Thief vs Revenant
gw1 – healing signet/frenzy/charge
The problem with revs is they fill thief role in pvp while bringing team support and great presence in team fights which thieves can’t do. Not to mention they have every tool to deal with thieves. A good rev should never lose to thief in 1v1 at least.

In actuality thief seems to counter rev. We can deny their bursts, break their defense and essence sap is otherworldly strong.
Unfortunately revenant is still a little op so a lot of times they still win.
A single precision strike landed and the fight is pretty much over.
If there wasn’t precision strike for revs the matchup would be even.

Yup, improv with the stolen skill can wreck a rev. I play S/P though so it depends whether they run the stab on dodge trait, if they don’t it’s a pretty even fight.
Don’t follow me, unless you enjoy being chased by angry men with sticks.
Power Build Condi Build
PvP is not all about 1v1. Even if prec strike was nerfed i don’t think thieves would be taken in teams.

Your goal is to evade / range every precision strike. If you can do that, Rev is pretty free to Thief.

If it’s an invoc rev, I’d say thief typically has the advantage in a 1 v 1. If the rev is ret, then the thief should just run.
But regardless of how a 1 v 1 goes with a rev, revs have the advantage in terms of overall usefulness in PvP since they’re so much more useful in team fights while also having decent roaming abilities.

^ This is the answer, OP.
rev need a nerf they spike to hard for all the defence they have
Like Cynz said, a good Rev/Herald should beat a Thief with or without Precision Strike being as broken as it is (tracking us even when cast after we stealth).
A Rev/Herald has almost as much to offer as any Thief in terms of mobility, it’s got just as good (burst) damage and it has way more to offer in team support.
Only time a Thief will have the upper hand is when stealth is “needed” and unlikely to be countered, like say… In a WvW/GvG Focus Party. Even then, a Rev/Herald paired up with 1 or 2 thieves is worth experimenting with.
So yes, a Thief can beat a Rev if they got the same skill, but a Rev has the tools to gain and keep the upper hand, al whilst being more useful to the rest of the team if it’s not stealth that you’re after.
As to who needs nerfs… Well, both really. Our Dagger and Staff AA damage is just ridiculous in WvW scenarios and slightly less so in PvP (lower stats in PvP sort of help out). Rev has ridiculous damage and heat-seeking projectiles on Precision Strike and Hammer AA’s that hit as hard as our Dagger/Staff AA’s, but from a safe 1200 range and also seemingly heat-seeking with an ability to round corners and break LoS if the cast starts on time.
That said, we also both need buffs in other departments…
It’s a flip of the coin if both are good players and it always depends on the scenario/situation. But from a fresh-starting 1v1 or teamfight, the Rev is definitely the better pick in most of those scenarios/situations. [/WallOfText]
I guess I’m in an odd boat with this one. I find that I beat most revs decisively. I just pressure like crazy with cc to back it up and I am rarely forced to go on the defensive. That usually does it. If they get the jump on me I just dodge a few times during their burst and go back to bursting. Don’t let them control the fight. You do.
Thief
I agree, but maybe it’s because I also play rev. I find their skills way too easy to predict and counter/dodge. Staff 5 is the only skill that catches me off guard often.
- pro meta d/p can 1v1 invoc reve but it takes time usually
- overall thief builds are destroyed by invoc reve
- reve phase travel, staff5 burst > steal backstab burst
- rev handles pressure, thief has to disengage
- non d/p thieves can’t disengage vs reve if they make a mistake
- neither of these calsses need buffs, both need nerfs and trait redesigns
- combining d/p with reve can be a good idea to coordinatedly obliterate people (requires TS). Booful theft → no stab/prot target dies to spike
- thief still can’t take even fights, revenant carryes those.
Rev is better than thief in the sense that it has that team support that thief doesn’t. Also rev is an overall better duelist than thief is. If we are talking about thief vs Rev 1v1, I think I’ve maybe lost 1 or 2 1v1’s with a rev and those were because they caught me fresh out of a fight with low health or Surprised the kitten out of me. other than that ill kill a rev 1v1 every time providing i’m don’t do something kittened like blow my dodges senselessly. Thieves have a lot of utility to use to kitten with revs and open them up for strikes. So yeah I think Thief counters rev in most 1v1 scenarios but Rev has overall better team utility and can do thief’s job.
My opinion, for if your having rev trouble just adjust your playstyle a little, do a little research on what rev skills look like and use your skills accordingly to what they’re doing. Rev is probably the only class I’d bother engaging in a 1v1 without worrying too much (not that I do it a lot, I still tend to shy away from needless 1v1’s especially as a thief)
