I think you’ll have to wait till next weekend to test things out with Mirage. Right now I’m really confused as to what kind of Ascended gear I should make. Viper? Mayne just wait till more things are clear maybe?
I also like playing condi on mesmer and still experimenting with Chrono. I just came back to this game so I feel like I need tocplay Chrono to catch up the time i Lost not playing it hehe. I’ll try your build out. You tried providing damage while still providing some utility. What about your armor, Vipers? And how did you check your dps and what was your dps?
Thank you Starlinvf, very nice and compehensive summary on how to get ascended armor. With the new expansion coming I’m wondering if it isn’t better to wait till the new ascended armor with new stats get released before I start to make my own set of ascended armor right now
Do you think a hybrid build like this one could work with Mirage? Or will a pure condi spec work better?
Thank you for your response!
Yeah I saw somethings in the chat about a HP run, had no idea what it was hehe. But that’s the best way to clear the maps fast I guess and farm points? I need some masteries first before joining such a run, so I’ll finish the story first.
Will I be okay in WvW with only exotic gear?
Hi,
I left this game just before HoT. I haven’t played HoT and just started doing the story where you go to HoT for the first time. I wanted to ask you what would be the best move for me? Should I first complete the HoT story, then check get some ascended armor and then look for fractals/raids/WvW? Is this a good way to progress now?
Furthermore, I wanted to ask you guys how to get ascended armor (this is new to me). Through fractals or crafting I think? Are those 2 the only ways. Which one is better/cheaper? I guess focus on trinkets and stufff first (just buy them), then weapons and the armor?
And another question: is metabattle outdated? Where should I look for some good PvE of PvP builds?
Thanks for your responses. If you have any other tips regarding PvE or PvP just say so!
Honestly I was surprised also at how good staff is with viper/cele. The auto attack is actually good unlike GS where it barely tickles unless using full power gear.
Sure I can understand if you prefer Shield. I’ve always been a Sword/Torch guy and loving the recent buffs to torch damage output. If taking Shield then I’d go for Persistence of Memory.
Yeah sadly Lunar New Year is a long way off, but if you know you’re going to want to roam in Chrono next year then good idea to plan and save for the drop in price of that food. In my opinion it’s the best roaming food for hybrid or condi chrono.
Of course with Mirage not having the innate -25% to cripple/chill/immobilise I’m likely going to make a second set of roaming gear with different runes/food if stacking passive condi duration reduction isn’t as effective as it is on chrono.
Thank you for your explanation. I just returned to this game after a long break and started doing the HoT living story and stuff. Is your build also good for that? I’ll try your build in WvW, I think I’ll like it after reading everything. Do you think this hybrid is more fun/better than a full power or full condi build?
I can only speak from my own experience of iterating over the last few years, and oscillating between power and condi – from glamour confusion, moving to power phantasm, then to power shatter, then to condi shatter, back to power shatter and so on… I finally feel over the last year or so since I made this build that I reached the peak of what I have been aiming for over the course of this game.
I don’t think I’ll ever play pure condi again because it’s so slow and boring, and most likely not play pure power again for mesmer, unless there’s an elite spec that provides a kitten good reason to play pure power such as sustained power damage.
I love supplementing the burst potential of direct damage with the sustained damage of condis – it makes up for not having enough sustained direct damage and similarly not having enough burst damage while playing pure condi. It’s fun to aim for reasonable mind wrack crits while watching condis tick away maintaining pressure on your opponent. It also fits my playstyle of light bruiser with a bit of burst, rather than full yolo shatter or full attrition.
As said previously, the main weakness of this build is not quite excelling at doing any one thing, whether tanking damage or dishing it out. You may run into the odd player (arbitrary statistic) who you’ll just have to walk away from (eg one or two druids I can recall), and equally you won’t be able to facetank damage as you might be able to in full trailblazer or dire so must be more evasive (you have the luxury of making mistakes and eating the odd bit of damage here and there) – but the good thing is any player who is tanky enough to mitigate most of your damage will also have a very difficult time killing you – you’ll have the luxury of deciding to walk away from an encounter whenever you feel overwhelmed, unless badly outnumbered or in unfavourable terrain.
