In your latest video you said you moved some trait points around, could you please outline the changes and why you went with them. Also why the switch away from using staff as your second weapon set? would you still run staff solo and not in a group?

Also ty for the videos, they are great to watch. Would love to see one you narrate the fights with what your thinking/doing in each. I keep rolling it back to watch your skill bar and see the order you do things lol

I guess you just went straight posting your vídeos with “I’ll show you all that scepter and torch can be AWESOME” since everyone Always dismiss those weapons.

I surely will play more around with scepter now… I was amazed at how you managed to crit really high with its #1, your iSwordsman and everything else hit’s like a mad truck too, really impressive.
I really have to stop being lazy and build my armor and trinkets to do this kind of damage haha, keep up the incredible work, it’s much appreciated!

I can’t recall exactly what I was running in the video, probably just put 10 into dom out of chaos to pick up empowered illusion trait. I move stuff around almost every day just for kicks. I moved away from staff and wanted to pick up a unique weapon set. I would recommend staff though for group play. I’ll add some narration and thought process in my next video to break everything down. Thanks for the suggestion!

You got it bro, people come to me and say that this or that is weak, and I just try to see for myself. Scepter is sick man. Sword is sick. Staff.. is sick. Pistol? Sick. Torch? Yup.. sick… I think it’s fun to give everything a shot. Keeps me sharp, and it breaks up the monotony of one play-style. Yeah once you get your armor and trinkets lined out, you’re there man.

I’ve been using the Personal Shatter version of your build for a while now, having already been running something like it before I find your thread. It’s been a big help to see how you do things. I don’t quite have your survivability yet, though I definitely have more work to do at getting more skilled. xD

Still, I learned a lot and got some good gearing tips, which is what I really needed. Thanks!

This is a great guide and I play similar build setup! I thought I was the oddball when I went with knight’s armor but it help give extra survivability and power. I think the other gear I may consider is rabid for more condition damage. I like how you show the usefulness of the torch.

No, you are not an oddball… I’m right there with you brother. Rabid gear would be another strong choice for our play-style, and I’m glad we are in agreement.

Update – [02/05/13] Close quarters, 4vME. I always highlight the survivablility of the mesmer, this time lets look at standing your ground, not running, and just doing work.

Awesome man. I see you’ve incorporated some of the retaliation buffs of the focus. I switched to focus and I literally had players running away from me because they didn’t know how to handle it after a few tries. I’m a big fan, keep it up!

I really do prefer the torch but I needed to show some focus stuff for a change of pace. Misdirection is huge while controlling a mesmer, glad you are getting a kick out of this stuff. I appreciate it.

My mes turned 80 last week or so and I popped her cherry in WvW last night. Got a cond dmg build that I’ve been researching for weeks and actually had a few running from me.
Of course I got hosed quite a few times…nasty thieves!

My I ask a nubsauce question tho…how do you get that cond removal from focus?

Temporal Curtain is a light field. Any projectile or whirl finisher will remove conditions. This is especially potent if your warden ends up in the field.

Yeah, I love torch too because I’m in love with invis, but I just can’t decide between OH sword or focus when I put the torch down. The swordsman is such a great harasser, but dat curtain! It’s pure awesome, and you have mastered it, man. Great work there, and awesome vid as usual.

I thought so…I’ve been messing around in PvE using different combo’s just to see what I can do.

Giving up the staff is a big decision! I just found myself to be on the offensive more and more, and having a list of four weapon skills to choose from was pretty cool too. :P

I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong but I’m having trouble actually doing enough damage to take people down in a timely manner. My survival skills seem ok – I can use dodges, stealth and combo fields to put up retaliation and escape if needed. I’m hovering around 15.5-16k HP, 2800 armor and with food and oil, about 48% crit chance with 66-70% crit damage. I don’t have access to Fractal gear yet though.

Maybe it’s just more practice needed. Very enjoyable though.

Great video (2/5). I’m not sure how many aspiring mesmers caught your use of Into the Void to interrupt would-be helpers while you stomped their friend. Glad to see I’m not the only one using the Scepter/Sword combo.

Why main stat toughness rather than say, power? Because you switched out some stats on armor and now want to add toughness back? For myself I was leaning more toward the one that is main stat power, then prec and crit damage.

