Weapon Wise
Greatsword is Crap, The only Build it’s remotely effective with is Power/Crit Builds, which don’t work well for Rangers in Melee because we don’t have Stealth and other useful abilities like Thieves/Warriors to get away once we’re in combat…..You don’t run this weapon with Condition Build despite it having a bleed, It’s simply not worth while compared to the other weapons.
Shortbow – Again, the Damage on this weapon is absolutely horrible, I figured this weapon was more for Conditions, But Simply put, Running a Condition build you’re better off running something else because It basically has The Bleed Which you won’t get off half the time, and the Poison which is only really good point blank on the target. The Number 4 Ability is absolutely horrible because Pets don’t scale from our Conditions at all, So it basically applies as crap bleed to the target that is useless to everyone.
Longbow – This weapon is really on effective with Power/Crit Builds, you won’t use it as a Condition Based Weapon because it doesn’t have squat for Conditions..It’s fine for its purpose though The ability to dodge the attacks of this Weapon very easily make it Poor compared to Thieves/Warrior Ranged Weapons.
Axe – This weapon is actually good, The only Kind of Subpar ability is the number 1 that bounces, But it’s not enough to make this weapon suck, This includes off Hand as well….Very Good Weapon All Around.
Sword – I like Sword, the Number is annoying but the other abilities are fine on it.
Dagger – I like Dagger the same, Both abilities are fine
Torch – It’s a good weapon, Number 5 Abilities is underwhelming with Axe though.
Horn – Again a good weapon.
Basically SB and Greatsword need the most improvement

The Signets themselves aren’t completely terrible..Health Regen is alright, The Speed is alright (but needs to be faster for the class, 10% is not enough), The Condition removal one is a decent stun break.
So it means they aren’t allright.
The only one i dislike is the Toughness/Immunity one, and that’s because i’m not Power Based.
I’m going to run the Speed one no matter what, You can’t do World vs World without 10% run speed.
PVE wise, I use both the Health Regen and the Condition One…

Honestly it would probably be helpful to post in every class forum a “state of the class” type of thing going over where Anet feels each class needs work and what the devs are looking at.
Traps also need a Range update, They’re fine is SPvP because you’re forced to fight on a point, However in World Vs World the 600 Range is absolutely useless as you can’t put them anywhere to be remotely effective.
SO long as they fix pets causing obstruction I’m ok.
First I’d like to think John and the rest of dev team for their response and apparent behind the scenes work they’ve been doing for the ranger profession. I like many other players completely understand that not very update is going to contain changes for everyone. However it is very disheartening to go two weeks with no positive change while everyone else has gotten something. It’s like Christmas when Santa forgets your coal or present.
And to my fellow players while this is a move in the right direction, I’d like to point out that there will always be haters that won’t be satisfied until they’re the big cheese. And we also don’t know for timeline for when to expect this update. The coming weeks? Thanksgiving?(was that celebrated in GW1?) Maybe as late as Wintersday?

I second this, all you can do is place them on gates and hope people run up to trigger them. The traps need an overhaul.
As for this thread, I’m going to remain on the fence. This is just them throwing a bone because they know they kitten us off and we’re being vocal about it. Now let’s see if they put their money where their mouth is or continue to leave rangers in the dust.
Well, they said next patch so when next patch hits we can atleast expect the changes. While I agree they are doing damage control atm, isnt that exactly what we asked for? So while it definitely calmed the fires of me internal rage by quite a bit, I am anxious to know when this patch is coming out, Im worried next monday will come and it will say “This is a general maintenance patch only. No content will be updated” like they did for a couple straight weeks there… Thanks JP for the heads up tho, honestly like many guys are saying, communication is key. Knowing that you had plans for us this patch but ran into problems atleast helps, and helps that you know what to look for. Hopefully my glass cannon builds will be effective now and I can roam around in tourny pvps like in beta.

Not entirely, all the signets are trash give or take renewal or hunt, the passive of hunt is crap I agree, they need to make it on par with thieves 25%, but its activation is nice. I use it with raven to get a 7-9k spike with it. It just requires a good pet/signet spike combo. I surprise alot of people when I sick my pet after them when they try to hide because low health and he melts them.
Poof! Someone called and I am here. We made some ranger changes this patch, but had to go back on them because of risk factor.

Now why can’t we get post like this more often? Maybe not from you directly but someone at ArenaNet that works with you that can relay information like this more often. I have literally felt like I’ve been in the dark ever since game launch. It’s like no one really seems to care about the Ranger community players.
Now that I have some into in my mind I feel better. I will admit I read the patch notes and didn’t see a single change for Rangers and right then I about blew my top and within minutes of just quitting the game. Luckily I came to the Ranger forums before doing so.
I hope these updates and/or changes make me feel more useful, primarily in dungeons.

I’ve been playing with various different skills on my Ranger and have come to the conclusion that I can’t do WvW without the 10% passive run speed skill on my bars. Even with it I feel like I’m the slowest runner in the zerg when no run speed boon is active on anyone.
I don’t use the Health Regen Signet for the personal Health Regen, It’s more for the Pet (Which it gives about double of, It with Nature’s Healing will keep the pet up decently)
10% isn’t great, but you won’t run without it..
The 35 Toughness though is horrible.
The Actives on most of the Signets are crap, cept the Toughness one.

I truly believe that all signet must work on the ranger without traits. And should not have only half of passive effect on ranger. If devs are positioned pet as a part of the rangers – why do we sacrifice 2/3 signets effective on them. I mean, what we have as advantage that we need to be weakened?

