hm… i rarely see dungeon groups maxing out crit chance, but that would still be a good point if i was in a more optimized group. i have a couple friends who we then fill out the party with pugs and none of them main a warrior or ranger or anything else that buffs crit chance outside of fury.

also if i’m not mistaken the ele’s damage buffs would stack exactly the same with either set up a +10% modifier would still increase dps by 10% regardless of how that base damge is working.

1.1*(power+power*crit chance*crit damage) would still multiply the damage by 1.1

tl;dr: i disagree with your second point, but your first point makes the argument boil down to how much crit chance you are getting from the party.

EDIT: friend of mine just pointed out that the dungeon we do most often is AC and that full assassin gear would prevent me from killing graveling mounds in one ice storm since you can’t crit objects like those for some reason. a slightly circumstantial point, but when the difference between either stat set is so small it becomes a pretty big deal.

… does anyone think full Assassin’s gear might outdo zerk in PvE now?

I know the general rule has always been ‘zerk is slightly higher dps but certain builds benefit from more frequent crits’ but now if you have the air spec equipped you’d get extra ferocity to boot, not to mention extra vuln from Weak Spot.

I haven’t quite gone over the math yet, but I think sin’’s might be a touch better than zerk now.

Terms of Service?

Hi, could somebody link me to the gw2 terms of service? a recent incident with a friend made me want to examine it more closely but i haven’t been able to find it.

also said friend was banned because she was playing on an account a friend gave her and we wanted to know if she’s allowed to buy her own account now? in general i think companies have rules that say ‘once you are banned do not attempt to get around it by making a new account’ but i think that given the circumstances i think she would be allowed to since buying a new account would un-break the rule she unknowingly broke.

and finally, just in case the ToS doesn’t make it clear: what is anet’s policy on sharing accounts with friends? gw and gw2 are huge part of my LIFE, so i want to make sure i wont get banned for anything, however another friend of mine no longer has a machine capable of playing so he has me login every now and then to check on a couple things. i want to make sure this isn’t a problem. if it is, i assure you i will stop immediately.

just in case i haven’t made it clear, i would be HEARTBROKEN if i got banned, i take protecting my account VERY seriously, and i am making this post to make sure i don’t get banned myself. we’ve all been on edge since my friend got banned and it would be a relief one way or another to have clarification. i’m already nervous enough as it is admitting i’ve been doing something that might be against the rules.

Jormag or Kralkatorrik after Mordremoth?

Jormag or Kralkatorrik after Mordremoth?

in Lore

Posted by: Akbaroth.2861

Akbaroth.2861

iirc when you first meat up with treaherne in the grove just before the meeting and the shadow of the dragon’s attacks he says the pact was planning to go after kralk next.

i was very happy with that statement because it fit with my predictions.

tl;dr: i think the charr would be much stronger overall allies than the norn and killing kralk would make the charr more willing/able to donate soldiers and resources to the pact

People keep asking ‘if the charr are such a strong military force why haven’t they finished of X yet?’ and the simple answer is usually that they are fighting on too many fronts now. the iron, ash, and blood legions seem fairly cooperative with the pact and by eliminating kralk while he’s presumably still weakened not only would the charr become more eager to support the pact they would also have one less front tying up soldiers.

while going after jormag would definitely make the norn happy, i’m not convinced they’d be as strong overall as the charr. while we don’t have clear population numbers that i’m aware of i’m fairly confident the charr outnumber norn several times (i’ll give my reason in a moment). while i agree that a single norn is supposed to be stronger on average than a char, they are also far less organized and have much lower tech.

