Then I ask once again, why did it just start after the patch? before the patch great, after patch bad. My regular internet and other internet games are the same just GW2. My VoIP phone works fine even when GW2 is hogging all the bandwidth, but for some reason GW2 doesn’t work great anymore. I will leave it at that and see what people say, hopefully it is my side, I will plug a different computer in on my side and see how its working if I’m having the same issue then I will have at least isolated it to something beyond my computer. Either ISP or GW2. i will update once i have done so.

Coincidence. They change software so when the issue occurs people expect it was the change. Happens with just about anything these days.

If it was the patch, everyone would be affected. And I’ll attest I have no lag/log-in issues.

You need to trace the issue out in the network. Just cause your VOIP and Skype, other games, are working doesn’t mean ANYTHING. Each of those services paths to different stats/countries, and they will all hit different ISP’s along the way. You need to trace route from you to the end point to TRULY troubleshoot the issue.

With out traces there is nothing that can be done.

If this map is accurate (I dont trust its source yet), France is getting hit with a 20Gbps DoS Attack.

http://www.digitalattackmap.com/#anim=1&color=0&country=FR&time=16100&view=map

France only has a 20Gbps pipe for internet, and since 95% of it is being used in a DoS attack, that would be the source of connection issues for anything going through their nodes (Frankfurt, FRA61….ect).

If France Deployed IPS’s like they should have back in 2008, the DoS could be shut down and avoided. It appears this is not the case.

Anyone having connection issues in Europe needs to contact their ISP and get their ISP to go after the Nodes in France.

I agree with this. The first place to start is pulling trace route data to see where the issue is.

We had quite a number of latency (lag) reports this morning from European players. They started about 8:00 AM Pacific Time and ended about 9:20 AM Pacific. From our viewpoint it appears the issue was resolved.

Are you still having issues? Have you run a trace route? What does it show?

Thanks.

I’m having issues too as I lag out a few times a day, other than that the game is very playable.. but you can imagine how bad it smells when you have to queue for a hour to play with your guild. It has made me quit from several of our raids.

I put in a ticket and the support team told me I should be fine, although I’m slightly suffering from packetloss. They told me to try a proxy and see how it goes. Obviously there is a problem between me & GW2 somewhere. Not suffering the same problem in other games, also got the fastest ISP you can get in Belgium. :P

What I noticed is I never lag out with few people on the screen but as soon as like 20+ load in out of nowhere.. thats a recipe for disaster, definitely during the evening.

Please be aware that this method of debugging network issues has major flaws.
The flaws of measuring ICMP Packets (pings) to measure lag – are well known and numerous these are:
1 ISPs (intermediary) – will randomly drop ICMP Packets on a network. This will then report incorrectly in ping plotter or tracerts commands as dropped packets.
We will see randomly high levels of pings or other such items which does not actually reflect the state of the traffic itself.
Level 3 networks are well known for dropping high numbers of ICMP packets especially cross-country this helps prevent DDOS attacks and is often turned on.
2 The actual game traffic does not travel via ICMP ports so we are looking at something else than the actual traffic itself that is being sent.
3 ICMP Packet analysis only works on a network you fully own to give reliable results and is likely to only work for the first few hops of any network traffic. If you are not seeing any packet loss on the first 2-3 hops then it is probably something else that could be causing the issues.
I even have information supporting this from my ISP which I have sent in prior support tickets to ANET and why this method is completely unreliable. We tried to see if level 3 has a problem between Dallas and Washington as a hop- it turned out that Level 3 routinely drop ICMP packets and the other traffic (game traffic is unaffected).
If possible could we migrate to analysing actual traffic (to/from and if the traffic does not reach it’s destination) with a free network traffic capture system: http://www.wireshark.org. TCP traffic which this game uses relys on synchronised Qued in-order communications if one item fails (or the packet is rejected by the destination) we often experience in-game lag.
Why do I suggest this?
This gives every piece of traffic a start time, end time, ISP priority (QoS), duration in transmission (delta time – can be used to measure real lag), acknowledgement of receipt and a much more detailed analysis.
I have numerous pingplotter graphs which look okay (in various areas of the game), but a more detailed analysis of the actual network traffic highlights some major issues are being experienced in the back end (usually packet is rejected from being recieved by server at high load or a desync event has happened).
I know this is more complex than a basic level 1 network diagnosis – but without looking beyond ICMP it is unlikely we will get to the bottom of these lag issues.
Happy to disucss this further.

