I’ve played Mesmer since GW1, and this update is the best thing to happen to Mesmers since the GW1 update on May 21, 2010, which finally, after five years, made Mesmer a viable profession in all game modes. Here we are again, it having only been three years this time. Mesmer feels great now. Versatile and strong, but certainly not overpowered when taking into account the buffs other professions received. This is how Mesmer should always have been, and unsurprisingly, the same man was behind both changes. Thank you for everything, Robert. You did good, both times.

Mr Robert Gee,

I don’t know if you realize what you’ve done for our class, and I can’t know how often you play Mesmer, but the changes you’ve helped usher in have revitalized the class in a way that most Mesmer had hoped for but never actually expected to happen.

I don’t know who you suplexed in order to get Illusionary Persona (Shatter counts for the Mesmer. Previously a grandmaster trait and the best trait a Mesmer could take) made into baseline, but that change alone has caused such a positive shift for the class. You’ve opened up traits that were locked behind shatters (and thus required investing into Dueling for Deceptive Evasion) that most people didn’t even consider. You’ve taken the lackluster Inspiration traitline and made it something innovative and interesting, gave us a reason to be excited to try out the Weapon-traits, hell.. you even made boonsharing into a possible thing.

I don’t know what you were drinking/smoking when you said to yourself “Hey.. lets make power block good.” but I sure as hell want some of that stuff. The Domination line in general actually feels like a tree with traits to DOMINATE the opponent. The dueling line is filled with interesting abilities for small-scale combat… Hell, I’ll even forgive you for the frickin’ unicorn in Inspiration. I don’t know if that was your decision, but I’ll blame you anyway.

All in all, the Mesmer is in better shape than it has been in years. You’ve increased build diversity, added interesting traits that allow for so much creativity, and in this Mesmer’s opinion, helped make the game feel fresh again. I heard you did the same for us back in GW1, so obviously you are a herald of Lyssa, and I can’t thank you enough for reinvigorating our love in the class.

I’ll appreciate it if he can put in a word to get MtD restored.

(but I do appreciate the Mirror heal and mantra buff).

Edit: Why am I being so cautiously polite…

No, not put in a word – rather please just fix MtD/restore it to 2 stacks of torment, because currently condition shatter is worse than pre-patch even without IP.

Nice thread @ Chaos and obviously to Mr. Gee.

Mesmer is pretty much the only class that I’ve really enjoyed playing in GW2. But at times, it sometimes did feel like a struggle as to why people would want to bring a mesmer onto a pvp team.

I feel like we are very much worthwhile for a number of roles now, and I never expected once class could feel so complete and diverse.

There are a few kinks to work out, but I think Mr. Gee knows what we’re after and he’s done a great job for us so far.

Cheers!

While it is rather easy to step onto this hypetrain for a guy I hadn’t heard of before this post (not a really active player and TERRIBLE at remembering names), I am sure that random acts of appreciation like this can truly make someone’s day.

So, Robert, for shaping and maintaining the sole reason I keep playing GW2 (my Mesmer):

But Robert: keeps one of these Tools… in your work wardrobe. And if John or other question you about the first balance us regularly beating us and then we’ll see what we do with the other …. make good use of it

Dear Robert Gee

Thank you so much for everything you have done for the Mesmer class and guild wars in general. Mesmer was not my first class. However, long ago I decided to try it out because a friend was playing it and I felt like a class that was unique and interesting to play. It quickly grew on me to become my favorite, and now I could not imagine myself playing anything else. Fairly soon after I created my Mesmer, my friend switched his favorite class to guardian, as he felt the Mesmer did not do enough damage. However, I have always stuck with the Mesmer because of the unique changes in brings to the game. I am very happy, thanks to your work, that these changes continue to happen today. Thanks to you, I am very excited about the Mesmer, chronomancer, heart of thorns, and the future of guild wars. I have always enjoyed watching you talk and feeling your enthusiasm. I truly believe if you where never around, the Mesmer would nearly be dead, disappointing many in the guild wars community. However, you continue to bring joy into the game. Of course, there will always be complaints within the class, as others have mentioned (MtD, chaos line, feel my wrath overpowered compared to time warp, wink wink https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Time-Warp-no-innate-cooldown/first#post5216712). However, I know you will continue to do what you can with the objective of creating a viable class in all aspects of the game that may be played with a wide variety of builds and play styles. I greatly appreciate what you have done for the Mesmer community, and I hope you continue to work with the Mesmer and guild wars in the future.

p.s. Although the unicorn does not send the same message as the butterfly (I always think of the butterfly effect now that the chronomancer is coming), the unicorn can be a fierce, dangerous, and deadly animal in the right circumstances. I also believe that if any mythological animal “inspired”, it would be the unicorn.

Yep, thanks for the changes to inspiration line, chaos and everything. The lines flow now like they didn’t before. Where you look at what you want to do and can see the adept, master and grandmaster options clearly and are simply choosing which line to take for it.

The changes to utilities like reduced cool downs and reworking a few poor choices was great and kudos for not being afraid to do something different and buff something to be defining.

A small mention to the changes you made for necro, very nice support lines too, can really see the out of the box thinking there and many I know are loving it too.

I want to clarify though that a lot of the changes you see aren’t my work alone. While I was driving most of the mesmer changes and pushed some of the more… shall we say “extreme” examples coughmimiccough, many other significant changes (like Illusionary Persona becoming baseline) wouldn’t have happened without feedback and suggestions from other folks on the skills team like Roy and Karl as well as our dedicated team of testers.

Think you could get interrupt traits working in PvE next? Like if you do the act of interrupting on a target with defiance for example the traits that would require you to interrupt would activate but they boss wouldn’t be in interrupt stun.

I know this works for engineers and their knockback trait (quickness on knockback I believe)

I’ll definitely toss in my agreement here.

While I’m a clone-spammer (have been for years) who’s not a fan of the shattering mechanic, probably never will be (don’t like the way it clears my clones off the field, messes up my pacing and limits multi-target aggro management) and do miss my auto-exploding clones, I think the overall changes to Mesmer are overwhelmingly positive.

There’s more to work out, and I’m somewhat concerned that non-shattering clone tactics may be pushed even farther into the corner (to the detriment of playstyle diversity), but aside from that, it’s definitely a lot of movement in the right direction.

Thank you so much for the hard work Robert, Roy, Karl and everyone who worked on the new Mesmer, and please keep up the excellent work!

My first reaction to seeing the new Inspiration stuff, both the abilities and the build/training screens, was “GW2 really gets me.”

I’m happy. The game’s been fun for me. A lot of the new changes emphasize stuff I like — both the general feel of forcing enemies to do more than execute their rotation, and specific gameplay elements like interrupts, mantras, and general “slippery” abilities (new PU may be a bit much, if I’m honest — that’s not a big deal and will shake out in time, though).
