I get what you’re saying, but I think you’re coming up with a solution to a problem that’s already working itself out. Ascended weapon crafting’s introduction along with the new magic find mechanics pushes the market to salvage even more items now than ever. I find myself salvaging all of my greens more than I did before, where beforehand I used to throw them into the forge in hopes of a rare to salvage. If you considered how much of a material sink ascended weapon crafting is, I don’t think you’d have an issue with the market’s saturation. If your idea is that any sort of item’s salvage be able to get any tier, for example a level 5 piece of cloth armor giving gossamer scrap, then I believe it would throe the balance of market materials off. To implement your idea would wither cause the market to get flooded even more with more or less every material or it would cause a drought of material due to what would most likely happen in this scenario. The salvage rates for these higher tier materials would be abysmal. The level system idea works because even if materials from all tiers would be able to be salvaged from a piece of equipment, it would allow for higher level equipment to have higher chances of obtaining one tier, (the tier closest to its level), and would allow people to obtain materials that they desire.
To speak on your accusation that t5 materials being saturated, and the market flooded, there’s an idea called supply and demand. The real reason the market is saturated is more or less due to the previous living event with all of Scarlet’s lovely invasions. If you have ever participated in an invasion, you would know that the amount of salvageable materials along with boxes and bags would have been quite massive considering the frequency and the amount of people who rushed to participate. Some maps that would normally be spacious had overflows within 5-10 minutes. Mind you I hail from Anvil Rock which a mid to small sized server. As I said before, ascended weapon crafting is meant to act as the material sink to help balance out the markets along with the update to crafting itself.
On some final notes, you will not always only obtain lower level equipment when playing in low level content areas. Of course you’re going to come across equipment that is scaled to the map’s level, but I always find myself coming across equipment scaled to my own level. If you’re a level 80 wandering around Queensdale as I often find myself doing, you shouldn’t have too much of a shortage if you’re trying to gather up. Keep in mind too that if you play an alt, which would be said lower level character, you’re going to find yourself with your own stock of t1-4 materials as you make your way along. Arena Net has shown me they (somewhat) know what they’re doing with their markets.
I’m extremely offended that the Norn, who are not human, are forced to wear clothing. I know a few Nornies and they hate wearing clothes, especially the female variety. Let the Asura have all the clothing the Norn no longer need.
This is a splendid idea! As long as all full on nudity is contained.
As soon as I saw the female asuran pit fighter armor I knew this thread was coming…
Whoever made the female asuran armor really wasn’t thinking when they did it. (or more likely just copy/pasted the male armor.)
There are actually multiple armor pieces that have the asuran go “topless”It’s the same with female charr’s too :P. I do not find it extremely offended, but only just lack of creativity on their part. So I hope they can come up with some cool armor sets for those asuran / charr girls
That would be a best case scenario I think. I think that both females of those races deserve their own cloth sets.
Pretty sure the lead content designer decides what they are
The Asura were actually introduced with the Eye of the North in the original Guild Wars. Wasn’t Ben Miller the Lead Content Designer at that time?
No idea, didn’t play guild wars one much.
But then again, were there any topless asura in GW1? If not, that’s just more evidence that this is lazyness on part of the modeling department rather than a design decision concerning sexual dichotomy in asuran culture and/or biology.
It is more and more concerning because it really does seem to be lazyness on the part of the modeling department. What concerns me the most is that they would allow this type of pornography to avoid making a few extra models to cover up the proper areas.
For anybody who is saying Asura are not mammals

Interview with Eric Flannum, lead content designer at Arenanet, he is asked about Asuran biology and blatantly states they are mammals, complete with mammary glands.
I think this settles it. They have mammary glands with a biology extremely close to humans. There are NIPPLES and they are THERE. They need to be COVERED.
Make a petition for pasties.
At this point, it would be better than this full on nudity.

The Aura have an extremely similar process to child birthing, which means that there is genitalia similarities between the Asura and Humans. This must mean that they are mammals, for mammals are the creatures that give birth to their young aside from a few exceptions such as sharks. Mammals feed by their mothers milk, and knowing that their anatomy is extremely similar to humans, they do have a need for nipples, and they should be there. Most Asura characters also only live up until 20 due to lab mishaps, meaning that the Asura character is younger than that. There is a high chance in that regard that the Asura character is UNDERAGE!!! For sources, check the official wiki.
