Ranger update
Exodus, wouldnt any fixes or buffs at this point be a good thing? I mean you wont get everything you want, ever. But atleast they plan on giving us something next patch. I really just hope nothing happens like another delay, but next patch should be ranger day and will most likely bring alot of ranger lovers back to the class.
Wow…that made my day. JP validated everything that we’ve been complaining about. That feels really……<sigh>
This gives me hope. The devs are listening and apparently completely agree with us regarding the primary issues with various professions. While necros haven’t yet heard from JP directly, I’m sure that the issues plagueing them are known and will be addressed soon too. All players can take heart that Anet is on top of things.

Been reading this post and it really makes me sad how other class thinks of us

but upon reading Jon peters post i say its payback time…
The update is appreciated.
But seriously, people need to chill out. Of curse they are working on the Ranger as well. People need to stop making it sound like it’s a conspiracy every time there is a patch, and one profession isn’t updated. Learn patience.

Don’t get me wrong. I am happy that at least someone took the time to come over here and post something, but every time I read it, it just sounds similar to the hole ‘animation’ bug/stealth nerf.
I have played MANY games in my 36 years, and I’m sure many of you agree with me when I say that when your gaming for that long, you pick up on things and you see a pattern on how things are dealt with in the gaming market. And for them to say “we made ‘some’ ranger changes this patch, but had to go back on ‘them’ because of risk factor.” He is telling us that there was more then one change done by saying ‘some’ and ‘them’. However, they couldn’t push ANY of them live? They where ALL a ‘risk factor’? Or was there one change only that they had for us and they didn’t push it out because it was a risk factor? Or is this just a lie to keep us quite till the next patch where we might here, sorry, the changes have been more complicated then expected, it might make it in the following patch?
Call me paranoid, maybe I’m just going off of the only other post I’ve seen from Anet in the ranger forum which was a fat lie trying to cover up a nerf, but the only thanks I’m giving out is the thanks for taking the time to type something. I’ll thank the changes when, and if, they come…sorry
“Poof! Someone called and I am here.”
Evidently his hearing is delayed 2-3 weeks.
Like this? (No offense – thanks for this topic Jon <3)
Ascended Gear-progression disables WvW for us.
Stop it now!
Planned enhancements for this patch but had to go back on them? I can understand that. Better to get working changes than a bunch of changes that are going to cause more problems than they’ll fix.
I do agree with some of the previous posters who said its odd that EVERY change had to be pushed back (considering that there are a lot of bugs that could simply be fixed with very little potential for problems), but I’m willing to give a benefit of the doubt. Maybe its the case where they were working on actual enhancements and changes, had problems with them and pushed them back, and didn’t even get to the bug fixing stage at all because of pushing back the actual changes. Maybe thats the way they generally do things, enhancements first then bug fixes with any time remaining once the enhancements are ready.
Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll be looking forward to the next patch with bated breath, then. Hope it doesn’t take too long.

heh yep, let them be spoiled and they will start qq after the “buffed-ranger” patch
Here, let me enlight you about my ranger fun so far, although it’s not the best stats yet, but imagine after the patch haha.
Gotta hand it to the man: this is exactly what we’ve been wanting to here. I haven’t even been complaining that much and this news gladdens my heart.
This is a good news, at last my spirits won’t be useless as much
High fives Jon This makes me very very happy to hear, I love the spirit skills and I can’t wait to see what you guys do with them!
I hope quality of life means a ‘No Pet Option’
=)
I hope something changes to the Ranger game play and soon. Lately I haven’t had the desire to log in and play for very long.
Faze.6948Skill 1 – works great with the evade, attack arcs, range and speed are all fine. But, please, take some of the sting out of the DPS nerf applied between BWEs. Currently the DPS would be weak for ranged, let alone melee.
I think the Evade forms part of the net damage to offset the lack of DPS.
e.g.,
Ranger vs Warrior Greatsword
two runs of auto-attack (not including vulnerability for simplicity)<snip>
So the evade has allowed the ranger to output more damage than than the warrior in this (contrived) example.
Or am I not understanding how it works?
Dante really answered this already, but, taking skill1 vs skill1 it does indeed favor the ranger, but if we compare skill2 to skill2… As a whole, the feel of the weapon in in-game is the ranger GS is lacking in DPS
(Incidentally I feel warrior GS is an overrated one-trick pony, warrior dual axes however should have every skill renamed to “Press to activate roflstomp mode”.)

