“I think the idea isn’t to protect you from finding yourself suddenly in a fight but to protect the fight from a zerg joining it,”

What is the mega server but insurance for the game that a zerg is exactly what is fighting? The game was created from the beginning for crowds of people to fight together. They create bosses that can wipe out large numbers of the “zerg,” then make it impossible to get back to the fight before the zerg has failed. This argument also doesn’t consider the huge number of d/c that we are more and more experiencing.

As far as fearing that a horde of players will descend before the boss dies… I have to laugh. That is obviously what ANet wants because if the zerg diminishes they send you to a new map. Too many times I have struggled to get a hit in before the huge number of people in my map bring a boss down and that is the norm. Sometimes, I never even see the boss because of the huge crowd and their skill affects.

Kampilan I love you. Yes, you get perfectly what I’m saying. I do appreciate the warning. And I do just want to get back to the fight. In the new areas it is much more difficult to get back in time.

I like freedom. It’s possible I guess that I have reached the point of diminished returns in a game that seems more and more to be run by authoritarians. To force me to run with a zerg and then make it impossible to finesse a d/c or a death is mean.

And it’s true… sometimes the “contested” waypoint is a lie and not really contested at all. My favorite is when every wp on the map is contested at the same time. At least give me the option of going to another map then because they have obviously stacked my map with too large a zerg.

Waypoints being closed because they are contested should be changed.

I am lying on a branch, destroyed by a bunch of mordrem because my bf was able to port before you closed Faren’s wp as contested. I was alone and confronted by a virtual army of mordrem.

Many times the closing of a wp has been disasterous for me, and at the very least inconvenient. It is particularly annoying not to be able to rejoin my party in a fight I was already aware of because the wp was contested. In the new areas this is especially annoying. There arent that many wps…. there are long distances between wps and the terrain is impossible to cover before the end of the fight.

We are mostly adults here, certainly old enough to figure out the game. What would be wrong with just giving us a little freedom to decide if we want to port into a contested wp or not. Warn us, yes. That is very nice. But let us decide whether to port into an area where there is a fight.

Mordrem Invasion Update: 11 September 12:30 PM

I think the problem with the invasion event is the same problem that has grown like a plant dragon for a long time. The longer GW2 goes on, the more your changes and events are to please you and not the players. It’s hard to imagine that you would actually enjoy playing the zerg type event you seem to enjoy creating and the fact is zerg farming was something GW2 promised not to force players to do.

The problem was magnified when you changed to the super server concept. The size of the zerg you encourage in a map is prohibitive to actually experiencing the event. There are too many people. It’s a nightmare to travel from one area to another and compete with a zillion people to get a hit in on some mobs so that you can actually get a reward. The mobs die too quickly because you force a zerg that takes them out before a fight can be relished.

Dying and having to travel to a waypoint is a nightmare. Even reaching the zerg is a nightmare by wp. If they are near the fight, the wp is contested. Duh. By the time you return to the fight… hello… it’s done.

I asked my friend, “do you really like this zerg thing?” He said, “Yes, I like it. I don’t like to see my character.”

Your rewards are weird. There may be one or two on the list that have obvious value, some that have mystery value and a lot, a lot, that are either too low level for any of my 20 level 80 characters or just not worth anything. What is the problem with actually being up-front and let people know what they are fighting for? I have seen it in other MMOs so there must be a reason for giving bad rewards. I wish you would remember that it costs you nothing to give a legendary rather than a nooby something. But it would make players more motivated if they saw they could ocasionally actually get something with in-game value every now and then.

I notice there are the mystery keys this time. I guess it’s a secret what they are for, but I suppose for the chest in Lions Arch. I sure hope that there will be stupendously good things in that mystery chest when it opens up.

I have been frustrated with much of the direction being taken by GW2 in the game. Some things have been good but a lot of things seem to be small-minded. I can’t overstate how much I appreciate that you have admitted the failures of this event to the players. I think it is a very good direction. I hope it continues. Thanks for that.