Actually, that they quite obviously do not have nipples indicates that they are not mammals at all, since all mammals provide milk for their young. So either there is an Udder hidden underneath that skirt, or they are actually (as I have always expected) reptiles – and particularly repulsive ones at that….
Official biology says that they give birth like mammals. Reptiles lay eggs.
Also, reptiles are cold blooded. The Asura naturally live underground. This means that the Asura couldn’t be reptiles since full on life underground would kill a cold blooded reptile.
All I see is skin. No nipples breasts or anything. I don’t wear gloves in public, am I displaying nudity?
Asura anatomy is different than humans and their ‘bits’ are different than ours, obviously. It would be a lot worse if you went to a farm, those cows don’t wear underpants man.
False, check asura underwear, the females cover their breasts.
This is somebody who understands my cause.
Me thinks me does smell a Troll!!!!!
I hope not. I hate the Champ Troll in the Vale the most.
OP, just walk around spamming “no one look at me, I’m nekkid.” No one will look at you then. Also, play with your eyes closed. That will solve all your concerns.
If you read the post, I am not the Asura. I am the Norn in red behind the Asura, looking away in shame due to the full on nudity.
Ohh, soooo. Why were you looking at some other species nakedness? Do you make your dog and cat wear clothing? ^^
Dogs and cats are animals in the wild in real life. Charr are unique animals, and they have fur, but they also have equipment to cover what their fur cannot. The Asura have no fur, and they are NOT real animals of the wild, and as such they are expected to wear clothing and to cover up all of their FULL ON NAKED PARTS until an ESRB rating change is made to the game.

Do Asura even have breasts like human women? Do we even know how they mate?
That said, some of the armor in the game is way too revealing for my tastes, but I just use a transformation crystal on those to get the stats I wanted and keep my better looking outfits. I’m running around with starter armor with end game stats because I like the look, and anything I wear, I wear for the appearance. (I probably have a dozen different armor outfits and most of those with stats I plucked from armor whose look I didn’t like.)
Me, I would rather just have more armor choices overall … if that means we have to get some fantasy babe armor in order to get some nice outfits too, I’ll live with it. Nobody is forcing us to wear the armor. (though trust me, I’ve been frustrated when buying what looks like a great piece of armor on a guy only to find out it’s underwear on a girl)

We must do something about this! This is an outrage! I will write a letter to my congressman DEMANDING that something will be done, because the Asura are small and therefore must be children therefore exposed breasts on female asura is child pornography! ArenaNet will be prosecuted most harshly for this egregious injustice, this CRIME AGAINST NATURE!
Your support is most appreciated as well! Writing a letter to your congressman should help resolve the situation. No congressman wants to miss the opportunity to make good publicity though shutting down child pornography.
Wow.
Just…
…wow.
How did this thread even get traction with a single response?
This is absolutely pathetic.
Yet you responded too. Your cooperation in bringing notice to this tragic situation is appreciated.
You are kidding, right?
If not, you can not ascribe human racial taboos to non-human races. If you see a female bear wearing nothing but a tutu, you do not cover your eyes, feeling aghast. (See Kodan armor.)
Bears are animals of the wild. Bears in the wild do not wear clothing. Therefore, it doesn’t matter if the Kodan wear armor for they are bears.
I am extremely offended and disappointed with what I am seeing here. My friend, who happens to have a female Asura, put on their new armor set. I viewed the set on the Asura and my Norn was nothing but ashamed. There is BLATANT NUDITY with this armor set and most likely some others due to negligence on Arena Net’s part. Last I checked, there was no full on nudity warnings with Guild War 2’s ESRB rating and I demand that something be done. Not for my sake, but for the community. This could also be considered degrading to females because it forces female Asura to wear male Asura clothing, as to say that they have no choice in the matter, even if it does cause nudity. I’m disappointed Arena Net, I had more faith in you. You had my trust, but it’s starting to slip. I think it’s time to step up your game.
I’m going to skip all the comments in this thread to answer the two questions directly.
1. If we were to do that, it would depend on how cash was made but it would directly affect the economy int he worst way possible. If we have cash coming from rare loot, the value of rare loot decreases and the rest of the economy acts accordingly. If the source of income from the boosts to make this equal comes from cash inflow, we have a catload of inflation due to the value of a gold piece decreasing. Mind you this is not taking into account the gem market and the value of gold to actual cash ratio. (For all we care, we can convert the value of gold into Yen or Rupees.)
