Ranger patch notes
Minor buff to QZ, not sure how pet buff will work, but initial CoE run is looking grim…
Other than that nothing of importance for me. All in all it’s as I would’ve expected, neither glad nor dissapointed. And no balancing next patch…it really will take a year to get to a good state…And ANet, no matter how much you try and push it I will not play beastmaster…unless you rename the class to it.
+1 to this
- Tail Wind trait: Now has an internal cooldown of 9 seconds.
- Furious Grip trait: Now has an internal cooldown of 9 seconds.
Just a fix … one that maybe our work here on the forums highlighted … yay.
- “Guard” skill: Reduced cooldown from 30 seconds to 15 seconds.
Guard is nice for PvE. It’s a wasted slot in PvP since players are smart enough to go after the Ranger instead of the pet. I’m still not a fan of it though. Having to devote a utility slot to only apply protection to your pet is extremely lackluster to me … especially since it is supposed to be part of the Ranger, not some bonus we have. Look at how others can apply protection to everyone in the group. Look at the protection up-time with boon duration from stone spirit if it would actually stay alive.
- “Sic ’Em” skill: Reduced cooldown to 40 seconds from 60 seconds.
When I fight someone that is too bad to lower my pet’s damage by up to 66% by simply moving, this will be great. I, however, don’t spec for fighting those types of people. This needs the pet AI to be in that special place before this will be good to me.
- Lightning Reflexes skill: Reduced cooldown from 45 seconds to 40 seconds.
11% cooldown reduction (5 / 45 = 0.111…). Appreciated.
- Signet of Stone skill:
- Reduced cooldown from 120 seconds to 80 seconds.
- Increased passive toughness by 100%.
- Now allows capture of control points in all formats and communing in PvP.
My favorite skill change (aside from the pets). Before, we were only getting about 30 toughness from this while our pets got 90. Now both the Ranger and the pet get 180. This is quite nice. The reduced cooldown also makes me want to look at the signet builds a bit more. We can get a much higher up-time on our invulnerability now.
- Signet of the Wild skill: Reduced cooldown from 120 seconds to 60 seconds and duration from 12 seconds to 8 seconds.
This is just scaling … lower cooldown but lower duration though the cooldown was lowered more. I never really used the active though. I always used this signet for the extra regen in the builds that focus on that.
- Spiritual Knowledge trait: Increased activation chance from 15% to 35%.
I was playing around with this in the mists. It might as well have been 100% chance to proc from what I was seeing with the shortbow. It’d proc stone, sun, or storm and 20 shortbow shots later I’d proc it again. If spirits weren’t so bloody fragile, I’d take them in a heartbeat for the good up-time on protection at the least.
I still need to compare it to when I don’t take the trait though.
- Swoop skill: Corrected the damage indicated in the skill fact.
Just a tooltip fix
- Increased health of all non-elite spirits by 60%.
They are still fragile with this and the +100% health trait … maybe it’s not +100% of the new hitpoint values? I’m really beginning to think they are going in the wrong direction with these.
If they want them to be vulnerable to damage, then they need to be more powerful. Otherwise, let’s please go the way of warrior banners.
- “Search and Rescue” skill:
- Increased cooldown from 85 seconds to 180 seconds in PvP.
- No longer revives defeated allies.
Just a big ole nerf. I think the cooldown is largely unnecessary since you can stop the rez by killing the pet (unless it’s already dead, of course).
- Point Blank Shot skill: No longer has an increased cast time when the Eagle Eye trait is equipped.
Bug Fix
- Quickening Zephyr skill:
- Increased duration by 1 second.
- Players are now healed at 50% effectiveness (increased from 0%) when under the effects of this skill.
This is nice. I don’t often take this skill, but it puts it “more in my sights.”
Compared to the warrior example I mentioned and how ridiculously well the Thief’s boon steal on sword+dagger is working and how easy it is to use (thank God we don’t rely on boons as much as others) … I’m very disappointed with our changes.
Heck, I was very confused when I saw the abundance of “thief love” given they were fine in far more areas of the game by many measures, but these were our changes.
Perhaps it’s simply because the fear of what we will become once pet AI is truly fixed and what we will become now with the more durable pets.

