Anet has mentioned that warriors are where they want them to be, and we are nowhere close to warriors even if we go 100% glass cannon. If we spec glass cannon, with full berserkers, we (us and our pets combined) should be able to match the damage of a warrior who does the same.

Warrior’s ranged main burst comes from their unique class feature, just like we have our pets. You forget that if a warrior builds completely into rifle to pull out these numbers…first, it’s easy to avoid their “burst” in 1v1, and last, they have zero survavility…anyone can kill them.

I have a fully geared ranger and a fully geared warrior.
My warrior has way more survivability than ranger in WvW circumstances, even when my ranger is building as vit oriented set while my warrior is just full glass cannon set.

My warrior has more hp, more armor, free invulnerable utility(no need to trait or be any specific build), 3 secs of invulnerable block, almost always access to swiftness and movement skills from my sword(meaning I have much higher chance of escaping in combat, I can even escape from a stealthy thief in combine with 2 other enemies when I was ambushed and completely off-gaurd), way more reliable condition removal and breakstun abilities, and scores more kills by just using rifles.

As for my ranger, he’s very slow, barely escaping zergs, pet has to stay avoid combat to stay alive so I can swap pet only for quickness, stuck with warhorn (and LB if I want to siege the walls, and by choosing this set of weapons ranger lost half of its survivability), and kill way slower than my warrior’s rifle.

PS: In 1 on 1 situation, my warrior does not use f1, I just simply use endure pain and frenzy and a trait that gives me quickness when the foe’s hp hits 25%, and my opponent just fall to the ground waiting for me to either shoot him to death or flag him while I still have quickness on. I know there’re many bad players in WvW, but simply just using rifle + these 2 utilities will bring me victory most of the time in 1 on 1 situation.

PS2: In a crowded zerg situation, there’s no way you know who the warrior aims, when the warrior aims, and when you have to dodge it.
It’s 1500 range that cannot miss if you do not foresee it.
When it lands, it hits from 10k~20k on all targets in the line.

@ Sdric: You certainly didn’t crit 8k on an auto-attack with your thief. No doubt that’s the result of “Unload.” 1k for an auto-attack on the condition-heavy short bow is very respectable. In short, your pictures don’t mean what you think they mean.

I’d never argue that rangers don’t need a damage boost, but your screenshots don’t demonstrate much.

Auto-attack is the best burst you’re going to get out of a ranger, unless you’re keen on running up there with a sword and praying you don’t get hit.

The pet was pretty bad in early beta. The f2 responsiveness was terrible, the three shouts (all of which are very ordinary even now) weren’t even in the game until after the final BWE (and they recieved no iteration/alterations after their initial appearance) and pet vitality recieved a massive buff after BWE 1 or 2 because it was terrible before that. At no point during the betas was the ranger, as a whole class, anywhere near as complete or operational as most of the other classes.

They were still introducing skills two months prior to launch, never mind working on changing and fixing up the other skills. The greatsword was really good at one point and got a pretty big nerf, but aside from that rangers were never finished enough to polish.

What I believe we have now is a class that was never finished, the pet is a core mechanic but it had serious issues even before launch, traits, skills and builds which interact with it were never able to be tested because the pet wasn’t finished. Rather they bringing it up to par they were nerfing spirits and the greatsword and adding in the final skills. The thieves recieved a major pass over following BWE3 which put them in a very good position at launch (and because they wanted to let the meta settle before making further changed, long after it). The ranger was never able to be deemed “underpowered” or “underwhelming” because it was never complete.

My main is a ranger and I frequently run dungeons with it. I recently got a guardian to 80 and I find it hard to go back to my ranger. The weapon options are far greater, the melee options are more fun, I have several on-weapon combo fields and finishers, I have several useful utility skills and buffs, I have incredible survivability and better DPS than my condition damage ranger. The shortbow nerf hit really hard, looking at other class’ superior DPS at 80 in two DPS stat gear (power and precision with toughness as the surviability stat) compared with my ranger’s three DPS stat gear (power, precision and condition damage), I am really angry at the shortbow nerf. Not only do I have to work very hard to position myself correctly for the effect (and use gumby traps with a pointlessly short range when traited), the overall DPS is lower than a greatsword warrior smashing face and taking hits.

Levelling and solo play the ranger is fine. A well played guardian is just better. More personal survivability, better DPS and less need to roll all around hoping you don’t get face stomped. I can pull eight undead in Orr and fairly easily kill them on my guardian. My ranger would have to work very hard not to die and wouldn’t kill them as fast either. I ran with some warriors in my guild during WvW and they were all testing their rifles. In the same gear, I was hitting for half of what they were hitting for and they were downing people before my pet got halfway to them. When my pet did get close it died almost instantly. Other classes are just better atm.

