I never got banned before, never been racist. Just offended people who was defending WoW in pointless arguments.
Someone pressed on their ban hammer button 2 times.

I got banned for 2 weeks also for racial slurs that even if I said (don’t remember saying them) I really doubt they were worth 2 weeks of ban

Yeah it’s really frightening b/c I’ve seen other of these topics. Like it’s nice that they want to try and keep the game clean but it seems that people are getting banned for even the most relative reasons. It’s like they want to create a community where flowers blossom, everyone is nice, the sun shines and the people are only supposed to worship GW2 – on the outside it seems fine but once you look real deep into it you feel that something’s wrong. Even now I feel like I’m gonna get banned from the game just by saying that.

A lot of people are getting bans like this. Sadly they are working their butts of to try and resolve this and it will take some time i am sure they will get to everyone as soon as they can. I got a three day ban myself because i was stupid enough to leave myself logged in while i went to work and my roomie went around with my dude acting like a jerk so yeah wohoo… Send a e-mail to them.

I got banned for 3 days for replying to someone who mentioned a “fleshlight” by saying “I used to own a fleshlight, but it filled up.”
I understand banning if this is unacceptable. My only issue is that never before in a videogame have I ever been banned for joking around.
I really wish I would have just got a warning. I wouldn’t have said anything again. 3 day’s with no warning seems pretty harsh considering i never call people names or anything racially offensive.

I just checked with the team about this, because a 2-week suspension for offensive behavior or language is highly unusual. I mean really unusual. What the team tells me is that it’s likely that those who have a two-week time-out got caught up in more than one incident and they amassed a second mark on their account, as listed in the RoC but more clearly outlined in the Conduct Breaches and Outcomes document.
And don’t worry, if 10 people report you for the same issue, you will only receive one suspension period. Which means that those who have an escalated suspension were involved in multiple incidents, not multiple reports of the same incident.

I very much so agree with you. If I had been warned instead of being banned immediately, I would have refrained from swearing. The only reason why I swore in GW2, is because it’s never been a problem in any video game I’ve played, and I didn’t think this one was different.
However, knowing now how strict everyone is about chat now, I’m not sure I want to play a game where I’m stressed out about if I’ll be reported for something I see as a joke, but someone else sees as offensive. Or if I lightly swear around guild mates or something. If that’s how they want to run their game, that’s fine. It’s just odd and I like this game, so I’d hate to have to see it off for such a trivial problem.

The thing is my quote up there is literal. I didn’t swear in the sentence. I don’t think i’ve sworn in GW2 chat at all ever.
I’m being quite literal. I said " I used to own a fleshlight but it filled up" I understand that it’s tasteless and rude and I have no problem never saying anything like that again in chat if that’s what Arenanet deems fit.
My only problem is that I really don’t feel that is 3 day ban worthy considering I’ve never used racial slurs or called someone and idiot or stupid in chat. All I did was joke around with some low brow humor.

Oh I know. I was referring to me as the one who swore, I also got a ban for 3 days for saying stuff like “Holy **** this guy hits hard” or “That ****** killed me” (In reference to NPC’s). I think it’s even more ridiculous that you were banned, because I mean I guess in my case I at least directly violated the ToS. But someone would just have to claim what you said is inappropriate and offensive? And I personally think it’s ridiculous that this stuff is suspension worthy. Warning, I wouldn’t be as surprised by, but it would still strike me as odd. But hey, if that’s how they want to run their game.

Got banned myself for racial slurs, 3 days. I was messing around not actually using “ni**a” in a derogatory manner, just jokes. I completely understand the wrong in using racial slurs and understand why it would be offensive to some. Regardless I’d rather be warned or hour bans rather than 3 days for a joke that was obviously taken the wrong way….

I believe you misunderstood. The first mark is 3 days. The second mark can be 14 days. If you have the first mark and get another in a relatively short period of time, the system automatically increases the suspension to 14 days.

The thing about racial jokes is the context of the joke. Just because you said it’s a joke doesn’t make it okay – we all know that it’s a sensitive matter so making a joke out of it should be taken a lot of consideration or don’t simply do it at all.

How about a warning on your first mark via email or in game GM with a automated reply. “You have recieved a mark against your account. Take this as a warning on your language in game”
3 day ban on second mark and so forth.
I’ve never even gotten close to using racial slurs or name calling in a mmo. Referencing a fleshlight should not be a bannable offense on the first mark.

