I do think people are overreacting a little bit here. Really, the changes aren’t that bad. You can still put that Berserker up on the wall, you just need LoS now. Portal bombing is still possible, you just need to wait an extra thirty seconds assuming your Portal is even on cool down to begin with. And Moa still makes the enemy completely useless for 10 seconds, only now they are (very slightly) less useless.

The Berserker damage nerf does really suck though. Any situation where the already awful Mesmer AoE is nerfed really sucks. I truly hope that this wasn’t intended.

Right now I’m just glad Time Warp wasn’t touched.

People are overreacting as usual.

The Phantasm LOS and Blind/Invulnerability nerf actually only nerfed a few Phantasms, in particular Berserker; because most other Phantasms already require LOS and are already negated by Blind/Invulnerability even before this patch.

except berserker was the only option mesmers had to contributing to a seige.

you know something is kittened up with the class when a bug fix to a single skill completely destroys a mesmers abilities when attacking in wvw.

I know, although it actually isn’t impossible to conjure LOS requiring Phantasms on walls: I’ve managed to cast Warden up there many times, dealing AoE damage and watching fools shoot themselves. It does fail sometimes for no apparent reason (as sometimes you can’t tell if someone is in LOS of your character or not), but it is far from impossible.

you managed to summon warden up there because they were standing on the little lip at the edge, in which case anything could hit them.

And what’s wrong with that? Defensive fortifications are meant to protect whoever’s inside, I think it’s quite reasonable for defenders to be vulnerable if they try to get a better shot.

Except they don’t ever actually have to stand on the lip to shoot down.

Has anyone else noticed that iZerker can now miss? I mean totally miss.

I was testing out the changes in the pvp lobby against the nice robots that stand still. They dont dodge — they dont do anything except dutifully await their own death.

Many times I cast iZerker and I noticed it would attack — go flying through the robot(s) and do absolutely nothing. No damage. No zeroes no anything. It would totally miss. Then, I would just sit there and watch the zerker recharge and fight again. The results were inconsistent. He’d fly through and get a 600 hit. Then another total miss, then a 5K hit. Sometimes a 1.2K hit.

Every time I repeated the tests there were always total misses.

I experienced it against Svanir. I opened with zerker just to see — I was all alone and svanir was not engaged. TOTAL miss. Zerker flew through him and didn’t do anything. No debuff no damage no nothing. Of course then my auto attack hit and he was all over me. Took a 2nd pass of the zerker to actually hit him. But it did very little damage.

Anyone else seeing this?

You can still put that Berserker up on the wall, you just need LoS now.

So they enemy needs to be over the border lip, where he can be hit without the Berserker anways. And now you cannot hit Archer NPCs on walls anymore (but they can hit you) or any siege weaponry. And if target was not in LoS you will get the Berserker skill in CD even if it wasn’t triggered. This is really a serious nerf.

I was never a fan of participating in sieges anyways…

However as for the LoS requirement, as many people are aware, the LoS is terribly buggy. Not only do you get the obstructed message when you seemingly have a nice clear shot, but just playing around with it I am still able to fire off that iBeserker without [real] LoS, such as summoning a iBeserker with a wall between myself and my target sometimes… it is just dependent on whatever the buggy game considers to be LoS… and it just means that the Mesmer skill cap is being raised even higher, because you need to understand even more of the strange behaviour the game has.

Unkittening unbelievable. I’m demanding that all class if blind or if they attacking one invulnerable target get’s their skill under cooldown. Especially channeled skill and AoE type shouldn’t keep going on while under those effect.

Pretty sure that all professions abilities go on cooldown when they cast them while blinded, or a target is invuln.

This is true at least for Necro, Warrior, and Ranger.

Preety sure those skills dont have an HP Bar associated with them, nor a travel distance at the speed of a slug nor do they prevent defensive measures to be activated.

Illusion/clone mechanics keeps getting slapped, because despite having a cool concept, the implementation was crappy as kitten.

Plenty of my abilities on these other classes have long travel time issues, and get obstructed all the time.

Obvious bug is fixed, yet (shockingly) people still cry.

How is it an obvious bug?
1 is an attack that targets an enemy and needs to hit, so you need a LoS.
The other is a spectral being that can move, stays alive and has it’s own target system. So the mesmer can summon a clone/phantasm even if he can’t see the target. It’s the clone that will start searching for the target and the clone that should miss when blinded.

