I got up to this one this morning and now understand why GW2’s popularity circled the drain.

Wow. Just wow.

For starters – only a very teensy, tiny minority of players (eg. raiders) enjoy this style of content. Supposedly kick kitten evil champions who are strong but cannot deviate from a stupid pattern. And you locked solo story content behind this. Not clever, ANet. Not clever.

Secondly, it doesn’t need tuning so much as a swift kick to the nads. Even just the first white mantle ambush is nuts. Then Adrienne is absurd. Your companions do very little to help and there’s so many adds.

Die, wait a minute or so while a companion rezzes me, instantly – yes instantly – die again. Repeat. Repeat. Exit mission to repair armour (which is plenty good btw). And again.

Part of my problem is likely location. Australian latency means I have a good 200-250 ms handicap when it comes to getting out of attack telegraphs. Adrienne in particular is impossible to avoid. I see her attack, attempt to dodge but am hit by the attack anyway.

I’m disinclined to attempt it again. Even if I get persevere and get past it, games are meant to be enjoyable. This is not enjoyable and I have to imagine that there’s more content like this beyond it.

This game’s initial and substantial success was built on being the very opposite of this.

I found this previous thread and it doesn’t look like anyone “concerns” were ever addressed.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/lwd/Caudecus-Not-everyone-is-a-Guardian/first

First off. I am a casual player. I do not and will never raid.

I came back to this game after the recent HOTS sale. I have leveled both a Ranger and a Revenant through the newer content. Getting past this boss with the Ranger was extremely hard and I was downed several times, but the Revenant was a completely different and miserable story. By the time I limped out of there I had been smashed into the ground more time than I care to count.

A combination of poor design and me not playing the perfect meta build made this a nightmare. I am echoing what other players said in the previous thread, but since you apparently did not listen I think it needs to be repeated.

1. This room is entirely to small. I am playing a Norn who is at the maximum height. If I can not see what is going on, then how can I possibly react to it? Your camera is tight spaces is TERRIBLE.

2. The small space also gives a double wammy to my particular skill selection. Which includes Vengeful Hammers. Anytime I was forced against the walls or had to move against them to avoid the countless AOE attacks, the ability was automatically deactivated.

3. The CC feels entirely to strong. One mistake can easily result in 10+ seconds of being pinged all over the room. The Jade Bow round adds even more CC to the mix and its spawn time is horrible. You get both of these kittens at the same time.

General observations and complaints.

1. All the “heroic” story NPCs in this game are idiots. If I am going to be traveling with them for countless hours, grow them a brain and design some better AI. The only thing they have been good for is picking me up off the ground. Mind you not while I am downed, but only after I am dead.

2. I had MUCH more fun with the final bosses of HOTS and your most recent chapter. Both had interesting mechanics and plenty of room to fight. I felt like I was on my toes, but not completely overwhelmed.

Also, the class dividing is just lol, we get 2 thieves while opponents gets 3 dps medi guards (were all solo queue’ing)

[Brain Blast] Taking the "th" out of stealth.

in Thief

Posted by: yolo swaggins.2570

yolo swaggins.2570

In a recent topic I listed a few things that needed to happen before thief’s strong points were to be nerfed. The idea is to replace thief’s reliance on stealth with a combat design based around theft (BECAUSE THIEVES STEAL kitten, RIGHT?!) while turning stealth into an extra tool the thieves have access to.

What this would accomplish is making thief more malleable to balance changes while making thief fun and effective (also annoying) in it’s own unique way. Through theft, the thief will be able to gain defensive and offensive capabilities normally not available.

Now the way Theft is going to work is like this:

1.) Each skill and utility will have some form of Theft ability.
2.) Theft abilities only activate when criteria is met. For example: if someone has Protection at 76% HP or more and is hit by Heartseeker that has a Theft ability stating “If target is above 75% HP, steal a boon.” the remaining protection gets applied to the thief.

Now I have some ideas of my own, but it would probably be more fun to ask for everyone’s ideas first. Before I let you do so, I am going to list the possibilities I am looking at and if there is enough I might list them. Here is the list of the type of Theft effects I am looking at:

  • Steal a boon.
  • Switch a condition with a boon.
  • Apply a boon on you and apply a condition on your target.
  • Copy affected allies boons onto you.
  • Transfer conditions onto affected targets.
  • Steal Endurance.
  • Copy a random skill from target. (Replaces w/e is in F1 slot. Single use.)
  • Etc.

Let the ideas flow!

So, a bit of an update on my situation, after spending a few days playing with thief I’m starting to win my 1v1s again with d/p. The only profession I can’t seem to kill are condi engineers, but I expected that. (This is in spvp, btw)

The build I’ve found the most success with is the panic strike 6/0/2/0/6 build for d/p. I’ve curiously never tried it before yesterday, and I’m hitting myself for not trying it earlier. Before I could never see myself without executioner, but with 6 points into deadly arts, I don’t even notice the difference.

Though, while I’m able to win most of my 1v1s again, I still have the same problem of feeling like I have to greatly outplay my opponent if I am to win. Ironically, the only profession I don’t have to put a lot of effort to win against is other thieves. When I rejoice at seeing a thief over any other profession, I can’t help but feel something is wrong.

