I know your feel when it comes to Engineers with Legendaries. See attachment.

Really the only time I could show off my legendary is when I’m Lion’s Arch, or if I’m in a zerg killing a world boss where everyone can carry my crappy pistol DPS. If I’m doing dungeons, which I prefer to do than hop between various parts of the world to kill world bosses, I end up using my grenades.

Personally, I think the kits should adopt the visual themes from certain weapons we carry. In my case, I’d like to see the book from the shield grafted into my kits along with the page-turning effect to go with it.

Thank you for that amusing image. The shield was the only real contender for my engineer’s legendary, but I came to realize that it Throw Shield would more than likely have the same wooden shield effect…

Sad to see it does.

It’s something we’re absolutely aware of and want to address in the future, one of my main characters is an engineer so I feel ya on this one. My poor quaggan backpack is visible like 2% of the time I play as I kit swap, never mind my weapon skins.

We’re currently focusing our engineering (programmers, not guys with net guns) resources that could work on solutions to issues like kits/skins on major systems that address issues higher priority and wider reaching like lag in large battles, LFG, custom arenas, spectator mode and so on but this issue is absolutely on our radar.

As always, please post your ideas of what you’d like to see solution wise, we love to see the fun ideas y’all come up with too!

Most engineers use kits almost exclusively, and indeed engineer base weapons are widely regarded as being unimpressive.

I DISAGREE!

Only the shield is kitten in my opinion. I’m surprised so many Engis use it.

… I still want tengu.

Large battles are important, especially the dragon fights, and we definitely need a way to access gw2lfg.com through the game itself, but Custom arenas and Spectator modes really aren’t anywhere near as important as Engineer kits. Those are sPvP-only issues, and nobody cares about sPvP.

For the backpack problem, I would say have the option to let your backpack stay the same whenever you switch kits. A flamethrower attached to pink quaggan canisters? Yes please

As for legendary weapons, special kit effects would be very awesome.

But someone else has said it before me.

There is only a limited number of backpacks in the game right now; I know it binds resources, but I would love for them to have “kit” versions.

I think maybe having a specific spot on each backpack where your back piece is displayed would be nice, because being able to see the fractal (and other non plush ones) back piece would look cool as well, but the whole existence of kits on your back is iconic to engineers. I’m thinking a spot on the bottom left of every kit where your backpiece can occupy would look nice.

Not to sound too negative or unappreciative (since at least its going to be worked on at some point), but the way I read this is, don’t expect if for a really long time, like the end of 2013 if even then.

i may be the only one in this camp, but one of the reasons i haven’t wanted to get a legendary is because if i put that much time into getting one skin, i may want to roll that weapon/trait line too much. legendary kits are a great idea though. heck, legendary skins that aren’t silly are great too. quip isn’t my cup of tea. i was kinda soured on the legendaries after seeing the short bow and long bow as well. both are pretty feminine. there is nothing wrong with that. it’s just not my thing.

I think it would be pretty cool if they added some more legendary skins for each weapon type somewhere down the line. We could use some suited for other themes, but honestly I wouldn’t expect them anytime soon.

The simplest solution, as I see it, would be to have your weapon still show as sheathed while a kit is active, and somehow provide an option to hide the Engineer backpacks.

^ ideally this.

It would only work however, with pistol/pistol. problem I see is that if you stow your legendary shield or rifle when you equip your grenade your kit, it will severely clip. You’ll see your shield and grenade pack mushed together.

I think it’s going to take a more complex fix. Something like:

- For P/P, stow weapons on hips as usual upon kit use
- For Rifle, use rifle skin in place of FT & EG skins; No change to FT & EG backpacks. Swap rifle to offhand carry (some sort of non-combat ready position) for non-FT/EG kits.
- For P/S, stow pistol but keep shield in offhand for non-FT/EG kits. Stow both weapons for FT & EG kits, with kit backpacks appearing on top of shield, not clipped through it.

All of this with an on/off toggle for Old v. Improved Engineer Kit mode.

Either way, the particle effects and footprints shouldn’t be lost upon kit use.

