[FAQ] Guardian - Frequently Asked Questions
I’m guessing it’s self centred.
edit: just done some tests with Raidation field and Hallowed Ground.
The combo selection is done the moment your motion intersects a field – for instance the moment you leap into a fire field and cross the boundary you will see the “Fire Armor” indicator, and you will see the glowing fire shield effect. ( This happens straight away if you are already inside one )
However you will not gain the actual buff until you land ( contradicting visual appearances ).
The radius of any AoE, such as a 3 stacks of Might from a Fire Field Blast occurs at the point you land, not at the point the combo was initiated or in the centre of the field. ( I tested this by placing a fire field next to another friendly and then both Mighty Leaping away and towards their position to see whether they received the buffs or not – I was also able to give someone 3 stacks of Might from a field initiated over 1200 away with a mighty blow chained with JI teleport to their location )
To summarize:
- Combo selection is determined from the first field your finisher encounters
- Where there are multiple fields the oldest has priority
- Combo effects are actived from the point the skill ends or you first strike a target.
This makes most sense to me, and should encompass all types of finisher without requiring special cases (ie for Mighty Blow)

Q36 – Does Inner Fire and Zealot’s Flame grant Fury.
You know what size the Merciful Intervation AoE is?
You know what size the Merciful Intervation AoE is?
Pretty sure it’s very small, like 150 radius or less – but I will see if I can find some way to approximately test it

OK, using Spirit Weapons against the Warrior NPC in the mists, and using the shield bubble as a crude range measurement and teleporting to the Sword when it’s at different distances from the Shield:
- AoE appears to be centred on the ally target although visually the guardian fires a cone through the ally ( the AoE is actually 360 degress )
- Shield gets no healing if I TP to the Sword at the edge of the bubble.
- Shield gets healing if I TP to sword when it’s just inside the bubble.
- Shield bubble is 240 radius ( compared against Symbols with Writ of Exultation traited )
So to answer your question the AoE heal appears to have an approximate radius of 240. I’m fairly certain it’s not more than that, although potentially it could be lower ( minimum 200 )
Should be able to improve the accuracy if/when I can get some guildies to help test it.

Thank you very much. So it is not so small, can be worth to use to heal (symbolic heal – althrough is good traited to heal yourself) several allies.

Q25 What are effective guardian builds?
There are different builds guardians can run depending on PvE, WWW, sPvP, or tPvP. Here are some links to the various guardians that have tested and contributed builds to this forum. – Blasino.3128
Are these builds still the standard builds? I haven’t played since Jan/Feb and I know there have been changes to the class so I wanted to know if the builds linked to were still relevant in the current meta.
Thanks!
More or less – although the meta has changed somewhat, the guardian has remained pretty static in terms of build viability ( or in some cases, lack of viability ). We have seen more general emphasis on meditation builds lately since they’ve had several buffs in recent patches.
Are you specifically interested in sPvP/tPvP ( since you mention “meta” ) – if that is the case then Jax does keep his thread updated, and it contains very relevant/useful information ( as do most, if not all of the other build contributors on the list )
No, PvE stuff like Fractals and whatever else there is nowadays.

Ah then they are all viable but bear in mind the “meta” for PvE is to do maximum damage ( ie full zerker ), so if you choose to go a different way then be sure you’re in a group that doesn’t mind.
Obal’s fractal builds are great, and you can check out his new dps guide
Q21 If I have Pure of Voice traited with Runes of the Soldier and use “Save Yourselves!” in what order do these remove and convert conditions.
- First to trigger is Pure of Voice which will remove the first most recent condition from yourself and allies and grant a corresponding boon to the players that were cured.
- The 6th Rune of the Soldier will then remove the next most recent condition from yourself and allies.
- Finally “Save Yourselves!” will strip remaining conditions from allies in range and stack them onto yourself, additionally granting you all 7 [yellow icon] boons.
I read the GW2 wiki, which agrees with this, but I’ve been testing it myself and I believe the 6th Soldier Rune actually triggers first.
If Pure of Voice triggered first, it makes sense that you’d receive the corresponding boon as long as you’re afflicted with even a single condition, right? That’s not the case, in my experience. (I tested it with and without the 6th Soldier Rune just to be sure.) As soon as you have two conditions everything works as expected, though.
I wondered if I’m just missing something from the explanations I’ve read or if others have noticed the same thing?

Your observations could well be correct – I last tested this months ago, and PoV has been patched a few times since then, so it’ll definitely be worth retesting to make sure. I’ll try and devote some time to it soon ( or perhaps someone else has made note of the priority )
Ok after some testing with the Thief NPC in the Mists, I think I can safely say the order removal priority is:
- Runes of the Soldier
- Pure of Voice
So you are correct – I will update the FAQ entry shortly. Good find!
I can’t confirm the order of Save Yourselves without an ally to test it on, but I will assume the Wiki is correct in this case.
A lot of general confusion on the web seems to stem from the fact that there is no order to condition removal ( people assume it’s first in first off, or last in and last off when it is actually random ( or some obscure priority system ) )
Thanks a lot for confirming this! I will have to look into Save Yourselves…
