Ranger Pet DPS getting a nerf
Was just watching the state of the game and Jon Sharp says, ranger pets dps will be coming down and that pets do to much damage right now.
Didnt say when, they did say there is an upcoming balance patch.Source:

this obviously means the devs are converting the over abundance of ranger dot to direct damage on all weapons and are planning to throw in some really super awesome burst capabilities too! this is an incredibly brilliant change that also saves a ton of bandwidth stress in the process! kudos!

Yeah, but you won’t be killing anyone as there is a fine line between being able to make a push for the kill before someone’s heal recharges and not being able to.
They can nerf pet damage all they want. As long as My conditions stay It won’t matter.
As long as condition clears stay in teamfights you won’t matter either.
And for 1v1 your conditions will do crap against condition removal thieves, elementalists, or guardians for that matter.
I’d almost prefer they would achieve the effect by changing Empathy from an increase in pet stats to a decrease in F-skill casting times.
That’s a balance headache that’s been putting non-BM specs on the losing end of pet survivability in PvE for months, because it’s always felt as though encounters were designed with fully invested pets in mind. It’d be nice if they were able to focus on bringing the survivability of the uninvested pet up to snuff without having to agonize about making the invested pet OP.
Also, a universal damage hit across the board isn’t really all that favorable because it might bring uninvested pets at a level where the effort of manipulating them doesn’t yield much reward. Which is a pretty reasonable concern considering the effort to reward ratio is already pretty daunting.

I dont understand why the kitten sotg or game balance is based off these esport kids who only favor spvp, and the entire game is based off whats good in team vs team comp, not how it even affects players in wvwv.
State of the Game via Guild Wars 2 Guru is based off of these people because they are the ones who set it up and want to put the time in. Is the representation broad and without bias? No. And you can go back and watch April’s episode to see how Caed and Grouch get antsy about some things and steer the conversation and talking points based on things they want to bring attention to. Then and now in this episode it’s less a comprehensive objective discussion and more skewed opinions.
Is that bad? Guru has an active shared Ranger community. I know several people are active back and forth between these two forums. It’s just a matter of nobody in SPVP (and SOTG is strictly about SPVP and not any other game aspects) with a Ranger has made themselves known. I’m sure Guru would love to have you.
Just today on Guru, someone asked why SOTG didn’t cover PVE. The answer was: PVE is requested, but no one actually cares to host or organize one. So SPVP SOTG is what we get.
SOTG aside, I don’t understand why ANetcan’t just blog and interact on their own site. I haven’t touched WoW in years, but I still check MMO-Champion just because I’m amazed at the interaction and transparency and frank discussion Ghostcrawler has going.

Battosai, Symbolic, Ovi, Gasmask, and Follidus have been seen in recent tournaments playing ranger, and Battosai has been ranger focused since launch I believe (not sure about the others) as well as contributes to the Arrow to the Knee podcasts.
Follidus (zZz) won one of the last NA tournys, how come he isn’t being invited to the SoTG? What makes Team Paradigm so special that they are part of the core top team that is consistently invited for the SoTGs? Just because they have been around and have hovered around the top, it doesn’t make them the only people that play the game.

That video is just… Woah. “Trolololol we are going to make necros so op you all will cry and run” and at the same time “Ranger can go away from the keyboard while the pet eats warriors face! We need to nerf them!” What on earth? Really now? Just when we are in semi o-kay state, we are getting nerfed because there are some brain dead people out there who have no idea what they are doing and at the same time they admit they are going to boost some other class to near god like state and then laugh about it? BALANCE! It works btches!

Just so we are clear, I am entirely with you. I agree with the points made in the other thread about both sides being amateur hour when it comes to the show. Arena Net always seems like it’s caught with it’s pants down, disinterested (watch the April ep), or simply “can’t tell you yet”, all of which makes the whole show seem like pulling teeth.
On the host end, the players absolutely have agendas about their own classes and comps. I will give the benefit of a doubt that they understand other classes, but they tend to focus on the “Rock Is Fine, Nerf Scissors” side of things. Last month they griped about leashing issues on the pet, now it’s damage. And as you said, it falls back to ANet there – why mention the negatives without the positives? All of the follow-up from Grouch revolved around the Necro, and it’s quite clear all of the representatives were being messaged to ask about specific things pertaining to their friends and not necessarily the whole scene, let alone the game.
What makes Team Paradigm so special? Hell if I know, I don’t really follow them at all. I know in BWE there was a lot of input on Warriors and Thieves (the two classes I really followed back then), and when the game went live, a lot of the theorycraft taken as gospel was proven to be mediocre. Lowell’s infamous Unicorn Bacon Thief builds are a joke to most Thief players once the state of the game was in everyone’s hands.
I would love to see any of the Rangers you mentioned take a seat on the show. Have they been asked? Have they approached Grouch (which seems to be the ticket)? I don’t know.
I’d love for PvE and WvW to be discussed, too. I learn more from SOAC than I do from Guru these days, mainly because SOAC seems more approachable and actually hold interesting discussions.