I think a good idea, would be to have the look of kits change depending on the look of the weapon you have equipped.

That would be fantastic, however it isn’t really feasible for the vast majority of skins in the game. So I think it would be best if only prestige skins had such an effect. By that I mean legendary weapons, any super hard to obtain holiday weapons such as the Mad Moon shield from last Halloween, and maybe –maybe- dungeon weapons. Step one is legendary weapons though, as the hardest to get and most sought after should be the top priority.

I hate the general idea of “only the legendaries get it”. I mean, yah, they’re legendaries and they take a lot of work, and they should probably be FIRST, certainly. But I don’t like the idea that only legendaries get any sort of basic visual effect like this and everything else gets neglected altogether. Special effects like footprints, fine, those can be relegated to legendaries and used to make them seem more unique. But basic functionality like “isn’t completely removed when using kits” shouldn’t be legend-exclusive.

As another example, thrown weapons all use a stock default model when thrown. My Engineer throws his shield, its a standard round wood shield no matter what shield I’m using. Ranger throws an axe, its a basic hatchet. Except legendaries, which actually get their actual unique model used for thrown attacks. Why do I need to get a legendary if I want my Ranger to throw a cool looking axe and not the generic boring hatchet model?

As much as I appreciate the honesty and truthfulness, you can’t sit there and tell me that they can’t put 1 single person on a project like this I mean its BIG when 1 class simply does not feel like grinding out a legendary because it will never be seen. I mean we already get the short end of the stick when it comes to being that class that nobody wants to run dungeons with ect…at least bring it up to the team that this is a BIG issue and the engineering community isn’t gonna put up with this for much longer…

I like that you recommended a practical solution as i think that’s what the devs are striving for as well.

Ideas like a legendary changing the look of one or all kits is only as good as its likely hood of happening which i believe isn’t much. We all should instead try to think of a way to make legendary weapons visually relevant to those whose kits completely hide them.

My solution would be to do what the Quip does/did for toolbelt abilities, namely the grenade ability. Which is to change the visual effect of a kits attack. I believe the Quip changes the grenades into strings of confetti which goes well with the theme of the Quip. Have it change all the kits attacks to something similar(within the theme of the legendary). Perhaps “The Predator” legendary can change the flame throwers “Flame Jet” into a barrage of bullets instead of fire.
After all the main appeal of a legendary is completely aesthetic, the look of it and its attack is what drives people to work for it.

Hello Colin.

When I first started GW2, I fell in love with my Sylvari Engineer. However, I had since salvaged his equipment because every build feels inferior to everything else. Including Ranger.

Please give the Engineer a niche in dungeon teams!

As for visuals, please change the rifle. Hip Shot looks utterly lame, a master of guns should NOT be firing from his hip! It looks especially silly with Predator!

Furthermore, please change Overcharged Shot’s animation not to knock ourselves down. The fact the engineer cannot control his own gun makes him a joke.

I am confident ANET will fix its flaws, though. I hope Engineer lives up to the name of “gunner”.

Thank you!

3d Modeler and texture artist here…

I know and I know you know, that in this case the prop and weapon artist would have nothing to do with where you are pushing your “engineering” resources.

While their focus may be on some future content you have planned, setting aside some time to model and texture some new engineer weapons at least would be a step in the right direction. Events like SAB shouldnt be excluding one class over another for there reward focus.

Honestly, I would recommend mozying down over to Valve, sweet talk Gabe some and then see if you can do a bit of what they are doing with the Steam Workshop. He has some interesting ideas on encouraging player generated content. See if you can have the community help create weapon and maybe even armor skins for you. Use user generated content to fill up the game world with a bit more asset diversity. The art direction on some the of weapons has gone away from the theme anyways so it shouldnt be that hard to find acceptable assets from the community.

Furthermore, if time is a constraint which prevents developers from working on core content and balancing for the game (including but not limited to engineer problems)… then events like SAB probably shouldnt have been done to begin with.

Anyways, just some feed back.