Really what is left of mesmer in PvE if our only decent damage output gets nerfed. Let’s all go mantra support build that has 0 damage output!

I simply don’t understand most of these changes. Moa Morph being changed to work underwater isn’t even an improvement, except in PvP, as nearly every mesmer in PvE will use Time Warp or Mass Invis anyway. And what does “less frustrating” even mean for a skill that’s by design meant to be frustrating?

The line of sight issue raises even more questions: If we’re specialized at mental and physical manipulation, making people see and feel things that aren’t really there, and so on, why do we need to be able to see our target in the first place? Shouldn’t just being aware of the target’s presence (actually having a target) be enough for us to lock on and create an illusion? For that matter, why are illusions unable to walk through walls? They’re not really there, little more than a figment of someone’s imagination.

The Portal recharge is just…odd. I really can’t think of any reason for this one. The only things an additional 30 seconds does is make it less frequent (not that it gets used THAT often), or make it more inconvenient to swap out the skill for something actually useful. Even more odd is that the skill itself wasn’t fixed to fit with the tooltip, or vice versa. It still lasts at most 12 seconds, but says 20 on the tooltip.

Illusion conjuring has been reduced to basic attack status (Dodge, Block, Evade, Blind, Obstructed, or Invulnerability counter them) with a full recharge if the skill fails, and no indicator if the target is obstructed 90% of the time. Area attacks are virtually non-existent for the class as a whole. Berserkers, Wardens, Chaos Storm, Blurred Frenzy and shatters are all we get, and out of those, only Chaos Storm is even remotely reliable, but absurdly weak as an offensive area attack.

I have to question what ANet’s vision of the mesmer profession really is, because at this point it seems they don’t really know. We’re clearly not the best at any particular role, but getting progressively weaker with each “balance fix.” What are mesmers supposed to do?

Mmm, the ability to turn someone in tuna makes me feel rly goooood~ Not. Like that somehow masks the constant nerfing of mesmer. So I was chasing someone and a tiny tree was in the way. And that tiny tree stopped me from summoning a phantasm.

It really feels like Anet is just kowtowing to the PvP masses whenever they feel like they’ve been slighted. Moa was changed to make it easier on the poor people we have to fight. No form of AoE, damage output nerfed… Thanks… seems everyone hates the mesmer now.

Just playing WvW . I was standing at the bottom of a short set of stairs. Elementalist standing at the top of stairs. tried to summon Beserker, and guess what “Obstructed”. Now he or she was clearly in my line of site, but thanks to your LoS nerf I guess if any player has height advantage my Phantasims will be obstructed.

Thanks for making my Mezmer worthless in WvW, which is the only reason I still play your game.

This. Not only the nerfs to phantasms made us almost useless in WvW but Phantasmal Berseker is now broken after this patch. This is such a huge hit after a series of nerfs for Mesmer in the past that even for a hardcore player like myself (over 1100 hours clocked), I’m feeling unmotivated to play anything since the patch. I was really excited about this patch and for the new event. I’ve always believed that Anet will make the right judgements and making the correct balance changes. I’ve had good faith in Anet for many years since GW1. However, I’m really not sure where I should be going from now on. Re-roll another profession? I think not. I’ve already got star exploration on my Mesmer and have done every possible DEs in every zone without skipping and with exceptions of the broken ones. I’ve no interest in grinding out the same progression I’ve made in the past 2 month. I’ve spent real life cash on gems to unlock all inventory slots on my Mesmer (now to think of it may be the worst decision I’ve ever made). Such bad changes without compensating for our most significant weakness – AoE, several other skill and trait bugs kept getting pushed back, and possibly unintentional changes to Berserker is just to rub salt into the wound. At this point I wish there is an option for us to sell gems for real life money like in D3. I’m seriously thinking about giving up GW2, even though I love my Mesmer and the Guild Wars universe.

I don’t think you’ve identified any discrepancies between what happens for the Mesmer and what happens with other professions.

