Won’t have much time to write today, so I’ll be editing this when I get home. Wanted to give people something to try out with the new mantra update, so without further ado..
PHANTASMAL MANTRAS
This build uses Phantasms for damage while charging mantras to support allies. It can be played in all forms of the game (WvW/PvP/PvE) to good effect. The key aspects of the build are ally support with 50% stability uptime, constant boon cleansing, and an abundance of defensive boons. It requires atleast 50% boon duration to be effective.
Sword+Focus or Sword+Torch or Greatsword/ Staff

(Pulled from Fay’s Mantra Theorycrafting Thread )
So taking that into account, I came up with this.. Apothecary’s, Rabid, Berserker’s, or Rampager’s depending on whether damage or healing is a priority.. Still not sure if Condition damage is the best choice here.
30/20/0/20/0
Sword (or Scepter)/Torch – Staff
DOMINATION
(V) – Support and control go hand-in-hand. Having our clones do AoE cripple on death is a huge help vs cleaves and for allies trying to escape.
(IX) -Torch will be imporant for both charging mantras safely and AoE Chaos Armor
(XI) – While having more Mantra charges makes our AoE heal take longer, the stability and condition removal are higher priority anyways.
DUELING
(VI) – When charging mantras, an extra 400 toughness is more than welcome.. Especially in gear that lacks toughness/vitality.
(VII) – Mantra cooldowns, ’nuff said.
INSPIRATION
(I) – Medic’s Feedback is great for a few reasons. Its another Ethereal Field for us to combo off of, a source of damage via reflects, and of course makes rezzing easier. Great for WvW.
(X) – The main reason I take MoPain in a support build is for the rapid healing. If you’re going Zerker, MoPain is a nice 3000 damage every 6 or so secs.
Torch – Stealth for mantra charging, BLAST finisher for AoE Chaos Armor
Staff – 6 of the 9 boons in the game right here along with awesome damage mitigation and a much-needed mobility boost. Additionally, Chaos Storm dumps loads of debilitating conditions on enemies and can net anywhere from 2k – 4k damage in a zerker build.. Can Phase Retreat without interrupting Mantra charges, and Chaos Armor/Storm also helps charge safely
Note: Since in some cases I’m going 30 domination and using a torch/staff, “CONDITION BUILD!!” screams out at me.. but I could see a full zerker build making good use too… I can’t say for sure yet but I’ll definitely be experimenting with the above setup.

Absolutely terrified of being the first response on another great Chaos Archangel build!
I tried this a bit tonight, and here’s my take – It’s a much more skill-bar centered build than most others. With 2-3 mantras, I find myself gazing at my skill bar a lot to see cast times and remaining charges.
That said, it feels like a strong new option for certain gameplay styles. Concentration has been a HUGE help to me and my team, even in the half-day it’s been out. Mantra of Cleansing is a so-so pick-up over Null Field for me. Mantra of Pain is less damage than an auto-attack on most of my weapons, so I prefer the phantasm-oriented build out of the two.
Honestly, I’ve been really enjoying a 20/20/0/30/0 set-up more than a dedicated mantra build. I can fluctuate from phantasm builds to reasonably-supportive mantra builds with just a few trait switch-outs while maintaining options for glamours. More than one or two equipped mantras disagreeably swaps my game-play from active skill choices to avoiding interrupting my 5-6 seconds of mantra channeling every few seconds.
How are you managing your cast times? Are you focused more on pvp or roaming vs larger group encounters?
This looks interesting, ill try it in Tpvp when I have time, and come back with feedback ^__^
So far I only really feel confortable shatter catting in tpvp, hoping to find something supporty that fits me :P bountiful interuption was a bit too random for me x.x
Hi
I am currently looking at some different builds (due to today’s patch) to experiment with for WvW 15-40 people group, usually we’re around 20 actually, zergbusting,
I came across this build and see it as workable in small engagements / roaming groups, but not really good for fully organized and coordinated groups. Perhaps I am missing something that someone could point out to me. My concerns are as follows:
1. Every single time I fought mantra or signet mesmers they are basically nothing more then lootbags for me unless I am AFK. Literally. There have not been any exceptions to this. The results of today’s changes are yet to be seen, but I would definitely fear runnign so many signets and mantras.
