Steps to reproduce:
This is obviously bugged behavior and makes platforming incredibly frustrating. I’ve noticed it both before and after today’s (5/1) patch and only after yesterday’s (4/30) patch.
I’ve attached a screenshot with a convenient place to test this in Lion’s Arch, just south of Fort Marriner’s eastern gate.

This has been seriously kittening me when I’m attempting jump puzzles. I’ll fall, everything seems fine, I take a quick step and fall again, I panic, and I’m dead/in the water/back to the beginning. A great example is after you kill the two oozes in a BL jump puzzle and fall to the little precipice before jumping to the adjacent cliff.
I’ve definitely been having this happen all evening – there have been times where I’d fall, get up, and the proceed to faceplant and take damage multiple times in a row. I’ve been seeing it happen rather inconsistently, though – I can jump off of the same place a dozen times in a row (I like to jump off the bridge leading to the asura portals in LA) and have it happen about half the time, but not the other half.
I have also taken fall damage multiple times from this – I’d take damage the first time I fell, and then again after getting up and faceplanting again.
I too have been seeing this and have posted video of the bug in action. This bug takes several forms, but essentially boils down to the game not registering fall damage until after the character takes one step. If the character takes several short jumps in a row without taking a step between them, as soon as they take one step they will take all of the accrued fall damage at once.
This means that several small jumps that would not normal kill a player because they would be able to heal between them, will prove lethal.
Please see this video for in-game footage of the bug at work, as well as handy places to test this bug for yourself. http://youtu.be/pn3vjzNAuqc
Make sure to watch my health as I take NO damage from the fall, but am them immediately hit with multiple ticks to my health the second I take a step. I even fall, get up and receive boons from my signet passive, take a step, and fall over dead.
As Jump Puzzles are included in the Monthly Achievement, this is going to be highly problematic for many players. It also makes the Borderlands Puzzle nearly impossible as it includes many small, closely spaces jumps.
I’ve had this happen from both large (JP in Metrica Province) and little falls, anything where youo would normally take damage when you land. You fall, get the land kerthud animation, then stand up with no damage. But when you take a step, you get the land kerthud animation again, and take the damage.
Also worth noting that skills cannot be used until you take a step and receive the fall damage. I jump down far enough to face plant, and was not to use skills even after my character stood back up. The only skills my mesmer was able to use was a pre-charged mantra’s 2 uses and shatters (which are useless with no castable illusions and enter a 3s CD). Even insta-cast stunbeakers like Decoy and Blink would not cast.
I actually thought this was a simple lag/delay in the fall damage being applied, but it’s clearly a more complex bug.
Had this happen once or more.
I fall (and face plant), take a step and get the fall animation again.
Thought it was funny.
But i can get the problems it can cause.

Yes, I too have been having this problem too since the April 30th patch as a thief with falling damage on. On long distance falls I will either hit the ground with no black powder then my character will appear back midair and fall the right way (Damage does not double).
I was doing a jumping puzzle in wv3 bl red and towards the end you have to drop down the edge of a wall towards the end and land on a ledge to try and jump to the other ledge. Well I kept having to re-live this fall over and over. Every time I would go to move after the fall on the ledge it would restart the fall and move me.
This is not just viewed from your own character I have seen other people do this as well in WvW. They appear to fall and then poof they are back mid-air and fall again.
I’ve experienced this too multiple times – although I think I received the damage twice. I actually experienced it myself and then watched a pursuing WvW attacker fall down, then warp back up, and then fall back down again.
I’ve experienced this bug as well; it seems to work exactly as the OP described. I think I’ve experienced the bug during the Grenth boss fight as well.
Reminder to self: do not attempt Griffonrook Run any time soon.
Noticed this while dropping down a cliff in wvw, to shortcut a bit.
I found this bug incredibly frustrating, and it seemed to have started right after the April 30 update.
Mmmhmmm, this bug is very unpleasant!
I found another thread yesterday discussing this bug, and posted there:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Movement-while-sliding-resets-position
Oh, also found this thread on the Reddit forums:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1dkhh5/unable_to_activate_skills_as_if_disconnecting_but/
It seems to be related to a positioning issue that has also shown itself quite prevalently when using the engineer’s jump shot, you’ll land quite a bit away from the target spot you designated, but as soon as you move you warp to where you would have landed.