I just wanted to point out that since this post was made we’ve gotten multiple new backpack skins (some animated), new armor pieces (also animated), two complete themed weapon sets, new gem store clothing and weapon skins, new NPCs with new weapon and armor skins, new town clothing and even underwear skins for some NPCs, re-skinned enemy types with new skill animations, new dungeon art assets, and even a complete living story chapter in what remains to be the most poorly optimized location in the game world. Clearly purely cosmetic additions are a higher priority than was admitted, and “major systems that address issues higher priority and wider reaching” referred exclusively to player-verses-player (someone want to explain to me why I can jump into the middle of a WvW zerg and get twice the frame rate of an empty Southsun Cove zone?).

My comment wasn’t so much about the timeframe of desired content as it was the disingenuous statement. Obviously there is a fairly large team working tirelessly on completely unnecessary cosmetic additions to the game rather than new features and fixes, and given the rate of cosmetic additions of late I’d say more man-hours and expense has been applied to said cosmetic additions. I’m not complaining, I’m just curious why Collin felt the need to obscure this fact.

Believe me I’ve tried. I hit content burnout at level forty with a ranger, and twenty-five with a thief. An entirely separate thread could be made on this issue, but the simple fact is that, at least to me, the leveling content in this game just isn’t fun after the first time though.

Clearly that idea of the zones feeling different and still being exciting each time you go through them because of dynamic events didn’t exactly work out as intended.

Sorry mate, but that makes me feel you have 0 patience. I have leveled myself 6 level 80s, even 2 of the same class. Yes, it was boring rerolling all the content, and yes I’m happy now I’m finished with them, but really… you shouldn’t be complaining.
If you can’t even bring yourself to level 1 alt, then you’re downright lame.

Perhaps the engineer could get an extra weapon slot, which sort of acts as a skin slot for the engineers backpacks and turrets.

For instance there could be an asura engi pack that made the flame thrower and back pack look asuran, turrets look asuran, etc. Similar things could be done for other races, like plant themed skins for the sylvari. Then it’d even be possible to make a legendary pack, which gave weapon kits and turrets new looks.

Such a system could even be expanded to other classes, perhaps different styles of necro minions, different shatter effects for mesmers, different style spirit weapons and so on. Where the end game is basically decking your character out in fancy new kitten, more customisation options mean more money for anet.

Are you sure all the engineering resources (not engineers) that were used for content that was released in the last month were not already finished before Colin spoke? Why do you assume they did that work just recently? They could have done it recently, or they could have done it before he spoke. They may have been working on future content this last month. Or other areas of the game. Without actually knowing the facts, it is a bit premature to call anyone disingenuous (a polite word).

I never said more important, that was you. What I said was that cosmetic additions in general were obviously a higher priority than Collin’s comment would suggest. Heck just look at the ratio of class fixes to new cosmetic content of the last few patches and you’ll see that one is clearly getting more attention than the other. I don’t mean to sound as if I think a cosmetic issue effecting one profession should be held above general content that can be enjoyed by all; obviously that is ridiculous. But I am pointing out that apparently Arena Net has placed higher priority on cosmetic additions than “quality of life” improvements and new features; the exact opposite of what Collin suggested.

Yes, yes; I know there is a difference between an art team and an engineering team. That said they are connected. For example who do you think had to add those new drops to loot tables, or scripted a bunch of new achievements in order to get a backpack that serves only to invite “I’ve seen enough hentai…” jokes? And do you think recent QA team meetings were focused on checking to see if ranger pets weren’t still morons, or that engineers weren’t universally underpowered, or were they focused on approving the blink animation on the “totally not ripping off Soul Calibur” themed weapons?

My point still stands; the efforts of one team effect the entire development process. That said I actually am willing to wait for this. In fact I don’t care if it takes an actual boxed expansion for Arena Net to correct this little oversight (really all it is), so long as their efforts in the short term are focused on improving the core elements of the game, and making sure that the basic game is as good as it can be. Clearly however that isn’t the case. Arena Net have said themselves that what their focused on right now is the Living Story. Their game and their choice of course, but it is frustrating.