2. How do you deal with phantasms / clones dying in 0.025 seconds after their creation in large fights due to the AOE ? In my experience, even today, in a larger fight, any shatter based or clone or phantasm build is nearly useless because the clones/phantasms insta die as soon as they pop out, they cant make it a single step, much less get close enough to actually do any damage. The only exception to this is phantasmal warden when I pop it on the backlines with reflect projectiles trait. It basically makes the ranged people hit themselves while doing significant damage.
3. Your build lacks veil, portal and timewarp, crytical for coordinated groups. It migth do well in map chat based pugs, but when you are in a group, you gotta run stuff for teh group. The stability mantra being now group based is a huge buff, but the signets ….
4. How is the mobility ? If its based of off focus #4 and blink then its not going to work. Focus 4 is rigth down horrid as we all know from the the pre-traveller’s era, no matter how you slice and dice it and using blink purely for mobility is not an option as it takes up a slot and cooldown.
5. How is the survivability ? Can you stand in sup AC fire for 20-30 secs without wasting your dodges ? That is a good test wether you can keep up on your commander when pushing through AOE fields. If you can survive that, you’re good to go, if not, then its back to the drawing board.
5. What about boon stripping on your opponents ? Would benefits of Glamour Mastery not far outweigh Medics Feedback for your group ? You pop more Chaos Armor, more AOE cleanses, most important, deprive your opponents of stability more often.
6. The traits listed in the phantasm build are more what I used to run for PvE DPS gold farming, havent really found that build usefull in SPVP or WvW, due to what I already mentioned above.
Just curious how this build will deal with these situations.
I believe this build is in experimental status. But i agree with Tongku. With this build design, the build is not suited for WvW game mode!
. Lacks Mobility;
. Lacks Survival Skills;
. Lacks Usefulness;
Although some of Mesmer’s Mantras were tweaked, one builds strictly focused on Mantras like the Mantra Focus is in fact a little bad!
But keep tweaking it, cause it seems promising
(WvW speaking)
I don’t like the builds for the reasons stated by Tongku. With my group, we’re lacking stability and mesmers for veil, so I was thinking of doing one with null field-mantra of stability-veil.
I always run blink, no matter what my groups needs, but with stability I should be fine without blink since I can use it when I need. Problem is only one mantra won’t be enough for a mantra build, and 1 glamour isn’t enough for a glamour build either so I don’t know what to focus my traits on..
Tried 30Power/ 20 Prec/ 20 DEF Traits for Mantra last night coz basicaly it’s my New MSS Trait setup. Too lazy to change the trait.
I changed the Halting Strike into Harmonius Mantra. 3x Charge/ Mantra
Utilities Blink, Stability Mantra, Cleanse Mantra.
I have 4x stun break in total. Really nice IMO.
Team formation is like 10H, 6 EL + Necro, 3 Mes. Around 20-25total Players i think. Other 2 Mesmer bring Veil coz i bring Mantra.
My role is Sniper while keeping Backliner safr with Stability and Condi removal.
There are 5type of Support in GW2 IMO. Healing, Prot Sharing, Offensive Boon Sharing, Stability Sharing and Condi Removal Allies. I only take 2, Stability Sharing and Condi Removal On Allies. Sure i can take all those 4 but it will make my Class 100% Support and i don’t want it. I still want to drop damage with my GS.
I had around 5-15 FPS in zerg fight coz both Allies and Enemy numbers are huge. But with this 4x Stun BReak and Quick 2Condis removal i still can move into Commander Pin.
Overall i like this new mantra. Really nice. Too bad the Radius only 240. For “Recharging” Mantra part. This is zerging. U can recharge while running tightly with ur Zerg.
Hey guys, wanted to give a quick update and address a few key issues people are having.