One thing I liked about GW 1 was its generosity to the players. I had the feeling that the developers were all excited about how good they were making the people feel. Maybe if the staff were to be a tad less focused on their own ego and more focused on the pleasures of making other people happy, GW2 could be generous too.

yes, lordkrall…. apart from the part that makes “free to play” possible. We never should have believed that buying a fifty dollar game would support it forever. Now…. now…. they tell us they are doing the changes for the new players. In other words, the ones who support the existence, through real money, are crap (never mind it does absolutely nothing for the new players either). They saw dollars and pounds and they were possessed by Mammon. I feel sorry for the player who actually farms for the gold that he trades for gems. As usual, the little man pays.

This is capitalism in its purist, most honest form. The man behind the curtain. Perhaps paying a monthly fee and everyone having an equal chance wouldn’t be such a bad idea. It would maybe even exorcise this evil that has possessed ANet.

Guild Alliances on Upcoming Patch

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I agree with all that Agent said at the beginning. Following is my own feeling.

It looks like ANet wants to expand upon the paradigm of wander into an event and all the strangers in the game who will remain strangers will come and help you. It’s all very communal and kumbaya. They want to make it possible for all the strangers in the world to lend a hand defeating the big wurms. These will be people who just wandered by and saw the message about the event and said, “oh, let’s do the wurms;” it will be people who are completely amazed and confused about what is happening when it happens; it will be people who are just there to make trouble for the group; it will be people who are leeching and find a convenient place to afk; in other words, it will be many players who are casual and/or random who deserve to do the wurms like everyone, but who don’t have the commitment, skill, desire to defeat the wurms. The wurms will be safe.

TxS has made an alliance to fight the big monsters. They wanted to do this because the big monsters were a challenge and the leaders of TxS are people who enjoy putting thought into their game, making strategy and tactics—organizing large numbers into a unit, fighting with a single purpose. They learned that doing this would require controlling the hunt as much as possible. That means that the number of people on the field who were not part of the organization would be limited as much as possible—by finding deserted servers and controlling the group with well-defined rules. By doing these things, TxS has been able to bring down the huge bosses.

Now it seems as though ANet wants to herd masses of players into servers using mathmatical probabilities, geographical borders and ties to guilds that become meaningless when every player can belong to five different guilds with different reasons for being, based on different servers in different countries. ANet’s thinking in this seems to be a real threat to TxS, and the organization of our hunts.

It’s ironic that ANet makes bosses that average, casual players can not defeat but then proceeds to threaten the ability of serious guilds, organized to solve the challenges of these bosses, to succeed. Of course casual players have every right to remain casual and random if they like. But, shouldn’t they also have the right to learn the kind of organization that can take place in the game that enables them to improve as players while defeating the big bosses? If the “serious” players leave to find another game where they can use their brains, the only alternative seems to nerf the bosses, dungeons, events to homogenize the game to its lowest possible denominator.

Please, ANet….. instances for guilds who wish to explore the game at a deeper level.

GW1 skill system vs GW2 skill system

Dedalus and Serephous thank you, especially Dedalus for the video links. I’m looking at the skills issue a bit different now. More is not necessarily better.

omg you actually changed my mind.

As soon as I saw the video of the elementalist and thought about my ele, I realized the skill system in GW2 gives plenty of freedom to manipulate the skills, through the traits and equipment builds but it also encourages players to coordinate the mobility of the character with the use of the skills. The playing field lends itself to a more focused approach. ok, duh… I had an epiphany… Like Dedalus said, words do not convey so much as the videos.

GW2 encourages players to excel.

Now I re-evaluate my GW1 skills experience. I was casual, but with a whole party of heroes, each having a build that suited their place in my home-grown party. That was totally a different time and game.

I suddenly realized I am much more involved and satisfied in GW2. GW2 wants me to use my brain. I really like the encouragement to think better than the “freedom” to choose a build from a zillion skills.