DISCLAIMER: this next part is VERY apocryphal. i’m about to talk about information that i barely recall front a ‘letter to the fans’ from anet shortly after eye of the north was released in gw1. i’m not even going to try and dig something as ambiguous as that out, nor will i try to defend any information i claim to recall from it if it get’s questioned.

if i recall correctly anet talked about charr-norn relations in the letter stating that some warband decided they wanted to invade the far shiverpeaks. they were quickly met by a group of norn warriors. the ensuing fight was very feirce and (more importantly imo) very close. although the norn technically won it was by such a close margin that both races developed a firm respect for each other. the letter finished however by saying that simply due to charr vastly outnumbering the norn if even a single legion decided to make wiping out the norn their top priority the norn would be extinct very quickly (my memory says they said ‘within a week’ but i’m not going to pretend i’m confident in that statement).

between that letter and the fact that norn numbers probably took a very solid hit when jormag woke before they were wiling to retreat. the charr… while i’m sure they’ve had their loses i seriously doubt it would be enough to make a war with the norn too hard for them (barring the whole “fighting on too many fronts now” mentioned above).

though, there is stil the issue that the charr would still be heavily tied up with or without kralk, and the norn would have much smaller issues at home to deal with. I still think that it wouldn’t be enough to make them more appealing than the charr.

and for my final point i’m going to freely admit i may be a bit biased in favor of the charr simply because they are the only race i outright like, i’m indifferent to humans and sylvari, and i flat out dislike norn and asura.

p.s. this wall-of-text felt much shorter when i was writing it.

After that he will stand forever in your home instance saying ‘for Ash Legion!’ as if he never quite adjusted.

originally scarlet was going to mention the name ‘mordremoth’ just before she died.

a data-mined alternate version of scarlet’s death she dropped the name and after she died braham and i think rox were talking about “who is this ‘mordremoth’ and what danger do they pose?”

also marjory died in that version.

my guess is they forgot to bring back the mention of mordremoth’s name when they changed the scene, creating this plot-hole.

i don’t think for a moment kryta has the same laws we do, and i have played all the human storylines, i know commoners don’t get much in the way of a trial and that it takes a strong leg to stand on before you can try a noble. i’ve been centering my posts on speculating that nobles, particularly the ministers would probably fight against the use of mesmerism in legal investigations because it would be a powerful tool against them.

so i suppose rather than the original topic of ‘detective’ i was being too specific and thinking only courts of law

So What Profession Would Best Be A Detective?

Akbaroth.2861

I’m not sure about that. There are some provisions for using methods that aren’t usable in court to gather evidence that would be usable in court. For instance, if someone gives an anonymous tip they likely aren’t going to be testifying themselves, but if the tip results in finding solid evidence, that evidence is still good for the courtroom as long as it was gathered by legal means (and there is a gap between using evidence that can’t be brought to the courtroom to gather evidence that can, and using outright illegal means to gather evidence).

i’m fairly sure anonymous tips aren’t illegal. as you said, i’m fairly sure the mesmer wouldn’t simply be allowed to say ‘that person did it, i read his mind’ i was thinking more of a loophole defense like ‘that murder weapon was found using illegal methods therefore it cannot be used as evidence’.

of course people would still know the accused was guilty but it could still cause problems for the prosecution.

Similarly, a mesmer might be able to probe a murderer’s mind to find the location of the corpse or murder weapon. The mesmer may not be able to directly testify, but the evidence may still be admissible.

maybe i wasn’t clear but that is what i was trying to say in the second paragraph of my post

So What Profession Would Best Be A Detective?

in Lore

Akbaroth.2861

as many others have said, mesmer would be great because of the whole mind reading schtick, but i have a sneaking suspition the kyrtan ministry and the arcane council have banned the use of mesmerism or classical necromancy (in real life -mancy refers to divination and ‘necro-mancers’ would seek answers by communing with the dead, ‘pyro-mancers’ would look for symbols in flame, etc.) because there would be no way to know if the spellcaster was telling the truth (read as: because it would be easier to convict them of whatever they are up to).

on the other hand it may be legal to use such spells in order to FIND evidence rather than AS evidence, i.e. reading a suspect’s mind to find the murder weapon or victim’s body.

however i’ve read about plenty of cases where 100% solid evidence had to be thrown out because the investigators did something illegal to get it, so the arcane council/ ministry would ban ALL magical methods of investigation so even if a mesmer did find proof it would be useless in court.

in that case just BEING a mesmer might make it hard to provide evidence because the accused could just say ‘how can you prove you didn’t find this information via illegal use of mesmerism?’ thus dragging out the case.

i’d like abyss as the main color with sapphire for the trim.

any screenshots of a charr in the witch’s outfit would be appreciated, preferably with as close to the described color scheme above as possible, i know abyss is expensive and i can hardly ask strangers to get it just to show an idiot on the forums

if there is another way to preview it that will let me adjust the dyes in-game i’sd love to know of it, same goes for any related advice.