I would greatly prefer that they suspend all development of new content and the living story completely until they actually fix the bugs and balance the game. And I know I’m not alone in that either. Obviously Arena Net has chosen to waste time and money on unessential crap like the Southsun Cove events, so is It really so wrong that I would like them to waste a little time and money correcting a problem that should have never existed in the first place? After all this whole legendary kit issue is only coming up now because someone on the development team didn’t think ahead when the engineer was first being thought up.

You may not know this, but the guys working on cosmetic additions are not the same guys who make class fixes or “quality of life” improvements.

Yes, yes; I know there is a difference between an art team and an engineering team. That said they are connected. For example who do you think had to add those new drops to loot tables, or scripted a bunch of new achievements in order to get a backpack that serves only to invite “I’ve seen enough hentai…” jokes? And do you think recent quality team meetings were focused on checking to see if ranger pets weren’t still morons, or that engineers weren’t universally underpowered, or were they focused on approving the blink animation on the “totally not ripping off Soul Calibur” themed weapons?

I don’t know…they’ve made some decent improvements on ranger pets recently, so yeah, I think they must have talked about it at some point.

That unessential crap, as you call it, keeps people coming back to the game. Not to say that what you want is wrong, or misguided or anything like that, I’m just saying that if they stopped the other stuff the population would shrink.

Many people today have the attention span of a fly. They move from thing to thing so fast, they expect to be constantly spoon-fed entertainment. If they don’t get it, they’re bored.

You’re not wrong in asking for something that should be done, but saying the other stuff is waste is probably not true.

There are two counter arguments to your point. First; people are leaving because certain problems are not being fixed, and I’ve seen several people turn away from the game because of the nature of this new content; disliking both RNG based cosmetic content and “temporary” story content. You can’t please everyone of course, but all that really means is that Arena Net is loosing players either way.

Second; World of Warcraft. Or any other traditional MMO that is lucky to get a content update once or twice a year yet still has a massive player base. Yes I know those games tend to “hook” players with Skinner Box gameplay tricks and sub-fees. Point is there are alternatives to constant content updates. Don’t get me wrong; I like that Arena Net has decided to keep pumping out content, but I personally feel like quality of life improvements, bug fixes, and balance should be a higher priority than tentacle backpacks and vague suggestions of what a perverted noble from Divinity’s Reach has been doing with his time.

Your counter arguments are only valid if more people aren’t coming back because of these upgrades than people are leaving. Have you been to Southsun Cove. It’s packed all hours of the day and night. We had five people all party up on south sun and every single one of us was on a different overflow.

I’m sure some people do leave for these reasons. But you don’t know those numbers and neither do I. Anet does. I’m pretty sure if it was the problem you think it is, they’d have done something about it by now.

If what they’re doing is getting people back in the game every month, it’s definitely worth the resources to do it.

I suppose that logically I have no choice but to concede your point. I just have trouble accepting it. Personally I feel like “under the hood” maintenance and repair should be prioritized over existing content fixes, and existing content fixes should be prioritized over new content. I understand why they are working as they are, I just feel like it is a backwards way of doing things. All they’re really doing is just adding to their workload; creating more content they have to fix later (case and point; the tentacle backpack is bugged and its animation isn’t working).

Again, there are fixes being made to other things, just not as quickly as you’d like. As I pointed out, rangers have recently received some love and some of that has spilled over to necro pets as well. It’s not night and day, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Changing too much stuff like that at one time, though is simply asking for trouble.

We’re just going to have to agree to disagree here. As I said I believe wholeheartedly that fixing what is already in the game should come first. And I also fully believe that adding more content to the pile is just going to cause more problems. Who is to say that a fix they are putting off until later won’t conflict with something they are adding today, thus making them need to fix that after they finally get around to fixing the first thing. They need to clean their plate before they ask for seconds. Or to put it another way…

You’re right about that. Lingering bugs, balance issues, etc, can all result in players hanging it up. But you’re also moving the goal post. This thread is about Legendary kits for engineers. I’ll wager the number of players who have left the game because they couldn’t show off their Legendary while using a Grenade Kit is quite small.