Necros had their patch a few weeks ago, LET US HAVE OURS (Seethes). In all seriousness Ive notice a massive flux of necros going around, they scare me honestly. So hard to kill and hurt so bad. I isnt a fan of dem.

I agree man, my biggest pet peeve about signet builds is the fact I need to trait them to be useful, except hunt, and that I need to give up piercing arrows for it, and their long kitten cd. They should scrap signet of the beastmaster, combine piercing arrows with quickdraw, and make signet of the hunts activation work on channeled skills aka rapid fire. Since ranger has no huge heavy attacks having it work with channeled abilities would definitely make longbow scary every 30 secs since hitting for 100b like numbers with rapid fire at range would make people think twice about standing there in the open.

Jon – thanks for the update, I really appreciate you taking the time to post here. How did the flame retardant suit cope?
Please look at Signet of the Hunt. A 10% runspeed buff + attack of opportunity, which doesn’t stack is very weak.
Ele’s by comparison get ranged targeted AoE damage/blind – on a 20sec cooldown, this is a very nice skill and rarely leaves my ele’s bar. Don’t even get me started on the thief’s massive 25% boost AND a ranged AoE blind.
Multiple enemies with a ranged guaranteed miss vs. +50% pet damage (not my damage, the pet) for ONE attack (which doesn’t stack).
1. Increase the movement speed buff, we are the scout class and currently we can only move as fast as the pack. I don’t think we should be as fast as the thief, but we should be closer (and faster than other classes). I would love to see this raised to at least 15%, preferably 20%
2. This needs a better active, which is to say right now if I accidentally activate the signet I’ve just applied a debuff to myself. So, I use this signet to get to the fight and then swap it out for something actually worth having slotted. Now I’m actually moving slower than many other professions, this is less than ideal.
I’m glad they are making these changes, but i think people is settings their hope way too high, i would wait until changes are made to shout “Victory” because being honest i don’t expect anything to be as people wants it…maybe they increase spirits hp by 15% or something like that and then you all will be like…“QQ patch is crap” :P
So let’s just wait till changes come before we start making sacrifices to please Anet gods.

Im with ya man, my main is ranger ankittenep coming back to the class because its where my heart is but atm I just feel much more efficient on thief or rifle warrior.

I do not agree at all, I think we should be the fastest moving class, we should have 25-30% run speed with hunt, reason for it is because as you said we are scouts, we have to move fast just by being scouts, thieves are more sneaky so they shouldnt move faster. I think it needs to be increased to be like 33% at best 25% atleast, that would make me feel very mobile, and make my survivability go up since I can kite more effectively. Would also be great if it stacked speed increase with swiftness :P That would probably be a bit much tho.

Great to hear! I really want to run a spirit-based build simply because it would look awesome (sue me, but they look good and I’m all about visual) but the performance of spirits just hasn’t been where I could survive with them.

I wouldn’t expect an update on the ranger until after the halloween event. I think its best to just enjoy this fluff event and then expect a big patch full of ranger loving. I just hope that they fix some key issues with some of our skills, especially like the ones they have already mentioned.
I would like to see a boost in GS damage, and Longbow, honestly. Longbow is supposed to be our signature weapon, but due to its…lackluster nature, it only fills in very minor roles in WvW.
Agreed, but if you read his post thats pretty much what he said, they plan on changing buffing and fixing ranger next patch. So we know its coming, its just a matter of how it gets done.
Ooooh! Can we please get Signet of the Hunt upgraded from the sad 10% speed buff to the lovely 25% buff that my Thief enjoys?

I’m excited about having the Ranger fixed. I always play melee DPS in MMOs, but with GW I wanted an entirely new experience, so I started with the Ranger, which I loved at first. It’s nice knowing that I will be able to go back to my Ranger soon.
I will say, however, that this prompted me to start a warrior alt, which I am absolutely enamored with, haha.
Truthfully I’m scared… I like my LB ranger the way it is. I have very little desire to play any other profession and would hate to see something fixed that isn’t broke. Mess with GS/SB all you want.

Honestly I would have to wait to see before tossing out the ‘thank you’ messages. I mean, it seems they thought the SB skill #1 needed improvement and look how that turned out.
These Ranger fixes will be the make or break in my choice to stay with GW2 or move on to something else.

For weapons I’d like to see tweaks, here’s my thoughts on the GS:
Skill 1 – works great with the evade, attack arcs, range and speed are all fine. But, please, take some of the sting out of the DPS nerf applied between BWEs. Currently the DPS would be weak for ranged, let alone melee.
Skill 2 – A bleed isn’t much use to a power/crit build that compliments a GS. I’d say change that to vulnerability as it would better syngergise with the rest of the weapon’s purpose (and help with the DPS problems on 1).
The rest are just fine:
Skill 3 defines the weapon and generally very cool, leave alone.
Skill 4 is incredibly versatile block/knockdown + ranged cripple with projectile finisher all on one button – some rangers moan about this but IMO they just aren’t using it right.
Skill 5 – stun/daze + pet buff + nice damage, no issues here.
Please Please PLEASE tell me this affects the rangers horrible 1hsword issue which hinders dodging by rooting the player! and or makes the greatsword more viable specifically in PvE. these changes would put me over the moon!

I just wanted the skills of the Ranger cause damage, and not having always make conditions builds on sPvP. If you look well, there is no other viable build of Ranger in sPvP except Condition. Why? Simple. The skills (bows) give ridiculous damage. In any MMO I played, Ranger is dps, with a great damage, except here In DG, pet don’t count, cuz they die in one hit. So, you lost 40% dps (+nerf).
And not, I don’t want reroll to Warrior.