It feels so good to change my mind sometimes. Then I know I’m not a total … I would say it but the forum would replace it with “kitten”

This week, when ANet released more unrelated trivia in the upgrade to SAB, I got livid. I paid 80 bucks for a special addition of a game in 2013 and now they spend their work time re-creating a flat-dimension game from the 1990’s.

Setting aside your misconception of “their work”, you seem to be implying that they should only work on content you like. There are more people than yourself playing Guild Wars 2. And believe it or not, not all of them like the same sort of stuff. ArenaNet is well within their right to work on aspects of the game that others enjoy, even if you do not.

I bought a product with years of advertising provided on a website, which purchase I based upon that advertising. In my opinion the product is no longer what they advertised in their lengthy presentation of what it would be. That, and the fact that my purchasing gems from their store supports the work they do, is the justification I claim for an opinion of the matter of their work ethic. When the work they do is not sufficient in my opinion, the best thing for me to do is stop supporting it. For that reason it is only fair I give them my opinion which they can use or throw away as they wish. (In other words, I was talking more to the developers of this game than to you or any other reader or writer of this forum, except to the person who began the thread who I wished to support.)

If I, and others who share my opinion, do not express our opinions, the developers might think we haven’t noticed they are re-vamping somebody else’s work instead of doing their own.

My opinion is not alone, as you can see in this thread… not only are their many who love to reminisce, there are many who would like to have the game they thought they were purchasing and would like to look ahead instead of back. It is my hope that enough people will express their opinions. Perhaps my opinion is in the majority and the developers will not be able to ignore it. To others who may fear being attacked in forum I ask you please to express it anyway. Let’s make a majority.

My best expression will be to stop buying gems, which I have done. And begin playing other games, which I am also doing. I will take what I like from the game, until I no longer like anything about it. Until then I will totally leave the support of “their work” to other employers.

And I will speak my mind whether you like it or not.

Well you lost me

DYSEQTA, I totally agree with everything you said. I also think you are right to expect criticism. Boat-rockers in this forum usually get a ration of hate.

I don’t resent Mario Brothers, what I resent is the work time spent on Mario Brothers while the polymock arena has sat un-finished from the beginning and the the map is incomplete. While there are so many issues in the current GW2 game that need work, the developers of the game I purchased are showing signs they lack the creativity to create their own material. Working on the mechanics of a 1990 game looks like an exercise in self-gratification for a developer who can’t imagine the future.

The website in the lead-up to release of GW2 gave clues. Two of them: GW2, as described in the philosophy and shown in the fantastic screenshots and videos, was going to blow other games out of the water and 2) The developers of the game were so wrapped up in the pleasure they were having, creating GW2, they almost forgot to publish it. I should have known that self-gratification would win when the new wore off of GW2. It didn’t occur to me they would start playing, and creating updates for, a game they played when they were children.

Me, I have been reduced to completing the dailies and then rushing off to Aion, TERA, GW1 and even the worst game in the world, Lineage II. GW2 is beautiful and I love the mobility of it, even if I’m not a good jumper. But, so much of the game needs work to become the game they promised. I thought GW2 would be a 2013 game, looking to being an innovator into the future, not reminiscing about the past.

I am too embarrassed to admit how much money I have spent buying gems…. but I can say its more than my previous monthly fee I paid to play Lineage II in the day. I have been a loyal player, spending more time playing GW2 than is healthy. But it’s all changing.

I don’t complain to gratify my opinion…. from me it’s more a cry for help from the developers to do justice to the game. They really need to review the pre-game website leadup. Maybe their motivation would be more focused. If we don’t publish our opinions they might think we like it, accept it, or don’t care. I care a lot.