Incomplete Guide/Build
Yes, the build in it’s current form is still just out of incubation and in it’s infant stages. This means that within the next two weeks parts of the build are very likely to be altered to improve it. The reason I put the build up so early is specifically to get feedback on the negative aspects people are noticing and then gear my testing to address them, at the same time the build is still functional enough in it’s current state to work… also, I realize I never make easy to use builds either. x.x My builds tend to take some time investment to practice and learn.
Alternative Traits/Skills
I never make a build that can’t easily be tweaked or customized to fit whoever wants to pick the template up. The core of the build revolves around 30/20/0/0/0 for the two Mantra traits, but the remaining 20 points are flexible and can be placed wherever. MoStability and Recovery are the most important Mantras, leaving two open utility slots for whatever you’d like. I prefer to place the extra traits into either Chaos (Boon duration) or Inspiration for a number of different options.. Medic’s Feedback is a great alternative choice, as are a traited Focus or Mender’s Purity (3 conditions removed every Heal with a 12 second recharge)
Usefulness
The build was designed with smaller engagements in mind. The goal of the spec is to provide damage via Phantasms while maintaining a near 50% stability uptime and constant condition removal in addition to the benefits of boons from skills such as Temporal Curtain, Chaos Storm and Ethereal fields. If you prefer Null field over Mantra of Resolve for condition removal (and of course boon removal), then by all means go ahead and grab it. Having Mantra of Concentration and Mantra of Recovery alone justifies taking Mantra traits, and you don’t actually need to grab both 3 charges (charges are preferred) and Mantra cooldowns to be effective with the mantras. So far in my testing Staff and Greatsword seem to be the best mix but I am seeing some potential in a 10/30/0/0/30 shatter variant.
Weaknesses
Mobility is looking like it’s definitely going to be an issue no matter what, but that has nothing to do with traits.
Oh, and, I’m still figuring out this video program, so some demos will definitely help when I get em down..
Something like this if you want to play the support role for group but have paper phantasm that’ll do dmg but not last long. GS due to short CD’s and the S/F for no real reason other than auto hits more than 1 target, #2 invlun #4 slow/interrupt and #5 just for a quick dying buffer for group(don’t imagine it surviving long). 3 mantra’s should be plenty of healing with restorative mantra’s 2600 heals x 9(regen from phantasms as well), healing removes condi from ya and buffs party with 3xmight n fury and NF because who doesn’t like some NF? or feedback whichever ya fancy. I didn’t put thought into the gear as its what I use on different build i just figured 20k health 3300attack and phantasms with 60%+ crit should be alright for a support build.
I don’t gvg or zerg surf(unless on warrior/guard). I use my mesmers for roaming… BUT if I were to go gvg/zerg i’d prolly do something like this or a shatter confusion build(just there’s too much condi removal/reduction out there).. I imagine it would work well for roaming/camp taking group as well.
Hey, thank you Chaos for this thread again I’ve learned something new. (As always when I’m reading your threads ).
Now my Idea to optimize your build core for solo roaming in WvW:
When I started roaming I set rules for myself that I use for crafting builds now.
In this build I took your base, changed it a bit that it fits my rules.
I choose 30/20/10/10/0 for my version with the weapons sword/sword and staff or greadsword. As you all may know the staff is for situations where you have to play more on defense and the gs is for the burst.
This is my base
Traits that would match in this build:
A few combinations for the different traitlines:
The Utilitys:
Depending on your Traits you can use a lot of utilitys in this build.
Here are some builds I created following my own instructions:
Feel free to change things, try things out and criticise.
~ Me Games Ma
@Me Games Ma: Hey. As always, happy to help. I noticed a couple issues with the builds ya created, so I’ll hit each build by it’s number
Nr.1: I usually only grab Mantra of Pain if I’m taking Restorative Mantras. It does pretty decent damage in a Zerker build, but without Restorative I feel better off with a number of other option, such as Feedback. (Oh, that gives me an idea actually…) Crippling Dissipation only affects clones rather than Phantasms and I’m not sure you’d notice much of any kind of defensive difference with Illusionary Defense.