Had the same problem in WvWs.
If Anet wants to test this themselves, the waterfall puzzle where you drop through a small hole in the ground onto a platform, it is easily repeatable there (& a pain in the kitten … )
I often find myself falling off things, and doing a faceplant. But I don’t think they were jumping puzzles. That seems like an annoying bug, also a bug I seen is where I take a little more HP loss when falling than I actually have.. Just sayen’
Oh, wow. I never noticed that before. I’m infected too. Weird. That’s no good. I am POSITIVE my shoe laces are tied, so what’s tripping me?
I did a dodge roll after falling. No problem. It is the first walking step AFTER the dodge roll that drops me on my face and gives me the fall damage.
I’ve seen this multiple times since the April 30th patch, most notably in WvW. As other posters have noted, it’s inconsistent, just when you think it has gone away, you get it again. Please fix this.
Just wanted to add that besides having this happen regularly to me in PVE on my norn, I had the following sequence happen tonight in Eternal Battlegrounds WvW:
-attempted to fall off the outside wall of our overlook on purpose to leave our base
-was suddenly teleported back inside onto the ground in front of the stairs leading up to said wall
-the death cry from a long fall plays in the background and just fades out after it’s done
-rinse and repeat several times, at which point I relogged and it disappeared
JPs have been a pain for me since the update. Any puzzle where falling is part of the puzzle causes me to go into an endless loop of falling – in Troll’s End JP this killed me, since it was refusing to let me jump to break the cycle (which is the only way I’ve found so far).
With JPs as part of the current monthly, this is -really- annoying.
Yeah this bug is really annoying. While it’s not deadly as long as you know about the bug, it is still very strange and disturbs/destroys the atmosphere while playing.
I can confirm seeing this bug on a lvl 80 Sylvari Necromancer. Please fix.
I can also now confirm that this bug killed me in the Pirate Puzzle in LA, I fell down the water fall, and the moment I stepped on “dry” land I fell again onto the land, dying instantly. Please fix!
Since the latest update I’m having a lot of frustrating issues with falling damage, and the overall falling. It’s simple: I jump, don’t get falling damage while I should have gotten it, but I’m still knocked down for the seconds. If I’m lucky I stand up, walk a bit and then I get knocked down again and receive the falling damage. If I don’t, I get magically teleported to the place I stood before I jumped, I just died because of this bug at the end of the pirate JP in LA…
No, it’s not lagg, skill casting is working as it should.
Is anyone else having this problems?
me
One jump puzzle i was jumping across some orbs (quaggan jp) and i inexplicably died i saw myself laying on a orb, my friend saw me dead on the ground..
My friend could even resurrect me, as soon as she did i was magically teleported back up to the orb on her screen, on mine i never moved, neither of us were lagging at all, very weird stuff happening..
I’ve slid down a hill, taking falling damage in slight increments the entire way down, then get to the bottom and I end up sliding a few feet (I still have a quarter HP bar left at this point) and poof, Dead.
Something is definitely buggy with falling damage.
Same here. This happens frequently now..
I’ve had that a few times, and I was also under the impression that it very recently got worse. Today I did the second half of my monthly jumping puzzles and was zoomed up/down with/without falling damage like crazy.
(In some cases I fell without taking any damage although I clearly should have (branded mine) and in other cases I fell off the same thing 3 times in a row (kept getting warped back up) and then ended up still standing upstairs (Southsun Cove)… no idea what is going.)
Yep, also posted here too
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Serious-fall-damage-bug
Is this being looked into?
I never noticed this until I stumbled upon the post. Then I tested it and, sure enough, it was happening to me. I am all better now, so they have at least made partial progress (My Main – Male Charr Warrior – is good anyway. Haven’t tested all 7 Alts).
EDIT: Nope – still getting it intermittently on my Male Charr Warrior. I fell WAY farther than I intended and took no damage. I knew that if I took a step I’d fall dead on my face. So I went to a nearby waypoint as an experiment, and took a step. Nothing! No fall damage!
I am getting this on all my other alts as well, but have not experienced the looping effect yet. That sounds like all sorts of fun.

