Magic Find as progression rather than type

Yes, another magic find topic. Reading the others, I got the idea that magic find has certain properties that make it ideal as a gw2 style progression mechanic.

  • I provides a benefit
  • It provides no combat advantage

So here’s the proposal:

The consortium has been hyping their big announcement for quite some time, and the day has finally come. You gather around, and a speaker from the consortium steps forward. He proclaims that they have made a monumental discovery in the field of treasure hunting. It seems that shiny objects have a higher likelihood of attracting other shiny objects. As a result of their research, they’ve extracted the Essence of Shininess.

“Shinies?”
“No skritt, not for you!”

However, in the process, they’ve made a substantial number of promises to fund their research. They’re willing to trade an Essence of Shininess to anyone who can help them alleviate those debts (dungeon tokens, fractal tokens, badges of honor, karma, etc..).

So you step forward and purchase an Essence of Shininess with whatever currency you happen to have acquired. After a brief explanation, you leave the plaza and head to the mystic forge. As per instructions, you throw the following into the forge (as an example).

  • Essence of Shininess
  • Knight’s Armor of the Whatsit
  • 20 Globs of Ectoplasm
  • 60 Philosopher Stones

Upon handing it to Zommoros, you get back a Shiny Knight’s Armor of the Whatsit (which has all the same stats, but an extra 3% magic find).

As a side note, you’re informed by the speaker that Travelers and Explorers items are inherently shiny, and cannot be shinified.

No, they should have to thinks of TONS new skills and their heads will basically explode

I’m not sure that’s what the OP was asking for. It sounds like OP wants non-class weapons to be like environmental weapons when equipped.

So if a non-magic class picks equips a staff, they see the same set of skills you see when you pick up a wooden plank.

Dungeons reward system bug

I also had the same issue. I ran 5 explorable paths today (4 of which were first run achievements), and my reward tokens were 15, 6, 15, 15, 15.

We ran all 3 Twilight Arbor paths, and 2 of the Caudecus Manor paths. Other members of party were getting 60 tokens per run.

I chose "Fail to protect someone" as my greatest fear. Later on, the story had me go back and try to save someone I've never met before. But they say she got captured on one of our missions together.

Over the past 2 days, I’ve received 15 tokens for every run (5 run sample size, different dungeons, different paths). Most of these were first-time-ever running that path.

I’m glad I’m not down at 6, that really sucks, but I’ve never gotten more than 15 when everyone else is getting 60.

Staff suggestion - symbol stick

I like the idea of turning staff into symbol spammer. Im using Valor/Honor Traits, so it will be perfect for such a staff setup. Alas, i dont think Anet will make such a huge change…

Would it be a difficult change to implement/balance? Or do you mean any changes to ability sets would be unlikely at this stage?

I don’t know how others are using guardian Staff skills, but I rarely find myself using #2. And #4 is only useful in a stationary fight (it’s nice in that case, sure).

So what if the Staff was instead a weapon designed for throwing around symbols.

Here’s my suggestion:

1. Wave of Wrath – As is
2. Symbol of Vigor – Applies short term vigor buff
3. Symbol of Swiftness – As is
4. Symbol of Might – You wouldn’t get as many stacks as Empower, but you wouldn’t be frozen in place either.
5. Line of Warding – As is.

What do y’all think? OP, UP, downright crazy?

I just wish our column of light acted as an underwater “symbol”.

It’s kind of sad that one of our class features (and all associated talents) doesn’t work in water.