I do have a warrior, and even if warrior has sightly more HP with full berseker, he has MUCH less survivality than a ranger.
As i said, rifle glass cannon warrior is good for WvW, but in 1v1 situation it’s garbage.

Also the “insane” crits are just on upgraded 80’s, it doesn’t insta kill anyone level 80.

I don’t even remember the last time i got caught by a zerg with my ranger…who the hell uses shortbow against zergs? 95% of the time you won’t apply bleed, DPS wise longbow is better, safer and has more utility…and…has some “burst”, obviously not in the form of 10k insta crit, but it has some burst.

You posted two screenshots comparing apples to potatoes trying to make a point, that’s not productive in any sort of way. Where are the maths on these screenshots? You ask for something you didn’t do yourself.

I’m quite sure you don’t do 65 bleed damage with berseker gear/build. Not even if you put 30 points into Wilderness Survival you will reach 65 bleed damage, you need way more than that.

I also wrote down several equations in other topics.
It’s not like this is the first topic we’re discussing this very subject.

By the way I broke down the damage to dps (1,5s Unload / 3*0,52 attack time Shortbow)*3 = damage amplifier for the Shortbow damage to make it compareable.
Maybe this helps you understanding the equation when you scroll up.

I’m quite sure you don’t do 65 bleed damage with berseker gear/build.

You do know that bleeding damage is calculated on-hit timing?
Don’t you think there is a chance of me having >>Might<< on me when I applied it, which just ran out?

The thing is I LOVE my ranger. Even with all the faults, I will still play her. IT just saddens me that I have to refer friends away from the class. Just the other day I was looking at the trait chart for Thief, Warrior, Guardian and Mesmer and wow… their minor and major traits work so well together and makes them good, especially a Guardian. Just compare each of them side by side to a ranger and you can the major problem. I am always complaining to my friend about my ranger but I always end off the rant with “But I still love my ranger.” and why? Because I have fun with her. That is most important.

And I just noticed how much the class is lacking in general last night because I noticed my play style. As we all know, all humanoid enemies have the same classes we do, such a a Centaur Hunter, Grawl Hunter, etc. I noticed that when I’m in a fight with them, I strafe and dodge out of all their attacks EXCEPT their ranger counterpart. Anyone notice that? Their ele would cast, I walk out of AoE, I interrupt the warrior’s attack, dodge engi’s shots BUT I just stand there and take hits from the ranger’s bow. Why? Because it’s not going to effect me, I’m only getting hit for about 200 HP damage per arrow by a level 80 Ranger in Frostgorge while everyone else hits me for +1K damage without crit.

Thinking about that, it’s just saddens me more. It’s the ranger profession in general that lacks.

What is with all these anti-Ranger posters?

I have at level 80, Ranger, Thief, Guardian, and Warrior, all four 80s in exotic gear.

The sad thing is, all of them, including the Guardian do more damage than my Ranger, and all three of them have better survivability, and the Guardian, and Warrior brings more utility to a group, then a Ranger. A Warrior, and Thief make for a better Ranger than does the Ranger doing as much as four times the damage at range.

The Ranger is good for one thing – bots.

So if you honestly think the Ranger is fine, play one to 80, make a youtube video of you doing good in all aspects of the game WvWvW, sPvP, Dungeons, and random PvE including boss fights, and I’ll make a youtube video of my other three 80s doing it not just better, but MUCH better.

Not all bosses are the same, that one was much weaker defense wise than the ones you find on the rest of dungeons. And 5 stacks of might still don’t give 65 condition damage

As you can see on this screenshot, 7 stacks of might (you had 5) and 100 condition damage from wildness survival still only makes me hit for 60 dmg …/facepalm. You probably had about 200-300 condition in your build in order to reach that amount of bleed damage. By looking at the missing HP i can also tell that ranger didn’t have 15,082 HP which is what you have with full berseker “build”…it probably had around 16.5k-17k, so it either didn’t have berseker gear completely or it had many trait points used on Wildness Survival and Nature.

I wasn’t even using proper traits/runes having only 50% critical damage on this screenshot (90-100%+ crit dmg on a PvE ranger), that boss was even weaker defense wise than light golems and you can crit these for 1k+ easily with pretty much half the critical damage than what a PvE char can have…so yeah, do the maths.

After playing other classes the only thing rangers do better is we have a smarter and better controlled pets and I know that’s not saying much because they are one of our biggest handscapes in the game. Neco pets are very dumb and just don’t listen to commandes you give them. I like my ranger alot but there nothing I do that some other class does better

But ranger is still very fun class to play just maybe the funnest class in the game . I’ve only played 4 class some were more like going work then having fun. So maybe that’s what we do best.