I just had this happen to me last night off the cliff from Cloven Hoof Pass towards Stoneman’s Notch in Harathi Hinterlands, it was right on the cliff leading toward the vista from Cloven Hoof on the right. (east of Trebusha’s waypoint).
I slipped off the top of the cliff and took a bunch of falling damage about 45% off my health, I just let my char fall and went with it, then I took a step to continue on and suddenly I was back on top of the cliff falling again, this time I took less damage and slid right into the water, before I could even move or recover from that I was instantly back on top of the cliff falling again for even more damage. Luckily I survived all of this, but I still had only a sliver of health left.
I’ve never had this happen to me before and I’ve never seen or heard of it from anyone I know.
This occurred on the Mac client for me, have not confirmed pc yet, but I imagine all these peeps are pc peeps.
Word on this would be lovely
(edited by Kyllaa.1385)
I’m also experiencing this issue. I’ve been playing the game since beta and only really noticed it as of the last major patch. Something in the last major update either introduced the bug or brought it to the surface and made it more prevalent, it would seem.
I agree, this is fairly new and the only time I had this fall reset fall again activity was in the 2nd world in the SAB and only associated with falling in the rushing rapids.
This was the first time I saw it ever and I’ve played since bwe1 as well.
Never experienced this before April 30, it happens all the time with long falls. Even with some not long falls, I’ve died jumping off the cliff in front of the NW tower in WvW borderlands which is not consistent with the fall distance.
I changed my video card at about this time. Good that it’s Anet’s fault. I only have these problems in WvW.
you fall from high land walk off fall again and take damage, lol just after april patch
Been posting on the ‘jump looping’ thread which has just been merged with this (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/jump-looping/first). That was getting at a similar problem, I’ll copy the OP of that below:
’Since the latest patch, I have been finding that after a large jump or a fall, my character is warped back to their original position before jumping again. I know this occurred previously in orr, when jumping towards an invisible wall, but this is occurring in the pirate and troll’s end jumping puzzle now. Also on vistas. The other members of my guild have also had this occur.
This continues even after death, and only stops if I manage to run out of the original path before it loops again.
There seems to be no correlation between character race or profession and no skills are used before jumping. I have no idea why it keeps occurring. I can’t really take a screen shot as it just looks like I’m jumping.
Any help would be appreciated.’
I’ve been having this problem a lot, just doing the jumping puzzles today for my monthly out of 5 I had looping problems on all of them (in one case 4 out 4 attempts got looping before I gave up).
We had someone post a video of exactly what happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsANqpVNKIM. – although this is more your damage bug, in our case its glitching so that you character does the same jump again and again until the cumulative fall damage kills you.
Its not a problem of damage the bug that we were talking about, but it probably is related to yours. One of the poster on our thread had an idea that its part of the teleporting code gone wrong, which would cover both of our bugs. Have you guys been having this same problem?

Happens a lot on WvW almost like you take double damage.
It seems to only happen when you fall kind of close to the cliff and far. Jumping off the vista cliff in a BL Garrison works fine, as does many short jumps. But this is pretty crippling in WvW. To reproduce it, spend like 5 minutes in any map. It gets hairy when trying to ambush or get away or if you do get ambushed.
Here’s a video of Jump Looping, and how to recreate it:
Step 1: Start “Casting” a weapon skill
Step 2: Jump forward and swap weapons in the air (interrupting the skill)
Step 3: Swap back to the original weapon, keep running forward, then jump!
Suddenly, you’re b-b-b-back, in time! :O
It’s the same issue causing everything (the game doesn’t realize you’re done falling/not in the air). The only difference is that this is triggered by skills that are interrupted midair.
This is something that happens a lot more than you would think. Most of us don’t think twice about swapping weapons while jumping around, usually for swiftness or stealth. However, the game teleports you back without your momentum (you won’t be moving forward enough to complete the jump any more), which means you’ll just fall down from a random point in the air! If you’re in a jumping puzzle, this will seriously mess you up.
P.S. This is not the only way to trigger Jump Looping, chances are lots of things (swiftness/death shroud/mist form/utility skills) can all confuse the new game falling protocol. They really made some errors with this last patch!
I hope it can be fixed!
