You only have 46 skill points left? That’s five HoT hero challenges. Between Verdant Brink and Auric Basin there are five challenges you can easily get to and do without needing anymore more than one rank in gliding mastery.

No, you can only gain levels via tomes in PvP.
You can get hero points via WvW, though. Every time you gain a WvW rank, you get a Proof of Heroics, and you can either trade 1 to unlock a random core hero point, or 10 to unlock a random Maguuma hero point.
Ok, so find some NPC to turn how much I’ve leveled in WvW into Tokens… Something about rewards. Guessing this is all PvP related since it’s World vs World?

From what I understand so far, and how I don’t care for PvP, I estimate that I’ll get all my Elite skills for PvE by the end of this year. Woooo so fun. (sarcasm)

I need only a few Hero Challenges in Tyria, they’re scattered and I need to Google a guide to find them. Meh. The rest are in the Heart of Thorns areas and I need to grind Glider, Mushroom Hopping, and Exalted to:
-Reach the Hero Challenges
-Continue the Story
-Get to many of the Events
BLAH, I REALLY don’t want to grind all this stuff. I’m sitting in my Starting Area just spacing out.

At level 80 as a Mesmer, with 174/189 total world Hero challenges, needing 46 Skill Points to obtain my last 3 Elite skills…
I’m trying to get through the Heart of Thorns story so I can get more skill points aside from those last hidden Hero Challenges in Tyria.
Holy hell this grind is boring, I hate the new area, because I have to grind rep or some crap to get further along in the Story so I can get more Skill points, not just the story, but to get more of those out of reach Hero Challenges as well. It seems like everything is out of reach in this expansion.
Why can’t we just run around the world doing events to level up and and get more skill points like pre-Heart of Thorns?!
I didn’t expect to grind so much with this expansion for the fun stuff…

Glad to have participated in the Battle for Lion’s Arch, that was an amazing conclusion and I can’t wait to see what happens next XD.
Nice summary in the review also :o lol Brahm seemed way in character in this case, to me at least. I got a good laugh out of that part even though I wanted to know more.
After reading this I am a little perplexed. This game was launched in fall of 2012, which OP noted – now that means that OP has played since the beginning of the game and did not know several basic facts – how to use wiki, what a knowledge crystal was, had never done story line and did not know how to use basic lfg. I find this a little ingenuous. And in a dungeon to go back and help another toon and not stick with the folks that know what they are doing? You cannot play that way in this game in those circumstances.
It may be that this game is just not a good fit for you and your needs. If you feel it is or you want it to be you are gonna have to pull up your big girl/boy boots and figure it out. Read the wiki like a book, take notes, go to Dulfy and read all that can be found on GW, watch utubes of places you want to go and have never been to. Treat it like a job so that others do not have to carry you around.
And for heaven sake gear up and weapon up like you mean it. Learn your skills and how to make best use of them for your class. Use food, potions, oils, get some canisters to repair armor along the way. No preparation in the game is like no preparation in life, a detriment to you and all running with you.
I say to you “Buck up! Go forth! Be brave!” But it is your responsibility to make this happen and not depend on others to carry you around. Join a guild but know that the expectations are such that you will quickly be expected to carry your own weight. So use the resources available to you, become informed, learn from others and enjoy yourself.
I don’t think many of the features, like the LFG system were completely implemented during the earlier times of this game and there have been several moments during the this game’s lifetime that I have been gone for extended periods of time (several months on one occasion), so much so that the new information is almost overwhelming for the first couple of days, in combination with some of the stuff that I have yet to experience. (For as long as I’ve been playing, I still haven’t finished the main storyline for my character, nor have I gone through the Crucible of Eternity, among other places.)
I think most of my gear is exotic quality, with appropriate stats for my class and build. Sometimes I just don’t feel confident enough to do what I do in a team though.
Once I spent enough time running with that party in the Temple of Arah, I got a general idea of how aggro worked in there and used a build I had created for myself to best carry people around. It’s the small mistakes that got me in the end though, I mistimed one of my powers and since I was at the back of the group, I took the brunt of the attack from everything that was aggroed. Ultimately though I was more concerned about the hunter that kept dieing trying to get back to the rest of us. I’ve had my share of successful moments in some of these dungeons. Unfortunately, this wasn’t one of them.
(I could have let that hunter die by not staying behind him and taking the damage.)
As for using the wiki, I had forgotten about the command and I kind of wanted to ask another person instead of a machine, which I usually submit a search query to instead of ask someone. I like a good, random, conversation here and there, sometimes they pop up from questions. I largely try to avoid this though if there’s trolling and/or flaming going on.
If I knew more people I’d probably be more eager to jump into these instances and participate in some of the other group stuff, but that’s not now. Maybe in the future, who knows. As you said, I don’t want to hold people back so I largely sit on the sidelines, or do other things, like explore and adventure through the other parts of Tyria. I still do enjoy this game.

