The point is, those classes look and sound like their class type. A Guardian with bow and traps do not. The only thing that meshes things together is the word “Hunter”. If anything, Dragon is the part that should get removed.

And yet the people for whom this is their livelihood and not just their entertainment don’t agree. Maybe this fundamental difference of opinion over what an Elite Specialization “should” bring to the game will fade as we see more of them, or maybe the Guardian E-spec will be a weird outlier… but since all 9 of them come out of the same room and the same meetings, I believe the larger pattern will look pretty consistent. An Necro that blurs the lines to fight like a Warrior doesn’t add much to the game, but people seem to be looking forward to it at least in concept.

Dragonbane sounds more like a legendary dragon slaying sword than a profession spec.

The problem with the Guardian spec name for me is both the Hunter and Dragon elements. The Hunter because Big Game Hunting is outside the ideology of a Guardian. And Dragon because it is specific to certain PVE environments. I’m looking for a name that represents the new spec but can cover all fields of the game. To me Dragonhunter or Dragonbane doesn’t satisfy that condition.

If I had to compromise I would drop the Dragon part of Dragonhunter but keep some synonym of Hunter instead. Because out of the two elements, Hunter at least signifies what the spec does while Dragon adds an unnecessary motivation.

i would take Dragonbane over Dragonhunter, makes a much better name, to me at least. But at the same time, i partially agree with Mordeus, the “hunter” Portion is the part that gives tells what the spec does, however its also the part i dislike the most.

As others said before me :
- Dragonbane is not resolving most of the problems we have with DH
- The “hunter” part of the name is based on the idea the DH uses bows and traps. Although I find this association of ideas really uncreative and disrespectful of what the Guardian is, it gives a LITTLE HINT of consistency to the character that is lost when you turn the name into Dragonbane.

So we have a name that subjectively sounds better.
The theme is unchanged (many of us want it to be changed)
And we’re losing the hunting aspect some of us hate but that still makes the thing a little more coherent.

Personally I can’t accept Dragonbane more than Dragonhunter.

Nothing wrong with that. But when you say you’d like to see the theme changed – and by theme I’m getting the impression you mean the whole decision to give them trap skills… You do know that’s a request WAY beyond just swapping out a name string and almost 100% certain to be something they won’t go for, yes?

There will be other E-specs for every profession. Odds seem pretty good the next one for Guardians won’t be getting traps again .

What about þyrshunter?(http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%C3%BEyrs#Old_English) Its old english for monster/giant/demon, it doesnt change the theme of the class it all, instead adding to it(imo). They wanted a “Big” game hunter, well in GW2 we have Giants, Wurms, Ettins, Jotuns, Mordremoth Hulks, Risen floating eyes not just dragons to go after, most of those can be seen as Monsters or even Daemons depending on who you where to talk to. To me at least, the word “Pyrs” Fits more than dragon because of its implication, though i have doubts if it would work in GW2.

(i know this is about Dragonbane, but i didnt want to throw it into the other thread….if ya dont want it here, i will delete it though )

Changing the theme might be beyond the scope of change the devs are willing to make. Don’t get me wrong, I want them to alter the theme as well but I’m pretty open to what kind of alteration is made. I personally think just removing any link to big game hunters would be the easiest to me.

The other thing I’d personally choose to change is the traps. Simply call them marks. And you can even change the Runes of the Trapper to include marks if one must :P I just don’t think the traps fulfill any kind of big game hunter type of motif (they likely don’t work all that well on big targets anyway) and they seem far too magical and smite-y to be called traps.

But yeah, some changes are more likely than others.

Good premise, but it’d have to be something other than “marks”, because the thought of a staff necro gaining stealth and superspeed every 6 seconds does not appeal.

I’d call them wards. They act very much like fantasy literature magic wards, being hidden magical markings that activate when an enemy trespasses.

As to “Dragonbane” I do like it better than “Dragonhunter.” It’s shorter, it sounds more dangerous, and it echos back to a favorite book of mine that came out long before that Batman movie: http://www.amazon.com/Dragonsbane-Barbara-Hambly/dp/0345349393

If we want a fanatic tinge, then someone sworn to end dragons and be their anathema has a lot more cachet than someone who just, y’know, goes out hunting in the jungle.