It may also mean the changes are not just cosmetic. If they plan for changing trait lines i can imagine they have ideas and are testing how they evolve. And no one wants to push not ready ideas into production stage. And because Jon was speaking about trait lines, it’s really possible the upcoming change is deeper than adding some damage to some skills. My opinion is that now it’s not necessary to bring random partial improvements. Small random improvements won’t change anything. Let’s be patient.
I really hope they consider a ‘non’ pet tree option.
Relying on AI to do damage, control, etc for you is really not good in an action MMO such as this. There is so much evading that ToT for Pets (Time on Target) is really bad…so if your DPS, etc is spec’d into the pet, you are basically screwed.
One problem with rangers is the lack of build diversity created by a number of sub par utility skills. Many signets, a shout or two, and spirits are all a bit lackluster. That is the first place to expect improvements. Second is trying to improve the feel/ pacing on some weapons.
This is the important bit. Whatever they change or don’t change, the fact that Jon gets this is great.
I hope among the “some bugs being fixed” is the Crossfire+Quickness bug.
Its more then just fixing signets/spirits. The ranger trait lines also have some pretty severe flaws. The Beast mastery trait line is full rather useless traits if you look at them in the bigger picture. Since I personally run 30 Beastmastery I’ll make a example of it. I find 2-3 of the traits I will never use. True this is evident in most of the trait lines. But Maskmanship gets two traits that should logically be in the Beast mastery line and would actually be useful for a Ranger that wishes to play as a beast master. I’m still trying to understand the logic behind placing BOTH Signet of the Beast master and Beast masters Bond in the Markmanship line?
Agreed. I don’t understand why ‘pet’ specific traits are in every tree…
I really wish they’d just make the beastmaster tree the obviously the pet specific tree and let the rest of us who want to go Petless actually do it.
I really hope they consider a ‘non’ pet tree option.

That’s funny, I was thinking of a similar enhancement in the thread about perma-stowing the pet:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Can-we-get-a-permanent-pet-stow/first#post527435
I think it would be a good option for the ranger to stow the pet in exchange for a selectable passive buff:
F1 – Move speed buff, say +20%
F2 – DPS buff, something like +15% to base damage of any skill
F3 – Team buff, something similar to the spotter trait.
F4 – Reactivate pet.Put the bar on something like a 20sec cooldown to prevent abuse of the mechanic, but only when a passive has been selected. Stowing/reactivating the pet should have no cooldown until a passive buff is enabled (for jumping puzzles, etc.)
While I know the ranger is built around the pet, there are times where the pet is outright useless such as AoE heavy dungeons. In this case it would be a nice option to give up the utility of the pet and get something back in return.
Sweet baby Jesus as someone who rolled a ranger since launch and has not made a alt until now… is happy to hear this….

‘’Lol hard not to laugh at you. Why would you even post if you quit, do you crave attention that much? Seriously who quits then cries on the forum? Kids who want others to share their opinion. And what lie are you talking about? I swear if its the shortbow nerf then Im glad you are gone, the nerf isnt even noticeable unless you use QZ and thats called a bug, not a lie. Hopefully this was a purposeful move by anet to act as sort of a black hole that sucks out the stupid people and make them quit to never return. Since you crave that attention Ill give you some, grow up, no1 really cares that you are gone, but if you are gonna bash our game, make sense when doing it.’’
Why would I post if I quit? Because I bought the game and am just as entitled as you are to post. I paid for it. Just because I am playing something else at the moment doesn’t mean that you have the monopoly over this game or these forums. If posts are about attention, then your posts are attention seeking too. That makes no sense. My post was to express my opinion which I’m entitled to. I paid the same money you paid for this game. How is it YOUR game over mine? Are you more deserving of it because you fanboi or are you licking the dev’s feet as they code? i don’t get how it’s YOUR game. Entitled much over something that anyone can own for a mesely 50$?
The lie I’m referring to was calling a nerf an animation fix. Many people mentioned it and were upset with it so don’t act like I’m the only one. So in conclusion, I still own the game. I still have a max’d out ranger with all exotics. I will post when I want and what I want, oh your forum highness.

