[GUIDE] Lyssa's Grimoire: The Mesmer Handbook
Edit: I got to thinking.. what if the OMFG teachers had the guide link in their sig? I think it’d be a good way for people to see who they can PM questions too, and make it easier for noobs to get info with a couple of clicks. (But yet the proposal feels rather conceited. =[ )
Much appreciated guys, there are still some things that need to be tested, such as:
- AoE Radius of “On Death” traits
- AoE Radius of “Shattered Conditions”
- AoE Radius of Phantasmal Healing
And bit more. Got a huge round of updating/formatting to go through today.. Gawd.(But a few interesting surprises in store). Also, I can send the Word file to anyone who’d like to make any formatting/information edits, or just want the guide in a more printable version.
Oh hey, someone copied the wiki onto this site. That’s useful!
Oh drat. I am exposed!
I figured this would come to people’s minds. The Official Wiki is my direct competition for this guide. All Mesmer info on there should be here, but this guide will definitely have more information than the Wiki (I think it already does.)
I did happen to see your post history though, you seem real quick to cut people down for little to no reason… That’s not cool, why do that man?

(edited by Chaos Archangel.5071)
This guide does have a lot of information from the wiki but the wiki doesn’t teach you any of the unique uses for a skill which is incredibly important because almost all of the Mesmer skills have multiple ways to use them. It takes a lot of raw data, some of which was learned by players on the forums and not from the wiki, and outputs it into a concise guide (as concise as you can be with a class like ours.)
The wiki is a useful source for information, and I use it in my guide too, does that make i t obsolete?.
Your guide is simply all a new mesmer could ask for and more. It is a great piece of help and commitment.
Some people have just a hard time to say “thank you”, ’cause they are not able to produce anything of value by themselves.

I was being serious about copying the wiki. It’s blocked at work.
Awesome job. Maybe i missed it. Im reading this on my iphone, but are you leaving a spot for the Downed State. Just to cover everything.
EDIT: Also, you do mention that GS Spatial Surge and Scepter Confusing Images can hit multiple targets. I’d suggest that you highlight that both these attacks are “piercing” attacks and will damage thru blocks. New Players may not know that.

Well kitten sorry to read your post wrong. Rejoice! A comprehensive non-block guide!
Thanks really enjoyed reading the guide and found it very helpful! I left gw2 a while back due to reaching lvl 80 solo and not finding a guild or any friendly/helpful people to play with.
I decided to come back and started a mesmer which I’ve had fun with so far (lvl 40) now I’ve got back into the swing of the game this guide has helped me look deeper into the prof rather than aimless running about and not thinking too much about what skills/traits etc to use!
Big thumbs up and thanks for the time and effort you put into this!

You are not correct. Piercing means they simply pierce through multiple targets. That is not the same thing as ‘unblockable’, which is a fact that can be found on mirror blade if you look.
Maybe I am wrong, but I seem to remember using Confusing Images thru a block. Could it be that its channeled? That I start the cast and the block goes up and I still see numbers pop up?
The wiki doesnt describe piercing to penetrate blocks, but I could swear it does. I’m not as young as most of you, so it could be mental degradation.
I can asure you that Confusing Images do not go through block, as I have as lately as today experienced it being blocked
@nilgoow: Oh, my bad!
@Pyro: Totally forgot Mirror Blade is unblock/reflectable
@sammann: Happy to help man. Why don’t ya join us in the Official Mes Forum Guild?

@Azo: I have the skill coefficients for every Mesmer skill.
Phantasms, utilities, and traits that deal damage do not obey the normal damage calculation. I’m still trying to work out exactly what they do.
yes i ll open topic as Azo `s scratch pad on forum,, i ll copy/paste.. from my guild page.. check if they are accurate for co-efficients.. anyway i dont need them anymore cuz i dont play anymore :P <3 A-Net with their name of GUILD WARS, where has no gvg and they kill our sandbox, un offical gvg matches with their …….. orbs..(maybe we could do naked raid for fun) anyway i am so regretfull to give time this game to wait some enjoyable competitive team matches, gvgs where tpvp is not enough, bored already(where they make it casual example)put our tickets to mouth and qualify points.. maybe i am the last alone who still slaaccking in game where all competitive players are already left.. anyway this game is for fun isnt it.. play as what ever u wish to like bla bla as a net says..