I’m sorry, but unless I’m getting paid to play Guild Wars 2 I just can’t do that, even if it means being unable to help carry others through content. I do try my best though 90% of the time.

You know, when I first read the OP, my thought was that the person who wrote ‘LOCAL’ in map chat was actually answering the OP’s question about guesting, and declaring he was a ‘local’, rather than a guest.
If that was all he said, why did you assume he was telling you to chat in /say? Seems more likely, to me, that he was answering you. I guess my advice would be: Don’t assume the worst! Good luck.
Yeah that might have been a bad asumption on my part, but it was typed in all caps and seemed to come out of nowhere. I think there was some kind of small, two-response discussion happening before that, between the person that asked about guesting and someone else. I think I instinctively acted like this from a previous game where when someone said something like “LOCAL” in all caps, it meant, “Shut up and talk in local chat!”. So I didn’t even bother saying anything after that. Normally I just move on and continue my adventures, but I was sitting, watching people coming and going and I started formulating this topic in my head about my experiences over the years and for the past couple of days.

I’m surprised that you didn’t get kicked through the dungeon run. Next time you should post “first time in this dungeon, need help” or something like that. Don’t join the ones that say “80s only 5kap+ noob gets booted” ones.

Quick response: I actually did mention to them that it was my first time running through that path and they didn’t kick me for that. They were very, very experienced with the Temple of Arah content and they had no problem with explaining, in detail, their strategies for dealing with each of the major fights and speeding through the extra stuff.
A little bit more detail if anyone is curious about what happened in the Temple of Aura. The problem in that situation was with me in part, because I tried to go back and help another player that couldn’t take two hits from mobs before dieing, which cost me participation in the long run. Anywho, that’s what happened and I shall return.
You were lucky to get a group for arah explorable that was capable enough to finish the path and weren’t elitist to the point of kicking you out of the group. From my experiences with arah pugs the group disband after the first wipe on the first skipping part, i dont frequently find high skilled groups good enough to carry a new player.
You didn’t get your personal story done but at least you got some shards of zaithan ^^

Yeah that’s really good food for thought, I was planning to mention that I was amazed I wasn’t kicked, but I left it out and just mentioned that they continued on without me. I remember during the Molten Alliance Living Story, some people got impatient with a few players that were new to the content. It was a mess, the people that knew it tried to run ahead without everyone else and nothing got done. Regardless of how chaotic things get though, pickup groups are what I’ve participated in for the most part, and some groups have been a blast to be a part of for that limited time. I need to head out for now. Thank you for the many tips and responses. I’ll quote more of them if they’ll help people out.

My best tip is to start your own LFG and write something like “first time”, maybe also “help appreciated”, and of course specify if you want story mode or explorable. That way you make it clear that you’re not an experienced, fully decked out speed clearer. Has worked for me so far.

OP, I know this does not help the whole issue, but please, add me to your contacts and feel free to ask those questions anytime I am online. I will try to answer as fast as possible. I don’t know everything, but there is the wiki and dulfy. They usually know the little details I’ve missed.
I will keep this in mind, but I usually don’t like bugging people with questions I can just look up :X unless of course it’s for the sake of conversation, which I tend to get carried away with sometimes.
You need to find some friendly guild. There are lots of people who are bored with GW2 and just try to help newbies.
I would really like to help you with dungeons, but I’m from EU server, so at least I will suggest you to look on wiki, read articles, learn more about the game. You can find the answer for everything there.

