The best build I can suggest is going in to your character selection screen and creating a warrior or guardian.

It’s a shame when someone comes here looking for advice and the first response they get is “Give up and look somewhere else.” That’s the kind of thinking that kills innovation.

I’m late to the party, but I wanted to throw down some ideas.

With no details on which kind of commander are you going to be (commanding pugs in EB? A guild group?) I’ll stay on the safe side and make a build that is the tankiest and the most solid you can be (except maybe some power pvt+knights builds):

With about 3k armor, 22k hp (24.5k with guard defense buff) and anti-stun and condition removal you are on the safe side for tanking. Blurred Frenzy and Distortion still apply for emergencies. Also, you’ll get vigor on crits, protection from Illusionary Membrane whenever you have regen on you and a lot of random boons from interrupts (via focus pull, chaos storm and diversion).

Your damage comes from sword swings (a bit weak due to the condition build), reflects and shatters (all of them applying confusion): you can combo with iLeap from very short range and Swap: it’s only a 1 clone shatter, but it works almost everytime and you have Illusionary Persona.

This is not the most efficient damage dealing build: it’s meant to give you a high chance of survival and assumes you’re commanding an unorganized group, so you can’t count much on external condition removal.

Heres the build i currently use when i have my tag on, take note i wrote this for a friend who has begun to use a mesmer for his commander aswell, im open to critisism aswel, ubt be prepared for it to be defended

Mesmer- Phantasm Commander

Defensive playstyle able to deal high damage while staying alive in a zerg.

Weapons

Greatsword – (Assassins)
Greatsword is used as the defensive weapon out of the two sets (surprising I know) but it’s a group fight we’re talking about, when starting to go on low health (<50%) switch to this weapon and keep ranged and resort to defensive utilities if needed.

Sword/Focus (Assassins)
This will be the weapon set that is kept out the most of the time as this allows to place down constant reflection through skills 4 and 5, reflection is vital when fighting against another group, not only does it hurt the enemy it stops those very same projectiles from hurting your entire team, sword has the highest damage on auto attack and with blurred frenzy you’ll be able to deal high damage while staying defensive, ensure that you keep attacking to receive the permanent vigor from your Dueling trait line, more rolls means less damage to be received.

Slot Skills

Heal skill – Ether Feast
Mainly because you can spawn clones fast so with this technique it’s the highest hps heal we mesmers have but the strength of this is the burst, use this when less than 60% hp any other time your shatters and food should keep your health up.

Utility 1 – Blink
I don’t really need to say anything about this apart from use this to switch from sword/F to Greatsword when low health without your heal.

Utility 2 – Arcane thievery
Extremely potent and easily the most underrated skill, in a zerg you will have so many boons to choose to steal, ive had 30secs protection with 20 secs 15might at one point, removes 3 conditions and gives them to your enemy, the main thing to take note with this skill is that it gives the full conditions back to the enemy, for example if a necro places a 30sec bleed on you that will overall take 2000hp, that exact damage and time will go back on the enemy of your choosing.

Utility 3 – Decoy
Don’t use to escape, saving this skill is wasting it big time, use this often when in a zerg, a target break is incredibly useful when outnumbered, as a Mesmer forcing your enemy to have to sieve through your clones to find you again is very helpful.

Armour/Trinkets
Soldiers Armour and Berserker Trinkets with one celestial ring.
Provides very good defence while still keeping most of your crit damage and precision

Traits 0/30/10/30/0

Dueling – 30
+300 precision, +30% critical damage
Critical Infusion Gain 5 seconds of vigor on delivering a critical hit. This effect can only trigger once every 5 seconds
Sharper Images Illusions inflict bleeding on critical hits
Confusing Combatants Your illusions cause 3 seconds of confusion when they are killed
Far-Reaching Manipulations The range of your manipulation skills is increased
Phantasmal Fury Your phantasms have fury
Deceptive Evasion Create a clone at your current position when you dodge

Chaos – 10
+100 toughness, +10% boon duration
Metaphysical Rejuvenation Gain 10 seconds of regeneration when your health reaches 75% (30-second cooldown)
Master of Manipulation Manipulation skills have 20% shorter cooldowns

Inspiration – 30
+300 vitality, +300 healing power
Vengeful Images Grants retaliation to Phantasms
Phantasmal Healing Phantasms grant regeneration to nearby allies
Phantasmal Strength Phantasms do 15% more damage
Mender’s Purity Remove a condition when you heal
Warden’s Feedback Focus skills reflect projectiles. Reduces recharge of focus skills by 20%
Restorative Illusions Heal a small amount when you shatter illusions

Consumables

Candied Dragon Roll (same as omnomberry ghost but for 20mins instead)
66% Chance to steal life on crit
20mins
+70 precision
+15% bonus experience
With this buff, every 3 crit attacks you deliver you should heal for 350hp, surprisingly effective with a precise build.

Quality Maintenance oil (hey I’m not super rich I aint buying no master oil >:C )
30 minutes
Gain precision equal to 5% of your toughness
Gain precision equal to 3% of your vitality
+10% bonus experience
Gain precision, benefits the previous buff.

haha, yeah i suppose, i tend to spend alot on golems and not that i need gold anymore im currently on about 80g so im running low :C i still keep it for the those really intense situations.

as simple, lets start from this.. imo..
wvw = server/alliance/world vs server/aliance/world
there are/is;
1) Zerg vs Zerg

  • PUGs (Person Unaffiliated with Guild) vs zerg(large scaled)
    - farming
    - leveling
    - achivement titles
    - daily/monthly
    - train/practice/test
    - who run for server benefits
    (competitive or casual)
  • Guilds vs zerg
    - farming
    - leveling
    - achivement titles
    - daily/monthly
    - train/practice/test
    - who run for server benefits
    (competitive or casual)

o Competitive (example Guild Raids)
- orginesed.. (wvw core players, no upskilled, no slackers, minumum item requirements, have missions/goal, and balancing/calculation effectiveness, roles, communications)

(if competitive game looks for vs FAIR competitive its, )
2) GvG (ffs gw2 doesnt have Offical GvG) (anyway http://gw2gvg.com/ unoffical)

i ll focus full mobility and survival.. ll build it for worst scenerio..

its best effective for anti burst, where my role will be initiate the fight, while tanking.. where as i am commander that i would have orginized guild and can select timing for leaps and regroups, build focus on distortations and get tank(take aggro, harras unorginzed them..)i used it long time since i start wvw maybe 8months ago.. make clones before battle start. leap and get inv while your team jump into battle take adv..
