But those who participated in the event get two (at least).

No, not everyone who participated was mailed a chest. It wasn’t that simple. The chests were mailed — with some admitted errors — to those who participated and who we believe had not received a chest.

Yep, errors were made. But nope, not everyone who was there got a second chest.

Sorry, that wasn’t what I meant. I hoped the rest of my post would clarify that, but that was my error.

I mean, if you send everyone a chest, then everyone who already completed the event will then have two chests (apart from the unlucky ones who got DCed, who will at least have one). This makes everyone, including those in the unwanted timezones happy, and allows the people who did the event to still have an advantage.

If not everyone (which I still think is fairest), couldn’t there at least be a compromise with everyone who participated in some part of the weekend? Still allowing people who looted the chest once to get a second one, and thus maintain a reward for their work, whilst acknowledging that many players wanted to do the same work but were unable to through no fault of their own.

I’m not sure why the suggestion that has already been brought up, which says to patch things up by simply giving a chest to everyone who has not received one in the mail yet, is getting shut down. From an unbiased viewpoint, I see that as the only fair solution.

I appreciate that you’re trying to help, and thanks for the ideas. I can tell you why it won’t work, and you can see that in this very thread:

  • But they got one and I attended. Give me two.
  • But you accidentally gave my friend a chest and he already looted, where I was disconnected and couldn’t loot. Give me another.

The arguments you bring up are a bigger issue now than they would be after the fix I suggested. It appears you did not read my entire original post, and I can’t blame you because you are getting bombarded with posts right now. However, please read it to see my full argument for this solution.

At the current state, you have a problem that you cannot leave alone because there are still people who deserved chests and did not receive them. This will always be the case unless you do what I suggested. If you send chests to everyone, you will be able to flag the problem as fixed. At most 5% of the people who are complaining right now will still complain, but you will be able to move on and focus on future content.

Hey guys,

Here’s an update: We have verified the source of the issue — or at least the source in the vast majority of cases — and the good news is that we will be making a distribution (most likely later this evening ) that should address this issue for a lot of people, if not all.

I think that people who get the mail will post here, so you guys will know when it has happened, but if I am able to do so I will post later as well.

After this distribution, if you still have an issue and have not received the chest that you earned, you may submit a support ticket. I’d like to ask that you not submit tickets asking for a second chest because someone else got one. If you got the chest that you earned, that’s good and we’re sorry for the confusion, the delays in distribution, and for the errors. We’re sincerely sorry, and our team members are doing their level best to make this right for as many players as possible!

Thank for keeping us so updated on the issue

I know it’s not easy to make everyone happy on this issue, but I hope it gets somewhat rectified and we can move on from this.

I agree they’re making everything too complicated. I know I’m personally not asking for everyone to get exactly the same number of chests, that would be nice, but I can understand that from a technical perspective it may be a nightmare. Sure if my buddy got 2 and I got 1, that stinks but 1 is better than 0 and would go a very long way to quell the outcry of not only today, but all of the negative communication that has occurred since their failed event ended.

But I don’t understand the logic. You don’t want people who have received chests already to get another chest, because it would be unfair. Okay, that is sound. But it already happened. I’ve talked to several people, and they’ve gotten more than just 2 chests. Because it was not considered an exploit, many people ran the event again on overflows on different characters, obtaining multiple chests even before distribution. And some of these people got another chest from the mailing. This is a pretty big disparity already. And how can you be sure that the same mistake won’t happen again? +1 chest value to the people who already had +3 or +4? What in particular did they do to deserve that over the people who couldn’t even log in for hours on end?

Just want to know, what is the team going to do with those “lucky” ones who receive a chest incorrectly (either already gotten the chest from the event itself, or those who did not attend and gotten the mail)? Are the other players just going to let it go again? This is beginning to look like the whole karma fiasco again, where those who exploited the game got away with it and the others was suppose to move on….

Not saying that those who incorrectly receive the chest from the mail should be punish, (since it’s not their fault at all for receiving the mail), but compensation should be given to the others who didn’t receive 1 at all.

BTW, I don’t think anyone will come forward and admit that they incorrectly receive a chest. Its like admitting to a crime. People are afraid that their acc will be investigated and their chest remove.

I read it again and I understand what you meant now. However, yes I do still have doubts. A 20% drop rate for precursors would be insane, I’m pretty sure it would just break the game. Even the unique skins at Halloween had a much much lower drop rate than that an they weren’t worth nearly as much. I suppose I don’t have any logical evidence to dispute this other than the fact that it just makes no sense for it to be that high.