What build are you running in your most recent video? It seems like a strange hybrid between a shatter build and phantasm focused. You’ve got deceptive evasion, but you tend not to shatter much, and your phantasms chunk people for a ton of damage.

Also, something you might want to keep in mind when running with the focus: Whenever you lay down temporal curtain, try to do the double leap combo with sword on it. Since you are getting hit a decent amount, and since that combo gets a clone with retaliation too, it just adds to the damage that you output with pretty much no downside.

I like to keep my ascended gear all P/T/Crit damage, because it offers so much of it, and is the only way to combine said stats on one piece of gear. If I need to add more offense or defense I can do that by modifying armor stats (with much less of a headache)

Added a video for any staff users, Just messing around and having some fun!

I think you’re videos are great and they’ve encouraged me to try lots of different play styles. I was running GS + Sword/Focus for a long time, but I ended up trying out Staff + Sceptre/Focus for a while and it was pretty good. I was running it with mostly carrion gear and a little rabid so I could put out some mean confuse ticks. It just didn’t seem quite right for me though. I switched to a 20/20/0/0/30 Sceptre/Focus + Sword/Torch for a while and I liked it ok.

Now I’m running a 0/20/0/20/30 with Sceptre/Sword + Sword/Focus. This lets me get Mender’s Purity and trait for either Sceptre or Focus (it’s set to Sceptre right now). I’m wearing knight’s gear and a mix of carrion and rabid jewelry. This gives me about 20k hp and decent toughness. If I get a 5 stack of confuse up from my sceptre 3 it hits pretty hard and I still have power for my abilities to hit fairly hard. It’s just the auto attacks from sceptre leaves something to be desired.

What do you think about these traits I’m using? I was also thinking about trying 0/25/15/0/30 to get clones give confusion on death from dueling and the regen/protection and clones do random condition on death from chaos.

The biggest problem I have will all of these non GS builds I’ve been using is that people just run away from me. I’ve got my blink and my curtain to cripple/pull them, but other than that they just wave and walk away. It’s really frustrating sometimes, maybe I’m just spoiled with the GS range and the crip from the iZerker.

I wouldn’t fret too much over the trait lines… just find one that fits you’re play-style, and be certain that it synergizes with what you are trying to accomplish. I would recommend just setting up a trait line, playing with it for 2 or 3 days, then trying something else. Eventually you hit that “sweet spot” for your personal tastes. I love seeing these unique builds and it really makes the game more exciting and enjoyable to play.

With that curtain and sword 3 leap you should be able to handle runners fairly well… If not you can do what Andro told me to do and that was wave at them when they run and go right for their efeelings… it’s op.

Just save that blink or phase retreat to get out of the puddle and be wary of their supply crate elite.

No seriously, this buff to The Prestige is so good. Makes it less clunky and now you can actually dodge roll and do other things and not interrupt your stealth or aoe burn proc now.

Now if only I could find a better torch skin. Using “Ambrosia” for my focus skin makes me lean a little more toward having my beer mug focus instead of the torch "/

Digging the hell out of the torch right now (cd bug aside). That added dps from the blast finisher -always- happening now is intense, not to mention using it for pins is sick too. Aoe blind, then you can pin while in prestige stealth, and that blind stops all knockdowns or stuns… phew!

Yeah only decent looking torches imo are Rodgort’s Flame , Fractal Torch and Rodgort .

I’m confused why you chose Dueling III- Retaliatory shield? When would we block? Why not Dueling IV- Sword skill CD reduction?

Yup jportell is on the money (as usually). I switch around weapons quite a bit but when scepter and sword are in tow, those traits make a big difference.

Hey man thanks, the karka is a spread out stat allocation, which I will be switching for the p/t/crit damage earring when I have enough laurels (or guild accomidations)

I’m not a fan of most of torch skins either; too short. So, if you are looking for something different, the charr steam and asura glyphic torch skins are kinda cool.

The steam skin looks more like an electrical doohicky and the asuran skin leaves a neat trail of glowing spheres behind you when you move. Fractal skin is fairly similar to the glyphic skin and cool too, but I’m not sure if it trails you. I’m actually using all glyphic weapon skins now simply for the unique glowing effect (2 swords, scepter, and torch)!

I will likely change the swords to fractals when I get them, tho.