However, while I’ve found better success with thief, I’ve found even greater success with the other professions. The axe/sword longbow celestial warrior is stupidly good at 1v1s, I’ve even found myself paying attention to my other monitor when playing it sometimes. And the hambow build destroys team fights with facerolling your keyboard.

Both meta engineer builds are amazing. I almost rarely go down, and I can often win 1v2s and even a 1v3 in one case. What I’ve found when playing engineer is I don’t seem to even be trying to actively hit my opponent. When I take damage or pressure, I just kite away while throwing aoes all over the place, and when I look back after I recover, my opponent is already at half hp. What? Why is that so strong? I honestly get mad when playing my engineer because I would never be able to have as much success with my thief as I do with it.

And the new power ranger is just hilarious. I’ve killed thieves with a single auto attack and a hasted rapid fire more times than I can count. S/f fresh air eles are also stupidly good when you can just blow up any thief you see in under a second while having amazing defensive abilities such as 4/5 earth, 4 air, and arcane utilities.

While I’ve mained thief since beta, having over 1300 of my time dedicated solely to playing it, and finding it the most fun class to play, I’m finding more and more reason to not use it in sPvP aside from having fun. The other professions and builds just outshine it in nearly every way, and can do exactly what it can do with half the effort and dedication. When I have to spend every ounce of my concentration to win a 1v1 on my thief, and then switch over to a profession I’ve played 30 hours with and can win 1v2s with ease, it makes me want to quit the game altogether.

It’s frustrating. It really is.

Honestly, I didn’t like too much the Boss Blitz.
Too much serious business for me. I like a more relaxing gameplay.
Plus, some people there is mean and elitist. There’s good and nice people too, but the rotten ones spoil it.

I like much more the laberyntine cliffs. There the people seems to be more happy, helpful and nice in general.
And the cute baby Dolyak race is awesome.

Being AFK part of the living story?

in Festival of the Four Winds

Ilium.3160

I haven’t posted nearly as much ever as now on this forum because currently, I’m AFK. Since the new bosses have been tuned to discourage large groups and scales them up to ridiculous levels, players are asking others to stay out of the fight, and wait in the center of the Pavilion until the event is completed. So this is what I’m doing, at this very moment, instead of having the ability to enjoy other parts of the game, or feel like I am taking an active part in the event, the most helpful I can be is by waiting, AFK. And the boss mechanics of the pavilion seem to encourage it, the ideal setup would be for each group fighting the bosses to complete them at the same time. But there is no way to monitor how all the other groups are doing without some other kind of communication.

This seems to be common in this update. At the Zephyr Sanctum, I wait AFK at the finish line of the dolyak race, since I can’t complete it again to feel like I am contributing, I just stand there, and ALT-Tab to the forums, or wherever waiting for the event to end. The same thing for the other event, once we get up to over 100, I just wait until the timer runs out. I haven’t yet done the gauntlet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it also required waiting, twiddling your thumbs until it is your turn.

This is not interactive and enticing gameplay. And I’m still sitting still in the pavilion, even now, AFK waiting on the end of the event.

Any thoughts?

(Also because zerging was the way to go last year, so it may just not feel lika a new, ’I have to figure this out#-event to people)

It’s not even that. It is much simpler – lot of people do not like to be forced to cooperate with other people beyond very basic level. They come to this game not for challenges requiring an effort, but to kick back, disengage their minds and simply enjoy their time off work. They worked for 8 hours already, they do not want to repeat that in their free, rest time.

why the new pavillion does not work

in Festival of the Four Winds

Ilium.3160

I have tried to do the pavilion event multiple times. No server I have been in has been remotely organized and I have never even had the hint of receiving a gold reward. Now I won’t start complaining about the loot drops being terrible. But there has to be a better way to get tickets/tokens. I want to take part in the gauntlet but only have about 80 tickets, and my completely uninitiated self will not even know how to start fighting the bosses. Let alone have a chance to complete the achievements associated with the Living Story.

Why can’t those who want to participate actually get the chance to do so? Why have the tickets gated in such a way that you either have to have a bunch saved up or be incredibly lucky and land in a server that actually has a chance to complete the event quickly? As it is, it takes at least 30mins to do all the bosses for a chance at maybe 10 tickets. How is this having content open to anyone who wishes to play., and playing the way you want? This reeks of catering to elitists, which I thought this game was not supposed to be about.

I am very disappointed.

Are the beneficiaries supposed to just throw their hands up and say “I won’t make use of this awesome benefit because it’s not good for the country”?

In economics, every person acts for their own benefit. Not the “greater good”. Expecting otherwise is just setting yourself up for failure and it’s stupid.

See… this is why people equate “Farmers” as bad people. Because, what you just wrote is completely self centered and selfish. To put oneself before all else is frowned upon by many cultures and religions. How you are unaware of this, I have no idea. Also, there are MANY theories of economics which would not agree with your point of view too.

It’s pretty simple, if ten people were hungry and one person horded the food, you can be certain that one person would end up learning the value in sharing the hard way.