Wow this is really amazing. The amount of effort is incredible and is very helpful for honestly anyone. Its an summary of the entire mesmer class and more. +1 for this, I hope this get stickied, it deserves to be.
Retired.
Chaos, again, great piece of work. This is truly amazing, really appreciate your effort.
Master of Manipulation : Some editing error there, check it
Retaliatory Shield: Also very very useful in PU build since it proc with aegis
Masterful Reflection: Used in Triforce build as a core
p.s. Mesmer forum lucky to have you, really really good work.
Awesome job mate, I’ll defintly advise new mesmers asking abiout the class to check this out. A couple of things to note:
- Master of Manipulation description seems incorrect
- Check formatting for greatsword details
- Might want to mention glarmor tooltips is incorrect
- Mirror of anguish doesn’t affect Thieves Basilisk Venom
- Medic’s feedback has a short feedback duration, not the full skill. Supposibly fixed soon.
- Pistoler 100% finisher when traited is supposibly a bug
- Domination 25 point trait is supposibly bugged and lowers your damage to active targets
- The sword 3 first part of the chain does do a little damage which can break stealth, careful with your wording
May want to add something about summoning phantasms in stealth… not sure if your going to add a section for tips and less known tricks.
- John Smith
Much appreciated! Will fix asap.

Just a small suggestion maybe have integrated with each section or as a glossary maybe have the abbreviations I.e iDuelist, illusionary duelist. Not all newcomers know these and in other topics people use a lot of abbreviations that are second nature to them but not to newbies?
Possible corrections?
SCEPTER
Scepter is the not-as-good main hand alternative to the sword. While it lack’s the sword’s DPS, mobility, and defensive capabilities, it is capable of providing high condition damage, spawning clones off its auto, and attacking at range.
PROS- Superior for Condition Dmg builds / The only ranged 1h weapon (900 range)/ Rapid clone production
CONS- Lousy power damage / Lousy defense
1) Ether Bolt/Ether Blast/ Ether Clone – The Scepter auto chain is … lacking. While it provides better damage than the staff, it still falls short of the 1h & 2h swords. On the bright side.. the third hit -though painfully slow- spawns a clone.
Though it’s a ranged attack, the auto chain is more effective the closer you are to your opponent, this is because the next part of the chain activates after the previous bolt hits.
You can delay casting the third part of the chain for up to around 3 seconds. (Example: Scepter auto 1, auto 2, summon phantasm, auto 3) If you’re in combat, you can preemptively swing the first two parts of the autoattack out so you’ll launch the third immedietly.
In or out of combat, if you are out of range of your target, you can preemptively swing the first two parts of the auto attack and then when in range (and within the 3 sec delay), use the third auto attack to summon a clone on your target immediately.
Arcane Thievery (45- 36 sec CD) Arcane Thievery, like a bad relationship, steals 3 boons from an opponent while generously replacing them 3 of your conditions instead. The skill can make you laugh or cry. It literally throws the opponent’s conditions back on them, using their own condition damage to calculate, er, damage. It’s also great for stealing boons from some bosses and player opponents (Warrior, Engineer, Necro for example). Arcane Thievery is not unblockable, and thus affected by Aegis, Blinds, evades, invulns, range, and line of sight making it very dangerous as a build’s lone form of condition removal.
I thought they patched Arcane Thievery so that it is not blockable anymore. Wiki also says unblockable. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Arcane_Thievery