Sad thing is the only classes in this game that even interest me are Thief, Ranger, and a distant third Warrior. At least the Warrior is openly getting love, even if it’s for Hashtag E-Sports.
So the pet durability buff didn’t solve the pet survivability in dungeons but because of its impact in sPvP (I don’t recall anyone in sPvP asking for pets to be more durable) pets in dungeons will become even worse than before. Is it really that hard to make the vitality buffs not apply in sPvP? Do you really need to kitten with the class in areas where the durability buffs didn’t really matter and DPS was still low compared to other classes?
It’s quite clear the devs have no idea what they are doing with the ranger class as a whole. The pet design is so kittening broken and they are doing nothing to fix the core problems of the class.
As others have said, if this is a sign of them moving class DPS off of the pet and onto the ranger, that’s great. If it’s a flat out DPS nerf for the class, how does that make sense when rangers were already struggling to compete with the other classes without these nerfs?
Dear Anet,
Pls fix the pet AI/control before swinging a nerf bat at it.
Thx
I made a post about this a long time ago.
If this DPS nerf to the pet is given as a buff to the ranger’s DPS, that’s perfect. If this is a straight nerf to the pet with no ranger DPS compensation, that’s really really bad.
I suspect what will happen is this: DPS will be moved from the pet to the ranger and we, the players, will play the pet while the ranger becomes the AI component.

If there was a skill that let you do that, that would be pretty kitten cool.
It’s quite clear the devs have no idea what they are doing with the ranger class as a whole.
You can add few more classes to the list, just when I switch to ranger from Mesmer which they broke the GS weapon skills and now they are nerfing pet damage? Epic Fail…
Pain Train Choo [Choo]
Mind Smack – Mesmer
It all depends on how big the nerf is . If its 10% then its fine , if its 20% + then its really not and we should all be switching classes .
Initial reaction: kitten it!
After cooling off: If this means a move towards making the pets less important…GREAT!

Will greatly depend on how they implement this. A nerf with nothing given back to the ranger would SUCK.
Transfer damage from the pet to the ranger could be very welcome. I just got the feeling this will be a nerf with a tiny, if anything, compensation…
They’re not going to give us something back, they used the 1000 hp increase on pets to give them a reason to nerf our DPS on our pets…They probably planned this for awhile and knew how it’d go over with the community.
They don’t wanna waste the effort to overhauling our pet system, and instead want to diddle a long.

It all adds up, slowly but surely, add enough and players will vote with feet -as in leave the game.
Even if they give us more damage to compensate we still won’t get the same out of each point in power because the damage is still split, we still can’t compete with warriors and thieves.
I doubt anything will get buffed to compensate. Jon said “they are more sustainable now, they can actually stay in fights longer, the damage will be coming down.” So i guess the reason the damage is getting nerfed is because they got a few extra k hp last update.
i always thought the pets were UP and needed a buff, which they got last time . Then again , these are the same designers who say thieves and stealth are working as intended

Yeap, which is a load of horsekitten…Pets can’t stay in the fight any longer cause 1k or 2k more HP..
Only reason they stay in the fight now is if people CHOOSE to ignore them…

Its the in-the-long-run approach of balancing stuff but who cares about the long run when the pet is dead now!
Marksman is a garbage tree until 30 major trait, Skirmishing is only good up to 20, WS is pretty bad at 10 but starts getting great at 15+, and NM is only good for bunkers with 20 points at most.
Huh? Of course the viability of the traits depends on the game mode and many other things, but in my opinion Eagle Eye is a really good 20 points Markmanship trait:
It increases longbow and harpoon gun range to 1500 (longest range in the game besides engineer’s grenadier 30 points trait!) and also increases longbow and harpoon gun damage by 5%. For comparison many other professions give only 5% dmg increase with a 20 point trait at a similar tree (e.g. dual wielding master trait in Strength line for warriors).
Wilderness Survival can give your ranger amazing survivability. Natural Vigor is probably the best 5 point trait in the game. Engineer needs 30 points, adrenal implant, to get exactly the same effect. There is no difference between those 5 and 30 point traits.
So compared to many other professions, many of the ranger trait trees, which you were claiming to be bad, are actually better than average.
Ranger has some weaknesses e.g. lacking AoE (besides barrage), stun breaks (shared anquish trait helps a lot), but to call all ranger traits just crap is not a fair analysis.
Ranger pets require some adjusting, because ranger can make himself into a full bunker and still do good damage using pet. If most other professions go full bunker, their damage is really low as well.
Ranger underwater should also be looked upon, because currently lick wounds is too good.
I hope the next patch will give more stun breaks to ranger, because 3 stun breaks to choose from is little:

