I’m hit with this problem this morning as well. :\ No amount of retries is fixing it so far… ANet please give us some response. It’s been hours apparently.
…Actually I picked Meep every time. -_- Dead last. Repeatedly. At least until picking someone else when he gets second. The very first time he was literally fifteen seconds behind the pack after the final stretch, after having been in second the entire race until then. -.-
First off, count me in with the crowd that thinks the Moa Racing bets are way too expensive in the first place. And to have to get second place to even recoup your losses is ridiculous. Plus, it’s needlessly forcing lowbies out of having a real chance at completing content, since this game’s weird currency system means if you’re in your 40s or 50s and lower you’re going to be out of money in just a few unlucky races. NO ONE has that kind of gold on a lowbie unless they’re alts or have seriously generous friends.
But, that’s not what I’m complaining about in particular. The issue is that the Moa Racing achievement is part of the meta in the first place. And not even a random “Win 1” that is at least semi justifiable, but three.
Achievements should not be based around nothing but luck, especially temporary achievements that aren’t even going to be around forever. Achievements should be about your own skill and the amount of time you’re willing and able to put into work for your progress, NOT whether or not you randomly happen to guess right while having enough money to keep guessing if you continually fail.
I personally blew 2 1/2 gold on a level 30-some character and watched my moa come in dead last every time before I said NOPE, not happening. It’s ridiculous. This should not be any part of the meta at all. If you’re determined to keep it in, fine, but remove the Moa Racing from part of the meta at the very least.
I’ve been trying to level my cooking for awhile, but I can never craft what seems to be the most basic recipes. I keep seeing things like loaves of bread and pile of salt & pepper being very low level to craft, but every time I put something in the Discovery section it doesn’t even work. I put Black peppercorn in and it says it needs 275 cooking to use, same goes for nearly every other supposedly simple recipe. What gives? >.<
I come back to check on this tonight randomly… I just don’t know. Then again 99% of the type of people that frequent a game’s forums are the type to support it no matter what.
All I can say is I’ve been on three different fansites/boards today and seen three different polls with the majority votes happening to also mention the unstructured PvE/lack of roles is the biggest thing missing with the game.
Say all you want that people need to “l2P” or whatever else that boils down to telling people they’re just “bad”. Meanwhile the rest of us will be hoping ANet opens their eyes and realizes this gameplay needs some massive tweaks.
Most items seem reasonably priced though, at least from what I’ve seen. It’s only the Runes (so far) that are ludicrous.
I know this has been mentioned before, but I thought it needed mention since from what I can see it really hasn’t been acknowledged. Runes of Holding are simply way too expensive.
At first it’s not really a big deal at all, perhaps up t 10 slot bags…Then suddenly you get a 500% price increase from one Tier up. Not to mention the 500% price increase is laughable in cost as is!
For some reason you don’t like players having money. I don’t know why, but a single gold in the game is a real accomplishment even at higher levels, which is…weird.
Crafted Rare gear sells for half as much as a Tier 4 rune. Let that sink in. An entire crafted chest or leg piece made with karma recipes sells for 50% of the cost of a single rune for a BAG of all things. This isn’t even counting the following Rune prices, either.
I don’t know a single player in their 50s that has, well, 50s per bag to drop freely on crafting. I myself have just over a gold now, without buying anything off the broker or wasting money needlessly. The only major purchase was my Level 40 trait line book.
I’m not saying right off the bat people should be freely crafting dozens of high-level bags, but the costs as they stand are utterly ridiculous. Even my level 80 friend who asked me to make him a set of Wool-Tier bags balked when I told him how much silver per bag I needed. Never mind the larger ones.
Rune prices seriously need a major adjustment.
Adapt and overcome. Or leave. That’s the blunt truth. The trinity isn’t coming back, at least not in GW2.
Probably not. While I feel like there are quite a few options to have avoided this in the first place—aforementioned any class fulfilling roles with the right trait lines not the least among them—I’d be foolish to seriously expect the game to change so drastically ever. Perhaps in an expansion down the line, but even that’s getting my hopes up needlessly.
My statements regarding Trinity options are more of a “What if” scenario as to how it could have gone better from the outset.
That aside the dungeons are still a mess and still need fixed in some way to compensate for the lack of roles. Once again, without healing/aggro management/etc, a zergfest with bad mechanics does not a good time make.
There needs to be many changes. Aggro management at the very least. Lack of targeting downed players, definitely. Less one-shot “save or die” mechanics in every. single. fight. And so on.
You’re also designed with several utilities and built in mechanics to avoid dying a lot.
…Really? Where are they? I see none. Ever. You can’t CC anything so that gets rid of blinding/snaring/etc, you can’t drop aggro to avoid getting one-shot by snipers/bosses/whatever else, and in an attempt to stay true to a tab-targeting MMO while still trying to reach for being “actiony”, the stamina recharge on Dodging takes forever.