2. If we were to do the opposite by bringing down to make a CoF p1 run as optimal as the currently known methods, it would depend on how they would change the dungeon. I am all for nerfing CoF p1 to make it match, it’s an easy target to be abused. I’ve even made a bit of scratch off of it. The problem is that they can change how much it is worth it in two ways. CoF currently gives you the cash of a normal dungeon run with a dungeon run that isn’t even challenging to toddlers without hands once you know the little tricks of the dungeon itself. From here, you have two choices. You can either make the dungeon a lot less profitable by means of cash reduction while making minor changes to the dungeon, or you change the dungeon itself so that it is still just as profitable as far as doing any dungeon run goes, but it’s not a field of burning sunshine and lollipops that you can finish within 15 minutes. Personally, I would like some changes to be made.
With all of that said, I would rather meet in a middle ground. I would want Anet to take CoF, and somehow change it in a way so that it is a dungeon run, but not one that you gripe and moan about when you need something like titles, achievements, or tokens. (Spoiler: Everybody and their Warrior has their own CoF equipment already so you won’t look special gathering tokens for equipment.) Inb4 more people say it’s fine the way it is. It’s a good cash intake, but it’s just asking, maybe even begging to be abused.
Tl;dr- Nerf CoF p1 to a level where it doesn’t suck to run but trying to farm it is a pain in the kitten
I’m at 2.8k attack, 34% crit, 2.9k armor and 14.5k life, using your setup except for lacking a couple berserker trinkets. I went to Southsun Cove to try it out after i went to Orr. Just 1 of those Young Karka’s or whatever they are, face tanking them with a hammer and then with a mace/shield setup. Would always take me down to less then half life.
As for this, did you remember to block/dodge their initial water jet burst face tanking? Standing there in a single spot really doesn’t help when fighting in PvE as possible as it is, especially against something like a Karka.
Personally I would suggest changing the Strength in Numbers trait to Defender’s Flame. If you plan to stack might in a zerg, you might as well condition hem all with loads of burning. I also think that the 0/5/30/30/5 trait build would work well, the five on Radiance for the purpose of sPvP if you plan to burst your virtues and Renew. The AoE blind from Justice gives some cover after you burst your might, as well as an after stack.
Different purities of gold would add new mechanics, for better or for worse. It would depend how it was implemented into the game.
The point of this post was largely to highlight the absurdity of how gold, the currency, is valued against gold, the commodity.
It seems to have gone over most people’s heads.
Are you saying that you actually read my post and thought about why I would of posted it? You pretty much hit the nail on the head, though I don’t mind the economic and philosophical talk about logistics, in and out of the game. That main reason you stated is pretty much why it’s in this forum and not in General.
It could possibly make everyone drunk enough to forget about it at least.
My Norn guardian firmly believes that the gold standard is not an appropriate choice for the current economy, we should instead move immediately to adopt the ale standard instead.
I think my Norn guardian would agree too, though I think that all Norn would end up in debt and with nothing but a belly full of ale.
I like you, Leno. From what I’ve seen you’re always straight to the point, and logical about it. The saddest thing in my book was how the former debt ceiling problem was “solved”. It was raised, and then vacation was had for all.
I feel flattered that this simple thread actually caught attention as an argument. As there is now discussion of real monetary value, I think this calls for some discussion on how a real monetary system works AKA, An explanation of fiat money. If my memory serves me, the standard for money is gold. What controls inflation and deflation is two things. The amount of gold a country has in it’s reserve, and the amount of liable printed and minted currency is out. When we have a dollar, it’s like a promise from the government that we are liable for one dollar’s worth of gold, an amount that changes depending on the economics and economy. In reality, deflation of the economy means that our money is worth more gold promise wise, while inflation means that each piece of coinage that we own is worth a less amount of gold, even if it is still say an ounce. There really is no baseline for money other than actual gold. It’s one of the reasons why it’s a good idea to invest in gold when the economy is going sour and into a situation such as a repression. It’s also another reason why people who normally invest in gold and hold onto it profit. The economic circumstances allowed them to trade their gold off to a buyer for say, 10 ounces worth of gold in money.
As for the idea of a financial sector, I would like to put in that as noted before, drop rates are indeed controlled by Anet. Though I’m sure it would cause a great force to move a heavy hand, but having such control is dangerous when a new economic mechanic such as that one is implemented. I think it’s fine enough having two, three if you count Gems, forms of currency and Karma acts as a sort of selective currency that gets you the things that money cannot sometimes buy.