Wow, way to just bash on the scepter. The “not-as-good” main hand? Now that isn’t even close to true to evaluating its abilities. DPS is both physical and condition damage, so DPS wise it matches the sword just by a different means. When it comes to defensive capabilities, compared to the swords 2.5 secs of evade, it is weaker but it provides a block that not only negates the damage but inflicts a condition. Mobility wise you are right, the sword is better but with how buggy iLeap is you could argue that point as well.
I honestly think scepter has one of the best defensive abilities for three reasons
1. It’s an active defense, meaning you decide how/when to use it and how well you use it is determined by how “good” you are.
2. It’s an offensive action as well because of how powerful torment is.
3. Even if they notice your stance (quite distinctive on Asura at least) and don’t attack you because they don’t wanna proc the block, the skill still gave you a 2 second breather.
All of this can of course be applied to sword off-hand but we are talking main-hand right now ^^
I agree that I should’ve been more objective in the Scepter’s overview, and will definitely be tweaking that (and that’s also a good point about the DPS. Scepter’s Torment + Confuse Ray may infact match DPS of Sword. Testers!?! Halp! )
But the Scepter’s defense is one of the lousiest on Mesmer weaponry. The counter is much better as a damage/control ability.
The block only blocks one attack and leave you open during the coutner attack. Compare that to
-Torch (stealth)
- Focus (Curtain/Warden)
- Sword (Blurred Awesome)
- Staff (Phase Retreat Chaos Storm/Armor)
…and it falls short to all but the Greatsword.
(Oh man. What a wonderful round of I’ve got to make tonight. /Weeps)
@Sammann: It was there! I swear it was in the Key on the intro page. I gotta check the world file, some things seem to have gotten cut off.

That was awesome :o.
When you resevred the posts, I spent like half an hour refreshing and reading what you had to say ^__^. But when you finally started posting the actual guide, someone came in and made me get to work :’( (I was actually staring at my phone like a zombie .__.)
Anyway, I just read it, and it was more than worth the wait ^__^.
I also put the link in my signature :D

I gotta say … this is freakin SWEET.
Other 80s: Any but Warrior
This is awesome, needs to be stikeed!!!!!
I recommend we start linking the “Know your skills” post for each skill. I personally think it is a great concept since we have so many people here who have a lot of different play styles and skill preferences.
@Deathcon: I definitely agree.
Got some major revisions on the way including redoing the Scepter section, inserting the Reflection section, inserting the “theorycrafting your Mesmer,” and a few traits will get edited(such as Retaliatory shield and how it synergizes really well with Mimic) those with builds centered around them will have links to said builds if I can find them. Oh.. and more in-depth on Portal.
As for damage coefficients, I’ll try and add them to the corresponding skills (as well as a list of most damaging to least damaging skills).
At you Math people, do we agree that Azo’s scratchpad has accurate info on this? (fishing through and rewriting some of that will be … fun -_- )

When I am not roaming I’m doing GvG whats up?
Im curious about a few GvG things..
- What role do you find yourself playing?
- How big do the matches tend to be?
- In your experience, how many Mesmer are usually in a team?
- What do you think are the best weapons/skills and why?
- What advice would you have for a Mesmer new to GvG?