I still prefer Seeker or Warder (not Warden, that’s taken in game by a major armed force) more for what I’ve seen of the spec. The dragon-themed trap (ward) and armor still work for it (remember, the skins should be available to all your alts who wear heavy armor anyway). But in the context of this thread, I’ll agree that “Dragonbane” has a richer connotative texture than “Dragonhunter.”

No I think traps and bows are fine ! Well, traps are not that good as a gameplay mechanic right now, that’s the problem… But that’s not the topic.

I can definitely see a Guardian using traps without being a hunter. You know traps can be used as defensive mechanisms ! Just think about the typical abandonned ancient temple with traps all around. They’re not there to hunt (Ranger traps !) or for ambushes (Thief traps !), but to protect something/someone, dissuade, block and punish ennemies/intruders (very Guardian-ish isn’t it ?)
Also the way they look tells they’re magical things. They’re not the traditionnal traps that traditionnal hunters use. To me they’re more like latent spells you leave somewhere waiting to be triggered. Well, they’re just traps… but a version of traps that goes well with the Guardian, and not really with a hunter.

When i’m talking about the theme I mean what defines the character in general. This whole idea of big game hunter, dragon killer specialist etc… I don’t like that part. We could keep the spec exactly as it is, just changing some names and definitions to make it a REAL ranged protector, though aggressive, instead of a banal hunter (which would suit the Ranger better). Maybe some FX (the only one I see is Dragon’s maw) and obviously the skins in the e-spec reward track. It’s not that much to do in the end.

Hmm odd. As an old man playing a girl guardian (Norn with T3 cultural base )looking at the armor design I have purely from an rp perspective, I would say the name dragon hunter fits extremely well.

Not sold on virtues and traps for dragon hunter for group support. Don’t see how it will increase the sustain of my teammates sufficiently, but that is another topic. The role this spec fills, well, I got plenty of other classes and players in my group that fulfill that role.

Right, I know they can be used for defense which is sort of why I think we could rename them and the pool of possible themes would be bigger.

Some synonyms (since apparently we don’t want to bring Necromancer marks into this) are maybe: Foils, Weaves, Crosses…basically defensive traps used to counter, block or obstruct the victim. In all other respects, they’d be Traps but just called something different. Of course, we could just keep the name and separate the spec from hunting in general. Their traps are just ‘magical trap symbols’.

But I hear ya on the other parts. We’re all just trying to get people on board with various options. I’m not particularly married to any suggestion and even if they decide to keep Dragonhunter, I just hope they nix the game hunter part!

That’s normal to try to explain things first. It doesn’t mean “we don’t care, it won’t change”, it means “we just want to be sure you understand our point before criticizing”
Of course they never designed the thing with the idea of changing it afterwards (even if it really feels like it does to me, DH sounds like a placeholder name they never replaced), but it can happen depending on the feedback.
That’s how changes to mechanics, balance or anything happen. Why not for a spec name ? Because YOU personally don’t care ? Then you can stay out of the discussion, it doesn’t matter to you anyway right ?

But the old men role-playing girl guardians just can’t handle it.

lol
It’s nothing about RP, how can people think that ? We don’t need to be into RP to have that kind of discussion. Anyway anybody can do whatever they want with RP, the classes in a game have rarely been a barrier to any RPers.
Would you stop discrediting people for the opinions they have or the way they play ?

Oh well, maybe you’re just coming in the middle of a long discussion without knowing what we’ve been saying…
Or maybe you’re just that kind of persons who are always saying “I don’t care, it’s just about gameplay”
But how legitimate is your participation then ? If you don’t care, I don’t know why you even bother clicking on that kind of thread. Whatever will happen about this name won’t change anything for you. And if you don’t want to talk about that, well… Guess what ? Nobody is forcing you ! But don’t tell us what we should or shouldn’t say.

The naming of the elite spec and some of the trait/skill names would take less then twenty minutes to do.

Changing the animation on ‘Dragon Maw’ would take slightly longer, and if they give us new unique weapon and armour to go with the new elite spec name then that would take even more time. However they could sell the old glove and longbow skins on the gem store to compensate extra development time?

I think the biggest concern is the possibility DragonHunters are part of a already developed story in HoT, for example one if the biggest theories currently is Braham finds Eir dead and goes all dragon crazy with his mothers longbow. If they have already devolved lore/story as part of the expansion then DragonHunters are sadly here to stay forever.