Simple is fact that not all mesmer builds rely on illusion for doing dmg but actually rely on the illusion being out and able to shatter. They way it worked before was if say someone evaded your illusion cast the dmg was negated but still had your illusion out(Which is way whole mesmer class was made to have illusion out for x number of abilities) So basically they just made it worse for use to realy on illusion shatter builds. It would be like someone casting blind on a necro and a minion would go poof on them. Or blind on a ranger and his pet went poof(if in a alternate reality and pets actually were useful in pvp)

It is outrageous.

The inability to summon illusions when it does not connect is quite possibly crippling to the class.

This “patch” was the biggest pile of bs in a while. Portal CD should not have been increased, it is used for many things besides WvW and waiting for a min to cool down was long enough, 1 min 30 is obnoxious. Second, Phantasm LOS is bs, these die instantly. Doing this only makes us useless not only in WvW but in dungeons as well. This needs to be fixed back to prepatch or at least be reworked and reasonable.
Basically, ANET you screwed up big on this one and right before an expansion too. Your losing your community.

Those three nerfs I thought were pretty fair – being able to cast phantasms through doors was a bit daft. Now at least I have to go to the battlements like everyone else – and unless the place is blanketed with AoEs it’s not a big problem.

Moa/tuna form is still going to throw people off. That’s the main purpose, not to render them completely worthless for a few seconds but to break their game plan.

Portal I thought needed some adjustments, but adding 30 seconds to the cooldown isn’t going to change anything. Limiting uses to 5 would have been more sensible. That would do nothing to fort infiltration – you just send five mesmers through for recursive portal madness and get 30 people in there within seconds – but it would slow down portal bombing.

“Illusionary Duelist, Phantasmal Swordsman, Phantasmal Mage, Phantasmal Defender, Phantasmal Disenchanter, Phantasmal Rogue, Phantasmal Warlock, Illusionary Mariner, Illusionary Whaler, Phantasmal Berserker, and Phantasmal Warden: These skills must now be cast in line-of-sight of the target. These skills now behave as normal attacks that the mesmer must connect in order to summon the phantasm, and they will fail if the mesmer is blind or the ability is cast on an invulnerable target.

I suspect most of us saw this coming, but still, it removes one unique utility feature we had. IMO this wasn’t needed due to the relative ease of destroying any of our illusions. Definitely a severe nerf. I wonder if this means summons can also be dodged, etc. if they are going to take out the utility and require these skills to behave like all other weapon attacks, then I think we should get sigil bonuses on them as well."

That’s fairly harsh, but I guess i can see the reasoning behind it.

Again, they did this the wrong way and now the class absolutely needs a rewrite, not just a rebalancing, a reconstruction of its most basic mechanics to offset the fact that their illusions are no longer effective outside of open area close range for LONG term fighting.

The issue here is that summoning illusions that can be LoSed away on a longer cooldown means that the longer cooldowns they implimented before in previous patches are now overcompensating the problem.

Those who actually play PvE are chafing a lot more due to this than they need to be, and the resulting nerfs to Berserker and Mage output has hurt us even more in a department we’re already struggeling in.

Again, if this is the path they are taking – they need to remake the class to compensate so it actually functions in this enviroment.

I would not be opposed to a projectile-based illusion that summoned once, was completely immortal, attacked for incoming damage, then disipated if our illusion skills were based around it.

Right now, they’re trying to skirt the line of Mesmer’s illusions between spells and pets and it’s really not working as they are receiving the weaknesses of both and the benefits of neither.

The portal changes were incredibly pointless. A zerg typically has 3 or 4 mesmers, an extra 30 sec CD changes nothing. It does however mean PvE mesmers and their parties may have to sit around and sing campfire songs while they wait for the CD when leveraging it. Making the portal die after say, 5 uses would’ve resolved this

As for removing our last ability that can hit guys on top of walls, I ask Arenanet: “What do you propose we do in WvW? – Throw insults?”

This is actually a very good suggestion and it doesn’t hurt the PvE party that consists up to max 5 players. It will also eliminate the portal bomb tactic and the culling issue in WvW by limiting the number of maximum portal uses to ~5 or 10 before the portal dissipates. Increasing the cool down doesn’t really solve the problem but only prolong the current relative issues that it has.

