Seafarer’s Rest
I would love to see that skill changed so we can move while we do it, something like thieves do with one of their skills.
Do you think that’s possible in the future or you think it will be too OP then. Also the range is too small in my opinion. Sometimes I’m quite close to some of my enemies but I can’t hit them…
Anet, any Christmas gift for us the rangers?! :P
Can I hijack this thread and wish that we can channel Barrage also when we’re moving? Pleeease?
yep…for a class that’s supposed to enjoy the mobilility of a thief, a lot of their channel skills root you in place for full effect…
Agreed. I use Axe offhand and I don’t get how #5 is suppose to be viable if we can’t move while using it. =\ Especially since we have to be in melee range for it’s full effect.
I love whirling defense. It has one of the coolest looking animations in the game (especially if you have a legendary or particle effect weapon) and stacks vulnerability like a beast. But i agree, it shouldn’t root you; its a rangers move for goods sake lol
I still use it though. I use it when the boss doesn’t hold aggro on me so i can use it and back up again.
Id like to see it return to its original form, Block All attacks and projectiles – The Gw1 form – Not this cheap knockoff.
Ps: Mobility Intact.
It’s such a peculiar ability to begin with. It reflects projectiles, so coming to the conclusion that it’s an anti-projectile ability is merely logical. However, it also applies vulnerability to targets that are in melee, on top of dealing melee damage. It’s plain weird.
It would make sense however if you were to be able to move while casting it, because then it would essentially be a gap-closer against projectile-users: you’d be reflecting their projectiles on the move and once you’d reach them, you’d start doing melee damage and applying vulnerability.
As it is right now it sucks. The no.4 sucks as well. It’s pretty sad, considering I absolutely love both abilities, but only purely because of their animations.
@ Agadar.4931
It does not reflect projectiles, it only blocks them. There is a big difference.
I agree totally with the feeling of wanting to move, and it is ok if it is just reflecting the projectiles if you can use it to close in more while also doing some melee dmg. It is really a nice animation, but would be so much more loved if we can move with it!

Wrong.
It does reflect projectiles. Try it yourself. The skill tooltip is just misleading.

Yes, tested and confirmed. A good skill that would be very good if we were allowed to move around when using it. If not, increase damage in melee range so that we’re not sitting ducks when using it!
It should be changed and I think they will eventually. Anet seems to be moving at a snails pace in fixing rangers but moving extremely quick for the others. Im not patient enough to wait around, they have 1-2 more patches to convince me personally too stay.
It’s pretty fun to pop with dmg immunity signet on spin to win thieves

If only we didnt have to trait for it….
It’s pretty fun to pop with dmg immunity signet on spin to win thieves
remember thief can spin their dagger storm too
I think if this could move it’d be OP. The dual role it plays as ranged defense and melee AoE isn’t confusing/inefficient/nonsense at all, it means the skill always has a use no matter what type of opponent you’re facing.
The Warrior’s #5 offhand axe skill Whirling Axe is pretty much what your guys are asking for. Same animation, but can move and also does a bit more damage.
In comparison, I can see the dev’s reasoning. The warriors are the melee experts, so they can move. Rangers (are supposed to be) the range experts, so we can’t move. If so, I bet you warriors would complain how a ranger class is on par with a melee class! Hah! Funny how them warriors do more damage with bows than us, but yes I know I know we have the pet dps, when it’s alive…

Using Whirling Defense against a melee opponent is only going to get you killed.

Projectiles can only be reflected ONCE now, so a whirling defense will counter their dagger storm, throwing their projectiles back at them and piercing their reflect because they were already reflected, it’s god kitten hilarious.
I think whirling defense is fine as is, it’s a projectile shield that detaunts melee, it’s also really really strong when used in a combo field, especially etheral where it’s able to stack at least 10 stacks of confusion.
I don’t think we should be able to -move- while channeling this, however i think we should be able to block melee attacks (maybe a % chance to?) OR ramp up the damage on the melee range attack to really make it a “I don’t want to be next to him.” sort of thing.