So now the discussion comes to this. A fiat money system would mean that there has to be some sort of unified governmental or baking system that backs the monetary value of gold coins with something of value. It isn’t platinum because that’s definitely no more rarer than gold in this universe. Even with the fiat system in place, there’s still counterfeiters in the world today. As I said before, it would really call for some security measures on the coinage, which would require some sort of unifying banking/governmental force to ensure that the currency between all “countries” is counted as either legal tender, or coinage of value. I would promote the idea of a currency exchange sort of situation, but we don’t see anything of the like around, and everybody seems just fine with gold, silver, and copper coins.
“ingot” does not have any size associated with it. neither does “coin”.
If you sat down and mined gold ore for 5 seconds, how much do you think you’d get?
Anyways, it’s entirely possible to have 1g gold ingot (size of a drop of water) and 200g gold coins (size of a small coaster)
If you want to talk about the metaphysics of space consumption in Guild Wars 2, then let’s go. You are able to carry up to eight 20 slot bags. If you want to argue that the runes of holding in the created backpacks apply as magical, then let’s try the 20 slot starter bag. This bag here can hold things like Charrzookas. That exotic rifle is larger than some Norn players. Better yet, we need enough ingots to create things like weapons and equipment. If we use the term Ingot as a standard size for a bar of metal, then it’s hard to make things like sword hilts and blades out of tiny ingots. In a way, my whole beginning post is a sort of way to look at the small things in the game, and wonder how something like that could of slipped through without any thought, if there wasn’t one. We all know that in the game, there isn’t a way to process gold ingots into gold. But the thought that we have these small gold coins worth 1g, and these ingots of gold worth less than a silver, it’s funny to wonder how this really works out without some definite and logical answers.
With that being said Olba, remember that it’s possible to cast the same details into the counterfeit when smelting the coins down. Unless there was some sort of special fail-safe, it’s hard to exactly protect your money. The US dollar for example, has many. One of the most commonly known is the thin metal strip within the middle of the bill. Because of the complex process that is used to weave the metal strip into the bill, many would be counterfeiters are either deterred, or are caught because of it. Without the aforementioned unified government, and each “country” having it’s own casting system of their unified currency (if any), this could mean that many different types of coins come with different fail-saves. Though, I highly doubt that such kinds of techniques to protect the regular coinage in Guild Wars 2. With that being said, even if the casting were as complex process, we still have people in the US who counterfeit the dollar bill to major degrees, going to great lengths to perfect every aspect to ensure they evade detection. Even though the US dollar is one of the more secure bills today, that doesn’t stop many. Some of whom I might add, have been very successful.
You’re right, as this is philosophical discussion. We are assuming that the coins are solid gold, as I doubt from the looks that there is a system to plate or cast gold onto things aside from dipping a coin in molten gold and then pressing it. The most centralized government would have to be in LA if you could call it that. I see each civilization as their own country, and LA as sort of a hub when all of them are put together. As said before, we really don’t now the dimensions of either, nor do we the purity. The difference between a barter system is that there is a centralized currency, and aside from special cases where items could be used as a form of currency (1k karka shells for the ancient karka shell earring for example), we’re not trading off hairy spider legs or ectos for other goods, unless those hairy spider legs or ectos happened to be a form of official currency. If we take into a more literal account that ANet is like an omnipotent god of the land and that they control the central money system and implying that gold disappears, then many of the factors are taken out of consideration. For example, if I were to purchase an item form an NPC, you could say that the money is moving, and is still in play whereas in reality, the money is gone. it magically vanishes. Alas, I digress. The fact of the matter is that all “countries” take the same kind of gold, silver, and copper coinage and that there is no difference between a gold that I obtain in the Black Citadel than I do in Hoelbrak.
So in the end, we have to put all of our trust into them. I just find it a problem that such a loophole exists in the system. Investing now in goods that would be prime items later on should we go back to a bartering system would be a great idea considering the circumstances. Even if we have drop rates, we still have players and even some shady looking npc’s that I think would be willing to smelt down some cold bars and cast them into gold coins. Because of how money magically disappears though, this could also potentially cause gold to be as costly ad gold coins, depending on the amounts defined in each. Until then, it’s back to counting pixels to define the measurements I suppose.
Friends, Family, people I really don’t know, I would like to bring a matter to your attention. I would like to be nit-picky and talk about the value of gold in Guild Wars 2.