The Thief can struggle in dungeons, but it is doable. The ability to drop agro instantly with stealth is extremely nice.

I usually switch into a bleed build for dungeons though.

Yes, it’s obviously doable but they are still the bottom line for it. I know many people who plays thief and retired it from dungeons/pve completely. They certainly need to be buffed in PvE.

It’s not just ranger the only class that needs fixes, most of the classes (if not all) need them in one way or another. Also the only way to fix a class is not boosting the damage, balance comes in many ways.

Pets are what makes rangers unique, just like every class has its own feature. I’d rather they work on the pets a lot than buffing ranger damage and making it the two shotting sniper.
“IF” warrior can do that, then people who wants to play that way already has a class suited for them, there is no need to do the same with rangers.

I agree with you there. I tend to go into dungeons on my Warrior, or Guardian.

I have a very long list of things that all the classes need, mostly to do with weapons, and useless attacks/abilities. Especially weapon abilities that root you in place.

To give you an idea, and show that I’m not biased. My biggest pet peeve as an example for the Guardian. THE STAFF needs to change. Wave of Wrath should be a PBAoE centered on the Guardian, Orb of Light should be changed into a ranged AoE, that explodes when it makes contact with its first target, Symbol of Swiftness should apply the swiftness like a shout, while putting a symbol at the feet of the Guardian, Empower should be a shout, that heals immediately instead of taking the Guardian out of the fight for its channel duration, and Line of Warding is fine.

Let’s see… we have 100,500 pets and we can give the order back to you. You can use 2 of them. This is fun? Almost all classes have pets too. Anyway. And you’re, well… keep an eye(?) on him so he did not die. In fact, you just use 6 when u need to and and F3 in hope that he will have time to come back. In fact, from him more problems than benefit. Choosing of pet large, but we still use only a few viable for certain situations (bears, devourers, linx, wolves).

Well. And that fan is over….

What else do we have… Boring and unbalanced weapon, which usually uses only 1. Fun weapons nerfed to ugliness. The lowest in-game damage. The smallest choose of utility (only trap + couple of others). Terrible tree of traits, In which the majority of lines just useless, and in the right lines set of traits is still terrible.
All is curves, dull, weak, useless. Where is fan? I don’t get.
I found ALL the other classes fun. But not Ranger. Which archetype I played in more than 5 other online projects.

There remains only the fact that the ranger – is guy in leather with a bow. Is this fun?

Seriously. I do not understand people who still justify the class saying “hey, it’s not so bad.” I would not believe that they were playing some other class on the 80th and they know what they say.

I like the class, not the look. I have warrior, necro and working on a guardian…but the one i like the most is ranger. I’ve played archers/rangers in plenty of mmorpgs (P2P or F2P), and pretty much all of them were about the same burst machine that dies if that same burst didn’t kill your target…it gets really boring.

I don’t need to play the class that does the most damage (burst) in order to enjoy it. As Himei said it’s a matter of taste.

That’s good that you have other characters then. I myself have a low guardian and warrior and still found them OP compared to a Ranger.

And no, I don’t role play. I can leave that to other people. I’m a ranger/Bow fan. It will be the first class in play in any game/mmo that has this class regardless of effectiveness. I enjoy the class, love my dumb pets and weapon skills. Plus with that logic, I COULD be a thief, they wear medium and can use a bow. Nature? who cares about that, only nature like skill I use is Healing Spring, lol. But if you want nature, I could be a Thief in medium with a bow as a Sylvari… can’t get anymore closer to that.

Why all the dislike to rangers? Because people are different and playing ranger does not suit everyone’s mindset/interest etc. aand then there are those that worry about stats and so on but I enjoy my ranger immensely. I use spirits because I like them. I know some people say they are bad but I enjoy them and that is all I need to enjoy playing ranger.

That is my personal opinion so feel free to trash it if it does not suit you.

So I have one lvl 80 character, a lvl 80 ranger (others are just lvl ~40-50), and here is what i dislike

1. Spirits: “nice I can be good support” – nah spirits die way to fast and their effects are not that great → making them in comparison to other utillities useless
2. melee: “yeah i’ll just swing my greatsword an do massive damage” – until you get one-hitted by an enemy. The one handed sword even forces you into an animation and you can’t do anything about it → no defense+medium damage= nearly useless(could be fun)

3. resulting from point 1 and 2 we get like 1 maybe 2 usefull builds who are kind of competitive with other classes and with the “shortbow-animation-fix” this options seem to slowly become useless and result in people leaving the ranger class

=> we could use a buff ;_;

Because it feels weak and squishy.