I made a quick spreadsheet to highlight amount health and armor changed for pets … both changes by actual values as well as percents.
If you look at this as well as the changes to the drake’s F2 cast times, drakes got the most significant level of improvement this patch (in my opinion).
It’s interesting to see that as far as health goes, there are 3 types of pet health values:
- Max (29,982) : Ursine
- Mid (22,425) : Drakes, Spiders, Pigs, Moas, Armor Fish, Jellyfish, Shark
- Min (14,868) : Dogs, Cats, Devourers
Armor is the same with 3 types of armor values:
- Max (2,748) : Devourers, Armor Fish
- Mid (2,061) : Ursine, Dogs, Drakes, Pigs, Shark
- Min (1,374) : Cats, Birds, Spiders, Moas, Jellyfish

Class envy. It’s why all developers end up avoiding the forums. Impossible to stop the whinning.

tldr: Rangers feel they are kitten and Anet hates them. Other claases think Rangers O/P and gets too much love from Anet. Both groups are going to quit then slit their wrists.

From what I’m reading that isn’t QUITE accurate. More accurately, the pvp community has (and has for awhile now) had an issue with how strong the pet is for awhile, with the amount of damage it can output, and the leash range (meaning you can have it attack somebody on midpoint and then go back and sit on home point).

Lol anet buffed my ravens health. Lol i suppose the devs have never fought against a good bm ranger. This class is so strong now it’s almost comical. This patch actually improved an already op build and did nothing to bring other builds to the same level. I’ve not changed traits or gear on my ranger in like 5 months.
Jellyfish Skills
Immobilizing Whirl skill: Now sticks on its target instead of passing through.
Chilling Whirl skill: Now sticks on its target instead of passing through.
Poisoning Whirl skill: Now sticks on its target instead of passing through.
My question is where do I get this Jellyfish with Poisoning Whirl
Ranger
Pets now out sustain Warriors.
Say what?

I’m still of the opinion that Spirits need a flat out redesign, Putting Duck Tape on a failing building is not going to fix the problem
If they refuse to give them good actives and innate aoe dmg reduction, turning them into banners would be the next best thing.
Forcing traits to make allot of utilities viable is a kitten way to balance btw.
They seem to have this idea that it helps balance builds, even though the only thing it ends up doing is forcing classes into cookie cutter specs…
A terrible way to use their trait setup.
Major traits related to utilities should be, for the most part, minor buffs/tweaks to the utilities not flat out requirements to use them…
Either make traits focused on cleansing/dmg buffs or make utilities the main source of cleansing… not this kitten split where there is obviously a ‘far better than utility cleanse’ in a number of classes traits scheme, where the majority of traits are 5% dmg buffs and CD reductions. That forces the trait to be the most efficient way to build your spec, to the point it ends up being the only viable way to build your spec… well in anything short of a super burst dps…

i still don’t get what exactly have they buffed that REALLY took rangers in the right direction? Nothing was done to our kittenty TRAITS, weapons and pets got demolished in dungeons as much as they did before. Nothing but 0.5sec faster activation of F2 is worth mentioning, awesome update…
Signet cooldowns were reduced , that is the right dirrection

Ya, it’s called splitting spvp and pve.
They had to do it in GW1 because there is just no way you can balance fairly for both and, while it may not be everyone’s favorite fix, it’s the only real way to address major problems.
I feel OP now in PvE, and them my Reef drake in PvP is just a kittening demon, it scares me… I fear for the day when he becomes like Beary and no longer needs his master…
Oh yeah, Bears are OP now, bear + sig of stone + sig of wild + guard = “Hey let me just never die, oh that heal on #6? Yeah don’t need it, save it for yourself noob!”