Now, when we think of gold, we all think of that little yellow circle of currency we all desire to have plenty of. Some of us on the other hand, may also think of things such as gold ore and/or ingots. The problem with this, is that we have a bar of gold, which has much more refined gold, than the actual gold coin with a market value of 1g. Currently, gold ingots are selling for 58 copper on the marketplace. This brings me much fear for the market of this game. Sure, many would say that it’s all in the markings of the coin, a piece of metal isn’t a penny unless it’s minted as such. That may be true, but counterfeiting would be a very feasible skill with the kind of technology available, and there have been no counterfeiting measures shown within the game. For all we know, the kitten coins could even be blank. For the sake of the argument however, let us assume that they’re minted coins. It would be a simple matter of taking these coins, making a clay imprint, and ultimately creating a casting to which gold bars could be smelted down into coins, causing havoc and chaos within the economy. Think about it. One gold is 10,000 copper. At 58 copper per ingot, that’s a little less than 178 fresh gold ingots that you can smelt down into an amount of gold we can only guess at, not knowing the exact measurements and purity of each.
The matter at hand troubles me greatly, ANet. It’ll be like Nazi Germany’s inflation all over again, except with sacks of gold in place of bundles of paper money. Somebody will go to buy a basic salvage kit to find that the price has raised another 30 gold within the few minutes that they were busy. People complain about market listings as it is, but this inflation problem would put even the Black Lion trading Co. out of business, and power in a world where currency no longer holds any value. Gold is only the worst part of the problem at that. We still have natural silver and copper nodes out there that can go through the same process.
So what do you say, ANet, would you care to explain how we would fix this dire situation? The ball is in your court.
I think the real difference is that one is a spectral type, while one has particle effects. Ironically, I think the cheaper of the two is better looking. Why would you want a spectral piston that has so little detail to begin with when you can have some sweet purple particles from a pretty skitteny pistol.
Perhaps an easier perspective on this would be to look at the shard itself. As long as shards are account bound, it might be easier to gain the skillpoints on an alt, or to make a new alt entirely with the purpose of easy level-ups and skillpoint farming throughout various maps. It would be a lot easier than forcing yourself to level 70 times through experience alone, that much can be said.
Anyone know the armor sets these are from? I did not see them at the vendors.
In the first picture, I know the helm and legs are from the craftable, level 80 Draconic exotic set at 400 armorsmithing, and the shoulder pads are part of the Dark sPvP set, as is the helm in the second picture. As all sPvP sets are avalible in the actual game through one method or another, the dark set parts are from karma vendors in the Straits of Devastation. I’ve actually put the helm on my guardian, as you can see.
My Norn Guardian Sterilis, from Anvil Rock with a local street cat.
Maces with exclusive skins only available from the forge would be the Mystic Cudgel (Though there is a red version of the skin with the Inquest dungeon weapons), and the legendary mace. Honestly, I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my hands on a Fixer Upper, a mace with the skin of a classic plumber’s wrench.
As far as I’m concerned, I either scrap or sell crafts that I make from discovering. Discovering is the best way to level your crafting, and also the cheapest. At higher levels, (I know it’s 375 for weaponsmithing), you can craft rares over level 70 that you can salvage for a chance at some ectos. Normally I end up gathering the raw materials myself, and buying the cheapest secondaries on the market with the amount depending on how many inscriptions I can make with the plated dowels I have. In a sense, it’s best to work your crafting professions up in order to get to that point, as well as having the benefit of being able to make items for yourself, and friends alike.
Ladies and Gents, I have arrived.
Name: Mr. Thomas
Main Character: Sterilis
Current Server: Anvil Rock (And thinking of sticking to it.)
Interested Activities: I generally like to explore, currently I’ve been trying to piece together my exotic equipment, but I enjoy joining in on WvW, PvE, running through dungeons, (AC Story is debatable.), maybe a little RP here and there, (As rusty at it as I am), and seeing the wonders of the world.
Active: I’m on quite often, though I live in East Coast time. (US) Considering that I’m a full time college student with kids in the family, I’m usually on later and stay on just as late.
Additional Comments: Running around mostly alone has been fun, but it’s always nice to have others to hang out with. I’ve been playing MMO’s for years and know a thing or two about this game, though the Devs have really changed the playing field with GW2.
Would I like to join the Project?: Sure, I’d be interested. If not for the people, then for the humor.
I’m curious to figure out if there is actually a set recipe for this named exotic mace, or if I simply have to gamble rares in the forge and hope to strike gold.
