat roles” that is because of no trinity…that does sound good at first, but instead of : giving all classes all kind of roles, you TAKING ALL the roles away. All you do basically is kite mobs araund and deal damage (dd or dps)…if you fail….instagib, ppl rez you if you lucky. Hard fight = more rez -_-
Yes sadly i totally agree…as long as threads like this are ignored…and Anet keeps making useless holidays instead of actuall content a LOT of players and fans will not only leave but totally distrust Anet..that is going to cost them a LOT of future money…
GW2 is B2P. If a player leaves, unless he was a good gem buyer, it wont make a difference. He still bought the game and even becomes more profitable when he’s not playing since he’s not using any ressources. Empty threats like this one have no value.
Dont get me wrong though, i’ll be the first to say that, presently, GW2 is on easy mode and keeps recieving more and more easy content. As an example, my guild created a contest where players had to clear dungeons naked (only exotic weapons, nothing else) and we’ve completed a bunch of them easily.
Im going offtrack here though. As mentionned earlier, they wont fix the engi hobo-sacks any time soon, sadly. Equip your popgun and wait patiently.

Nonsense. Sure if 1 player leaves no one cares.
But players do bring in money, buying things from the gemstores aswell as being an audience you market future expansions towards.
Players leaving, even if they arent gembuyers, can have a big impact because players themselves make for content.
Or do you think this game will be fun when the servers are ghost towns? Where its hard to do dungeons cause you cant find a (good) group. Where fights in WvW are rare. Where in sPvP scrubs are matched against veterans simply because there are to few players for proper skill matchups?
And this gets out, people will know. And less people will purchase the game in the future, let alone expansions and whatnot or investing in gem purchases.
Furthermore the word-of-mouth is an important matter. Satisfied users will probably recommend they game thy enjoy. that could have impacts on the future market.
But viewing it from the financial side, have you seen how many bots Anet bans? That matter generates a huge cashflow since these licences will be rebought under a certain risk.
1 player leaves ,that actually bought 4 copy of the game and like 5000euro worth gems…yes that wont matter….really, if that is what Anet thinks, that they are doomed to be forgotten in the mists.
Not to mention the opinion players will have abatu things like this…they are basically making players leave in mass like this.

We’re currently focusing our engineering (programmers, not guys with net guns) resources that could work on solutions to issues like kits/skins on major systems that address issues higher priority and wider reaching like lag in large battles, LFG, custom arenas, spectator mode and so on but this issue is absolutely on our radar.
As always, please post your ideas of what you’d like to see solution wise, we love to see the fun ideas y’all come up with too!

So now, 2 months later, spectator mode and custom arena are in beta test (without any majors problem) and….. still nothing.
It’s something we’re absolutely aware of and want to address in the future, one of my main characters is an engineer so I feel ya on this one.
Well, it seems that you’re one of the few dev that really care of Engi.
I hope that after this big update you’ll have time to work on this issue..

In the past months i struggled to select a class i like and stick to it. But it only made me stop playing the game, and yet, still i came back after a half year, but still get to the same decisions….
I think the most terrible thing (besides engineers lack of “real ranged options besides granades”) are the design of kits.
A lot of players love them, and they are right as are the ones that hate them.
They are a good idea, but are implemented wrong.
I understand the concept of them, and my guess is, that it was implemented in this way only because of the lack of time.
To be clear, i dont think the devs wanted to take away, ONE of the MOST important aspects of the game from engineers. “The personal customization.”
My point is: While others can switch there weapon “skins and models” constantly even get (multiple) legendary, Engineers are forced to use kits, that can not change.
The real problem is, most engineers (if want to be viable) are forced to use them and swap them constantly, unlike other classes, that actually do use those weapons (and those skins) they obtained with hard work.
I understand , that many like (for example) the flamethrower, but i am getting more and more sure, many dont. No i go even further, there might be a LOT of players, who dont play engineer for this single reson.
For solution i wont repeat that 189000 posts that alredy exist on this “simple topic” Anet PLS read them, and heed them alredy. Atleast reply to the engineer community, that is getting destroyed by these “simple things” (lets not even mention hobo sack).
As more and more i progress in the game and read more and more on the feedback of the community, i keep feeling, that the lack of “personal customization” is what kills the game mostly. As i well explain why and how on my other topic on general.. This is a minor problem compared to the whole thing, and if something “minor” as this cant be “fixed” then the game is seriously doomed for me. Whitch is sad, since i waited 5 years for it, not to mention the 2 additional copy it costed me, and the another year wait time (waiting to be made whole after release).
How could i possibly want Guild Halls and major things like that, if i cant even get past the character select, because “i am out of options” in seconds?
I am not sure how many ppl you have working on this game, but you need a LOT more seriously and asap. Things progress REALLY slow, and many palyers dont have the patience.
I hope this does not sound as QQ ing. I only ment it for a “hey look, there are things like this” topic.

At this point, I would really love to see the hobosack done away with. I would really love to use a jetpack instead!

There should be an icon to toggle whether people want to see their equipped backpack or their kits when toggling between them.
Also, in the future, it would be nice to custom kit looks etc.
