Ranger update
I’m not sure has it been asked somewhere befor, but isn’t quickening sephyr breaking stuns like other utilities giving same effect like haste from thiefs and frenzy from warriors?

Maybe there’s precedent for change in other games, but I’ve stuck around for ~7 years with this series… game-changers (profession-based) came, but few and not for the better. Some become OP while others were left to rot. To the last day I kept a line dropped on the official wiki, years after the last expansion and after many free content updates, the ranger update never came.
There were two big reasons for this. First, the difference in GW was that the ranger was actually good in PvP, though terribly antiquated in PvE. Secondly, what truly masked PvE skill-balancing were a secondary profession and PvE-only skills (if you’re not familiar, imagine if the Orders taught skills, and any class could slot them). The bar itself was so open it allowed for all kinds of nutty builds; now the profession needs to pull its full weight, it cannot outsource for its lack of viability. Improving one profession does not create opportunities for others.
Actually, rangers did get an update that made them horribly broken.
http://www.guildwars.com/gameplay/developer_updates/august_2009_skill_balances.php
Pets became stupidly broken in that update; one skill got +53 damage, a 21 second deep wound (reducing total health and recieved healnig by 20%) with a five second recharge and 5 energy cost. Then there was Scavenger’s Strike, a 5 energy attack that gave you up to 16 energy. You effectively had unlimited energy.
Those two skills alone made the pet (and by extension, the ranger) horrifically overpowered. You could often bruteforce through healers on hard mode.
Of course, since everyone and their dog (and going off the ragethreads in this forum, still do) want to be “teh snipar” and/or was too busy doing splinter+barrage to see lots of pretty numbers, it went unnoticed.

Well that could output a lot of single target damage, single target damage didn’t fit into the Meta. The melee classes, which the pet build basically was, were bringing massive aoe through some combining of MoP/Splinter weapon with hundred blades, daggers or Sycthes. The pet couldn’t keep up with that kind of aoe damage.
You could spend 10 seconds trying to kill a two or thee enemies with aoe at risk of a healer negating it, or you could spend ten seconds killing two or three enemies one at a time with enough damage to largely negate healers in most situations. Personally, I preferred not to risk it.
Besides, pets didn’t get DP, and had an energy version of Final Thrust with a 5 second recharge to boot. And could be unblockable for 26 seconds (with a 30 second recharge shout)

Enemy Groups in GW usually came in a lot larger groups then 2 or 3 and MoP could easily deal with any size group.
In fact the Splinter Weapon/Hundred Blades + MoP combo generally did more damage the more enemies there were.

OP 1 month ago, Ranger is worst now then OP posts ……. Very disapointed at the slowness of fixes in GW2 that is unless it effects Gems and there is aways a instant fix, funny that?

Rangers are not that bad off, they have problems but I have no problem with sb/lb builds with axe/horn when need. Very good in WvW better than many and less squishy in Dungeons PVE etc.
Main problem I ever had was longbow arrow speed but they say they are tweaking that so that LB is not useless against other players unless they are AFK or just real dumb.
so anyone…
was that the magical ranger patch everyone expected?
Just asking…

I have a new love for Longbow/Shortbow and Greatsword as a combo, and I really enjoy the speed boost on the signet, especially since speed was the first thing I’d always notice between my Thief and Ranger.
I notice my pets have better damage output and stay on target more.
So yes, it did restore my faith (and play time). It’s not there yet, but it’s finally looking like we’re going somewhere and that I agree with the direction.
Ive gone back to playing my ranger in stead of my engineer I made after I had enough of the ranger.
I can now swap out my warhorn for a torch or dagger for better DPS because the warhorn is not needed anymore do get around quickly. With signet of the hunt on 25% movementspeed and greatsword with the 20% shorter cooldown trait I think rangers should be able to keep up with a SB-thief now when moving around. 9sec recharge 1200 range leap is pretty awesome.

Really? how quickly people forget the troubles that WOW had when it was released. It has only been three months. kitten people are impatient these days.

This game was in development for FIVE YEARS, ofc we are all mad that stuff doesn’t work right…. FIVE YEARS!