Nr.2: Looks pretty interesting. With 5 reliable dazes for a nice lockdown flavor, I’d consider grabbing Debilitating Dissipation as well. Even though it only affects clones and you’re lacking DE, you’ll be pumping sword and staff clones and overwriting them enough that Debilitating may prove a better choice than Illusionary Defense (Crippling dissipation is a little different because it has a lot of other good traits to compete with, whereas Debilitating doesn’t). I’ve never tried combining Illusionary Defense with Compounding Celerity so I can’t comment on that. In my mind it doesn’t seem like either traits are worth it much but at the same time, I have very little to base my inference off of. May give that a shot just to see how it works out.
Nr.3: Looks good, though I’d reealllyyy like to squeeze Crippling Dissipation somewhere in there. I sort-of disagree with Far-Reaching Manipulations over Phantasmal Fury though. Its a choice of defense vs offense, I can see both being very useful.
Nr.4: With a higher phantasm focus, I’d drop Chaos altogether and put those points into Dueling for Phantasmal Fury. I can’t see Crippling dissipation working out well here either, but this particular build I’d probably go for Staff/Greatsword anyways so I’d swap that with GS training.
… I like that there’s a lot of potential variants to the Mantra/Phantasm setup, still trying out different things to see what’s the best blend.
So far it’s been an interesting experience, it’s almost certain that 3 mantras in a build works out better than four and the most powerful mantras are Distraction and Concentration which could make for a nice Control/Support focused build…
Hey Chaos, thanks for your feedback.
I take MoPain as damageboost and not as a healskill because if I trait 20 in inspirations I’d rather choose Warden’s Feedback or Temporal Enchanter which I both like a lot more than Restorative Mantras. It’s just a matter of differences in playingstyle I think.
Today I played with this build which I think ins’t as good as my Nr. 2.
I’m still trying this and want to see which one fits my style the best. For now it’s the Nr. 2 because It combines lockdown and a high dmg. With one charge MoDistraction+Halting strike has a higher dmgpotential than MoPain but a higher cooldown as well.
With the builds “Nr. 1”-“Nr. 4” I just wanted to show how many playstyles you can reach with 30/20/10/10/0. My favorite is Nr. 2 because I love interrupting (this is the reason why I like Halting Strike that much and would NOT agree with Crippling Dissipation). Atm I’m training to optimize my interrupts so that every daze I hit is one. I do also always save one interrupt of the Mantra for the enemy’s healspell what kills most of them. My only problem with this build is boonremoval so if my foe has stability I’m having a hard time.
Do you know any way to deal with this? It’s one of my biggest problems when I’m playing this build.
Maybe I have to use my Autohit more what makes me vunerable to meeles. I usually play MH sword for stunbreak and evade+dmg. Not for the autohit.
What do you think about this version?
Add: A short question: What do you mean with DE?
Even though it only affects clones and you’re lacking DE,…

One thing you could add is the iDisenchanter (replacing null field) for both condition removal (from yourself) and boon stripping (from your opponents). Then you could take the 10 points in inspiration and throw them into chaos for bountiful interruption since you seem to have an interrupt/lockdown focus in your build.
EDIT: Or throw 10 in dueling for mantra toughness or recharge.
(edited by skcamow.3527)
I’ve had this idea too but I’m afraid my disenchanter won’t last long enogh to that. In 1vX (with 1<X<5) you can’t rely on a phantasm for your whole conditionremoval.
DE = Deceptive Evasion
As for enemy Stability, I’ve always taken care of that with NullField + Sword-Auto + Shattered Concentration in Mind Crush. Remember, you have Dazzling too, so you’ll be stacking Vulnerability like crazy too.
I like that new concept too, except it seems like with Daze+Stability you’d have a stronger melee focus, which calls to mind Staff for Chaos Storm/Armor (Daze… Stability.. melee.. Oh man, you just gave me ANOTHER idea!) but at the same time Greatsword could be a really good choice… I can imagine a lot of possibilities here.
I like Nr.2 and 3 the best, and will definitely be experimenting with them.