But overall it’s difficult to describe how to play and also does kind of require maximising every stat to be efficient (ie getting those attunements/infusion slots from fractals and getting ascended everything – though I still haven’t bothered with ascended underwater weapons…) – the nature of hybrid does demand squeezing out as much stats as possible, hence my reason for mixing in cele trinkets and headgear. So it’s a difficult one for me to say craft exotic and test, because you won’t get the same experience from exotic and will feel noticably weaker – I can recall it wasn’t amazing at the time but I had an idea of what to aim for so worked through it. You can get a flavour of the playstyle from exotic, but you’ll be slightly squishier and deal less damage (food and utility will be crucial) which prevents the build from performing as well as it is able in maximised gear.
So yeah I’m a huge proponent of this build and find it far more fun and less gimmicky/one-trick than pure power or pure condi. The only gimmick I suppose is shatter spam, but that’s the nature of chrono in pvp/wvw anyway so can’t be avoided.
I always enjoyed the condi roamer but played against Osicat with full zerker before and could best him sometimes. But I always thought full zerker or full condi missed something, that’s why I think your build would be nice to try.
About your build: what do you think about the berzerker runes with +power and + condition damage instead of the antitoxin runes you have now? And do you think the Chronomancer traitline is a must or replaceable?
Honestly I was surprised also at how good staff is with viper/cele. The auto attack is actually good unlike GS where it barely tickles unless using full power gear.

Thank you for your response Fay. I noticed you’re quite active in these forums. I want to try other classes aswell but I think I want to stay with mesmer as I’m in love with the class. Do you recommend starting over or just continue with my current lvl 80 mesmer? I don’t remember much of the living story and suff anymore but I can always watch a recap of the whole story on youtube I guess.
What about the new specialization for the mesmer, does it look good? Do you have any great mesmers I can follow on youtube or something? Because the ones I did follow are quite outdated.
Last question. I did complete the whole story and stuff. Does it continue with HoT expansion? I just need to walk to the new area of HoT and then it continues?
Sorry for all these questions!
Hi all,
I’ve played GW2 since launch untill HoT released, after that I stopped playing because I had other things on my mind. I read about a new expansion and am thinking about returning now because I really liked this game.
I was just wondering what the state of the mesmer is right now. When I played there was the (PU) condi mesmer and the regular shatter mesmer that were popular, what about now? Is the condi mesmer still viable in PvP en PvE? Because I enjoyed playing that. And what about the Chronomancer?
Great vid Slynn! May I ask why sword over scepter?
Hi Adonisis!
This is strictly my own personal opinion (play what you have the most fun with is what i think people should do).
I have a sword/pistol, scepter/torch/shield build that’s better than this one for 1v1s.
However for WvW roaming when you can have adds jump in anytime, scepter is just too slow.
When you’re fighting against 2 or 3 people (of which 1 or 2 of them are roamers themselves, not zergers),
1) scepter 3 (confusing images) just leaves you wide open to get bursted down.
2) scepter block can proc on a pet or some random clone so its not very handy.
3) scepter auto attack is still too slow and leaves you wide open as wellSword on the other hand,
1) blurred frenzy allows you temporary evasion (sorta, gotta dodge or stealth or blink after you finish though)
2) the best thing about sword is actually ileap. mobility on the battlefield when vs multiple targets help a lot. Catching and immobilizing targets is good too.
3) sword auto attack is pretty meh, but 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.In 1v1s though scepter can be pretty good if there are no clones/pets. But theres no fair fight in WvW. If i had a silver everytime i got ganked in WvW i’d be able to buy Tyria by now
Hehe, I guess you have a valid point there. Nice vids, I’ll make sure to follow u! Btw, u planning on making sPvP vids anytime too? I know this build is wvw only, but still.