I don’t think we want to know what we said to get banned (Or atleast I don’t need to). I can understand how my racial slurs were taken offensively but I think we’d all rather have a warning rather than a ban right off the bat without getting a slap on the wrist first. It’s easier on yourselves and the player to get a slap on the wrist first, for the first offense, then a ban if or when they continue to misbehave. Obviously with this “automated” system of 3-14 day bans you’re just getting people upset and inconveniencing players for a first offense. I get the fact Arena net wants a nice community, but banning for first offenses is not the way to do it. Yes it does smack the player hard and tell them you mean business but it probably also makes players leave and gives a “harsh” name for the game.
TL;DR, Message us a warning before you ban us. Please.

Godmoney. Could you please have someone look at my chat history and see that I have not been abusive to anyone much less used the N word?
3 day’s for a fleshlight reference? I promise not to make crude jokes again, but 3 days for one sentence that had no direct terms of use abuse seems overkill and knee jerk.
My fleshlight joke didn’t even contain anything close to swearing or slurs. Warn me for bad humor but a ban?

The point is, with all the safeguards that Arena net has put into the game (blocking players from EVER having to hear from them again, blocking players names from showing, and a chat filter with several settings) The only thing I can come up with is that people just want to retaliate (something they can’t do IRL, you can’t walk up and punch someone in the face for cussing in front of your kid, even if you want too, cause YOU"RE the one who will go to jail). Just like some players troll and cuss people out because you are sitting at home behind your computer and nobody can really DO anything about… let alone know who you are. Some players do the same but in reverse. They are SO tired of people being jerks online, they report them. And viola! they feel instantly vindicated and there’s no way the other player could retaliate on them. If it was real life, and someone could get your address and key your car, set your cat on fire, or put fresh cow manure in your mailbox, they would be more hesitant to do it.
Long story short, psychology shows that punishing people after the fact(hours to days after an incident), and trying to REGULATE peoples behavior generally doesn’t work (see reference: the drug war) How many of you got grounded for a HS report card for 2-6 weeks and came back with all A’s shining on your next report card? Right…that’s what I thought.
I’m sorry that Banned accounts aren’t sent information as to what the nature of the ban was, (ie chat logs) perhaps when A-net isn’t a total madhouse (which I’m sure it is now) that will be the case. I too am becoming one of those players afraid to chat and joke around in game because what I find funny, some would find offensive. And that is ruining my enjoyment of the game. In all my years of playing WOW I was banned ONE time. I was talking in chat and some guy…out of the BLUE says “Hyenawalker… that’s a strippers name! LOL” (my tauren hunter only used a hyena as a pet and they have that whole American Indian thing going on) and to defend my female honor, I torted back “It is NOT! Hyenaf**ker….that’s a strippers name!” and apparently someone took offense to that. It was a little funny because I got a 24 hour ban for the first offense, and by the time I logged in again, it was over. But it still stuck with me. I was sent an email with a chat log, and was like wow, I can’t believe someone reported that at 2AM.
My bottom line is this. With the way the game is set up, I should be able to take MULTIPLE steps to stop someone from offending me, harassing me, irritating me or making me look stupid in chat, BEFORE ever getting a GM involved. It’s a waste of A-nets resources to just ban someone cause you were bored and reading chat while crafting and someone said something you didn’t like. Block that player on YOUR end, cause the rest of us may find him hysterical. Remember being offended is TOTALLY subjective. I may have been brutallykittenby a flock of penguins at the zoo as a small child and any mention of black and white together, birds in general or penguins specifically, or ice or zoo’s may give me flashbacks. Should I report a player for making me uncomfortable in that instance?

You took what he said way to literally. What if I’m joking around with my friends in guild chat and mention something about dildo’s and someone finds it offensive and reports me. It sucks to have to be paranoid about stuff like that when we play games to relax, not get taut and stressed. I don’t have to worry about this when I’m hanging out with my friends, nor when I’m playing any other game in the world. I don’t want to play this game if it’s going to be like this, but I really do like this game. So I lose either way. I was never mean to a single person, but if they interpret it that way and report me, I’m going to get banned apparently.
We live in a world where we focus on persecuting the people who bother other people with their words. But what the most profound people have learned, is that anyone can be offended by anything. So instead of working on persecuting people, we need to work on toughening our skin so that if someone says something mean, it doesn’t affect us. Idealistically, one wouldn’t even care if someone walked up to them and cussed them out then walked away. I feel like that’s what we should work towards.

I’ve played many a game where people behave like you’re pining for. I don’t want that kind of environment. It’s draining, it’s tiresome, it’s stupid. A better community as a result of strong response by ArenaNet’s policies makes this significantly more enjoyable as I don’t have to read hostile spam in /map or in cities.

1.Why there is no warning system? 3 warns=ban
2.Why banning system is so crappy? 3 bans=you are on instant ban list and you are instantly banned after 1 warn.
3.Why banned player cant even see for what he was banned?