So they’re nerfing the rangers damage? Because when I play on my ranger, I feel like I’m the pet lol.
I doubt anything will get buffed to compensate. Jon said “they are more sustainable now, they can actually stay in fights longer, the damage will be coming down.” So i guess the reason the damage is getting nerfed is because they got a few extra k hp last update.
So…before we were told that our dps was balanced around 100% uptime on the pet. And now that we’re getting close to achieveing that it turns out it’s not balanced? Who balances this game?
It’s really not hard to focus a pet, I remember Puandro telling me he was out and about, had 20+ stacks of MB on his pet and he was fighting a thief or something, the thief disengaged, and re-engaged with his buddy showed up, they focused down the pet ina matter of 1-2 seconds.
Xsorus is correct, they are an issue because people let them be an issue. I hate to keep using it as an example, but DAoC, in competetive 8v8 pet clearing and focusing were absolutely essential to keep pet classses at bay and force them to make decision, swap pets, recast pets, reposition etc, it was a constant battle throughout the fight to keep pets at bay and force the caster or user to make tough decisions, if you didnt, it was over.
It blows my mind that these “top” teams can’t focus down or call for an assist to focus fire down a pet to make the ranger either swap or the pet dies and forces an insanely long pet swap downtime.
If anything it seems like they are dumbing down spvp or competitive play and make it so the players have less to do as far as strategy goes, and just more facebashing on the keyboard for teh winz.
I’m never on a kittening node in WvWvW, I’m against the odds, all the time, as is any roamer, why the hell do I have to take a hit just because I choose to be outnumbered? It’s the way I prefer to play.

Every pet attack needs to be a somewhat longer reach lunge. Moving targets were always a problem for pets. It’s the only fix we need. C’mon…

Lets be honest, most of these teams wouldn’t last a few seconds in 8v8 in DAOC.
Where if you let Theurgist/Sorc/Minstrel/Bonedancer/Animist pets run amok in the fight you’d lose.

I’m fine with a pet adjustment, just fix the kittening pathing/AI, maybe allow the pets to hit moving targets and we can talk.
I just hate how esports and competetive team metas rule the world for the rest of us that really dont give 2 kittens about spvp.

I suspect what will happen is this: DPS will be moved from the pet to the ranger and we, the players, will play the pet while the ranger becomes the AI component.
That wouldn’t be too bad. But their track record with pet related issues makes me think they will just nerf the pet damage across the board for a quick ‘fix’ so they can get back to fine tuning warriors.
This is pretty silly to be honest…. on the rare occasions that the pet actually hits, the dps is no more than that of a Warrior/Thief/Mesmer.
You get the feeling that they really don’t like the Ranger class.
Are they doing anything to address dungeon capability across all classes except Guardian, Warrior and Mesmer?
80 Ranger (3), 80 Warrior (3), 80 Thief (3)
80 Ele (2), 80 Engi (3), 80 Rev (2)

So true…. it boggles my mind when devs (in this case Anet) chooses to nerf something because bad players can’t learn how to play. Pets drop in seconds when good players focus them, but lets nerf their dps anyway because bads just let the pet solo them while trying to kill the ranger.
p.s. pet soloing someone is an exaggeration, before someone gets moody.
No iv’e had my pet hit GC thieves for around 6-8k, lol.