Great vid Slynn! May I ask why sword over scepter?
Ahh, very good points made there @Apharma – would u suggest more of a shatter setup? is there some sort of viable setup using scepter/pistol ?? im really enjoying scepter, even as a power setup the number 3 hits effing hard. lol
Scepter/pistol combo is amazing. I ran it before HoT, now I returned after couple months of not playing and it’s still great. I just can’t play with anything else. You can run power/condi build with it, or just condi. Pistol #4 combined with Scepter #3 bursts people down with Carrion amulet. As secondary weap you can use Staff or anything else.
Yea its mainly a WvW build, not applicable atm to sPvP. But hands down fun.
It is a wvw build because of perplexity, but I am having fun in pvp too. Using nightmare + viper + Illusions gives confusion a 85% duration which isn’t bad at all.
I prefer the mantra trait for the extra condi clear charge when going vs necros or any heavy condi builds, otherwise I use mistrust too.
I have to say the build is very effective. I hope to be able to record some pvp videos soon
Trooper, u using that build in tournies or in just hotjoin matches? Wanted to make a Viper build in sPvP too, but was afraid if someone just sneezed at me I would die.

I haven’t played this game in a while, but why is no one taking Deceptive Evasion anymore?
Hi,
I haven’t played this game since HoT came out, but started doing some sPvP again about a week ago. I didn’t purchase the HoT expansion because I didn’t want to spent that kind of money just to play some sPvP matches with a chronomancer. I rocked a self-made condi build without shield or chrono traitline of course and it worked pretty well. Still I notice the amount of disadvantage I have when dueling a mesmer who has chrono trailine, shield condi build. The blocks, extra shatter etc all adds up.
So is there a place for a mesmer (be it condi or power) to excell in this current meta without having to be chronomancer?
Hi guys,
Last time I played this game was before Hearth of Thorns came out. I played other games since then, but none of them really had the combat like GW2, which is what I really like about this game. I was wondering if I missed too much to come back? Like what are the changes with mesmers? Still power mesmer with GS/Staff? Condi shatter with Staff/scepter + torch? Is the shield any good or the new F6 (?) ability? I went to metabattle to do some research but I don’t know the new sigils or amulets, so maybe you guys can help me out?
Oh yeah, what about HoT, do I need the expansion to play or how does that work?
Thank you in advance and maybe I’ll see you guys in-game!
Hello,
Keeping it short, I’m pretty new to the forum (not the game). I subscribed to some posts on this forum expecting to get mails whenever someone posts something on those posts but I don’t seem to get anything. I don’t have a list somewhere saying which posts I’m subscribed to or something so I don’t get it?
Can anyone help?
Seems like a fun build, going to try it myself sometime soon! I made up my own non-Pu condi build a while ago, 0/6/5/3/0, and been doing some Maim the disillusioned condi shatter lately which was fun too but going to try this out, you still use this build?
Btw do you have somekind of youtube channel or something?
Keep up the good work!
I’ve been using this build for the past week and it’s great! I rerolled my mesmer because of this build, found it through Osi but it’s similar to this one.
I’ve been dueling in sPvP like crazy and only lost 2 times, and those times were against a mesmer using the Iduelist. It hits so hard and with a Null Field gives confusion + bleeds.. It made me switch to Scepter/Pistol and Sword/Torch but I’m missing Staff right now, but I also want the Iduelist, what do you guys think?
Heey Osi, remember me? We dueled a couple of times in Forest of Niflhel, with shatter spec (me as my mesmer called Kryotux). I really learned a lot from that and since I’m liking the condi spec more and more I’m wondering if you want to duel sometime soon again but then in condi mode, seems like fun.
Great vids by the way, keep them up! I remember you talking about making some spvp movies soon, would like to see that. Love the condi spec, I changed it a but for personal preferences but still can’t figure out if I like staff or s/p more..
