can we get a kitten answer...
Download the rest the next day, or get a ISP with a higher data cap.
I don’t think you understand my situation. Im limited to 10 gigs a month through at&t. I also live in the hill country and have absolutely no other internet options. Some of us aren’t as well off as you.
It sounds like the game files cannot be updated with the new patch due to the files being ‘Read Only’ or the game not being run as an administrator.
Try to:
- Ensure your game is set to Run As Administrator in the shortcut’s Properties > Compatibility tab.
- Ensure the ‘Read Only’ attribute is not set in the right-click > Properties for Gw2.exe, Gw2.tmp and Gw2.dat files in the installation directory.
Then: Check the game for errors and repair it
- Close your game completely.
- Next, make a copy of your Gw2 game shortcut and rename it “GW2 Repair” or to something that you will recognize it for being only for running a repair on your GW2 installation.
- Now, right-click this “Gw2 Repair” shortcut and click on “Properties”.
- On the “Shortcut” tab look in the “Target:” field, you should see:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2” or wherever you have Guild Wars 2 installed. - After the closing quotation marks in this line put a space and then add -repair
It will look like this but with your GW2 install location:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2” -repair - Hit OK after making this change.
- Run this repair shortcut. Your game will run through a repair cycle and fix any damaged files it finds.
- After it runs through, start the game using the normal GW2 game shortcut (not the repair shortcut) and see if your game can update properly without needing to re-download the whole game.
As always, it is best to copy your Guild Wars 2 installation to another location on your drive as a backup for just this type of situation so you won’t need to re-download the whole game again to perform a re-install or to fix a damaged install.

I’m gonna bookmark this thread in case I need to do this. I saved the info though if I can’t access the net at some point.

There is also information HERE on how to remove the local.dat file which can also be the solution to some issues.
And if you ever have issues with the Trading Post, THIS outlines how to clear the GW2 cache files to fix most TP issues. Though it may be quicker to simply do “Windows Key” + “F” to open Search on your computer and search for “gw2cache” and then delete that “gw2cache-{bunch-of-letters-and-numbers}” folder.
There are generally these few fixes that solve most issues with the game:
- Run As Administrator/Disable UAC/remove ‘Read Only’ attributes of game files
- Run -repair
- Clear GW2 Cache files
- Delete local.dat file

thx stinvec, but it doesn’t seem to fix my issue. the gw2.dat is still sitting duck in the folder while .exe is loading a new one. weird thing though, even if a new .dat is being downloaded the old one is neither gaining or losing size at all….

First, do you happen to have some files in your installation directory called Gw2.000, Gw2.001, Gw2.002, .003, .004 etc.?
This means that your Gw2.tmp file has the ‘Read Only’ attribute set on it. Remove this attribute from its Properties (as well as Gw2.exe and Gw2.dat if they have it set).
- If you don’t have those extra Gw2.001+ files
- Those 3 Gw2 files also do not have the ‘Read Only’ attribute set
- You’ve already set your game shortcut to ‘Run As Administrator’
…and your game still tries to re-download the whole game again, then perhaps try this:
I’ve read of a way around this issue if that is the case.
- Make sure the game/launcher is closed completely.
- Move your Gw2.dat file to another location.
(so it is no longer in the installation directory but is saved elsewhere). - Load up your game normally then.
The launcher should download a new Gw2.exe and then switch to start downloading the whole game again and create a new Gw2.dat in the installation folder. - Close the launcher after it has started to try to download game files to a new Gw2.dat file (the actual ‘login’ stage of the launcher with the progress bar).
- Now move your stored/old Gw2.dat file back into your installation directory and overwrite the newly created Gw2.dat file (then ensure it is still not marked as ‘Read Only’).
- Start the game again and see if it updates to the newest patch properly.

GW2 is unusable in general if you can’t access the net….

I tried it before but it didn’t work. Anyway, thx so much StinVec, you’ve been very helpful. I’m re-downloading the game and it’s almost done.

You forget the fact that I could still repair guild wars 2. And I’m talking about if suddenly I can’t access the internet and want to get it just done. Hence why I saved the information. :B