Its the internet. Just take your chances. If you get trolled and flamed, so what? Do you suddenly lose $100 of your personal value?
Just do it. Nike style, and after you’ve done it you can be on the other side trolling and flaming (or not its up to you) others who’re in your current predicament.
My objective, in this case, was to gain practical information/answers. Why ask a question when the odds of getting trolled/flamed far exceed the odds of not? I just looked the info up, problem solved. The journey continues. ^.^

I come from the Sanctum of Ral server. Earlier today, I was reading the chat as someone asked how many people guest on the server. There was no response, but just as I was about to say that many people probably do. Someone shouted in all caps, “LOCAL”, I guess implying that he needed to shut up and talk in local chat, or “/say”. After reading that I decided not make casual conversation with the channel and let it go quiet.
Now I want to enter the Crucible of Eternity, but I don’t know anyone. #sad face#
I was looking at one of the gear vendors and noticed a really awesome looking item that costs Knowledge Crystals. I wanted to ask where Knowledge Crystals come from on the /map channel, but I feared that I would get trolled and flamed.
I used the LFG system for the first time yesterday. I was trying to join a group for Story Mode so I can finally defeat Zhaitan and I got sent to a group doing exploration mode. I died several times, and towards the end, the rest of the team finished the final fight without me, while I struggled to make my way past all the stuff that the party ran passed. When I got out of there, I asked in the /map channel if anyone could help out with the final chapter in the story, but it was dead silent. This has made me hesitant on using the LFG system, because I don’t want to get trolled and flamed by people for not knowing everything there is to know, in this case about the Crucible of Eternity.
There seems to be a semblance of elitism and exclusivity among this community these days, on this server, compared to when the game first launched.
So, now, instead of teaming up with people and doing stuff, I’m sitting back, watching people travel through Gendarran Fields and typing this up.

(For anyone that mentions it, no, I’m not in a Guild. I’ve been in two in the past and everyone was kind of doing their own thing. The first Guild had a member that harassed me for not knowing something, followed by 2 people joining in. The second guild just never seemed to do anything or want to do anything when I finally decided to ask. I’m not that interested in joining a guild, because of these two things)

Edit: Interestingly enough, when I was in Queensdale the Phantasms were transparent, but after entering Kessex Hills they alternated between transparent and non-transparent.

Hey devs just wanted to toss out a thanks for how Phantasms look now. They’re much more resembling of the rest our illusions.
Makes the effect of having illusions and phantasms out seem more immersive!
Alright, back to the game I go!
Edit: I don’t play PvP content, but I’d imagine that this works somewhat to our advantage when players have to focus more on discerning which of our illusions are phantasms :P I like it overall and once again, thanks!

These Living Story experiences remind me a bit of PnP role playing. From what I can make out from these living story experiences, the devs are the story tellers and the content continues to move us forward in the world Tyria.
That’s just my take on it, I never got to experience the Living Story events back in November 2012, but I think it’s totally fine because the story is still moving on and there’s so much to look forward to. Nice points from everyone.

I like the idea of making it somewhat expensive, but not so expensive that casual level 40+ players wouldn’t be able to afford it. My emphasis on the restrictions was intended to be pretty high. For instance, changing maps would remove the NPC, as would teaming with other real players, entering a dungeon, entering an event radius in which 3 or 4 other players are in, and a limit of only one NPC hire-able would be enforced. I was thinking that these NPCs could reside in “Taverns” or various other locations where you could visit and hire them for a duo adventure.
I’m terrible at math, but as I’m typing this, my brain is trying to work out a decent scaling amount. I figured the NPC level would dictate the cost, based on the map that they’re in, for instance, a hire-able NPC in a starting area would cost significantly less compared to a hire-able NPC in Orr.
The costs for these hire-able NPCs could additionally scale with how many heart quests the player has completed for the map, a kind of renown for players to strive for to be on better terms with the NPC of the area perhaps.
Analyzing this idea further makes me realize that it’s a bit in spirit of Role Playing over anything else.

I often find myself wandering around the world by myself, doing events here and there. Just now though, at one of those off hours of the day where most are sleeping, I stumbled across a champion that I really wanted to fight. I asked for help on the Map channel as well as in my Guild’s channel, but no one is out there responding to my requests. I think it would by awesome to be able to hire one NPC for a recurring fee, with a higher scaling cost, yet similar to the the gates that we use to travel, to travel with us and aid us when we need that extra hand.