Because they don’t do much damage.

Because I can’t put my pet away, out it comes everytime I stub my toe.

Because my town clothes change to my armour and my pet pops back when I trip over a twig.

Because I have to swop weapons or pets to gain a 2 second (Or whatever it is) speed boost.

Because I can’t use the terrain like a Ranger would (Invulnerable).

Because a blade of grass can cause an obstruction.

Jumping puzzles, love them or hate them, I hate them. Thread killer.

Firstly, the Ranger is a great class. In PvE it’s a monster that can down monsters well above its level. And pets lend a level of tanking & utility that some classes dream of.

BUT…its bow mechanics are boring, auto-attack being the best damage skill. LB is really slow and lacks the punch you’d expect from such a slow wep. Pets are buggy in that they can’t attack while moving and their F2 responsiveness is slow. Greatsword used to be, well…great. Now it’s like swinging a tree branch. Spirits are incredibly lackluster and our signets are the weakest in the game.

These are the primary complaints. Anet knows them and we’re all hoping to see big improvements on the 15th. Rangers are still fun to play and probably the easiest in PvE. Enjoy what you got and maybe they’ll get even better soon.

I’ve already posted about your screenshots Sdric, they are ridiculous and funny because there is no way that ranger has full berseker and power/crit traits (you said it was full berseker on the original thread) as i was doing crits on that boss for 1.5k+ (1.7-1.9k if i’m not wrong when having 20-25 sigil stacks) unbuffed, and the pet never died on that boss and hits much harder.

I have full berserker’s and this is about what I get

Shortbow: 1 – 1.5k crits
Longbow: 1.8 – 2.4k crits. ~4 – 6k from Rapid Fire assuming all shots hit which most if the time isn’t the case.

Pet wise I use the Jaguar as DPS. When it’s alive and gets attacks off it lands crits in the range of 1.5 – 2k.

In WvW/PvP take these values and cut them in half. This is due to half your shots not even hitting targets thanks to the obstructed bug. Pets are useless because anyone that knows how to fight a ranger just keeps moving which means the pet can never hit them.

Pfff… all can do this. S(!)PvE – do not forget to specify. In the dungeons ranger just worst class of all. I do not go to the dungeon by ranger, just out of respect to other players, knowing that the rangers – the loss of the slot.
And it is unpleasant.
Yes, it is good in spve. But not the best. Classes such as Warrior, Mesmer, cond Necromancer, and especially Guardian feel much better. For example Guardian can simultaneously kill many times more mobs than the ranger, 20-50% faster and spend less HP at same time.
Necromancer can kill a surprising number of mobs at once, that the rangers will only cry quietly in a corner, drooling.

utility that some classes dream of? Dude, are you kidding? Half of the ranger’s utility absolute rubbish, to which even sorry to spend skill points. The most useless utility of all classes. More than half do not needed at all.

About other problems do not want to even mention.

These numbers are sort of accurate, except RF, it changes a lot depending on how many crits you actually get, but on average yeh 4-6k is about right.
The damage i was talking about was from the Mad King boss which had extremelly low defense, it was quite normal to see RF do above 10-12k on that boss.

Take it easy. Let’s look at the engineer – a class with 30 points of fixes.
Melee damage in Tank(!) build of about 2000-2000-4000K auto attack, 4k with 3 +confusion (about 1k damage on skill use). Ranger with gs in GLASS build is about 1200-1200-1400 and 2k with 2. Have longer def CD then engineer.

Grenades (I compare them with the longbow because of the possibility to miss (but that’s up to you and not the mechanics). Initial distance attack 1500. Throws for 3 grenades. Causes each to 1000-1300 (depending on abillity) critical damage (3000-4000aoe dmg). Puts bleed and invul x3-5. Ability of tool belt causes about 6-8k critical hit damage with a huge radius (+1500 chain aoe with some trait).

Rifle. 2k crit damage from 1 (3/4 speed). In the melee – damage with three 4.2-4.5k + 5 bleed. 5 ability – about 8-9k AoE damage. All instant, all have chanse to set blind, bleed, burn.

Flamethrower. 3k damage over 2 seconds, perma burn (500 damage even without cond-d equip). About 7k damage with 2. Perma +200 thougness and 5-8 perma might.

3.5k aoe bombs 1/2 sec, 100500 immobil, bleeding, burn, blind, invul, lots of buffs, great opportunities of support, cond removal, healing and so on…
And this class has twice as many fixes than ranger. You know. In what sense then compare ranger with the thief, whose damage and mobility even more.