If you’re built like a glass cannon idiot. I build for high toughness and healing and can WD in melee range no problems, PvP, PvE, zergs, dungeons, etc.
NOTE: I’m not saying i can drop this while going toe to toe with Hundred blades or a pistol whip spamer (mostly because pistol whip stuns you) because hundred blades just flat out does more damage, however if i can get BEHIND the 1H blades then yes, i’ll drop whirling defense and cackle as my drake charges up his lazor.
Durz, every chump in this game has at least one kind of interrupt on their skill bar, so it takes just one chump to make you waste a 25-second cooldown skill unless you pop one of the two sources of stability we have.

Actually a vast majority of interrupts are ranged, and thus you reflect the interrupt back which is just flat out hilarious…
PS: Can anyone confirm whether or not mantras and moa morph are still reflectable or was that changed already?
Just a quick tip – whirling defense reflects all kinds of projectiles, even from siege weapons, which, imho, is quite hilarious – bounce that 500 kilo stone right back to it’s source for some decent damage!
Haven’t tried this yet on the spvp map with the trebs, would be interesting to see if it works there as well – talk about surprise counter attack!
I would suggest either being able to move when using it, or reduce cooldown by at least 5 seconds.
:D
The difference between the thief’s Dagger Storm and the warrior’s Whirling Axes is that they do nothing against ranged attacks and Dagger Storm is an elite with a 90 sec cooldown. Do you want to give up the projectile reflection for movement or the cooldown for more damage? Do you really want that?
I actually think it has to either move or have its range increased. It has such a long cast that we’re stuck whirling around at nothing if the baddie simply walks away. If it weren’t such a long channel I don’t think I’d care (like Guardian 1h sword channel).
The skill is called WW defense..defense not offense…its a defensive skill against projectiles. It does some pretty decent dmg but its not easy to make someone stay in meele range while you channel it.i used to use it in some builds and its cool.Whats wrong with you guys?why do you want every skill to do 100000 dmg in the click?
The #4 skill of the Off hand axe is a bit low but this is for another thread

If I had to give that up in order to get the ability to move while using the skill – absolutely not!
But Dagger Storm do reflect projectiles and throws daggers around. Whirling Axe I see more as a pure melee skill, not really comparable in this category of skills (defense oriented skills, even if they can be used offensively).
In general, I’m not a big fan of skills that roots you in place when using them – for all classes.
Still, WD is my favourite offhand skill for the ranger, a skill that indeed have many uses if you just think about it for a while!
A reduction of the cooldown would be worth considering though, if we can’t get the mobility.
The off-hand axe is only decent for group activities or trap rangers due to the number of combo fields available. The two skills on their own are just not worth it at all, especially in PvP and WvW.

O_o what ?
It can send back treb fire?
WooooooooooW
gonna test it!!!
Bring whirling defense back to the orignal way since gw1 and it will be perfect.

I’m sure Whirling Defense cannot reflect trebs, I’ve been in multiple defending situations where I still get knocked down and damaged while using Whirling Defense in WvW

This.
You are effectively not taking damage unless you opponent comes up for melee, and in that event you earn your desired effect of giving our damage as they are now in range of the axes. It is an excellent skill and not really comparable to Dagger Storm if it is apparently an elite.
The 4 skill on offhand axe is lackluster in that it seems to have no utility, just another attack that does damage (not necessarily a bad thing, just lackluster).

I believe it reflects the projectile if the projectile itself hits you directly.
If the projectile hits the ground, WD will not block the AoE caused by the impact and you will take damage.

Much to my surprise i can confirm that WvW trebs, ballistas, and Catapults will all be reflected back to their attacker (and every poor kitten in-between) as long as it is a direct hit, if it is outside the small bubble of wind around you (which means you’re still in range of the KD and damage of the impact) then you’ll reflect it. HOWEVER in Khylo you will effectively “block” the treb, eating the damage, but still getting knocked on your kitten so it’s not that great there, but it can save your life.