This is a topic about illusion aggro, any thoughts on the matter are welcome.
I’ve been studying Mesmer mob aggro since the game came out and I’m still trying to
figure out how this mechanic is handled for Illusions, and Mesmers in general. I know illusions don’t do much damage, but it does build up over a short period of time when the right traits are incorporated.
I usually fight with a staff, with auto attack turned off. I was fighting Jotuns about 30 minutes ago. I started the fight by creating 1 phantasm and one clone. Once the mob got close enough to the illusions, I’d use Decoy to quickly run a good distance behind him. Once I was visible again, the mob quickly did a 180 and headed straight for me. This battle was handled without any direct damage from myself o_O
I tested this aggro mechanic against Jotuns once more with a melee strategy, via a sword and torch. The result was the same as the Jotun would make a bee line straight for my mesmer, avoiding my illusions entirely until it was dead.
I’ve noticed that some mobs, like Jotun in WF and Zombies in Orr, seem to differentiate illusions from the Mesmers very quickly, whereas other creatures, like Moas and Alligators in the Sylvari starting area, sometimes take a bit longer or never at all before they go down. Notice that I said “sometimes”, sometimes mobs tend to have an almost ESP-like awareness of where the Mesmer is, regardless of illusions and Skills used to evade them.
There are moments though, in both high level and low level areas, where I’ll be standing right next to, or slightly behind, one of my illusions while I’m attacking, let’s say a bandit in Kessex Hills, and I’ll receive no aggro for the duration of the fight.
I am theorizing at the moment that each mob type, like Moas, Undead, Jotun, etc, have unique AI, which handles aggro differently, but the theory is not very well founded as I mentioned in the above experience of such ESP-like behavior.

WF = Wayfarer Foothills, and I’ll probably edit this as I have more input of my own to add.
TL;DR: Mobs seem to have an ESP-like awareness of Mesmers regardless of the skills used to evade them. This study of Mesmer Illusion aggro is ongoing for me.

The first class I created when the game released was a mesmer. After hours of looking over the wiki, seeing what each class did and puzzling over various game mechanics and possible play styles, I chose the mesmer. I tried a few other classes after reaching 80, but none has kept me so locked in, as the mesmer. Big kudos so far to the devs for such game mechanics that make the mesmer what they are.
I’ve played a little PvP, like 30 minutes out of all my time spent here, but most of my gaming is in PVE. I’ve read about “nerfs”, or various statistic changes here and there, and honestly I’ve yet to feel debilitated to the point that I no longer feel any less support capable for either myself or other players around me. So again, thanks so much to you devs out there!

I can probably elaborate on my build or whatever if people are interested. This was mostly just thoughts of good times here being spewed out into a text box, heh.
Feel free to discuss random fun times as a mesmer here, I suppose that’s what this topic is about…. and in that regard, here’s something that gets me laughing a little: I made this one Svanir mad and he went spinning like a top across the ice, through my clone, and into some Ice Wurms behind me that proceeded to beat him up. ( Before getting into the bigger portion of this post, I just want to say that I think the RPG element could be improved in Guild Wars 2 by adding more interaction, such as sitting on chairs, benches, rocks, etc…, to fishing and doing handstands or a multitude of different variations in what we currently have at our disposal. )
I remember when I got Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the Nintendo 64. I spent countless hours on that stage where you fly the snow speeder to defend Hoth, just flying around. I had my own adventures in my head, sometimes involving communication between snow speeders as we navigated the frozen battlefield. I was playing in my own little world.
I feel the more modern day users of the net have defined game play in RPGs as something much more concrete, much less abstract. It’s something akin to a person that’s only played Halo for the X-Box, being given a computer to play a MUD.
Since the days of Dragon’s Gate and UO, I’ve gone about on my own personal adventures. Sometimes they would tie into the game’s quests/side quests. Often times though, I’d find myself wandering the world as much as is allowed by the game. In UO I was a Shadow Ranger, that basically implies I was roaming the land via stealth. He had no discernible “end game goal”. He never received that “epic loot”, but he was able to sneak, forage, craft materials, and wasn’t a bad shot with the bow on your average foe. This was all expressed not so much by a pre-defined background story, but by playing the game. The experience is what developed his story and even his title.
Guild Wars 2 does define the general character role more so than UO did or the MUDs before it, but it’s not keeping me from going on an adventure and building up the character in the many facets that the game allows. Even now, though I don’t always talk in character, I will usually act as I wish for them to act, so long as it’s allowed by the game, to fit their current “role”. The same could be said for games like City of Heroes.
On an alternate note, yet related to the topic, I could sum up that the community defines the general RPG element of the game. This community can be anything, from a small circle of friends, to the entire map chat channel in a given region, given that we can communicate over those great distances. How much imagination do you wish to use? To me, RPG is never forgotten so long as I’m here.
As I type this, my character is currently sleeping under some trees and what could be described as, a starry night sky.