What they did with Karma fiasco is they banned everyone and then released that under condition they delete items and/or profit they made otherwise ban again.
Obviously this is not the same case cause it’s their mistake and that’s the point they should fix it. People that did that and deleted fixed their mistake, now so should ArenaNet (But that’s just my opinion and should be treated as such)

After all that has happened, you say that there is no longer a way to be fair to all players, but I can think of one thing that would make all players happy: a (very) public acknowledgement that this has been a long chain of mistakes, and a promise that it will not happen again. As in, no more one-time loot opportunities where being disconnected can permanently deprive people of the reward, and no more attempted fixes that accidentally make the reward disparity worse.

Gaile, I just want to say a big THANK YOU to you and everyone working hard on resolving the issue. This community is very hard to handle when everyone starts getting upset but you’re keeping your head up and your attitude down— not something many people can do. It’s impossible to make everyone happy given the many errors with not only the event but also the distribution script.

I’m not sure how the script was programmed, but I imagine the simplest means would have been to go with a T/F method. Single out the day, isolate the players logged in during the event, and go through a list:
“Logged in 00:00 ~ 00:00: T
Lost Shores map: T
Pre-final Karka events: T
Final Karka event: T
Looted chest: F”
Anyone that would have met that criteria should have been entitled to a chest yesterday. That doesn’t help those that were disconnected prior to the final battle but spent hours running the events anyway. Those logged out during the chain should have been added to a list for further investigation.

Additionally, the chests shouldn’t have been mailed out immediately upon being deemed qualified. Instead, their names should have been compiled and the boxes sent out in large batches. It seems like the same method would be a fix to the current issue as well. Add one more criteria to the list:
“Mailed reward: F”
and those meeting ALL criteria would be sent their due items.

I’m no programmer, but I do know scripts such as this are possible. I’m not saying it would necessarily be perfect but it looks like however the script had been previously written had a major error somewhere.

I hope this works out for everyone at Anet and the community. Keep doing what you’re doing, Gaile. This would be far worse without you talking with us.

I have followed this game since its announcement back in 07. I have travelled to Germany and London, to get hands on time with the game and meet the devs. Getting my art book signed by Daniel and speaking to Martin and CJ really was awesome. I have been a staunch supporter of Anet and this game, persuading friends to get it and pre-purchasing a 2 copies so that my son and I could play together with those friends.

We were sold on this game with the promises of additional content and support even though it was a pay once play forever deal. At no point was the caveat ‘if you live in the right part of the world’ added into any of this information.

Your own precedent set for a ‘one time special event’ was a cinematic followed by a repeatable dungeon, available for 24+ hours. When you chose to start the ‘finale’ at a time when my son had to get to bed, because of school the next day and when my friends that I play the game with were faced with an unplayable mess if they went near the zone, as in 2 minute freezes, DC etc, I chose to do other things with my friends. I believed (mistakenly in this case, but not unreasonably I feel) that we would get a chance to experience the content at a reasonable time the next day.

When I got up at 6am the next day I found an overflow where the event was running, with the help of some awesome forum members here. But before I could wake my son or finish the event myself, you pulled the plug on us with your update.

To clarify this means that, West Coast US got to play the event multiple times between Sunday 12 noon and 10.45 ish PM, East Coast would have been between 3PM and 1.45 AM Monday. UK it started at 8 PM and ended at 6.45 AM, so with a bit of luck ‘normal’ people over a certain age may have been able to get 1 run in. The times got even worse the further east you were, with the Australians having to be able to start around 3am on a Monday morning and having it ending approximately 1.45 on a school/work day. Surely you must see that, for anyone not based in the US, this is incredibly unfair. Even if I do get a chest for ‘participating’, I still haven’t got to experience content which I have supported with early adoption of 2 copies, plus gem purchases. You have chosen to exclude me from playing the game with my friends, based purely upon my timezone. This was not the deal presented on purchasing the game.

What should have happened with this event, to make it a ‘special one off’ is having the chest available only once per account, once the chest had been opened people should not have been able to rerun it. This could have run for 24 hours, spreading the load on servers and making content equally available to customers in all timezones.

