Are mesmers fun? What can they do?
First of all, mesmer is awesome!
It is fun to play imo and you can really confuse guys with your clones. However, mesmer has a pretty high skill cap, so it takes some time to be really good at it.
Mesmers are useful in PVE, but nothing really special. Time warp is a good skill, but everybody can live without it xD
I really like mesmer in structured PVP, it is fun to play and can be really useful to just burst enemies down. It is not particularly supporting your team, that’s why you don’t see many mesmers in high ranked PVP.
I like mesmer most in WvW. It is a very good roaming class and is useful in zergs too. The meta for roaming is a shatter mesmer, this has extreme burst. But I like to play PU condition, which is just awesome because of the survivability and confusing people with clones. Mesmers are good in zergs, but you shouldn’t have too many. The utilities are good, like the skill Veil and Portal. There aren’t many mesmers in zergs lately, so you will always be useful.
So overall, if you like WvW and specifically roaming. Then mesmer is the class for you. PVP and PVE is also really fun, but there mesmer is just an average class.
They are fun to play, hard to play, very hard to master, yet relativly weak compared to other classes. It’s not the best class to start with for a newb, you can screw up much or simply be not useful for your team. But we all have faith that the mesmer gets buffed in the expansion in a few months.
But if you really like Mes, then start with it. Mes is terribly weak and a pain to level without traits. But don’t worry, once you reached lv60, everything’s fine!

It’s been said elsewhere on the forums that mesmer is a utility class. Most of the reasons people want us on a team is not because of something we can do with our weapons, though skill helps, but because of our utilities. In dungeons our primary job is to bring reflects and timewarp – boonstrips and stealth when necessary. Though ANet has been taking away just how much we can reflect, so those instances where it is necessary are fewer.
In open PvE content I think mesmer stands apart from the other classes with the ability to solo difficult situations. In part this is due to clones, as they offer a nice distraction (sometimes). We are a versatile class, but not wholly strong in one area or another. For dungeons you will notice posts for “zerkers only” and sometimes they will tack on “warriors.” Warrior is the meta class for speed running an instance in PvE (that 100 Easies with GS!). However, I recommend learning to play with all of the weapon variations our class offers, it will help you in the long run.
For PvP… we are lackluster. There are two builds that are accepted as the most “fair,” but also require a higher skill threshold (and are glass). If you just want to have some fun and fool around, you can do that, but don’t expect to get to high ranking matches with mesmer and do well. =/ That is just the unfortunate nature of things.
Depending on the server you pick depends on how successful you may be in WvW (this a mixed PvP and PvE environment). If you choose, or have chosen, a server that has a low ranking, you can get away with a glassier build like shatter and do well in WvW (usually). Every other class will give you a hard time, so it will be all about getting the drop on them and bursting them before they can kill you. However, if you’re on a server that is ranked higher then solo roaming will be harder and you will either need a small group or a zerg to run with. Personally, I despise zergs, but recognize them as a necessary evil.
One major thing to keep in mind: conditions are the Achilles heel for mesmers.
Hi guys I am new to GW2,
I like the idea of confusing my enemies with clones, kinda like Leblanc in LoL.
The Portal seems legit, I can transport those golem guys.
I like the two-hander spells they got. What are some other fun/interesting things mesmers can do?
I want to be that class which stands above the rest because of what I bring to the table. Where I’ll be useful in most situations (PVE/PVP). Enlighten me please.
welcome to GW2, here’s where I need to be honest with you:
- Mesmers are utility bots and people expect you to slot skills that benefit them instead of you
- Thieves eat you for breakfast, night and day, 24/7.
- your phantasms and clones are not fooling anyone, all sounds good on paper, but in reality, no real players get fooled often in PvP and WvW.
- you get to die a lot while looking good doing it, Mesmers fashion is 2nd to none compare to other classes.
- in the upcoming HOT expansion, other classes get a new main hand weapon, we get a off hand shield (less new weapon skills).
Dude.. You just went and cried in like four different threads.
I don’t know what kind of Mesmer you play, but it sounds like you really have the most unfun Mesmer ever, and I’m glad my experience has been nothing like yours.

I will say this, I love my mesmer, I love my mesmer so much it is why it hurts so badly when they hurt us. For me mesmer is about a different kind of play, it is about being mobile, being always applying pressure. My experience has taught me that the moment you stop pushing the other guy, the moment you begin to hesitate and look to retreat that is the moment the mesmer dies.
So if you are the kind of person that enjoys trying to get inside the head of the other guy, trying to force an action, then the mesmer is for you. No matter how kitten they may make us, they will never take from us our tools for playing the psychological game better than any other class…

I just started play more in sPvP, unfortunately, this is what I have to look forward to:

sure, sPvP is not all that GW2 has to offer, but it does shed a light on the state of Mesmer, which is in a good place.