Never say never. I can think of quite a few ways that anet would “improve” things and actually make them worse.

Thank you!
Seriously, greatly appreciate the communication and that you all are listening to our feedback. Definitely hope the updates live up to our expectations.
Make our signature weapon – longbow – worth getting out.
And tbh fix the kitten obstructed bug/issue that means 75% of your attacks miss because someone moved.

They could improve signets, shouts and spirit relative to survival and traps, by nerfing survival and traps, much like they improved shortbow 2-5 relative to 1 by nerfing 1.
Great! Was looking forward to a reply for a dev
Any idea on when these first changes will be implemented?
23,375 views – something tells me that this is what people were waiting to hear, though not all of them replied. I know that for the first time since the ‘animation fix’ I’m inspired to log into the game Thank you John! I’m not expecting miracles, but as others have stated it is nice to know that the many voices that have spoken on the forums have been heard. Again, thank you!

I do seek to bring attention to my posts, because most of them are about exposing trolls and giving anet ideas for ranger changes. Its not you posting that bugs me, its the fact that you are crying on here and flaming anet and saying how you will never buy their products again, why would any1 at all including anet employes care about that, why would they wanna read that and why would you wanna post it? You are looking for attention, and you want people to follow your lonely kitten to w/e game you are playing or to agree with you and quit. Idc if any1 quits, its the stupidity of the post that gets on my nerve, and I have to tell stupid people where they stand.
Calling the shortbow nerf a lie is stupid, since they are extremely more qualified to tell a bug than you are. Its not even noticeable outside QZ so quit kittening about it. Feel free to post all you want, but when you make posts that lack common sense expect me to call you on it. I mean, Im giving you that attention you crave.
Thank you so much for the acknowledgement Jon! It’s all we wanted, it has been fun trying out other professions, but i am sooo EXCITED for incoming Ranger buffs <3

You’re here to expose trolls? Wow your life must be pretty boring. Also, you get upset that I say something negative about Anet? You really need to take a Xanax. I’m not looking for attention nor am I looking for people to follow me anywhere. I think that anyone with half a brain knew that they called a nerf an animation fix. They even changed their notes to admit to it after they were caught lying. If you didn’t realize that, well you must of not been paying attention. I guess you were too busy ‘’exposing trolls’’ lol. As for me craving attention, I made my little post explaining my opinion and you are the one who freaked out about it. Oh No’s! Someone said something bad about anet. Fanboi supah powas activate lol. Seriously, it’s my opinion and an opinion is just that. It’s not some super fact. It’s how a person feels. So you trying to tell me that how I feel is wrong and that you’re going to correct me for it is laughable. Get off of your high horse. People are entitled to feel however they want and it doesn’t need to be approved by you, mr self appointed forum royalty.