Right. We have a lot of people who need help, but we should dedicate people to hand-holding with giving warnings? Really? The warning comes through the User Agreement, the Rules of Conduct, and the Conduct Breaches and Outcomes. Become familiar with them and the problem is solved.

I do see what you’re saying and completely understand it. There’s many less trolls, people are generally nicer and more helpful. I really appreciate that in the GW2 community, and I know it’s a result of how they handle the people who are rude. However, it also makes for a much more cut and dry “Hi, how was your day?” “Good, how was yours?” Kind of feel to everything. I don’t feel like I can sit back and relax with anyone. If I relaxed and treated these people like my friends, I would swear occasionally. I would joke around. But that’s not allowed. So I think this system is kind of a double-edged sword. I understand what they want and are going for, but I don’t think this is the right way to do it. If they continue to do it this way, then I guess I’ll just have to find a different game

As soon as I log on tomorrow till I dont play anymore, Im going to be paranoid about getting banned for anything I say, nobody should have to feel like that.
The problem with what Gaile said is that anyone can find anything offensive, even if you don’t find any possible way that something could be offensive, and that’s not in the ToS because it’s not like you’re directly attacking someone like it says they’re against

Right. We have a lot of people who need help, but we should dedicate people to hand-holding with giving warnings? Really? The warning comes through the User Agreement, the Rules of Conduct, and the Conduct Breaches and Outcomes. Become familiar with them and the problem is solved.
In a perfect world, yes, it would be nice if people interpreted the warning through your codes of conduct and never broke them. But in a realistic world, no one reads the entire terms of service document. Have you read through every single change a gaming company has made to their terms of service every time they change it? And if you have, know that most people don’t. So for many people, it came as a surprise that saying fleshlight, using crude humor, or swearing was worth a 3 day ban. Sure, there are things we should know better than to do, but some of this stuff is warning worthy. It saves a lot of hassle on your end, and my end, and keeps us both happier and with less issues. So I don’t really see the down side?

Please.

I guess it depends how some players may not be aware “how far they can go”, and User Agreement won’t explain that, it’s just general about that. That’s because if a user do or say something that he may belive isn’t serious and get banned, it’s something it will be mad about.
Block this way accounts and for soo many time, won’t bring bad reputation to the game?
It’s for the best for sure, but thousands of bans already make me doubt that.

Wow they are censoring the heck out of this thread people. I’m not sure I want to do business with a company that censors everything. This almost feels like SWTOR’s forums the way they are censoring things.

Who is moderator.3405 and what did I write in this thread that warranted this message?
Please refrain from making posts that do not provide any meaningful contribution to the topic at hand.
Last time I checked agreeing with what someone posted in a thread is contributing to it, because it shows that you support what they are saying.

So a automated warning takes more time and effort than a automated ban? Come again?
A automated warning on your first offense would take more time than offending a bunch of players who have literally played dozens of dozens of mmo’s with no previous problems?
Giving me a warning for saying “fleshlight” is handholding compared to a automated warning?
How exactly is it harder to send a canned email than banning someone? Is that like how it’s harder to push my microwaves button as opposed to my stoves? They’re both buttons last i checked.

Just as long as you don’t start claiming First Amendment violations. I don’t see censorship here, just trying to keep things running smoothly. This is a support forum after all.

I just say this: This is timed bomb that will bring BAD REPUTATION to Guild Wars 2, players get mad and with reason, even if they did something bad, ban without any warning it’s quinda too rude from ArenaNet, first offenses should never be banned 3 days.
This way:
- Support will be always flooded will tickets about bans without know why were they banned in first place.
- People will get mad because the first time they did something wrong they were blocked from the game for days.

I didn’t in this thread. There is a difference between having things run smoothly versus disagreeing with what a poster says and then deleting it. I believe the latter happen.

Not sure I agree with the Staff on this one:
“Right. We have a lot of people who need help, but we should dedicate people to hand-holding with giving warnings? Really? The warning comes through the User Agreement, the Rules of Conduct, and the Conduct Breaches and Outcomes. Become familiar with them and the problem is solved.”
So if the “Legal” documents are a warning, then take this as a warning: don’t bother giving this company your money. Very liberal and very ban happy.
Not to mention banning players for using in-game vendors. This company needs to learn what an actual exploit is. It’s definitely not using the official UI to buy and sell items. Players don’t control the cost. Don’t blame them when they craft an item then sell it to a vendor. Don’t follow current leadership and blame others for your incompetence.
If the GW2 staff keeps this up, this will be the shortest lived game on the market. I think their marketing strategy is to sell people a $60 game, ban everyone and profit.

I wholeheartedly support this strong stance by ArenaNet. Thank you for caring about the vast majority of us who do not care to see this type of behavior in-game.