Why can we use Asura gates for free?

at gate hub plaza in LA an asura gatekeeper and a charr traveler discuss the cost of gate travel

Traveler: Why do you charge extra for oversized items. That service should be included. (what service? included in what?)

Gatekeeper: Fine. I’ll even offer free gate travel if you provide me a with lifetime supply of rifles.

Traveler: What would you do with so many rifles? (especially since rifles can be pretty sturdy and if you take good care of them just one or two can be a lifetime supply. ammo on the other hand…)

Gatekeeper: Protect my precious gate from freeloaders.

it’s already established that everyone can pay for gate use without having to ‘sign up’, ‘make an account’, or buy a pass first. but this gives me the impression that there are special deals you can make, perhaps like buying free passes or half-fare passes on the buss.

Akbaroth, charr male, Iron Legion. i’ve been suing the name Akbaroth since i first played an mmo and i felt it didn’t clash too badly with the general feel of charr names. I also considered giving him the last name Stormsoul, but i’m one of those people who makes backstories for most of their characters and Akbaroth left his warband (nothing bad, they kept in touch for a long time).

then again it doesn’t seem unusual for Gladium to keeo their sirname until they join a new warband so i may buy a name-change contract to add it in.

the fire version didn’t burn me very often, the earth version had 50% upkeep on crippling me, the air version maintained weakness on me nearly 100%, couldn’t get the water version to chill me at all, but it rarely chilled the golem either.

i tried it with all the other dagger1 skills and none of them conditioned me, as well as using several other skills at once, i could only get the water auto attack to do it to me. also have not yet tried other weapons.

finally “((Chance to Trigger)): 25%” DON’T BELIEVE THEIR LIES! the water version barely activated chill at all, and the burn from fire wasn’t 1 in 4 hits either.

i just checked the history of the fireball page on wiki and you are correct, the erronius description was not changed until May 7 (funfact: there seems to be a silent revert war going on about it)

i guess since the change wasn’t in the patch notes nobody noticed and therefore the wiki took a while to be updated. (and when it was updated it looked like a troll changing a random fact for no reason)

EDIT: it also doesn’t help that a LOT of staff eles use the ‘Balsting Staff’ (arcana viii) trait which widens the area of most staff spells. fireball specifically is increased to 120.

Personal story bugged

This post is 7 months overdue, but here goes.

On my first/main character i had chosen one story arc and after doing 3 missions in that arc (Shell Shock, Fixing the Blame, and Marshaling the Truth) i got to the Battle of Fort Trinity and everyone was talking about “The krait orb [I] recovered” and someone called ‘Apatia’. The next mission was a failed rescue attempt that had nothing to do with the illusion trap I had fallen into.

i finished the personal story without my progress being blocked, and i have since completed all the possible story arcs on other characters so i know what happened.

the only loose end still bothering me is that the personal story tab for that character has a clear record of the mistake (Shell Shock, Fixing the Blame, Marshaling the Truth, The Battle of Fort Trinity, Liberating Apatia)

as far as i can tell there is nothing to be done about it other than ignore it or delete the character (fat chance of that, 700+ hours on him).

that why i didn’t bother posting until now, the error has been bugging me constantly this whole time.

i don’t want the error in my personal story log changed unless i can go back and redo the missions the way i was supposed to – which doesn’t sound do-able given some of the other posts on this section i’m reading.

what i’d REALLY like is an item in the gem store that lets you redo a character’s personal story from the beginning – possibly even re-asking the biography questions at character creation – without having to restart the whole character from lvl 1

Sad and Confused

the problem is that ele is a bit subpar atm, if we spec pure damage we don’t have any survivability and therefore can’t help the team because we’re dead.

conversely our defensive builds (the ubiquitous 0/10/0/30/30 is never a bad idea) can deal solid damage with excellent survivability, but solid damage =/= high-speed.

i’m not saying your build is bad (i haven’t even glanced at it, so apart from staff i don’t know what it is) but overall if you want respect from your party members you should play something else.