GW1 skill system vs GW2 skill system

I was a casual in GW1 and I prefer the system there. What it gave was choice and freedom. There were the player-egos who made it a hobby to critique players who didn’t know the latest build but, being a casual player, I sometimes made one I liked or a guild mate turned me on to something good… it was not a burden at all to have many options. It was freedom. I think that is what is missing in GW2 in the game overall… freedom. GW2 seems to be a repressive regime at times… there is super control over all aspects, especially skills and very especially the economy. Even the way the game is played feels restrictive—if you don’t play it their way, you don’t progress. I like the traits too, but maybe we like the traits because they are the only freedom we have when it comes to skills.

Casual = It’s all about the journey.
Hardcore = It’s all about the destination.

Pretty much nailed it (in my opinion).

Casual doesn’t mean you don’t have a lot of time to play. It just means you like to relax while you play and enjoy the scenery. You’re not in a rush to get the best gear or hit max level, you move at your own pace and play whenever you feel like it. You’re a relaxed player and just enjoy the journey.

But that also doesn’t mean they don’t like the hardcore content. They will get to it in time, but at their own pace. And if an opportunity arises to join in on some, they won’t turn it down. But it’s not something they rush to do at a moment’s notice.

They take their time, relax, and just enjoy the moment.

Thank you, I’m smiling cause now I don’t feel so all alone.

I remember my “hardcore” friend rushing through the game first week, getting that title “Been there, done that.” A bigger mis-statement there never was.

So now the hardcore are crying there isn’t enough “end content.” Oh well.

“Living Story” would be to finish the story that was begun. Fill out the empty-but-named places on the map. Give us Polymock instead of a spot on the map and an asura gate to nowhere. It seems like the new content people haven’t actually looked at the game, or they arent interested that the direction of the “new content” was pretty much planned and in place, as shown on the map.

It’s appropriate to compare this MMO to other games. I played Lineage II for 7 years and watched what happened as they added stuff, after stuff, after stuff until it was unrecognizable and our inventories were full of useless game pieces. In the end, the game was a total nightmare because they were making it on the fly and without solid direction.

In this case, the direction was clearly planned. It’s on the map. New content people at ANet: please look at the map before proceeding further.

Braham and Rox - I like one of them...

I like them both, dont like Rox’s eyes either…dont understand why somebody went so far as to give her anime eyes, but… I am just relieved that the story finally started. It took too long to unfold, even if the first installments were appropriate.

Somewhere I read that one of the main NPC eventually dies. I really dont want that to happen to either.

I think Rox is my favorite because she really likes animals and she is loyal to her warband. That makes her deep enough for me.

I like Braham too, and Im happy with him being serious instead of brassy. The races need a lot of filling out in my opinion and this helps. I’m very tired of seeing Norn as Viking bikers. I happen to have a norn character who is very serious and one that is like a big puppy. They are still norn. Sometimes it seems Norn totem animals have had more personality than they do. Charr also need some filling out… maybe Rox can help. (Can’t they just gradually change Rox’s eyes?) And don’t kill off one of them. I’ve had enough pain, losing Tybalt. T.T

The thing is this: I dont like jumping and I really dont care for the Super Mario thing… What I would like is events that are for everyone… not just for people who like these things. April Fools, Christmas, Halloween… people who play the game but dont care for jumping puzzles should be included in the holiday festivities in a meaningful way and not be made to work at something they really dont like in order, not just to get the rewards, but to actually participate with other people in the game society.

This issue really highlights a major rift I think… there is so much talk about the coins and how you can get baubles. When my friend, an avid gamer and lover of this event, took me into the cube to show me the ropes he rushed through it and went straight for the baubles. He was farming for the skins. I, on the other hand, did what I do in the game. I wanted to experience it.. I wasn’t in a hurry to get to the big boss. I wanted to see the scenery and smell those little square flowers. Same with jumps in the big world. I go with guildies and they are in a big rush to get to the end. The way I have played the game is to take the time to take in the view. Maybe this is one reason Im not a great dodger… I think too much.