(edited by Archangelus.8671)
Guardian jump (GS 3) and teleport skills can also trigger the effect, with skills not working and then random damage.
Jumping puzzles are becoming a nightmare, and I’m already a chunky charr.
I’ve managed to survive a looping jump by moving out the path inch by inch and falling into the water (sharkmaw caverns) at all times my guildie wasn’t so lucky and died after hitting the bottom. And then looped as I was trying to revive them.
At first I thought it was my lag but it doesn’t appear to be related.
This bug doesn’t consistently occur across the world, or even a map. For example, it tends to happen in Eternal Battlegrounds but I’ve never had it happen in the Heart of the Mists. Even in EB, there are some areas where it will occur and others it won’t.
The fastest way to check if you (or the area) is bugged is to:
Jump from one spot to another (flat ground is fine) and do not be attempting to move upon landing. After landing, if you can’t activate your auto-attack or any skills, then you’re in an area where the jumping bug will occur. Taking a step will allow you to use your skills again.

When I experienced the issue, I was using my engi in a pve map. I don’t think I was swapping weapons (since I can’t, nor swapping packs) or doing anything special at all other than running off a cliff to move along the base to get to the start of a vista (Harathi Hinterlands).
That being said, it very well could be possible I had a grenade pack on and took it off, but I really don’t think I was doing that.
I’ve been very careful to not jump off cliffs so much since I got lucky during my first and last bout, but if I can replicate it, I’ll report back… However, it seems enough peeps are having this issue to merit further investigation from Anet, especially considering they already merged the jump loop threads.
I’ve ran into this bug recently as well – it has not killed me yet but I think it may be related to another bug I’ve ran into (I did loop fall twice and that almost killed me). I recently tried to complete the Diving Master. Went about it very methodically using a list from the wiki, doing each jump (even some I know I’d done previously) and checking it off the list. Several times I jumped and occasionally I would have armor and weapons not return when the jump completed. Sometimes it lagged by only a handful of seconds but once or twice I got out of the water in my diving suit and wandered around. I also distinctly remember that at least once I looped back to the top of the jump and fell again. I noticed that when I had finally checked all of the dives off, I had been credited with 35 dives. According to the wiki the maximum number of dives is 36 (even though it says 37). My problem is that don’t remember which dive looped on me and even then, I’m not sure that’s the dive I didn’t get credit for since I had more than one glitch.
This is probably one of the only times I’ve ever been legitimately bothered by a bug on a regular basis. The skill-lock doesn’t even need you to take falldamage. If you just land from certain jumps – even if it’s on level ground – you simply can’t cast anything. It hasn’t killed me (yet), but it has thrown off my rhythm countless times already.
And of course the falldamage itself, and the constant rubberbanding. It’s just overall obnoxious and happens WAY too often in standard gameplay to go unattended.
Tried to slowly jump my way down a cliff near a Vista in Timberline Falls last night and this glitch hit me in full effect. Damage, warp, damage, warp, damage, warp. It’s the most obnoxious bug that I’ve ever encountered in this game, yet it’s never been addressed and after multiple fixing updates, Anet hasn’t done anything about it.
If this game weren’t free to play after the initial purchase, I’d have held off paying more til it were fixed.
I found a way around this bug in the WvW BL JP where it affects the ledges on the sloped hill with two oozes on top, on the way to the lower half key. As it is now, and has been since the April 30 patch, after you drop down to one of the ledges, any attempt to move or jump will rubberband the character back on top of the hill, from where the character then slides back to the ledge, or possibly into the water below, thus making the JP undoable.
Playing a mesmer, I planted a portal on top of the hill before jumping down on a ledge. Once on the ledge, I planted the other end of the portal and used it to go back on top of the hill, then immediately used the portal again to go back to the ledge. After that I could move normally on the ledge.
This demonstrates that the bug is related to the termination of the fall state. There appears to be more than just one mechanism to change the state, possibly even more than one related states, and the April 30 patch introduced a bug in one of the transitional paths, making the state machine occasionally go ‘out of synch’.
For the QA team, I would recommend testing the issue on those particular ledges as they reproduce the issue consistently. While it can be encountered anywhere, most occurrences seem to be stochastic in nature.
This happens to me about 95% of the time I take a fall that would cause damage. It needs to go away. Forever.