No, really now people in this genre scream and shout about not wanting clone #131344 and when they finally get one that actually tries to be different some of you do you best to try and change it into yet another clone. Then you scream about how its nothing but a clone and abandon the game. Honestly what the kitten is going on!
Where did I say I wanted a clone? I love the gameplay of GW for the most part, I love the weapon swapping, I love the jumping puzzles and vista/discovery-hunting, I love the crafting (other than actually grinding mats for it…). I don’t want another WoW or I’d still be playing WoW, not have quit shortly after Tier 11.
The problem is you thinking Trinity = clone. Roles exist in games for a reason. MOBAs have roles, SHOOTERS have roles, etc. Again, I really believe that ANet went too far in the other direction trying to stand out and be different, to the point of fixing things that aren’t broken.
In many fan polls I’ve seen on other sites as well, many of the highest voted options on “What do you think is missing?” are “Class roles/the Trinity.” MANY people besides myself think, now that the lack of roles has been seen in earnest, that ANet dropped the ball with this one.
Ideally they could make each class be ABLE to fulfill any role in certain unique ways—make Thief a Dodge/Mobility/Evasion tank instead of armor-clad, etc. I feel like that would increase the pool of players taking these roles instead of the “If you want to tank, be one of two classes” mentality.
But without roles, every dungeon IS a zergfest with no direction at all. The lack of aggro mechanics is probably the worst offender, but the entire situation is a mess.
…And proof of this is the fact the team is more concerned with me using the company name in my topic title and Infracting me for a perfectly valid post instead of realizing there’s an issue. Good lord.

Not really a huge fan of how the dynamic events have played out, I’m afraid. The actual events are great fun, especially the zone bosses, but FINDING the things is horrible.
I’ve been made to understand as well that Hearts aren’t the main point of the game, which is why late-game the zones are literally nothing BUT events, but this makes leveling and enjoying the game a huge pain in the butt.
What are you supposed to do? Just randomly run around a zone hoping to run into something? Just the other day I spent half an hour running around a zone hoping to find an event, I didn’t run into a single one.
Once you’ve cleared a zone entirely (hearts/vistas/waypoints/etc), if you still want some karma or cash, well… Good luck? I can’t honestly believe you’re supposed to just constantly run around somewhere you’ve already seen most (or all) of hoping to get lucky and run into something going on. This is really poor design.
lrn2play or go back to WoW, I hear pandas drop tommorow so go back there
Cute, a fanboy. Very helpful. I haven’t played WoW in over a year but I’m sure that oh-so-unique “insult” took all of 5 seconds for you to think up.
So, first thing’s first. I’ve played MMOs for over a decade now. I’ve played nearly every major title for a fair length of time, and a whole lot of minor, f2p ones thrown into the mix as well. I think I know my way around the genre for the most part.
Now, that said, I’m a support player at heart. I like DPSing and tanking fine, but I’ve always been a Healer. Even in shooters that allow Medic loadouts, I’m always geared up with stuff to keep people alive. When I heard that ANet thought the Trinity was “broken”, I was wary at best. As the game came out, well. My fears were with good reason.
Upon hitting 30, my 80 friend took my girlfriend and I into AC with his guild members. Never before in ANY MMO have I had a worse experience with a dungeon. Moving further into the game was only a slight improvement. Running into list format for easier check marks:
- First and foremost, the lack of the Trinity makes this an utter nightmare. There is no way to pull aggro, there is no way to really keep people alive, CC does little to nothing, the entire dungeon is nothing but a chaotic zergfest.
- Bosses are a nightmare. The jaded part of me wants to think ANet deliberately designed dungeons to be a gold sink with how much time you’re spending dying, repairing, and zerging right back in again from a waypoint. All of the above points make this impossible as well. With no way to keep aggro, no way to keep people alive beyond some extremely minor, long-CD healing, no CC, every fight is basically a rush to kill them before they can kill you.
- Loot is pathetic. You realize the point of dungeons is to get some sweet loot, right? The story mode and explorable modes are fine and all, but with nothing to look forward to but many, MANY runs to gradually build up enough tokens for a dungeon set of armor, well. The entire thing is a slog. I know ANet had this philosophy of all “But it’s not about the loot grind!”, but just like the lack of Trinity, you don’t fix things that aren’t broken. Besides, it’s not about the loot grind. It’s about the token grind. Congratulations, you really revolutionized that one. Hell, you grind MORE for the massive amount of tokens than you would to get the gear normally from the dungeons.
I remember the first time a boss dropped and I was just “…There’s no loot?” This blew my mind. I cannot honestly believe there’s no dungeon-quality loot, merely random chests that more often than not have nothing you can even use. Hope party members have things to trade!