Once you realised what a mess you had made of it, the only sensible solution was to open the event again for the other 13.25 hours of the clock. This immersion baloney could have been skirted with an asuran time portal device or whatever else you wanted to invent, disbelief has to be suspended regularly anyway. This throwing out free chests business doesn’t actually fix anything, even without the fact that it has turned into another royal mess. We want to see the content. Even though this is a buy to play game, we were told we would not get any less service than sub payers would expect. So yes we have paid for and are entitled to expect access to the content.

I want somebody to step up, apologise to people who have been excluded as well as all those let down by technical issues etc. Assure us that you have learnt from these mistakes because it isn’t apparent. Show us that you actually value our custom. Right now my plans to spend further money on gems, have been put on hold. I am not rich so £50 – £100 was a lot, but I thought it would be worth it. Now it seems I will be wasting it supporting development which will not benefit me in any way.

I am sure I am not alone in these feelings, in fact I am sure you have already lost many customers over this. You need to fix this the right way, soon and very loudly and clearly so that people can regain their lost faith in Anet. I have been a staunch supporter for 7+ years and have lost mine, so I dread to think how any newcomers must feel.

From my limited perspective, it very much seems that ArenaNet’s first priority was to ensure the “naughty” did not get rewarded (naughty meaning those who didn’t attempt to participate in their very flawed event). If true that is indeed unfortunate. Their priority should have been to ensure the deserving were rewarded and if that meant a few naughty got undeserved rewards then so be it.

From anecdotal evidence it would appear that their first priority was not entirely successful as there are quite a few people saying they didn’t even log in but they got a chest. And from there it really went sideways as it also seems very many who had already received a chest (or more than one) were sent yet another.

For the life of me, I can’t see how this ever gets straight because their priority was never where it should have been (and doesn’t appear to be there still).

When I first posted here, I pointed out I was jaded by the fact of the events being buggy and despite chucking a sickie at work to attend I was DC’d and couldn’t log in despite many many attempts to log back in to the event. I think most people would consider it fair to be a bit jaded by that…

However, having read every post by Gaile here, I am feeling a bit better about the whole situation. Don’t get me wrong, I would still love having the chest given I missed out on eight hours of work simply to rage at my monitor, but I can see it was an honest mistake that they are trying diligently to fix.

However, people need to realize that while many people getting multiple chests DOES affect the general populace, it does in a POSITIVE way. The only people who are affected negatively are those trying to sell precursors. The rest of us get a nice price reduction towards our legendary goals.

Ok, I lol’d. I really do understand why people are “hot under the collar” about the issue, and the team really is doing all it can to make this right. In the grand scheme of things, I guess some would say this is just a tiny thing. And with all due respect, I think you are exactly 180 from the truth of the matter. The event offered a reward. With issues that folks had, the team is trying to give the reward to everyone who participated, even — as you’ve seen — not fully or not to the end of the event. I’d say that the team is doing more to reach out to more players, not trying to put up some sort of silly barrier.

We can agree to disagree, but your thinking just isn’t at all accurate. That will be even more clear when you seen the sheer volume of people who get the reward with the distributions made.

The concept of “one time events” is controversial, and the development team is taking all your comments and input into consideration. Nothing is written in stone. What we do one time does not necessarily drive what we do the next time.

For example, you’ll find that the disclosures for Wintersday are much more informative and detailed than they were for Halloween. Why? Because you players told us that you wanted to know a bit more. Keep the interest, but don’t make it too hard to know what’s coming, in short. And the devs listened.

I don’t know how future events will go — that’s not my area of the game or the company. But I did want you to know that all your feedback — good, bad, and indifferent — is respected by the development team and many things that come along are a direct result of courteously expressed and well-thought player input.

Gaile, I think you do a great job here within the parameters you are allowed to operate but, in this instance, I do respectfully agree to disagree. I draw my conclusions based on official responses read here and of all the things that could have been said at this point and weren’t, one of the repeated themes is categorically who will NOT get a chest. To me, that is an unacceptable display of misplaced priorities.

More importantly where are we at with issuing the reward chest for those who missed out?

Is it still on track to occur tonight?

Not sure if it’s already been said. But there is one reason and one reason only that people are so riled up about this chest. It is the elephant in the room as it were.

ArenaNet chose to make these chests a vehicle to distribute a radical number of precursor items, making many people instant “millionaires” as these items are still selling at ungodly prices. This was done in a much less dramatic sense during the Halloween event too, (there at least the best loot drops were thematic).