“Winter is Coming”
This is good news. I may have to take my poor 80 ranger off the shelf.
Though, my biggest problem with Ranger is our “Obstructed” bug with Longbow and most ranged attacks. Will this be fixed? It’s nice our utilities are getting tweaked, but it sucks even more that most of our attacks won’t hit for no reason.
I am looking forward to these “significant ranger improvements.”
My wishlist:
I hope they make some utility changes, like not requiring signets to be traited to gain active effects from them.
I also hope that they change some of the trait lines. It would be awesome if all trait affected us in some way, and some additionally affected the pet instead of so many pet only traits.
Marksmanship: I wish they would condense the opening strikes for you and the pet into one trait. For the second it would be awesome if they could make it so that it is more useful during boss fights (one opening strike throughout a 5+ minute boss fight does next to nothing). For the third, I would love a “you deal additional damage to vulnerable enemies trait”.
Skirmishing: I wish that the adept, master, and grandmaster traits gave effects upon criticals. The current effects upon weapon swapping and +damage while flanking seem situational and I think would be better suited in the I-XII traits. The +flanking damage seems very situational, like it was made for the shortbow situational, how often would this skill benefit say a longbow ranger who went deep into this trait line…?
Wilderness Survival: Please move the traps into this trait line, it makes more sense.
Nature Magic: Rejuvenation should just be changed to a continual healing that is always occurring. As for spirits, either make them more durable, or change the spirits unbound trait into a massive range increase, more like the old gw1 spirit range.
Beastmastery: These I-XII traits all need to affect the beast-master in some way!
One final thing that I don’t like is the feeling of traps. I personally find throwing traps instead of laying them to feel quite odd. I also wish that traps would do more damage when set off, and would provide their combo fields both before and while being activated. This would be more of a style where you would lay your traps, engage the enemy, hit them with the effect of the combo field, and then when they ran over to you, the damage from the traps would help to finish them off.
I think everyone knows that Rangers are ‘broken’ pretty badly…hence why the class got no updates this patch and a personal response from JP.
I’m glad they are addressing it and are planning on a big re-work it from the sound of it.
But I wish they’d realize the issue stems from PETS and this being the ONLY class that relies on them as part of the actual character class design. Guardians and Necros have their own ‘unique’ thing but they are skills, abilities you spec into.
The pet is actually part of the ranger from the very beginning.
Hopefully we see massive changes to the class ASAP. I’m basically holding off leveling so I can experience as much of the ‘new’ ranger from the beginning.
I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much. While it sounds like they have finally noticed some major areas like the crappy or useless utilities, he didn’t really make it sound like they are doing a major overhaul.
More like finally changing the now chunky old oil rather than swapping in a turbo charged V8 and an all leather interior.
I don’t play ranger, but I’m happy to see a Dev posting about profession bug fixes/updates again, and none other than Mr Jon Peters! I look forward to hearing from you about some other professions as well
Ps. I wouldn’t be upset if you shared some pointers on how YOU play necro
I wouldn’t get too excited, the last time the devs promised an upgrade on a profession forum (guardian hammer), it turned out they got a totally useless trait that gives 50% chance of 4 second chill on a crit with a minute cooldown or so.
They called it “hammer love”, except literally no one ever uses that trait due to its obvious uselessness.
Concerning weapons, where rangers lack the most, longbow #1 for example does about 40% of the damage it should do in order to be useful in any way, rapid fire even less (barely 30% damage of what it should do, considering it takes 5 seconds to finish), and there is no way the devs will add ~65% longbow damage.
The most you will get is MAYBE a removal of the root on 1h sword, maybe a minor change to one of the shortbow skills to try in vain to silence the massive disappointment from shortbow rangers, as nothing they do will make up for the ~30% damage loss that weapon got, even though it was already quite weak and insufficient for spvp, now entirely useless, leaving not a single ranger build that is viable for spvp, but forget about improved pet behaviour, as that is too complicated, they tried that before but couldn’t figure it out.
(edited by Zsymon.8457)
Actually they buffed guardian hammer quite a bit, so giving it any more love was a good thing for guardians.
Ill believe it when i see it. So far you have lied multiple times and have given me no reason what so ever to believe you or Anet as a company. Heres a tip for you Jon… Your players are not stupid and in MOST circumstances, know more about the game than the devs working on it. This is true in just about every MMO thats ever been released .
You got ranger fixes? prove it.
lol………. chill out man wait for next patch.,,,,
[ALS] Anvil’s Last Stand Guild Leader
I only have a Ranger since the launch of GW2, and only ever played a Ranger in the 6 or 7 years of GW1.
Rangers were always a bit of a loser when it came to updates for GW1 and it looked (Looks ?) like it might be the same for GW2.
I hope, as a lot of you others do, that they make the Ranger a class worth playing, a class to be proud to play, a class that’s not excluded from any events because they are seen as weak or useless.
So I am looking forward to the next patch but trying not to get my hopes up too much so as to be not too dissappointed.
Here’s hoping for the Ranger.
Great! Thank You! I love my ranger and I will most likely do so even more after a few improvements!
I liked the idea of swapping out the pet for a passive buff instead. I WANTS 25% movement speed!
Our signet should provide 25% movement speed.
Always been Ranger since gw1.. Not going to change that, ever.
Finally some updates for us and you looked into our issues^^ Thanks Jon!