I accept that I need to learn better jumping and dodging to enjoy the game the way I do at the end…because I wont get there if I dont learn it. But to be left behind in events that should be for everyone is too much like the real world. What are we doing here is escaping that … so, why cant they do what they said and make it for everyone? They made infantile.. that’s good (for me) but why not leave the chests in the world? That helps some of us feel included

Neither the chests nor the continue coin should come back. I rather let Tyria be Tyria rather than infected with 8-bit creatures everywhere, simply because people can’t jump.

That said, you can ALWAYS enter SAB, and get 5 lives. and play as far as you can get. You will retain tools like bombs and such as well, and it saves which worlds you have unlocked. There literally are loads of ways to still go inside SAB and get baubles.

Plus the skins are in my opinion there as to show that you in fact are able to do the jumping. Same way with dungeons. If you do one dungeon alot you get that armor/weapons. Fractals has it’s own loot, storyline has it’s own loot.

In other words, GW2 is not for everyone… so suck it up and forget playing the game the way you want to… because we have two classes of players here, the ones on the inside and the losers. I thought everybody was going to be able to play the game “the way you want to.” Hah… and I thought that the idea was to keep players from being competitive with each other, but instead cooperative… like peace and love forever. Hah. Instead we have like this, someone who is saying if you really dont want to spend you game time learning to jump then tough (Here I said a word that the gestapo apparently didnt like and changed to “kitten” – the preview wont let me change it to a slang expression for a woman’s breast). Rewards are for the “in” crowd. Why not put us in a ghetto village where we are forced to stay until we learn to jump? Or give the rest of us april fool events and christmas events and halloween events that we can actually enjoy.

Please bring back the chests… I dont see any rationalization for taking them out really, unless you are trying to control us into playing the little nintendo game. Im not a good jumper, not so good on dodging either… but I can see a reason to learn those skills so the nintendo thing is like work, or school, to me.. and I just go in there, like Im at a gym… I work out then I leave. I paid for GW2, not Mario Brothers. GW2 is what I want. I wish you had finished the polymock arena, made THAT a good fun game in the game… or spend your time correcting the problems that exist in GW2 before moving onto Nintendo within the game. During Halloween the gates stayed up and going throughout the event. Please give us the chests back so I can play GW2 and still benefit from Mario Brothers.

Hocofaisan said he plays one hour a day.

I have four level 80s in exotic. I dont think I would have them if I could only invest an hour a day. And, now, with the dailies… who would have time to build a character?

I share Hocofaisan’s frustration about dailies because I personally like freedom. Every day when I log into GW2 now I get angry because I feel as though I am being manipulated. After doing the dailies I am too angry about playing the developers game instead of my own game, the way I would choose it, that I leave and play TERA. That is also where I spend my real money now.

Thank you SneakyErvin for answering my question, to myself, of why I even play GW2 anymore at all…. Yes, I have hopes the future will bring me back.

People like hocofaisan, casual players, are very important to the success of the game, given its structure. As a new player and as a player of alts, I have often depended on the kindness of strangers to get me through a boss or event. Without them the game becomes a closed system and only alts will play the low areas. Maybe the guilds will keep us going in that case, instead of new and casual players… I hope we have lots of real coin to keep the shop open.

Why is the tone and style of GW2 so "goofy"

I agree in a way. The humor in GW1 was intelligent. It’s like somebody else is writing it now. I liked Tybalt but it would have been better if he were more like Pyre in GW1… the charr, like the asuras, are trivialized and made a butt of stupid jokes about eating meat. At least the charr seem to be a race that can’t be visually trivialized in the cutscenes, where my human characters seem to be absent, looking around in space while they plan to save the world. It’s hard to believe my human archer is the commander of the federation when she is always playing with her hair. I get the feeling the developers of this kind of stuff are on the superficial side. In GW1 the humor itself was serious, as good humor really is. When I began returning to Lineage II, the worst game in the world, I knew the fuzzy feeling for GW2 had worn off. Now I find myself playing TERA more and more.