IMPORTANT I’m am NOT saying people should stop playing ele because it’s bad, nor will you EVER hear me say it. I have been a devoted ele fan since Eotn was released for gw1 YEARS ago (long after it became a kittenty class). And even in gw2 i still spend 90% of my time on my ele. staff ele to be precise.

i agree these people were being elitist pricks, normally i’m willing to concede that elitists have a point buried under their egos, but when you consider how much of a waste it is to do any one dungeon multiple times a day i can’t see how a slower more survivable build is a bad thing.

p.s. i usually get tonnes of flak for DARING to imply elitists might possibly have a good point underneath their raving, let’s see how much i get for saying they might have a point in other situations!

@justin when you consider that most classes don’t have any heals except their heal skill and a couple traits eles got it pretty good with their heals. geyser and healing rain both are water fields so any blast finishers you put into them will heal for around 1.3k w/o anything in healing power so that even more healing. on daggers with the signet of restoration i rarely bother with activating it, between the heal from attuning to water (healing ripple), soothing mist being up 90% of the time, cone of cold healing for close to 1k health on a 10 second cooldown, and if i’m really in a pinch healing wave for another 1.9k.

on staff i usually use the glyph to heal and it heals for over a third of my health not counting the regen if i was using it in water.

tl;dr
it’s not that the ele’s heals are strong, it’s that there are so MANY of them

Superior Sigil of Strength?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Akbaroth.2861

Akbaroth.2861

Sigil of Superior Battle provides 3 stacks of might for 20 seconds on a 9 second cooldown so you can more-or-less maintain 6-9 stacks of might with it on an ele.

Sigil of Superior Might provides 1 stack for 10 seconds on a 2 second (wiki seems uncertain, might be 1 second) so you can more-or-less maintain 5 stacks of might with a high-crit build.

Even if it is 1 second cooldown you’d need both fast attacks (so you are attacking often enough to trigger it) and a very high crit build, to maintain 9-10 stacks of might with it you’d basically have to crit 3+ times per second on average.

Boon duration affects both sigils equally and was therefore ignored.

But there are a lot of us who actually make a lot of use out of ground targeting.

A genuine curiosity now. In what way is ground targeting useful? I am honestly trying to think of a situation where it would be more beneficial but I can’t come up with any myself.

i use the regular ground targeting to make sure i’m hitting all possible targets. too often when i use fast ground targeting there will be just one enemy just outside of the aoe.

i can understand the tiny increase in speed being useful in pvp but i never pvp and i only even do wvw for the monthly so it’s better for me to make sure i’m hitting all the foes i can with each hit.

i call it a tiny increase in speed because really, all you have to do is click one extra time, which takes less than a quarter second. i’ve played enough shooters and ‘high-speed’ games to know that competitively a quarter second is HUGE, but for otherwise it’s a modest bonus at best.

EDIT: P.S. i also don’t get larger green circles with blasting staff, there was a discussion a while back testing the details of that trait and they mentioned how it does not increase their size.