I disagree.
What you have to look forward to is forming your own opinion based off YOUR individual experience. If you get killed and end up saying its because “mesmers are so bad right now” then you’re only fooling yourself.
The first thread you linked is complaining about the Celestial meta, which is pushing multiple builds out of competitive play and squeezing shut variety. The second thread is an argument over the same thing: The cele meta.
Buffing Mesmer to give them all the tool to be able to do everything is just… inane. As I said before I really don’t think any individual class is to blame, and I’m actually really against buffing anyone at the moment because I truly don’t think any individual class is the problem. Celestial Amulet is the problem. Yes, we are countered by thieves the way Engis are countered by Necros but your post..

If this is literally all you’re experiencing on a Mesmer, you’re doing something wrong.
(Also, if you’re looking to learn how to rock out on Mes in PvP, and you’re in NA hit me up man. I bet we can change that opinion.)

Mesmer is not nearly as weak as you seem to believe, Rome. I share in Chaos’ cheery optimism here. I understand the frustrations you’re feeling and the place you’re coming from, but bear in mind that once you have a good knowledge of matchups and, Mesmer is very lethal and the best class at fulfilling multiple roles. There are a lot of reasons for its lack of popularity right now but for the most part they only affect organized tournament play. You can do very well with a Mesmer in solo queue with a bit of dedication. In fact I’d argue it’s one of the best solo queue classes.

Well welcome to the Mesmer class! I’m so happy to have you here with us!
As a pvp purist, I will tell you that in low-tier gameplay (which you’re currently at as a new player), Mesmer is VERY strong in pvp. You’re right, the Mesmer class can be very very very confusing to fight against for the majority of players in gw2. This is especially the case when you take into account that the Mesmer has a lot of skills that break the target off of you which helps to confuse you with clones. If you practice and become good quick, you’ll have a lot of success in pvp.
That being said, the higher tier you get, the less… novelty there is about Mesmer gameplay. Good players will know how to counter and manage your attacks. You’ll never see someone stomp the wrong clone again (lol). It then becomes a matter of player skill in which Mesmers typically have a tough time with most classes depending on your build.
Overall, Mesmer is still SUPER fun to play! I’ve played Mesmer exclusively since near launch. I love that Mesmer is the only class that specializes in severely punishing bad gameplay from others. It’s a great feeling knowing that when you beat someone as a Mesmer, it’s because you have more skill than them!
Advice for PvP:
- I suggest you youtube different guides on how to pvp first as this is more important than even knowing your own class. There’s plenty of resources out there. Here’s a start from a friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTxO18JgdRE
- You can play several different Mesmer builds in low tier gameplay and do really well. I say pick out the weapon set you feel most comfortable with then ask around the forums again for builds. Different categories include Phantasm, Lockdown, Shatter and within those categories are even more builds (dps vs condition vs tank vs support etc.)
- Get acquainted with the forums here. We’re a passionate group of people who are always willing to help others. We all have strong personalities, because we’re a bunch of know-it-alls. And yeah, us Mesmers DO know it all!

Those threads are really more about Celestial Amulet than the Mesmer class. Here’s your answer to Cele Engi/Ele:

“Maim The Meta”. You’re welcome.

And now for an honest answer from an everyman:
Are Mesmers fun? Short answer is they can be depending on your playing preference and skill.
PvE: For the new player, Mesmers can seem like you’re fighting with a feather duster until you begin to trait. I would argue no other class in the game requires as much understanding of the nuances of how the game plays than the Mesmer. At mid to late levels you bloom and things become much easier. I find most PvE content easy these days and don’t pay much attention to the Dungeon/Fractal power gamers. If you know your class and have a good group it doesn’t matter what you play, you can succeed.
PvP: I have not honestly played much PvP, but from my arm chair is seems all of ANet’s decision making on the Mesmer comes out of the PvP environment and vocal players there in. This is unfortunate because one size does not fit all. What Mesmers can do in PvP may seem overpowering to some, but the nerfs we’ve received because of PvP gripes have hurt all aspects of the profession. That all said I do know from experience Mesmer has a ridiculously high skill cap to be effective in PvP because…
WvW: I play a lot, and for the general player, in its current state, Mesmer is a terrible profession. It takes a great amount of practice and skill for a Mesmer player to accomplish what many other professions do with two or three lazy clicks. Knowing timing is critical with every Mesmer build, whether PU, interrupt or shatter. Condi is probably the easiest, but they are slow in every aspect of play. Overall though, Mesmer players need to stop fooling themselves into believing this is acceptable and be more honestly vocal about the poor state their profession is in. This is not to say you can’t have fun, but know up front that the moment you start feeling weak or under performing, you are not alone, and it may not be because you are a bad player as much as Mesmer is a very poorly supported profession among the developers.
I don’t want an easy button, but we are in desperate need of some buffs and heavy class tuning to be more attractive to everyone.