Here’s an idea, how about we don’t include items worth hundreds of gold in RNG one-time event chests? It’s all well and good to have vanity items related to the event, or twenty slot bags, etc… But you are just asking for drama when you make the chest have a chance to drop the most expensive items in the game by far. Do event themed items, and make them soul/account bound.

If you want to allow “unlucky” players to obtain the items, or people who couldn’t log in, put them on the cash shop for a reasonable fee based on the amount of gold you’re targeting the value of the item at, or the desired scarcity of the item. One system a friend of mine suggested is that the “final reward” for one-time events should be restricted to items like bags, or a large quantity of whatever the event “tokens” were. For example, if the Event-Themed Greatsword skin cost 2000 event tokens, then have the end boss drop an item worth 2000 event tokens.

I don’t envy your team either way, it’s a difficult thing to try and please the incredibly diverse player base of an MMOG. But only an idiot couldn’t have seen this coming, the instant I found out the chest dropped precursor items I said to my friends on skype, “Wow there is going to be a ton of drama over this.” Even if no one is saying it, it’s all about the precursors. People generally fight tooth and nail for items that they perceive to be worth quite a bit.

I’m simply here to let y’all know that I am one of those disconnected and unable to sign back in, and I’ve yet to receive a chest.

Thanks for all the effort you’ve put into this problem.

And, quite frankly, having someone responding in the thread relieves much of the frustration. So an extra thank you to Gaile for having to comb through this mess.

Gaile Gray,

I’ll add this to my ticket as well, but wouldn’t it make sense to know who got a chest (a good 98% at least) by simply running a query and outputting which players have the 20 Slot Chest? They wouldn’t have it if they didn’t attend the event. If they got d/c’d. Or attended the event but didn’t care to take the time to finish it and thus missed the chest (their loss, and shouldn’t be rewarded, but that’s a different topic).

Querying for a single item that was in the chest for ALL who looted it after the boss, would give you a good 98% accurate statistics. If you could then expand on that to see who sold it to a merchant or deleted it, that would provide the remainder.

Then done. You know who looted. Then either send out a chest with exception to those, to each account, not character.

Seems simple on that front.

Personally I did Day 1, fully, Day 2, fully despite being broken at points, and Day 3, fully. I was disconnected two or three times during the big hours long fighting on Lost Shores, but managed to reconnect each time. And complete the big and completely well done boss fight to get to the chest at the end. Yeah the rewards were pretty poor, especially compared to what everyone is getting in their chests mailed to them, but we did the work and then partied on the corpse!~

Thanks

I have yet to recieve my chest ingame, and I’ve participated in the full duration of the event. From Day 1 ~ Day 3.

Would it be best advised that I contact support? Or is the distribution ongoing? I hope this works out for me soon, because a few of my friends have recieved extra chests out of the blue, yet there was nothing for me.

Had you logged in yesterday with no chest, or is this the first time you’re checking for it?

Just to satisfy my own curiosity

ETA: I still don’t have a chest, so I’m hoping they haven’t run the new and improved script yet!

We are currently running a script to distribute the chest to additional qualifying players. It will take a while — some hours, I think — so please allow time for it to complete and for those cute, furry little mail carriers to reach your individual mailboxes with your loot.

This means that one person may have gotten a chest an hour ago, but yours may not arrive for some hours to come. Such is the nature of scripts. So hold on and, as THHGTTG says, if you don’t have the chest yet, “DON’T PANIC!”

Hey Gail,

I have not received a chest yet. My account was terminated in error – I guess someone reported me as a bot and it took 4 – 5 days for me to get my account back. I did not get to play the event Friday, Saturday and it was late in the day Sunday when I checked my e-mail and realized I got my account back, by that time I was so disgusted with the way my game was taken from me and after reading of all the problems about the event I had no desire to even try to figure out how to jump in to the final phase. I missed the 3 day event do to someone’s error; I like to thank the GW1 GM Goliath who helped me reset my GW1 password and forwarded my ticket to NC soft Account Support. I was very happy that my ticked got resolved in less than a week, but the termination should have never happen. I love playing GW2 and have since spent real money buying gems and plan to continue to support Guild Wars. What should I do? Summit a ticket? Or just move on?

Thanks
Guild Wars player since December 2005

March 16, 2013 still have not my chest – got cheated out of the event and loss of play time for 6 days – this is BS