So i hear all this talk of nerfing ele's

in Elementalist

Akbaroth.2861

heh… i was watching the guild wars 2 twitch.tv channel where they talking about ‘nerfs to bunkers and changes to aoe’ which most players assumed mean they would nerf the crap out of eles.

from what i can tell most people talking about the incoming nerfs did not watch the live feed and are jumping to conclusions based some people who did watch it overreacting.

when the guys doing the live feed said they wanted to nerf bunkers they made it very, VERY clear that they want bunkering to still be an effective build, but that certain bunkers (ele and guardian in particular) are a hair too strong (yes we know bunkers don’t do much damage, that’s the point of a bunker).

they have every intention of keeping bunkers in the meta.

as the the dreaded aoe nerf they were very explicit in saying they won’t outright nerf aoe skills (i except a few may get nerfed, but it won’t be a blanket nerf to all aoes), but want to provide more incentive to use single target skills. they also said that this would have to be a careful and gradual change overtime.

i expect things along the lines of changing dungeons so that there are more points where single target damage would be useful, such as reducing the number of enemies in certain encounters, while there will be many encounters where aoe damage will be important some of the fights would be changed to fight fewer but stronger foes.

or perhaps weaken most of them slightly but also add priority targets, foes that are only one in a group of many but should be taken down first for whatever reason.

i’ll admit that with guild wars 1 anet doesn’t have a good track record for balancing, but those of us who have been paying attention to the news of gw2 for the past 5 years know that they designed the new skills/traits system from the ground up with ‘ease-of-balancing’ in mind.

and one last thing, they keep assuring us that they want to do more slow careful changes, so even if i’m wrong and a mass aoe nerf is on the way i don’t expect it will be all in one update and they will have plenty of time to see how bad the nerf is.

Personally, I think a sort of terf war would ensue, in which both claim to have Tyria’s best interest at heart but come from different points of veiw.

One question: E3 has a huge CD, how can one keep any sort of permanent aura boon up?

the adept minor arcane trait (arcane fury) adds 2 seconds of fury on attunement swap, with full boon gear it goes up to 3 seconds, and since most eles are swaping constantly the extra boost from the Air I trait (8/30 seconds with that much boon gear) brings ‘lots of fury’ up to ‘permanent fury’ if you attunement swap 7.333… times in 30 seconds

@daphoenix, i noticed a couple of errors in skill descriptions you gave.

first off
water1’s damage is single target, only the healing is aoe.

water1 and air1’s in-game tool-tips say that they have casting times of 3/4ths of a second, the wiki agrees, though i have not tested this myself.

earth1, you forgot to write about it’s casting time like you did for the other auto attacks (3/4ths of a second according to both the in-game tool-tip and the wiki).

second off
blasting staff is very inconsistent and there are a few things in your descriptions that should be changed to reflect this:

note: i just went through and tested each staff skill that i thought would be affected to make sure (fire1,2,3,5, water1-5, air2,4,5, and earth2).

fire1 has a radius of 90, the tool-tip was incorrect for a long time but has since been updated. it IS affected by blasting staff though the in-game tool-tip doesn’t say so.

fire3, air2, and air4 are all affected by blasting staff but the in-game tool-tips don’t change to reflect this.

fire5 does not appear to be affected by blasting staff. i found a giant mushroom in caledon forest the same width as fire5 without the trait, and then with the trait i keep casting on it and not one meteor has missed the head of the mushroom so far.

and finally

water5 has a minor bug with blasting staff. the white line that is supposed to mark the edge of the rain’s effect does not increase, but the actual radius increases as it’s supposed to (a purely graphical bug).

i also feel it may be worth noting that blasting staff does not increase the size of the green circle used for targeting ground-targeted skills. this applies to fire2, water 2-5, air5, and earth2.

@Konig. I think part of that is the fact that magic-users are traditionally villains while knights are good. you know, “The virtuous knight slew the wicked witch!” and it wouldn’t make for a very good folktale if it ended with “The virtuous knight had his eyes impaled on toothpicks and placed in a margarita. Afterwards the wicked witch went back to seeing if children’s bones made better bread dough.”

There’s also the fact that a lot of these stories portray the magic-user as very powerful to begin with and that the powers of goodness (love, hope, gas stoves, abstinence from pre-marital sex, etc.) will always triumph over evil’s baked goods in the long run.

my point, i suppose, is that a tall tree catches much wind. the wicked witch has probably baked a hundred knights at 350* until it reached an internal temperature of 210* before one showed up who was ‘purer’ than the rest (and therefore he took too long to bake and managed to stab her baffled face with the pointy end of her oven thermometer).