Simply put, the most clumsy class in the game has double the damage, up to 100 times more support and mobility than the ranger. There is reason to think…

I think you might be confused. I’m not arguing that the ranger is fine. I want it fixed. I have stopped playing the game because my Ranger is useless for the most part and waiting for these so called fix patches.

Lions Arch, Go to the PvP area (Fort Marriner) and it’s the large purple portal (far left one on the map) called Heart of the Mist.

I remember also being able to enter from my character screen using the PvP tab but for some reason I don’t see it anymore. Maybe it’s because I’m in Lions Arch? Not sure.

Your reading skills aren’t quite up to snuff, so let me clarify. PvE means Player vs Environment…there is no sPvE…you’re thinking of sPvP.

I said pets lend utility that other classes would love, not that our utilities are great. Our utilities are generally rubbish (I even mentioned spirits & signets being awful). But our pets are versatile and we can have 2 at a time. That’s nice.

I typed 2 sentences pro-Ranger and then a paragraph explaining its problems. Yet you seemed to have missed that. I never said Ranger was better than Necro or Guardian either, let alone that they’re “the best” so I’m confused why you felt the need to throw that in there.

They removed that tab with halloween event, you can find it now on top left side of your screen, it’s like two swords.

Thief can offer to the group a very good damage, the use of poisons for the allies, the stealth to avoid unwanted pacs and easily raise downed players. And also a very good opportunity to keep the target in constant blind… kind of tanking. And what ranger can offer?

If you doubt the damage – it is easy to solve. Calculate damage each ability thief and hunter per minute (imagine that all critical or not critical). Done same to pet. And compare the numbers. For example, if a thief in 1.5 seconds does 6500 damage auto attack dagger, and a ranger for a two-handed sword 3900 per two seconds, plus pet 1500 per 2 seconds. Altogether it is a 260.000 per min by dagger thief and 162.000 by GS ranger plus pet.
4333.3 dps thief and 2700 ranger. feel the difference? Repeat with other abilities. Timed how many you can use per minute. And so on.
By the way, I forgot to count poison from thief’s AA. That plus ~6000 for a minute.

There are things like farming in Orr and there are things like dungeons. Different things. Solo and group. solo PvE and group PvE.

Our pets, in fact, uncomfortable replacing things like 6000K crit with toolbelt skill, of 12% damage/crit from adrenaline and the ability with 21.000 crit. This is about the same damage, but it as though separated and running next to you. Yes, he can tank (but you must agree, pretty bad most of times), it is a plus. But for this we donate ~40% of our own damage. Fair?

Megazlo, no matter what people says you are simply going to say ranger is the worst at this and that, so it’s pointless to argue.

You probably know more than people who mains thief. Go to their forum and tell them your “theorycrafting” damage and survivality, they will probably butcher you overnight.

To make it simple, not everything is about who has it bigger.

My first level 80 was a ranger, but I switched to guardian. My guardian can take down 5+ mobs in a few seconds no problem, but my ranger’s damage just can’t compare. I like the guardians’ flashy animations while the rangers’ are kind of boring (greatsword and sword are cool though). The majority of heavy armor looks awesome while only a few pieces of medium armor look good. I’m looking forward to the update though. Hopefully it will make me spend more time on my ranger again!

I’ve been playing Ranger since the beta weekends and still loving the class even though I can see and feel a lot of the problems it has.
Running dungeons more than anything at the moment so here is my build/tactrics.

Currently running a Power/Precision build
wearing full exotic Beserker’s crafted gear with ruby orbs
using SB / LB combo, exotic Ghastly, with ruby orbs
in dungeons I use polar bear and Brown bear (mostly for survivability)
I use Healing Spring, Quickening Zephyr, Signet of the Wild, Signet of Renewal (or Signet of Stone depending on situation) and Rampage as One.

Traits: Skills:
20 1, 7
30 1, 5, 8
5
0
15 6

The way I play:
I constantly switch weapons and pets.
I try to keep on the move so I don’t have to dodge as much.
I use QZ on every cooldown

Personally, my damage doesn’t seem very high at all, but my party seem to think I’m doing extremley well for a Ranger. Especially in Catacombs when the Troll appears and i switch to SB/Axe+Warhorn for speed and slowdown, then proceed to kite the heck out of it while everyone else wails on it.

My bet is that we, rangers, are punished because of bots and that’s the main reason why people hate this class now. It’s not really out fault that they can’t deal with bots and should not nerf us, because the can’t.

Yeah, sure. Sometimes nerf is needed, but now without a buff for something else. Ranger is quite bugged (not like a necro, but still), and nerfs without something in return are just… plain unreasonable.