Possibly, have you tried playing with it? Might not be as bad as you think. Only other options are shattered concentration, which forces you to give up one of your dom traits, or null field itself, which to your point you save for condition removal. Honestly the disenchanter sounds like the best option to me. Then if you still want more condition management, you could replace one of your sigils with purity or keep your 10 in inspiration and go with mender’s purity. If you did that, I might think about taking mantra of recovery for your heal. You not only that 3x heal, but 3x on demand condi-cleanse.
EDIT: To Chaos’ point, DE plus sword clones will keep stability and other boons perma-off them.
(edited by skcamow.3527)
What would you take out for DE? Phantasmal Fury or Blade Training?
What would you take out for DE? Phantasmal Fury or Blade Training?
Personally, phantasmal fury would go. Gotta have blade training for the dual sword CD’s.
But maybe you can have both. I might play with some of the other suggestions – maybe you can get away with running 30/30/10 or even 30/30/0/10. Going 30 in dueling really opens up some interesting options for your build as well (DE obviously, but also furious interruption, mantra traits – extra dmg, toughness, CD’s, etc).
EDIT: Another thing I just noticed is your fire/energy sigil combo won’t play nicely together since they share internal cool downs. It would be better to put the force sigil on the 2H set, since that sigil is permanent. If you did away with phantasmal fury, you could also replace the force sigil with accuracy, getting you 5% precision back.
(edited by skcamow.3527)
Oh now that you mention it I realize why ite Flameblast triggers that rare. Thanks!
But I do not like Force/Accuracy sigils because they do not affect my phantasms
Oh now that you mention it I realize why ite Flameblast triggers that rare. Thanks!

Ah, yes you’re right about the sigil/phantasms, I keep forgetting that.
Keep us posted, will be interesting to see what you end up with.
Hmmm my Nr. 2 worked quite well with the disenchanter in 1v1 but against 2 players i can’t play phantasm builds. I don’t know how to deal dmg and kill them fast enogh that they can’t rezz each other. It’s a matter of skill I think.
I’ve run something similar in dungeon and i found it easiest then in a wvw enviroment.
I’ve been using sword/x in both weapon set and so i was near the rest of the team in melee with the boss and the small radius of the mantras effect was not a problem.
I know best build in dungeon are phantasm with pure zerker, and with a build like this you loose dps but if you don’t have the ‘perfect’ party setup this build can help a lot.
I felt almost like a guardian giving all that stability to the party and removing more condition then a real guardian can.
The build was 30/20/0/20 sword/sword sword/pistol with mantra healing if i didn’t need reflect, sword/sword sword/focus with traited focus for reflect.
Runes and food for buff duration, armor and trinket berserk.
Oooh. 30/20/0/20/0 with mantras seems like it’d go well with the pistol/focus condi phantasm build~
It even have space for veil, should be good for roaming groups.
I’ll throw in my experience with the new mantra changes. Last night in a Tequatl raid I took a full mantra setup with harmonious/restorative mantras – pretty much a phantasm build 30/0/0/30/10.
That AoE stability and condition cleansing is nothing short of amazing. In that situation everyone is tightly balled up anyway so you’re going to get a great net effect on the max allowed. It felt great seeing the big wave coming, popping that stability and everyone standing through it. Yeah, yeah I know this is no news for guardians but for mesmers we have a pretty cool new toy to play with.
In WvW it can work very similar for coordinated groups, and for PvP – I think it will have the greatest affect there, overall a huge buff for mesmers.
This is a power mantra-build focused on my www experience, I think this is a complete build with all we need from a mesmer, we have: AoE cleanse, AoE stability, great condition survivability, glamour cd trait on and null field on, reflection with focus and some nice damage.
What this build is capable of: we can make use of the mass invisibility instead of the veil (now boon prioritize party so, with 1 mesmer every party or every 2, we can accomplish way more stealth than a long cd veil can do), btw we can swap our null field for a portal or for a veil if ppl still prefer it, we have the chance to be a cleanse bot with our new mantras and be still really resistant against condition thks to lyssa runes, or we can swap lyssa runes for more boon duration runes which will benefit our stability, we have long range illusions wich we can shatter on the zerg back for boon removing and quite some damage.
Overall this is a solid versatile mesmer build, and im interested in your feedback on it.
