@DoomBunny great post yeah I agree having also played a hunter in WoW. Hunter pets initially was in the same situation with aoe damage and was fixed later.
I am glad you mentioned the fact they actually can’t dodge / roll good point.
Yeah I haven’t done too much PvP to see what type of survivability/balance pets have, but I agree with all these posts and it seems fairly straightforward. But again, we haven’t heard anything in these forums in a good while from Anet so still not sure what is going on.
To the OP – I bet you would be pretty upset if you couldn’t hit moving targets….so why are you content that your pet can’t?
Minus the fact that pets can’t hit moving targets; an easy way to fix the current situation in dungeon/pve is to make them 80% immune to AoE damage. But this solution would make PvP pets a bit OP and a simple solution to that is to lower their health to compensate. That would make them a bit more squishy in PVP with direct damage but more able to stand up to aoe.
I know others have mentioned this and I just find it hard to believe that we have to reinvent how pets work when compared to other games of this genre.
Honestly this seems a pretty easy solution in code “if(damage == aoe)”.
So recently when going to CoE during the laser jump I obviously die from a laser but when I go to waypoint I come back downed and dying. I think it has to do with the pet but I am not entirely sure. Anyone else seeing this?
I have a feeling some of the rangers complaining in these threads about pets and dungeons don’t respec for dungeons. There is a passive/follow function where you can still use pet buffs & f2 skills. Also there’s the quickening zephyr buff for pet swapping + pet swapping CD reduction. Maybe I’m the only one who’s thinking outside of the box here but QZ+pet swap spamming+sigil of rage seems like a pretty consistent quickness buff. Sure spirits suck compared to banners but I don’t really feel like the pet argument is valid.
Actually I think quite a lot are specced for dungeons or you just couldn’t survive. And agree the QZ+pet swap is nice but unfortunately if your pet is dead it is irrelevant.
I’ll put it up front: I’m only commenting in this thread because I feel like my concerns will be read/heard/appreciated by the ANet development team through John Smith. Thank you for your activity in this thread and your promotion of intellectual discussion.
“Better” is such an arbitrary term. I think in the grand scheme of things, a free market approach to gems would probably drive prices far higher and far faster than they currently are rising. I also think that countless hundreds of people would invest in thousands upon thousands of gems and hoard them to sell back later at an immense profit. And while the free market we have in GW2, the BLTH, is a buyer’s market, I think the buyer of gems would be hurting a lot more than they are now.
That said, I endorse it. The transparency and player-control over the market makes it feel more fair. I also think prices would normalize more predictably in both time and magnitude, resulting in less of this “slow incline” that frustrates players as it stands. I also think a free market would net ANet more money, because as gem prices climb, people will get more bang for their buck when they spend $10 for 800 gems.
Let me elaborate on that last point for a second. I make a lot of money annually, and I really enjoy GW2. I would really like to support ANet for their hard work and to keep content coming. However, I do not feel right now (or anytime in the near future) that my cash is getting me the monetary reward in-game that it should. RMTs may be poisoning the well in this sense, but I’ll be frank with you—if I could buy T3 cultural armor for $50, I would. I might consider buying multiple sets, but probably not right away. I think that’s a fair exchange rate for the equivalent price of an expansion (in my totally arbitrary opinion based on my salary and how much money I’m willing to spend on a game). As it stands, right now, it would cost me $321.30 to buy a set of T3 cultural armor at current gem prices converted back into gold. That is incredulous, and essentially means that I will never support ANet until such time that I feel the conversion is worth it. That’s really unfortunate because I love the company, but am just not comfortable throwing money away. I think that a free market would help address that concern.
Completely agree here the exchange rate is just extreme. People are willing to pay for gold but take the apple store for example, the money made is not the large transactions but the smaller $1.99 – $3.99 sales.
*Imagine a Ranger as 80% damge to 20% pet damage split.
-Pets are useless in PvP (example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk5DiFJAtWQ&feature=plcp).
-In Dungeons (80 exp.) or WvW pets are doen 80~90% of the time due to the lack of a dodging mechanism
—-
*Rangers have very unreliable condition-remove.*Rangers have bad utility spells compared to other classes
—-
*Greatsword can’t compete with Warriors*Short-Sword attacks disable dodgeing
*Shortbow is inferior to Theif Shortbow + it’s bugged and swiftness doesn’t work anymore
*Longbow is inferior to Warrior Longbow, it looses damage and arrows have such a low flight-speed that you can avoid them by stepping left and right
*Axe is very situational, great when facing 2 hugging enemies: else it’s inferior to penetrating arrows /has a low single target DPS
—-
*Spirits die instantly – even within weak AoE(whereas Warriors flags can’t be damaged)
—-
*Nature magic trait is nearly completely bugged*Beastmastery trait suffers from a large amount of buggs
Completely agreed I think this is fair and accurate. If it were just 2 or 3 of these issues we would not be up in arms but because of all of them combined it is a bit daunting.
But more so due to the fact we haven’t seen Areanet respond in almost a week with a post that had over 500 replies and almost 80k views….yeah that is a lot.
Really I wouldn’t bother in this thread. DocMed has trolled a lot of posts about rangers now and this is his chance to say that he is the best and everyone else just needs to ‘ltp’.
Btw petitions are against their code of conduct so most likely will be closed just an fyi.
Path of least resistance, this will always happen, doesn’t matter how interesting the fight is, people will always avoid it if it is possible to avoid while obtaining maximum reward.
As far as I see it, there are only two viable options:
1. Give an incentive to clear trash (via unique skin drops or increased rewards).
2. Force the trash to be fought (via leashing mechanic or some gating mechanism). As long as you can get away with not doing something while still being rewarded, people will always skip whatever they can. Interest/fun is often times not a factor.
Completely agree, once you give rewards for trash it will stop happening(as much)…
Your pet does not survive CoE Alpha, maybe path 1, but path 2 and 3 — good luck, and as for Arah umm yeah.
My point is pretty simple if your pet is able to survive a boss most likely the boss is pretty easy and pet isn’t even needed but when I need him most he is 90% down for the count.
Let’s be fair pets in PvE(leveling) are actually pretty good but after that, ie dungeons, and especially any boss that does aoe or movement are completely obsolete.
Considering that almost all of your gameplay is PvP/PvE(post leveling) they are very limited in our overall damage.
Awesome and sad that we have to actually show proof but lets see if we get a ANet response.
Yeah the aoe is crazy….if we are going to be a viable pet class this has to be fixed. During boss mobs my pets are up maybe 10% of the time and that coupled with the SB nerf and situational damage we really are broken. This really seems like a complete no brainer and easy fix.
You know I don’t normally post, as a matter of fact this is my first forum post, but this is nerf is noticeable and makes no sense why no one is addressing the problem. The biggest issue is — you nerf SB without really giving another viable build option, I find it completely unacceptable.
And obviously with almost 54k views others do as well.