*I find myself going a Glamour build more often then not. But since they guted BB I usually don’t take it and just run with Dazzling Glamours and Confusion enchantments. I used a lot for my veils and portals and often switch skills off my utilities bar when I need different skills. Here is the basics of the build
http://tinyurl.com/mgckjkb
*Usually around 25v25 but it depends of course on what time it is.
*My guild has an unusually large amount of Mesmers so we have about 4-5 at any point in GvG. However they do not run the same build I do even though I have tried to convince them to. They run bunker builds but still provide portals and veils and such, just without the added benefits.
*Anything with a reflect, traited focus and feedback. These destroy zergs like no tomorrow and not to mention if your fighting on a wall you can weaken a zerg by pulling some members off. I take Medics Feedback solely for the free feedback bubbles and that skill is wonderful in GvG. The blinds created by the glamour fields are really nice when the enemy is charging you. But down a veil in front of THEM and watch as all there initial attacks miss.
*Be as tanky as you can. I used to just run Rabid with this glamour build but since Dire came out I never do that anymore. The extra life and armor are life savers in large engagements especially when your being asked to portal and veil constantly. Your used a lot for your utility but never be afraid to think outside the box. For instance you could place both your portals at the gate of a tower and as everyone runes in they will get blinded and confused, which is handy. Our greatest skill in WvW is what YOU bring to the fight not the skills you have on your utility bar.
EDIT: I know that is a lot but I feel like this was the only way I could answer these questions fully.
(edited by Deathcon.5903)
Deathcon, just one quiestion,
How Veil exactly works with Dazzling Glamours? Cause in the wiki it says that only applies blind one time and only to enemies which are inside the glamour skill. This is easily understandable for aoe glamours, but not that much for veil.
And Chaos, as Deathcon said, best mesmer build for GvG is still a glamour one. Thanks to that incredible melee/AoE/combo train meta of GvG, mesmers are relegated only to support via glamours or boon/condition removal from shatters.
Here’s is a thread of this forum where people talk about mesmers viability in GvG. You can take ideas from it, and also ask them more doubts.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Why-would-u-take-Mesmers-in-your-GvG-mathes
And these are some builds I have in mind. The first is the one I would run, focusing almost on glamours.
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNArdWlwzqqHVTsGa9IhJFBH5new8l3cSKKNqB
The second works more with shatters. You are able to remove boons/condis and apply a lot of aoe vulnerability.

(edited by Ansau.7326)
Hey Ansau I just read that and tbh I usually place it right at the feet of the charging zerg so I see it hit a few of them but I was just assuming whoever would walk through would get the effect, but that is something that needs to be tested now that I have read the wiki page.
Concerning your builds I would most likely switch over to the traits of the first one if Dazzling glamours doesn’t work how I thought it did but I don’t recommend shattering unless the boon ripping wipes off Retaliation before it triggers.
I’m literally just waiting to see what Anet does with mantras this patch.
@Deathcon: That was GREAT! How long have you been involved with GvG?
@Ansau: Much appreciated man. I checked that thread but it seemed so defeatist that I couldn’t find much useful info there.
@Lyndis: Mantra of Resolve and Concentration will become AoE.
Btw, anyone have any links to any videos that they feel should most definitely be in the guide?

This is gonna come off as self promotional, but I have a video up on my channel illustrating a “fun” use of Temporal Curtain if it is those kind of videos you mean :p
I have been doing GvG since I got my Mesmer to 80, which is my only 80 class. So about 3-4 months now.
I’m literally just waiting to see what Anet does with mantras this patch.
I believe Resolve and Concentration are both AOE now., if the leak is to be believed. It’s more of a PvE group support buff than a PvP thing mostly.
Definitely gonna be adding the Mesmerized podcast, and should have all the under construction sections filled out by this weekend.
@Lahel: Totally gonna add that hilarious video. I love doing that on Skyhammer.

Go for it Chaos, I am actually going to try and do more GvG or at least Zerg running to get an even better feel for it since we have so few who choose to do that.
When iMage is traited with Illusionary Conflagration (Torch skills remove conditions), it acts like an iDisenchanter, procs confusion/retaliation PLUS remove all conditions on ally intantly.
I’m not 100% sure of this, because bounces aren’t easy to test. However, this would explain why “Illusionary Conflagration” says “remove conditionS” and not “remove one condition”.
p.s. sorry for my bad english.
p.s.2 I would appreciate if anyone could test and further.
I’m around 98% sure it only removes one condition per bounce.. but I’ve so rarely used it I can’t say for certain.

It removes 1 condition per bounce, half of what the disenchanter does.
Btw, the link in the opening post links to the wrong post in regards to the leveling guide.
Otherwise, things look good. ^^