So wow was announced in 2001 and not released until 2004. At the time of release you often had to wait hours to log in to your account and server, random error messages and drop outs. They also released numerous patches over the coming months to address balance issues. It took a long time to get the game right.
I use WoW because it is a yard stick.
Just have a little patience GW2 hasn’t been out very long, its free to play and instead of a launch and forget they are addressing the issues periodically.
Also a bit of perspective. How many MMO’s are perfect upon release? give them a break with this kitten already.
I hate participating in this particular dumb debate because it pops up in every MMO forum that there is, but…
@Ridgeblader: WoW was released in 2004. In the eight years, and dozens (if not hundreds) of MMO releases since that happened, people have higher expectations for things like playability and balance in their games.
It’s called progress.
It’s just so irritating having played through game after game finally getting things right, and having seemingly every new game that comes out try to reinvent the wheel regarding things like… pet scaling, resistances and ability to not be destroyed by AoE.
WoW eventually figured out that AI controlled pets will never reliably not stand in the fire. Eventually, after years of patches, they made them (for every class) take drastically reduced damage from AoE. RIFT (after a while) did the same thing, by building AOE resistance into the pet classes’ talent trees.
Both games have pet AI, pathing and and control vastly superior to GW2’s. So… how long will we have to wait before ANet finally bows to the inevitable, realizes they’ve created the same problem the same way every other game with pets has, and finally decides to implement the same solution?
Other than this, after the 12/14 patch I’m really very happy with my Ranger. I just have no desire to take her into any dungeons, because if I do I’m going to be needlessly punished by unavoidable pet death on many encounters no matter how well I play. Putting a pet on passive and only using it for a buff is not a viable solution, by the way. Like I said earlier, it’s no longer 2004.

You cant compare a game that is as crappy today as it was in 2004 to this. The ONLY reason that game EVER became popular was due to the heavy marketing. Had it not been for that, it wouldn’t have had a player base much higher then say Evercrack or FF. In 2004, of what I can remember we basically had, Internet space ships (Which is STILL an awesome game because the dev’s actually PLAY it) and Korean grindfest’s. So please, enough with “WoW”, it’s like the fricking minecraft of MMO’s…
Pet AI, will never work right…. ever. Lineage 2 is the ONLY game I’ve see where pets work and that’s only because they are 100% player controlled, outside of pathing.
Like the guy above me said, it’s 2012(3), not 2004. The ranger class’s dps shouldn’t be hampered by a completely worthless pet, at least in Guild wars 1 we had the OPTION of using pets, instead of being FORCED to, same goes with all the other games out there that use rangers and pets…

less with the hipster angst
world of warcraft is still one of the better holy trinity based raiding mmorpg’s on the market.
no mmorpg to date has done extensive marketing. you didn’t see WoW commercials until the night elf mohawk stuff started with wrath of the lich king.
guild wars 2 will never be like world of warcraft because it has no raiding. you can’t argue that point – it’s just a fact. the game also has a gear treadmill that doesn’t stop abruptly once you’ve done a few heroics or farmed a bit for your craft. i had two level 80’s in full exotics by the end of september here.
while both are mmorpgs, they are different animals entirely. while you may not have liked wow personally, it is far from a crap game. do not let ignorance taint your posts unless you were vying for a job at Fox News
You all missed the point completely, point is that no game is perfect out of the box. They all take time to reach an accepted level of greatness.
WoW is a successful MMORPG like it or hate it. It is what it is.
Everyone has their own ideas about a ranger class, you are pigeon holing Anet by saying “previous MMO’s had the ranger this way so should you. Even if that doesn’t fit in with how you view the ranger class within your game. I like it that way so make it so or you are doomed to fail!!”
You cannot simulate thousands of people playing the game and their impact & ingenuity in finding tweaks and exploits that imbalance a game. You just need a little patience it has only been about 5 months from release. The game is a baby, it will take many adjustments to get things right. I have confidence that Anet will get there because I enjoyed GW1 supremely and the changes they made to that game.
Everyone is so kittening impatient these days.
As I’ve said before, it’s not about any player’s idea of the Ranger – it’s about ANet’s idea. THAT ranger still has not been manifest, due to the very long list of things which are broken or bugged. Forget fixing them – yes that will take time – but we should at least get some official acknowledgement that these things exist…that would be a start.

