Lost motivation to play...

The problem that I see is that, like everything else (life, politics, etc), the wheel that sqeaks the loudest gets the oil. What I’m trying to say is that, when they made this announcement, they specifically stated that they did it because of the people who were complaining that it essentially WAS NOT like other games.

People who enjoy this game, weren’t taking to the forums, because they were pleased with how it was. However, those who wanted the cookie cutter mmo experience, who are used to/expect the grind, didn’t “get” the game and wanted justification (a carrot on a stick) for the money they spent on the game. So they QQd about it, and the team gave in.

The quote in question is this:

“As we watch Guild Wars 2 mature in its Live environment, we have found that our most dedicated players were achieving their set of Exotic gear and hitting “the Legendary wall.” We designed the process of getting Legendary gear to be a long term goal, but players were ready to start on that path much sooner than we expected and were becoming frustrated with a lack of personal progression. Our desire is to create a game that is more inclusive for hardcore and casual players alike, but we don’t want to overlook the basic need for players to feel like they are progressing and growing even after hitting max level. Adding item progression is a delicate process normally undertaken in an expansion, but we feel it’s important to strive to satisfy the basic needs of our players sooner rather than later.”

So the developers rushed the content to shut the people up. I don’t think we’re ever going to get a game that is a “breath of fresh air” because you’re always going to have the people who hit lvl 80 in three days, then start crying “wtf” on the forums, instead of enjoying it. And when they do that, they ruin the experience for everyone else because the devs have to dumb the game down to the lowest-common-denominators who play it.

p.s. – when the devs say “but we feel it’s important to strive to satisfy the basic needs of our players sooner rather than later”, I think they need to realize that post-legendary gear is not a basic need. It’s not OUR fault these players rushed the content. Let us enjoy our kitten game, and give us OUR basic needs.

Please fix the Trading Post

I understand that alot of this is being done in order to combat botting, but it’s making for a shallow and frustrating experience. Maybe I don’t have the answer, but if you have a function for merchants to enable you to “sell junk” to them, then why block the trading post from selling anything else under the “vendor value”? I don’t really think I’m being clear, but, let’s say I go to a vendor and sell my junk. Then I hit the TP and something has bottomed out at the vendor item, I have to go back to the vendor and sell it individually?

Why not remove the ability for the vendor to buy those items (essentially allow the vendors to ONLY buy junk), and allow us to have a truly competitive market on the TP? I feel it would make the entire buy/sell/trade experience that much richer.

Again, I don’t have all the answers, and I’d love to see some discussion of this below, as to why it would or wouldn’t work. One of my personal draws to a game is a free market trading area, and up till now, this only feels like it’s mimicking one. It has the potential to be amazing, it just needs work, that’s all!

3-hour one time events are NOT terrible...

Ok, so, I was one of the ones kicked twice and never got to finish the event; I feel burned like the rest of you. However, my disagreement is not based on the event itself.
I think one-time events are actually awesome, and they help make the once-in-a-lifetime stuff that could shape Tyria pretty kitten cool (note that this one did not change Tyria like it said). However, the loot was the issue. I fully agree that if you’re going to do something like this, than make it in such a way that people will want to experience it for the story it presents, and how it will change the world, instead of the proverbial “carrot-on-the-stick” of loot that everyone emo-rages about after they don’t get it. That way, if they miss it, it’s not as big of a deal to them, and you don’t have to do away with the one time events that make this different than other mmos.

TLDR: One-time events are awesome, but the reward needs to be adjusted accordingly.

TWICE tried to run event, once it randomly crashed (at 1am) and the second time was taken down for a new build. Love your game, but that’s BS…if it’s going to be a ONE TIME event, then have it be ONE TIME I’m ok with that. But to allow us to try time and time again only to pull the run out while we’re in progress is in poor taste.

Having the same issue here as well.

Like having one of the Elder Dragons attack one of the major cities – like Jormag could attack Hoelbrak or Kralkatorrik could attack Black Citadel. And having like Leaders of every Tyrian Order take their most elite soldiers and would go to the attacked city and would fight the Elder Dragon. These events could happen like every month and they could somehow change the look of the cities (destroyed/breached walls, destroyed building etc.)
What do you think?

See, I like this idea, there’s PLENTY that they can do to increase the immersion and make it epic. They’re trying to simulate a real fantasy world environment, and there’s plenty of ways to do that

Do you have any idea how much time and work it takes to make an event like the Mad King? It’s asking a lot to have that once a month… and let’s not talk about all the bugs that would have to be taken care of.

I think an event like this every 3 months is reasonable, along with smaller events and content expansions.

I may have mentioned in my post that the time seemed prohibitive, however, when they promised a game that changed dynamically on a DAILY basis… my point. Because the game does not change dramatically on a daily basis.

However, they have the structure in place, and if, perhaps (sheerly conjecture as I’m certain it’s not possible) they had a shadow team working on content such as this, if they get a pipeline going, they could theoretically pre-plan years of content and release it as necesarry. They’re certainly making the money, though I know it’s a trade-off with not charging a sub.

Is There Even a Decent US Based Server?

Lonely? I feel overpopulated, and I have played on two US servers so far. Henge is a good one, though I’ve switched off that one now.

This is not a hate or flame, but constructive criticism that actually made me excited for this game once again. (Text wall, incoming!)

Guild Wars II has billed itself as dynamic, world changing (both in and out of game), and that actions of people and events in game will change the face of Tyria permanently… and up till now, I’ve not seen it. I’ve played, grudgingly, but haven’t really gotten “sucked in”. However, this halloween event has made me see so much potential that I really, really, as a humble player, hope that this is the direction the game a)will go b) was planned on going. I know it’s not plausible to have events like what we’ve seen in the mad king story line happen every day, or every couple of days. But even once a month would be epic. Sweeping, WIDE range story arcs that take you all over tyria, in places you’ve been but for new and different reasons. I don’t claim to know alot about this game, I followed it here and there as it was developed.. but what I was EXPECTING when the game came out was what we were delivered with the Mad King story arc. And I’d love nothing more than to see more of this, but more often than simply for holiday events. I’ve heard talk that that’s exactly what they plan on doing, and I truly hope I’m right. THAT would be a game changer right there.

Once again, I’m most definitely not hating on ANET, and I hope I don’t come across that way. I simply was disappointed and let down at first by my own expectations, but they’ve now been revitalized. I’m hoping that it’s possible to take the game in this direction, though I know that is a very prohibitive process.

::Gets off soapbox::

TLDR: Hooray for sweeping and world changing story arcs, we can haz more and more often please?