For me, I would not accept a “special” privilege if it would harm others. Heck, I can’t even get one of the farming circuits to slow down for 3 seconds for everyone to catch up to the pin. Even when we’re perfectly aware that we’ll all end up wait for the next target anyway. It’s just plain selfish behavior.

Most players enjoy acquiring things. New weapons, new armour etc. Acquisition is an element of MMOs. It’s incorrect to state that the people unhappy with the farming this month are people who don’t value item acquisition and don’t find it fun.

The problem arises when grind happy farmers are put into direct competition with everyone else. The vast majority of acquisition in this game is ruled by gold. Everyone is competing for the same thing. If there is a huge chunk of the player base that suddenly has access to hundreds of gold each because they are willing to subject themselves to grind, the players who don’t want to grind – who would rather explore the world, complete DEs (some of the most poorly rewarding content in the game despite the devs saying the whole game is end game – it’s not) or even run dungeons (despite the buff to gold rewards, it was trivial compared to champion loot bags and the MF buff of the Pavillion), these players are making similair money to before, but instead of competing with a handful of CoF farmers or Orr farmers pulling in average funds, suddenly a huge portion of the player base that chose to opt in to the grind are bidding for the same items.

The economy is PvP. Think of types of players as different classes. The champion zerg grind farmers are one class, the open world explorers are another class and the dungeon runners are another class. With the last patch, the PvP balance between the classes is incredibly imbalanaced to favour champion grinders. The abilities of the other players to compete with the grind happy farmers are significantly less now. As a result, people who might like to play different classes are now either forced to choose between losing or rerolling to the imbalanced class.

Ideally the game would reward all types of players equally or fairly for the kinds of content they like to play. This allows players to take part in the item acquisition part of the game without forcing them to choose between it and actually enjoying the other elements of the game. Unfortunately this last month the design has been heavily weighted towards zerg farming and repetitive grind (running the same dungeon paths over and over again hardly compares to the repetitiveness of Deadeye Dunwell or Subject 7) so much so that players are put into a position where they either participate in content they don’t like at a level they don’t want to take it to, or accept that they will be dramatically less effective in the new economy.

You guys might try to make the point that Farming isn’t fun and it ruins games, you need to consider that not all people really think or care the same way as you do!

Irrelevant. You can think the sky is yellow instead of thinking it’s blue, but it doesn’t change the fact that the sky is blue. We have interviews from Blizzard in the first days of WoW claiming how they were surprised that players would often flock to the grind-like and fast way to achieve something, instead of seeking the fun way… And we can clearly see how this realization has shaped MMORPGs for a very long time now. Farmers allow MMORPGs to be mediocre games. You can believe otherwise, but it wouldn’t become any less true.

Some you can get for less than a gold right now! Which anyone can afford, and its all thanks to those farmers you hate so much!

Wrong.

Imagine there were no farmers. Imagine everyone had the same amount of gold. We would have no absurdly priced item, simple because no one would be able to afford it. Wouldn’t make much of a difference if supply were a bit smaller, because trying to sell something for a small fortune would be more expensive than anyone in the game could buy.

In an Idealistic, Theocratic Utopia, that might be true, but guess what? This isn’t, and neither is Guildwars 2!

There is no reason it could not be, other than how it would kitten off the players who love, as the OP put it, “getting gold, gearing up, getting minipets, buying skins and armor to show off”. Who happen to be the same players who want everyone else to not get gold, not gear up, not get minipets, not buy skins or armor, so they can “show off”. Are you sure you want to prioritize those players over everyone else?

ORR Events are unsoloable

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sokar Rostau.7316

Sokar Rostau.7316

This wouldn’t be a problem if there were more lvl 80 areas in the world to explore.

You’re missing the point.

There’s one event in Malchor’s Leap, for example, where you are tasked with protecting three Pact engineers as they set up a camp. It is absolutely impossible to solo due to the enormous number of Risen that spawn together with Rotmouths and trebuchets to knock you back and stun you. This also happens to be the site of a WP (Colonnade Waypoint?), which results in it being a permanently contested unless a group comes through.

There’s a similar event near the entrance to Cursed Shore, still in Malchor’s Leap, where you have to protect the three Pact trebuchets from Risen and you are bombarded by six Risen trebuchets. This one is soloable, but it can take an hour or more to complete. Again, there’s a WP here, but unless you’re farming the area, most people simply don’t care about it being contested since the entrance to Cursed Shore is right there.

While both events have a similar premise, and number of enemies to deal with, the former is in a very, very, restricted space which ups the difficulty substantially. They are just two examples of many events in Orr that are not named “Group Events” but require a group to complete, at least in a reasonable time.

I think there needs to be a change in what events are called. Instead of “Events” and “Group Events”, there should be Events that can be soloed, Small Group Events that require a party-sized group to complete and Large Group Events which require a Squad-sized group.

Thief gets nerfed pretty much every patch. I’m really not sure that anybody gets nerfed as often as the thief. Engineers, maybe. Gutting mug’s damage for a heal that you almost always use when you’re already at full health doesn’t sound like much of a “reward”.

You are a crazy person.