#2. As for the phantasms nerfs, I am too DEEPLY saddened by this change. I’m afraid Mesmers will bring little to no benefit in bringing suppression firepower when helping the team capturing a tower/keep/castle. Severe lack of decent AoE and slow maneuverability are two of our most significant weaknesses. Outside of WvW, we’re even going to have a harder time in making the “tag” count in comparison to Elementalists and Rangers who have access to skills like Fire Storm and Barrage. The nerfs on top of what this profession lacks the most – AoE is the least thing I’d expect to have happened. I have well over 1100 hours clocked on my Mesmers to know very well of our strengths and weaknesses. I have strong believes in Arena Net to make the right judgements and make changes in the most balanced way. After this patch, I’m not so certain if these changes are indeed balanced in helping what Mesmers lack the most – AoE. This change is a relative negative impact to the overall effectiveness of phantasm summoning skills in comparison to what other professions can bring to the table.

I’ve invested too much time in Mesmer that I do not want to repeat the same process of each progression again on a new profession. During the beta, I had my heart set on Mesmer because it’s the most interesting profession out of the typical warrior, caster, summoner, and rouge type of classes that I’ve played for many several years from other games and including GW1. If I had known Mesmer will be hated so much by the community along with thief being the #1 most controversial profession, I’d not have chose this path. “if you really hate MMOs, you should really check out Guild Wars 2”. This is the main reason why I really hate MMOs in general because of the constant nerfs and balanced changes from one’s perspective. By now I’ve really learned the lesson of not to buy any MMOs on release but rather at least 3-6 month later to save myself from a lot of griefing over the long excruciating process.

Completely agree. I love Mesmers the most out of any other class. But these constant nerfs make it really hard to play this class. It was already hard to “tag” mobs or invaders in WvW on my Mes, now it’s near impossible.
Summon illusion! Woops, just got blinded, 20-30 second cooldown. Awesome.

That LoS nerf is also idiotic. I’ve already had many occasions now where I saw an enemy clear as day, but got the ‘obstructed’ message for some reason, making my illusions go into full cooldown without any benefit.

I’m really starting to hate MMOs because of these kind of changes, it happens all the time. Guess I’ll just go play on my Warrior for a while then, or quit, I dunno, Mesmer was the only fun profession for me to play, but now they are getting less fun to play with every patch.

The bottom line is that the changes to illusions will in reality generally make illusion builds unpleasant/frustrating to use, reducing play-style options for Mesmers.

It is indeed NOT FUN to try and summon an illusion resulting into nothing due to blind, or buggy LoS.

The portal nerf should have been something like “maximun number of portal uses reduced to 5”.
It will still be abused in wvwvw porting massive zergs instantly, all this change did was make jumping puzzles less forgivable for us.

I was expecting some nerfs to our surviability and damage department, in that way I am happy with this patch, but thieves are still murder machines in pvp.

If you do that you basicly render the complete skill useless.

Actually if that suggestion of change gets implemented, it will still be useful in its “rightful manner” and will also address the problem with portal bombing and culling issue that’s happening in WvW. In sPvP, tPvP and PvE, this suggestion will not negatively effect those aspects of the game. Increasing the cool down will NOT address the portal issue at its core that people have raised about AND it will negatively effect its actual usefulness in areas outside of WvW which is the primary source for raising portal concerns.

To be honest if mesmers when blinded, try summon their adds and have to take a full cool down, then blinds on Rangers when they switch pets should fail to switch and go onto full cool down as well. Same for necros summoning.

People will find that unacceptable, but thats the point isnt it (btw I have a Ranger and Necro too).

To my knowledge, no dev has ever come down from their ivory tower to address us on a class issue. They frequently discuss potential “rebalance of mesmers” in the PvP and other class forums though when people whine we need nerfing.

It seems like their first priority for making guild wars “Is it fun” has gone out of the window now.
Yes it was fun to do a castle siege, i had something to do, troll some people on the walls with berserker, i wouldn’t be downing any unless they had like 10% hp left.
Now i’m left running supplies.
The only damaging thing we have left are a feedback bubble with confusion glamour traits to fight someone on a wall, this however needs you to be traited specifically in this way to have anything viable to bring to a siege.
Is it fun? sieging the gates feels more like a chore now.

Since apparently Phantasms are now attacks, not summons, how about we take their HP bar. Other attacks can only be blocked / dodged / blinded, but not physically attacked! Seems only fair to go the full distance and make Phantasms the same, right?
