ok well, i managed to find a legit VPN, this as you ca see took about an hour. i have been able to download the patch now, the total patch size of the last 3 files appears to be 30.1mb, my comp would download 32-34mb before it went to 0 download speed.
To me this says there is a problem within the installer, i would say it is checking for a region when installing. as australia is in the middle of no where we have no region as such and thus it is not installing. if this is the problem, add an additional case where if no region is found default to NA (as this would make no difference to the gameplay since we can change server once the game is running)
2 things to say: first, cmon now anet you’re better than this. if my assessment of the situation is right or not. this is the first time i’ve had this issue, clearly you’ve changed something about this 1 patch. after 3 years i would of thought you’d have this down by now.
second thing is thus, if it is as i stated. it may be using the computers region setting to determine the region. If this is so you can change your computers region setting within region and time settings as i recall. This is by no means a fix, i have no way of testing it its just a theory, there are also many other ways they could be determining the region. it’s also completely possibly that i’m completely wrong and this is not the issue.
I assume anet staff as asleep at the moment? (literally, not being insulting i mean i think it’s night there so they’re probably sleeping)
It would be good to get some sort of official feedback from anet to at least acknowledge there’s an issue here.

I used to get this problem a lot, it especially happens to people outside of North America trying to connect to their patch servers. Their patch servers are really notoriously antagonistic towards non-NA connections. It used to be really bad but has been better recently.
Anyway the work around I heard about from before trying to solve the problem is to use a VPN for patching. So I downloaded a free one (today was tunnelbear) turned it on and patched fine, then turned it off.
It should work for you too.

This worked for my girlfriend, she was having the same issue.
Location:Australia.
She used a VPN that she already has. It’s a paid one called Private Internet Access.
Changed region to California, worked straight away.

Just adding my name to this thread as another person who’s having problems with it. I’m going to try the VPN solution(it worked with another MMO a while ago that I was having similar issues with), but we shouldn’t have to do that to play a game that is freely available in Australia.

If you are still experiencing this issue, please run the client with -log appended to the end of the Target field of the Guild Wars 2 client shortcut (see attachment). After letting it run for about a minute with the patching issue, shut it down and pull the log from the following location and attach it to your post: c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.log
If you don’t know how to attach a file to your post, click the “More posting and formatting options” button, then “Choose File” under “Attachments”

Thanks for highlighting the work around. However we still need to report issues like this so that they can be addressed. It doesn’t help either us or the developers if we have to constantly resort to 3rd party workarounds.

Hi, Australian player still having the same download issue. Gets to 32mb then drops download speed to 0kb. Have not tried the patch yet, but do not feel I should really have to as this is clearly an anet issue.

I managed to resolve this by running the 64-bit launcher just to update (put it in your install folder so it doesn’t try to reinstall the entire game). I switched back to the 32 bit launcher after and it was all good.

Playing from Sydney Australia. Tried using Google DNS servers, changing IP addresses and commands in the .exe target, reset adapter, diagnose repair adapter ETC. always stopped and dropped to 0kb at 32mb then nothing.
Used Tunnel Bear browsing as North America and patched in under 10sec.
Really dissapointed at the lack of official assistance but so glad Tunnel Bear worked

I’m having this issue too, last 2 files simply will not download at all no matter how many times I ty. Hits zero kb/s soon as 33mb gets up. Have got a ticket going and tried up to 6 things they wanted me try but still nothing, has been 2 days. I am frustrated and hope we get compensated for this.
