I am enjoying the game on my ranger… I rolled ranged because I heard that you have to dodge and move a lot as melee.
I want to roll a melee, but do not want to run around a lot to avoid getting crushed.. If I see a red circle on the ground I move… but when you are standing in front of a mob, I can not always see them getting ready to strike… but when they do strike, they take a lot of health off…
TLDR>.. are there any professions that can stand still (Most of the fight) and dish out some damage…
Awesome.. thanks for the help. I will defiantly look into getting more toughness if it means I will not have to run in circles the whole time..

So I have been playing a Ranger and it feels like easy mode so far (lvl30)… pet holds mob, I shoot mob.. cake.
I am working on an Engineer… here is were I need help. I understand I am not a melee fighter and need to move (kite) while fighting… the problem I am having is on the keyboard.
I use the following set up for keys:
Attack buttons:
1 – F
2 – R
3 – C
4 – Mouse button 4
5 – Mouse button 5
movement is standard W,S,A,D with Q and E as strafe.
So with a standard one mob pull (pistol/pistol) I unload my attacks 2-5 and if not dead I use Q to strafe while holding the right mouse button to move camera… using attack 1, auto attack… while clicking the 2-5 when off cooldown… simple.
the issue I am having is that I just unlocked grenade kit and am using it… but all the attacks are ..hmm what do you call it… umm… fast cast ground targeting.. to save the step of clicking button then ground.
so I have the auto cast range thing selected, where when you click the attack, it goes to where the mouse cursor is. The problem is that the standard attack is also a ranged attack and not auto cast.. so i can not kite around.
If I try to kite, I am using the right mouse button to move camera as I run in a semi-circle to stay out of range of melee.. if I am using right mouse button to move camera I can not place cursor on the target to cast grenades…
on top of that, I have to lead the target or the grenades will land past the mob.
Am I missing something.. is there some easier way to accomplish the simple task of killing a mob?
Sorry for the long post.. but I was unsure how to get all the info listed.
thanks,
Oh and the standard grenade
huh? they want it to keep resting each time we switch?
What would be the purpose behind this? Just curious as to know why they would intentionally do this.
So I have a few pets now and switch often, but it seems like their names keep resting when I switch them out.
I rename them…. then when I switch them out, they go back to their original name.
??
I cant speak much for the other classes, but I have played a Guardian and Ranger so far (lvl15). I know not very high, so I may not be much help.
I started out Guardian because I like the Knight feel and want to help others, but he has no real ranged attacks to pull mobs.
So I tried Ranger and I am LOVING IT!! so far…. I am now 19 and I love the ranged / melee ability. It really changes things up.
We are not melee masters, but I will attack from afar and normally my pet is enough to hold them off, but if they get close I switch to Greatsword (Love the animations) and finish them off.
I just love the fact that it can do both ranged and melee… (just remember your not a warrior, do not try to go straight melee)
Also, if you go Ranger, get a bear pet quickly… they make great tanks… cats seem to squishy.
Whatever class you pick, have fun:)
Hello,
My name is Boldar Stormfist and I am from a small village in the Northern Shiverpeaks.
I am a Norn Ranger who enjoys hunting in the wilds. I seek the friendship of those who like to explore, hunt and the occasional beer near a warm fire.
- I am looking for a mature, friendly guild to share adventures with . Please pm me in game to talk:)
Thanks all!
MaRko… Great advice on switching pets in combat… never thought of that, ty.
I am enjoying the Ranger now…. lvl 19. Running Longbow and Greatsword and loving it:)
Thanks all for the inputs.
I wish I had 40-50 fps… that is good.
I have no issues with my old clunker, except in WvW, where there are a ton of ppl, then it bogs down.
I say keep it:)
I love the way the leveling system works in the game… you can pretty much run around exploring and crafting, helping with scenarios, etc.
So much better than linear quests… -go get me 100 dead frogs to make a pie.
I find exploring fun, trying to get every point on every map…. if you do you get a bonus:)
Also, if you have completed all your area and are still to low level, you can travel to Lions Arch, then to other races areas and do their quests…. your level will adjust for the are and you will get xp.
Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.
I am enjoying the greatsword on my ranger right now… hopefully it will last … lol
Quick Question: Which class do think has the best capability of ranged and melee combat.
- Meaning they can attack from afar, but also hack it up when mobs get close.
I am guessing – Ranger.
You?
I like it… 8/10
Boldar Stormfist
I guess I will just learn to love it. I just wish it was more…. “stealthy” sounding.
lol.. ok. I have not played those classes so I’ll give you that one.
Anyone else find the sound a bow makes when it fires kinda annoying?
It doesn’t sound anything like a bow shooting.
Wish they would changve it…. at least make it a little quieter.
I’m new to the game but I was told that melee rangers can put out some dps… and guardian dps is weak… now your (op) is saying guardian can put out more dps than a melee ranger?? Now I’m confused.
Thanks all for the advice… much appreciated.
Thanks for the help Dahkeus.
I like the ranged ability of the Ranger, but also really like to melee it up with a sword to… So I guess I get the best of both worlds.
You said a 1h build? how about the great sword… is that any good?
Thanks for the tips Arc.
I did not know Guardians have low hp. I keep thinking of them as tanks, knowing well that there are no real tanks in the game.
I am torn on which to level…
K, one last question…. Can rangers fight at melee well… or do they need to stick to ranged attacks to survive?
Can a Melee spec’d ranger put out as much damage as a ranged spec’d ranger?
Hello all,
First I will admit that I am a “wow” player…. I know, I know… I am ashamed to admit it…lol.
I had been playing wow for 8 yrs and am really… really looking for something new. I have played a lot of other mmo’s but none had filled the need I was looking for.
So I just started GW2 and was a little skeptical at first… The controls seemed a little odd and I wasn’t quiet sure I was liking it…. But after a few hours, I did not want to stop.
I really like the exploring and multiple things to do while out in the wilds… I have dabbled in RP a little before, but I am really feeling the RP vibe here. I love the Norn and their background. I love the snow and the mountains and nature. I will play the Norn.
Sorry for the rant… anyways, my question is about professions. I am really liking the Guardian and Ranger so far, but unsure which to take to 80.
I am trying to think long range and figure out what I will be doing at end game. I like to help groups and people, but also enjoy soloing. I have no desire to be top dps in any group.
I see Rangers can carry Great swords, is their melee damage comparable to their ranged damage? that would be nice. If I played the Ranger, I would like to be a melee spec.
TLDR. What I am really looking for is advice from Guardians or Rangers on the pro’s and con’s of their class during the leveling process. Do you still enjoy your class at 80?
I would like to learn from others before I invest tons of hours in a class I may not really enjoy.
thanks,