Pets hit hard but lets be honest here. No one competent will die to the pet alone.
Im off tomorrow (sunday) and i will finish my pet damage spreadsheet and post it. When pets get nerfed i will know what and by how much they nerf it.
Jade Quarry – Team Savvy – #1 NA WvW Solo Guild
Might as well nerf pet damage and while we are at can we take away bows and give us rubber band guns please?
I’ve been saying for a good while that the conquest format has done horrible things for the game, because it gives artificial value to qualities that don’t work at all in any other format.
Ele scepter for example is very popular in spvp because people fight over a point and eventually they won’t have dodges and eat the dragontooth. That will never happen in any other format where people can simply walk out the circle.
Trapper ranger was called OP in spvp simply because it could cleave into a point well. So was HGH engi.
But have you seen trapper rangers or HGH engis in wvw teamfights or dungeons? Not very often, because people don’t need to sit still on a point for those skills to work effectively.
That format is the reason we’re not seeing changes to ele scepter, or any ranger build for that matter (because people stay in a point and eat pet damage to maintain the point), or any kit changes for engineers or any changes for necromancers in dungeons (supposedly their damage is good, harr harr).
In WvW hammer warriors are some of the most desirable builds for team fights. In dungeons they reign supreme. But in spvp, because they have to sit in a point and eat condition bombs, they are considered poor terrible souls in suffering. Well, once they buff their uptime and condition clear, you’ll see how they will be back to how they were in beta. Even with 2.2k toughness roaming around, warriors would consistently crit me for 5k on whirlwind and even 6k on an eviscerate or 100b if I got CC’d by somebody else. Their autoattacks on axe by themselves do pretty ridiculous sustained damage, and once they allow them to stay on targets more warriors will have strong viable spvp builds while reigning in the two other formats.
But rangers and necromancers and engineers get to shine in a few select conditions of spvp and wvw, while nobody wants them for dungeons, and they obviously must be nerfed.
Already been playing my hammer warr a lot in solo roam wvw, can’t wait to see what they change next month.

A decent player can kite a pet all day long … pets need some major adjusting to actually hit a moving target.

Agreed. I actually really like where things are now overall.
Longbow still needs some love, and pets being able to hit moving hitting things needs a little work, but everything else is golden. We’re in a nice place.
I don’t get the people who are still crying that ranger is weak. No, we’re pretty good now. But it is a close enough thing. We have to really work for it.
If you nerf pet DPS, please be very careful and considerate about it.
Pet’s either need to reliably hit moving PCs or that pet DPS nerf needs to returned to the ranger as a DPS buff.

This is basically Anet:
Very nice analysis; I would like to see a stun break on signet of the hunt. What do you think?
I think adding stun break to it would make it too powerful. It is already a very good skill, which most rangers equip it anycase and it has only 30 s cooldown, plus signet mastery trait would lower that even more.
Since Signet of renewal is already a signet and a stun break, I think it would be a good idea to spread ranger’s stun breaks to other types of more rarely used skills:
“Protect Me”
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/%22Protect_Me%22
“Sic Em”
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/%22Sic_%27Em%22
I feel both of these skills are under used, but making them into a stun break, would add some needed viability to them.

1) Jon Sharp is the same bag of dog excrement that said we don’t need more control over pets.
2) Jon Sharp has OBVIOUSLY never ever played on a ranger at any level or in any pve/dungeon/wvw/pve game.
3) I’d be super happy with a pet damage nerf -IF- they give what was nerfed to the the ranger as a buff.
4) Please fix the AI/root attacking/pathing and before, as someone said, swinging the nerf bat at it. If they pet actually had really good AI, good pathing, and could hit moving targets, they MIGHT be worth having.
5) Please consider giving a perma-stow for pets option! If nothing else, make it an elite skill!

yes pets never hit good kiters and rangers become useless if the pet is chilled crippled and/or kited
Complaining that they are only gonna do it cus now everyone runs a BM build is like complaining that they only nerfed D/D bunker eles cus everyone was playing them. Errr yeah, it’s the way it works. Nobody would ever ask for nerfs to a build nobody plays, but when you have 4 BM rangers per tPvP match and WvW is full of “roaming bm rangers” (btw, I’m tired of seing BM rangers running away from 1vs1) then people are gonna realize how strong it is and ask for nerfs.
I’m really okey with having pet’s damage toned down as long as they keep improving their AI. Cus right now pets are kitten strong against players who can’t kite, and pretty meh against players who can.
Wow… is this for real??
I thought we were DONE with suffering in PvE just to keep PvP’ers happy?
Do I have to go back to GW1 just to see Skill-Splits done RIGHT?
They told us time and again that this side effect was supposed to be a thing of the past… that everything was supposed to be designed Pre-Split. …All I waana know now, is what kind of compensation our pets get now? What’s their long-term goal for pets? B/c if it doesn’t include some way to “evolve” them to fill other roles (besides Melee DPS), then it’s GG for PvE Ranger at this point. …stick a fork in it…