Your hangup is just that. Remember that development resources are finite. And remember that the Engineer is just one of eight professions. And remember that only a small fraction of players have Legendary weapons. Then think of all the people who are drawn to new content and new cosmetic items.

I’m not saying you’re wrong for wanting what you want, but I’m saying logically it’s just not going to be the highest priority for the development team. If the issue isn’t a high priority, then it might take a while to get what you want. And if it’s going to take a while to get what you want, then you’re just going to have to be patient and wait. Brow-beating the developers isn’t going to expedite anything.

I feel like Engies are missing some weapons in their arsenal. Wouldn’t it be logical that they can also use a Mace (since they are engineers and can build things), and a Torch (welding).

This way their legendary choices could expand to mace and torch as well.

Maybe even add awesome effects or animations to kits. Flamethrower has a different flame, grenades leave a special trail, bombs explode differently depending on the legendary. Regardless of priority i think that each legendary weapon needs to be worked on in every way. These things aren’t easy to obtain you know.

Grenade Barrage still works and it’s enhanced from previous versions. The barrage effect will also work when the grenade kit is on provided The Predator is equipped.

One of the biggest obstacles I can see for Legendary weapons modifying the kits is the question of what happens when an engineer with two Legendary weapons equipped uses the kit (either the pistol and shield, or new Legendary weapons yet to come out)? That complicates things (not overmuch as things stand, but it does increase workload with new content) and makes it a less-likely fix — even if it does have a certain basic elegance to it.

The other potential solution — essentially skill skins — would require more effort to fit in to the UI, but could apply to more skills than just the kits and needn’t be Legendary in nature. They’d have to build a new Preview function for the skills, and it would only really make sense for transformation or summoning skills (regardless of whether you are summoning a weapon or a turret/banner/minion), but since most classes have at least some form of summons, this wouldn’t be a single-class addition to the game, but something that all characters can (in theory) benefit from, it might make more sense from an implementation standpoint.

Another reason to be mad careful. lol

I didn’t say that everything that Anet posted was smart or well-advised. But even the stuff that they post that’s absolutely fine, and there’s plenty of it, gets twisted or complained about by someone. Half the stuff that people complain about is forgotten a month later.

Very early in this thread, the OP was complaining that after all this time and all these complaints, no one from Anet came to say anything, and I said, well if they did, someone would complain.

So you know, Colin stops, takes time out of his schedule to reply and the OP uses what he says about future intent less than a month later to complain. I think I am completely right in suggesting Anet stop responding to individual complaint threads like this one.

Unless they’re absolutely going to fix the problem, all they’re doing is saying we know there’s a problem and it’s on the list. Apparently that bothers as many people as it helps.

Can we upgrade the kit effects when equipped with the legendary? I mean not just for grenade barrage, but big-ol-bomb, healing mist and the throw wrench skill? big-ol-bomb is pretty easy. either make a mushroom-cloud nuke-style for pred, and a jack-in-the-box style for quip. :p

The Engineer was the first class I leveled to 80, and yeah, kit skins really do suck the fun out of the class after a while. But I don’t think this is limited to just not having legendary kits, but just skins in general.

I think the deceptively simple answer to this problem has been brought up before, have the kit skins tied to your weapon skin, namely your main hand weapon skin, unless your offhand is a unique or legendary skin and your main hand is not, at which point the offhand skin takes priority.

But not every weapon skin in the game, that’s too demanding. Just unique one, such as racial weapon, dungeon weapons, special event weapons like Halloween or Wintersday, and of course Legendary weapons.

And when you have one of these weapons equipped and switch to one of your kits, they have the same kind of skin/ascetic as your weapon.

For example: A Ghostly weapon will yield Ghostly kits, like a Ghostly flamethrower that shoots blue flame, or a Ghostly grenade kit that have blue explosions and particle effects.
Mechanically this seems like a simple thing to program, and we know their art team is up for it, they produce full sets of weapon skins all the time, this isn’t that much more.

Well, maybe it is and I am underestimating the problem, but it doesn’t seem like a difficult problem from where I am sitting.
Still, it’s good to know they are working on the problem in either case.