Holy thread necromancy
2 days isn’t THAT bad. Although the message of the reply is a bit ridiculous. Nobody really cares about that anymore. It was crappy the way it was done but most people are over it. Giving us 40ms back on crossfire won’t solve the issues.

QFT!
Can add more games to that list (Vanguard is just one more example) that made serious improvements to pets ability to deal with AOE.
It needs to be done, it will be done, in some way, shape or form – I can’t in my wildest dreams believe that the Anet developers are that ignorant that they don’t see this as a major issue.
Pets/minions in this game don’t really have ai to begin with – they can run from point A to B, follow an opponent and use their abilities. Heck, even the old, old reaperbots for Quake 1 had a much more sofisticated ai than what’s seen in this game!
Here’s just a small extract from their (reaperbots) abilities, back in the day:
- Picks the best weapon
- Strafes
- Circles or charges
- Goes for health if needed

I’d like to see pet AI that would flank the foe if they are not the main threat like in WoW. That alone would help with pet survivability.
Any further information on this? We need an update!
id like to see the following:
- increased projectile speed on the LB
- more improvements to pet pathing and survivability in dungeons
- shout rework
- spirit rework
anything less is kind of unacceptable because these things are very broken.
Still disappointed after the December 14, 2012 update The projectile buff applied to all classes; did not help rangers stay on par with other classes. “Obstructed” projectiles still occur when theyre not supposed to. Pets are still clumsy. Skills… a lot of them really should be redesigned. Viable build variety is still not very diverse.
Ranger update! PLEASE!

yeah. the update a month before did make the greatsword a lot better. and the dec 14 was a step in a right direction with slightly better bows, pets, and making a few lackluster traits more viable.
but i agree its still not there. even sped up, pets have a hard time hitting moving targets. if we spec for them, it makes a lot of our burst/cc feel random, since we have little or delayed control over it, and if we dont spec for them, they’re pretty weak.

Nope just looks like some thread necromancy.
I logged in to check if anything interesting was going on … “Maybe they even fixed the Ranger” i thought. Turns out the gw2 is still the gw2 i’ve left ~2 months ago. This game makes me sad. If i’d been the manager there i’d either committed seppuku or at least fired everyone. Well you know … every other game i can think of respects their players at least so … cya again in a couple of months. Have fun !
@ Haya jii san.1978
rangers are oddly abit better than they were 2 moths ago, its still a work in progress but there has been improvements
Improvements? Maybe you mean fixes. Fixed some things that were broken, still alot of things missing and broken to this day. It has to be fixed to work the way it was intended before it can be improved.
Haven’t lost faith yet but the waiting is somewhat of a downer.
“They say you are what you eat.
Which is funny ‘cause I don’t remember eating a f.ing legend”
not fixes since they were never in a working state, it would have had to have been working than broken to be able to have been fixed. everything we are getting is improvements since we have never seen them in such a state before
I would just wait until the next patch(28th I think?). There’s no doubt going to be some ranger improvements.
If there’s nerfs though, I seriously will cry.
You won’t be the only one :P

Traps are getting nerfed.
So you think, just because they said AoE are getting nerfed without specifics on WHICH parts…
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
well considering what they listed on twitch it looks like elementalists, marks, theifs are getting nerfs to aoes….and why are we posting in this thread again >.<
well, 121k views; its more likely that the devs will look at this thread and see the number of folks that want improvements for ranger class. with a thread this big, this is clearly a major issue in gw2. i wish theyd give us a weekly update on whats going on on the devs side in terms of class balancing (what theyre working on right now, planning to do, etc). i think thered be less frustration/rage/complaints if they communicated with us a little more =/

Well apparently using AoEs to try and stop reviving is bad (I dunno I am guessing more PvP players whining) then yeah sounds like traps.
Anything that might hurt a thief is getting nerfed- I thought that was obvious by now.
Best way to stop zerg behaviour: make so many people play thiefs that the zergs can never see each other!

Wow, thanks for pointing that out. That’s pretty amazing how many people are aware of the ranger and it’s need for improvement.
Yeah, right, you know, before when people already hit 60k on this thread, what did they give us?
Underwater combat! HOORAY. Something that was NEVER mentioned ONCE.
It doesn’t matter how many views this thread has. They will probably do something totally unrelevant again or nothing at all.
I want to thank you all warmly for bumping this 2 month old thread. You are all super awesome.