You’re right. I’ve installed Wireshark now to end with this problem for good. I’m not having problems now, but at least i’d like to know the reasons this happens from time to time.

Do you have some kind of script or filter to use with wireshark so the next time i have a lag problem i can send my GW2 data only? I’m really willing to finish with this

I have been experiencing serious lag issues for 3 straight days now. usually there is a second delay between pressing a button and something happening, also rubberbanding a lot, very frustrating, PVP is impossible, sometimes I experience 3-5 second spikes of lag where nothing happens, also affects party chat and browsing pvp servers. Everything outside of Guild Wars 2 works perfectly, browsing internet, streaming video, world of tanks etc. speed tests come back perfect, ping test to guildwars2.com at 58 ms. I live in Massachusetts and use Verizon FiOS and play on Blackgate server. Any help would be appreciated.

*update. My latency with Gw2.exe is about 300 in resource monitor. The other computer on my lan is not having the lag problem. I tried deleting Local.dat but it didn’t make any difference. The lag suddenly started while playing Sanctum Sprint.

This pretty well sums up with what’s been going on with me. My fiance plays with me on the same network and has similar issues, but nowhere near as extreme as mine is.

I just tested some other games and had no issues whatsoever, including FPS.

My guildie makes a joke that he was lagging before, and as soon as he stopped (a couple of days ago) I started getting it, like he passed me the virus.

If there’s any help or more information needed I’d be happy to oblige, as this completely lowers my desire to play.

RIP in peace Robert

I seem to hit large walls of packet loss in dallas few hops before the server. Trouble with one of the last stops we all use would explain why so many people have started having issues.

Call me crazy but since most of us are seeing issues with the packet loss drop on the Dallas node before the anet servers that the type of load balancing they have set up is rejecting/dropping packets. And the reason not everyone is seeing this is because it obviously doesn’t drop everyone’s packets just if you happen to be the lucky contestant for the hour/day/week.

It just seems a little crazy that this game is soooo sensitive to network issues and it is effecting so many people for everyone to be having ISP issues for this long. This has been going on for months not just weeks something more really should be done on anets side. Get a network expert on this or something and give a detailed post of what they did to prove it’s not on your end other than having all of us use ping plotter which is a flawed system to prove something. In this day and age we all use internet for so many things and have no issues yet when it comes to this game it’s like my connection is walking on a tightrope.

This seems very common and would explain what’s happening to me. I’ll definitely check this tonight.

However, I’m only a pseudo-technical person as I haven’t had any formal education on computer science or the likes.

If my issue is due to packet loss in Dallas, is there anything that I (the player) can do, or is the fix solely on Anet’s side?

Purchased the game a little over a month ago after finally getting a computer that can run games made within the past 5 years, was so excited to finally play GW2… first few days/weeks I had no problems, now it’s become virtually unplayable by the extreme long lags then error 7 disconnects. All I’ve been told by ANet’s CS team so far is to try out a proxy service that have free trials (But of course are paid subs afterwards). I’ve pasted my tracert info to see if I can get any advice from any of you. (Going to reply again with the info from the ANet diag tool since it’s too much length for one message, just in case)

From the looks of the tracert it seems to timeout after the exact same ip address each time, which seems very close to the ip address i was connected to on the server.

Right, I’m getting network lag now. Fine last night. Seems to be a couple of things happening. Paris (France) is slowing things down, so is Dallas (US). And, as Marley points out, there are timeouts right after IP 64.25.32.82. Here’s my tracert:

Also from the UK, horrendous lag each time I’ve tried for last few hours. Also, points to level3 which is hop 6 onwards and where the packetloss starts.