Hello Osicat, great work on your guide and all your youtube vids! It made me go back to my lvl 80 mesmer after switching it for an elementalist. Keep up the good work!
I have a question for you though, what do you run when you’re doing dungeons or fractals? (traits, weapons and utilities)
@Adonisis- It is recommend that Arcane Wave be taken with that spec for maximum damage effect, but if you do not feel comfortable going from 3 cantrips to 1 then just play a bit with Arcane Blast and as you get more comfortable you can try adding in and see how it goes.
Also it appears that some of the runes I am using in my hybrid build are not available in sPvP. So if you’re looking for a scepter hybrid build for sPvP I would recommend Phantaram’s version of the 0/20/0/20/30 http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-k34;2B2-P0w47N-Z0;9;5J-JT;159;245-40ALJ;4G3G3G3G34BS
Also I think he changed the sigil’s to battle and force, correct me if I am wrong on that please.Copy paste the url if the link does not work.
Thank you for that link. The other build of Phantaram was with Divinity runes, that one seems more balanced than the one with scholar runes I think but I’ll have to see for myself, trying to keep some survivability. Though I like doing sPvP to test things out, I’m still planning on doing more WvW so hope to see your new hybrid build video soon!
@Adonisis: Thanks! Truth be told I have not given any serious effort to sPvP for many months now as the meta (which has been the same for the past few months) is very boring to me as well as other issues with the system. Therefore I have not put much thought into sPvP builds. But at a glance given the current state of the meta as well as the gear choices a full burst Ele (as seen in the video) is not very viable in high level tourney play. The best you will probably get is going with a hybrid build like the standard 0/20/0/20/30 which has been used since the beta weekends. Picking up Arcane Blast and Wave to make up for the damage loss.
But if you’re just talking about hot joins you could probably just keep the build as is and run zerker amulet with Scholar runes and just go troll people. Just remember the margin for error is low so positioning is very important.
Thought so haha! Tried to go glass cannon but didn’t work out as I planned. I’ve gone for a more hybrid build now as you mentioned with the 0/20/0/20/30 and it’s working quite good so far. I’m running it with D/D though since I’m still not fully trusted with the scepter. Don’t know if it’s because I’m so used to D/D or I hate the scepter fire attunement for failing that easily. I had all cantrips as utilities so switching 2 of those for arcane blast and wave felt different, that why I only have arcane blast and kept 2 of my cantrips, or do you recommend taking arcane wave too?
Looking forward to your hybrid build vid, keep up the good work!
+1 to allowing us to LOG IN anonymously.
+1 for a confirmation pop up when someone wants to add you to friends. I want to be able to accept or deny friend invites. I hate that anyone can add me and see all my alts and where I am in the world without my knowledge. It is FAR too easy to stalk people.
Also, when you block a guildy, you can still see them talking in g chat. Fix that!
That’s a nice idea too. I noticed you can just add who you want without them having to confirm it. I know a lot of people like this but it shouldn’t be that hard for you to confirm or deny someone who’s adding you, that way you won’t let your friends list expand that much.
I sometimes enter sPvP as ‘invisible’ to others because when I want to test things out I hate it when a lot of my friends and guildies join my sPvP match and start ganking me for fun. Even when I entered a match as invisible 2 of my friends joined that match too. Not sure if it was a coincidence or if they were put in the same match by the game itself. They should work on that too.
Nice vid! Really liked the idea about not needing to use the fire 2/3 to really hit hard since that’s what woried me about scepter. Was wondering what you use in sPvP to ‘copy’ your WvW build since almost everything is different in sPvP.
I’ve been looking for a more offensive ele build since most eles I encouter are Daphoenix builds, I was hoping to go more offensive and crit damage seems to be the way I want to go, mixed with some more survivability, so looking foward seeing your hybrid build! I guess with your build you can burst pretty well with D/D too?