Akbaroth's Soliloquy

okay, since this is a thing i wrote, i feel obliged to respond.

I’ve been watching the ele section since this forum went live, but out of severe self-consciousness and a lack of anything to say i’ve merely been lurking. not that i want to stay quiet, around people i know i’m talkative, entertaining, and the jovial center of attention. around people i don’t know i’m shy, quiet, and i keep my thoughts to myself.

for a while i was too afraid of a negative response to actually come back and see what people thought.

Elementalist Stole My Heart

I never knew the glory days of the ele. In GW1, I joined just before Factions was released (very early on for those who don’t know) and played Monk for a long time, believing my calling was to be a healer. I decided to try something new and played an minion master Necromancer and I thought for sure this was my true calling for over a year.

Then… I discovered the elementalist and I was enthralled beyond words. The power I felt commanding the elements, the ability to destroy all who would do this world harm was euphoria such as I had not known in all my days.

But then I heard words, terrible nasty words. Vial words spoken in tones only the broken can utter.

I heard tales of days since-passed, days when the might of our fires were loved and feared by all.

Days when we Elementalists knew true glory. But this was absurd! I KNEW the power i had, I could not fathom that this bore the abhorrent title of… Underpowered.

As time passed I learned things, terrible nasty things. Vial things only the truth can teach.

I learned that I lacked the power I thought I had, that the time of Elemental Glory had been and gone.

I shattered. I could not go back. Not after drinking from the flask of pleasure I had tasted when first the earth shook at my command, when the skies first thundered at my voice, when fires first would still themselves before me, when the harshest falls and fastest streams first gently held my feet aloft upon it’s surface.

I knew what I must do.

I knew as the moon knew to reflect the sun in the dead of night.

I must persevere. I must stand my ground upon the earth as the tidal wave known as weakness washed over me. I would bear it with the grace of the wind or else let it’s fires consume me.

To this day I remain as ice, firmly frozen in place with the earth crushing around me. The air itself tries to suffocate my devotion, but with the strength of the flame I will not die.

I will instead stay true to my cause and wait patiently for the time when glory will return to us. In due time we will awaken from our dreams and hear the clamor of war! Gods and spirits alike will know our might when the very fundamental formulae of the world bow in honor and respect to us!

You know, I was feeling very depressed this morning before writing this. Now I feel quite alright.

Her face is so misleading… it’s like the part you could always see is one colour, then bam, suddenly grey.

for an ash legion spy that not bad bad thing, is it? if no one realises this is the person under the mask…

9/10 very traditional sounding name. though it feels a little unimaginative, no offense meant.

Akbaroth Stormsoul, Iron Legion. I made up the name Akbaroth as a username when I was around 8 and have been using it ever since. I felt it didn’t clash TOO badly with normal charr names, even if it’s not 100%. He and his warband separated a few years back, so he doesn’t use his surname (bandname?) often (long story, nothing bad). ‘Storm’ comes from his prodigious skill with elemental magics, especially wind/lightning based spells. The Soul warband gave themselves that name because ‘it sounded cool when we were young.’

He is full of logic, reason, and [seemingly] dead emotions.

honestly, if i could live in a fantasy universe AND have whatever lifestyle i chose i would sooo be this sort of mysterious background character manipulating the ‘hero(s).’

so if not for for the fact that in the herald’s first letter he not only says he has people working for him (I WORK ALONE!) he doesn’t know why Destiny’s Edge broke up (I know EVERYTHING!) i would say that I’m the herald.

tyria has a lot of naturally occurring magic in it’s environments. i’ve always viewed magic as ‘the other half of science,’ so to me it makes perfect sense to see phenomena that defies ‘our half of science’ (the half we get irl), within reason anyway.

i’m not saying “A wizard did it, therefore anything is possible” (hence, ‘within reason’), but i’d be surprised if ambient magics had no immediately apparent on the natural world.