It will now time out for 30 hops. I have run it a dozen times. Its always dying at step 11. I called my ISP and they changed my IP address just in case, that actually just added a new hop inside my network. Internal latency actually was BETTER before they did that for me.

Problem is not me, is not my ISP. What can I do?

Justthat: Call your ISP man, your issue starts inside your ISP network, right on hop 2. Your leaving your network on hop #6. From Hop 1-6 you should have low latency.

I have yet to run a tracert (didn’t know how. Will do so tonight), but I’ve been experiencing the same issues as others here. I’ve been having this problem on and off since last Friday, and it seems to be linked to the number of players in your immediate vicinity. For example, this morning I zoned into Lornar’s Pass to wait for the Marionette. During this time, I ran around near the lake getting kills for Bloodlust. No lag whatsoever.

Then, I head to the lanes to prepare, and as soon as I reach the area where other players start to be displayed, the lag starts (and I should point out that it’s not a FPS drop. Players are rubberbanding all over the place, there’s 5s+ skill lag, etc.) It gets progressively worse as more and more people zone in, until you get to the stage where you’re just praying you don’t get disconnected.

Then, once the event is over and people start to leave, the problem once again alleviates until it’s gone.

This same issue happens in any map with a large amount of players, including LA, EotM etc. It’s like the servers are getting choked with too much data transfer or something.

I’m ignoring the results on the last hop as I think the server firewall is configured to drop ICMP packets and never reply.

I’m having the exact same issues as posted here, all of which have popped up since the latest patch. It’s gotten to the point where the game has become unplayable at times.

I’ve been playing GW2 since release and haven’t seen it lagging this bad before. Really hope a solution is found soon otherwise I’ll have to find an alternative game to spend time on :/

I have terrible problems with the game. If I manage to load my character on any map, dungeon etc.. I get a sudden lag spike, and I mean a massive lag spike, then I am being disconnected. When I try to return to the game my character gets stuck in the loading screen. This is happening for some characters, but does not for other. It is randomized. I cannot enjoy any aspect of the game. I am terribly frustrated. Anet remains silent. No one replies to my support tickets. The same thing happens on 3 computers, regardless of the ISP used. Powerfull computers I must add. No solution I found online work but one -battleping. I REFUSE TO PLAY FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT THO, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO ENJOY THE GAME WITHOUT THIS NONSENSE. Does Anet want me to pay $5.95 to play the game? That is how I see it. Fix it Anet, and fix it fast…

For the Glory!

I’m not sure if this is what others are talking about or if this is something different but since the patch, on occasion during heavy effect fights (and sometimes even light effects) my FPS will drop from 50-60 to like 10 or lower. It’ll chop up terribly and I can barely see whats going on.

This only started happening POST patch.

I needed a new video card anyway from my older one and thought maybe the patch made it more GPU intensive so I bought a NVIDIA 760. Sure, the game is more beautiful now but the EXACT same thing happens with this card that my other one had.

It’ll stay at like 10 or less FPS for 10-15 seconds and (if I’m alive) it jumps back up to 50 or so FPS and runs beautifully, even if its STILL super heavy AOE/Spell effects everywhere.

… help please? Because this is unbearable.

Hard to say with only that information.

What kinda of lag is this? Skill delay or fps? if the latter, do you just stay at low fps all the time or get it in spikes? if so, are they random or very frequent and even same intervals every time? What are your system specs?

Ok, do these following things:
1. Download Real Temp or Core Temp (which one looks nicer) and GPU-Z.
2. Check your CPU’s temperature with whichever you chose and with GPU-Z your GPU’s.
3. Check your GPU’s link width from GPU-Z (it’s the part which says Bus Interface: PCI-E 2.0 x16 @ _(whatever you have here) or something similar).
4. Download the latest drivers from GeForce Experience (download that from GeForce site if you haven’t)
5. Repair the game client or reinstall the whole game. Repair doesn’t always fix the problem but it’s a lot faster so might do that first.

Your specs look otherwise sufficient to run GW2, but the can be a problem somewhere in the configuration or software level. Does any other game behave weirdly?