- You’re designed to be killed. A lot. Never in any MMO have I died more in dungeons than this game. Nearly every single mechanic one-shots you (at least as a clothie) and is almost impossible to avoid. With Adelbern’s ground fire you have about half a second to get out of the circle before it suddenly pops up and you’re immediately killed. In CM the golem randomly aggroed me and one-shot me with missiles. A sniper one-shot me later. The list goes on. This is utterly ridiculous. Once again it’s just a tedious rush to kill them before they kill you. Er…before they kill you too many times to pay for repairs, anyway.
Long story short. These need redesigned and/or the Trinity needs brought back. This isn’t a MOBA where people are forced into a role they don’t like just because the “team” doesn’t have said role yet. If people are playing a tank or support, they like playing tank or support. These roles are always going to have less players because your average dudebro gamer wants to see big numbers and feel like a boss. That doesn’t mean the system itself is bad and people that DO like doing things beyond zerg rushing every mob in the game should be shut out entirely.
I really like a lot of the dungeon sets too, but between the mechanics and lack of a dungeon finder leading to standing around for half an hour trying to put a group together like pre-Wrath WoW, I don’t EVER see myself bothering to beat my head against a wall long enough to get any. And that’s a real shame.
Most things about this game are fantastic, but every possible thing that could go wrong with dungeon design, did.
What class are you playing?
I don’t think it’s an issue of class. And even if it was, it SHOULDN’T be. If it’s a personal story it should be doable with any class without major issue.
But they’re ALL like this. Every personal story is absolutely insane to solo. My girlfriend and I just did the battle on Claw Island last night alone and it was RIDICULOUS. I can’t even count how many times we died to complete swarms of Risen spawning endlessly and randomly pulling aggro.
That was one of the worst examples, but many, MANY story quests are like this whether you’re at-level or not.
I can’t speak either way in regards to Trahearne, except that he seemed an alright character for a guardsman (which is what I think he is in the Sylvari story).
He’s supposed to be a Firstborn researcher who’s researching Orr, etc…Then suddenly becomes Commander of the unified army, steals the sylvari PC’s legendary sword when it’s your Wyld Hunt to actually do the fighting against Zhaitan and he’s supposed to just be a researcher, and…yeah. Screw Trahearne.
10/10 you made me rage He’s my number 2 most hated NPC in this game, second only to “Run home and cry to Jennah Logan”.
Oh my god, I agree. I HATE Trahearne. Like I just said in the Charr thread, Trahearne seems to be the equivalent of WoW’s Thrall in “Forced Mary Sue key character we’re supposed to all love.”
Being a sylvari I’m especially annoyed at him just yoinking my sword out of my hands when he’s not even “supposed” to be fighting. I’m just, “Yeah, uh, buddy, whose Wyld Hunt is actually FIGHTING Zhaitan again? Yeah. GTFO pls.”
I think he has a TERRIBLE VA too. Norn-level bad. I can’t believe you didn’t stick with Liam for such a major character and just relegated him to generic NPCs. That man’s voice makes me melt like butter. When I heard Mender Serimon I was just “OH GOD YES.” Then…Trahearne.
I’ve only really put a lot of effort into the sylvari story personally, but I’ve seen one of the Asura stories from playing with my girlfriend the whole time.
Honestly, while I love the sylvari as a whole much more than I expected after seeing their aesthetic rework, I haven’t been a fan of the stories at all. While the White Stag and Malyck stories were interesting in general and dealing with the Nightmare Court is always fun, I never really felt like my character had much to do with the story. She was never the focal point of any of them other than dueling a few Court members. Otherwise she served as a side character for the White Stag and Malyck.
It’s the same thing that bugs me about Trahearne, to be honest. He’s supposed to be a Firstborn and some powerful character, but he comes out of nowhere and suddenly takes command of everything, and even nabs the sword that should, by all rights, have ended up being given to the PC for their Wyld Hunt. Do you know the WoW questline of reforging Quel’delar? It’s okay to give PCs legendary weapons! Trahearne supposedly isn’t even supposed to fight (we all know how that goes), but he just “Oh I’ll take that back to the Pale Tree for you and totally won’t keep it myself!”
I feel like Trahearne is Guild Wars’ Thrall in terms of being a forced Mary Sue we’re all supposed to rally behind. I really don’t like him at all, but that’s neither here or there atm. More of a digression from the same issues with the sylvari story bleeding out into main sylvari NPCs.
Overall I’m not really a huge fan of how briefly the stories are resolved either. Each one is only a few levels long and then suddenly and abruptly it ends, never to be brought up again. The “helping a lesser race” chapter is especially immersion-breaking. While I can see wanting to get aid against Zhaitan as a viable mission, that doesn’t seem to be the purpose going INTO the quest…Which makes taking time out to be some random Tyrian anthropologist very odd and misplaced.

This is still going on. I’m stuck unable to continue with my story since none of my regular group can join anything. How is this not fixed yet? Or even addressed? This is a huge bug. >_>
Same thing’s happening with me and my group on Tarnished Coast. Can’t join any of my story quests, put a bit of a damper on the rest of the night. -.-