If the projectile hits the ground, WD will not block the AoE caused by the impact and you will take damage.
This, trebs and catapults have a larger plast radius than WD shield radius (even if you’re traited) and as such if it lands outside your protective wind bubble you’re just going to eat the damage and KD.

Yeah I agree with all your points, I use an off hand axe but the 4 is useless and 5 as awesome as it is, is kind of a strange attack.

Tell that to the warrior that killed himself with his own killshot that hit my Whirling Defence last night.

So much yes with the slaughtering warriors with their own kill shot! I wish i got sPvP match recorded where the stars (and thieves) aligned and i reflected a piercing kill shot through 3 glass cannon thieves that were stealthed and on their way to kill me and the warrior killing them all xD oh it was glorious… if only i had actually planned that….
It’s the most fun when you hit the skill mere seconds before it’d hit you so they have no way of stopping their inevitable death!
PS: I will give my arm and my leg if path of scars becomes how the Chieftans works in Forest of Nifhel (when it returns it knocks them down)
Yeah, moving for this skills should be nice.. but it says 180 degree for the reflect… soo thats mean it reflext projectiles in front of us only ? and a 90 range.. it reflect only yourself.. nothing good for group support even stacked, it reflect nothing but projectiles targeted on you.. well there is a trait .. but 4 totaly waste pts for this little change to make it nicefull .. well wish is only what we can do

Path of Scars doesn’t suck at all. You can pull off some great combos with the pull, the damage is good and it piercies.
Wouldn’t mind Whirling Defense getting some love, tho. Even the baseline radius of the skill is underwhelming.

I will admit it’s my fault for skimming through the thread, but I wasn’t the one bumping a supposedly two years old thread!
But the problem is still there. You are rooted with WD, the range is too short and the damage is for 3 foes only and meh.
So this bump actually Is justified. I still don’t know why the ppl still says that axe offhand is a good weapon…
Ima just say that I wish whirling defence was more reliable without having to trait to make it bigger.

The potential burst of path of scars along with the general bad coefficients on rangers skills.
The animation wouldn’t make sense if you could do it in the move. If you look closely it’s more than just spinning around. Your ranger is actually hitting projectiles to redirect or reflect them and I don’t see how you could make that viable while on the move.
I’d improve the skill be increasing it’s target cap, increase radius, and applying the vulnerability on first few hits so the damage on the back end is more rewarding. Perhaps making it block 1 hit is also a good idea or I just want my ranger to be as op as possible and this idea is not so good.

I’d be happy if they made it so that you block melee attacks and you reflect ranged ones, that way it wouldn’t matter how the short range is.
Trait offhand-training, thank me later.
Also, keep retaliation in mind.
(edited by wauwi.9162)
Because Whirling Defense gives both retaliation and vulnerability, the trade-off is rooting. That said, the skill needs a buff. It’s almost impossible to use the skill to support your team because the of the combination of rooting and a minuscule reflection radius. It’s substantially weaker than nearly any other reflection skill in the game, and the vulnerability/retaliation benefits rarely pay out.
The skill has to have it’s radius at least doubled. Right now I can still easily get hit by projectiles like grenades and cluster bombs landing at my feet. It’s almost impossible to do things like step in front of a cannon and reflect Omega rockets to protect it. (The one time that worked was pretty epic though.) Being rooted so long leaves you so vulnerable to aoe and melee, too.
If they keep the rooted aspect, the skill needs to at least give stability while channeling. Or let us move, but at half-speed. Regardless, the blocking radius has to be at least doubled so we can use the skill for team support. Even then, it’s still a quite small area of reflection.
This should indeed work while moving OR it should have its cooldown cut in half. The dmg isn’t bigger than autoattacking anyway.
Would work really well on downed players in PvP with the cleave and reflection, if it did a bit more damage. For a 5 second channel the dps is quite low.
Now it only reflects what’s in front of you (90 degrees) and destroys everything to the sides and behind you, right?
